2 Season Review Pirate Team Notes The Pirates finished the season 5-2 at home in conference play and won a school-best six C-USA games, finishing with its highest-seeding (No. 8) since joining C-USA. ECU is 7 wins shy of reaching the reaching 500 victories in the programs history. The Pirates equaled or out rebounded 17 of their 28 opponents on the season (1,079-1,013) by an average margin of 2.3. In four consecutive games Feb (USF, UAB, Cincinnati and Louisville), the Pirates shot 50 percent or better in a single half from the floor. Against Cincinnati, the Pirates shot a scorching 56.5 percent (13-23), the highest first half output for the season. In seven of its last nine games, ECU shot 40 percent or better from the floor for the entire game. Since joining C-USA in 2001, ECU is 1-6 all-time in overtime conference games. They recorded their first overtime victory (71-65) against Louisiville on Feb. 13, ECU held Cincinnati to 21.4 percent (12-56) shooting from the floor, the lowest shooting output by a Pirate opponent last season. The Pirates allowed just 31 points against Cincinnati, the lowest point total by a Pirate opponent last season and the lowest since 30 points scored Columbia on Dec. 3, 1994 inside Minges Coliseum. ECU held the Bearcats scorless from the field in the final 12:06 of the game, marking the longest drought by a Pirate opponent last season. ECU s 27 point margin victory over Cincinnati, 58-31, was the biggest victory of the season for Pirates. Seven of the Pirates 10 wins were by 13 or more points and three of those were by more than 23 points. As a team, the Pirates shot 70.6 percent ( ) from the free throw line. They shot 80 percent or better 10 times last season. The Pirates were on the season when starting Cooper, Horton, Jackson, Pankey and Sutton. Jennifer Jackson Pirate Individual Notes Jennifer Jackson recorded her 71st career double figure game netting a game-best 24 points against Charlotte (Feb. 26). In an overtime win against Louisville (Feb. 13), Jackson recorded her third 30-plus point game of the season and fifth of her career with 31 points. She also recorded her fifth double-double of the season and 17th of her career with 11 rebounds. Jackson moved into fifth place all-time on ECU s scoring list with 12 points against Charlotte (Jan. 23, 2005). On Feb. 5 against USF, she recorded a game-high 22 points and 14 rebounds. Against VCU, she recorded a game-high 30 points, her fourth 30- plus point outing of her career. She posted a career-high 34 points against Stephen F. Austin (Dec. 4). Jackson tied a career-high by hitting five 3- pointers against both Duquesne and Louisville. Currently Jackson ranks in the top-11 all-time in six Pirate statistical categories. Senior Shanita Sutton proved to be an inside threat for the Pirates in season. She netted 19 points while collecting three rebounds and two blocks against Louisville. In a win over Cincinnati, Sutton scored 18 points going a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor and 6-of-6 from the free throw line on her way to recording her 15th double-digit game of the season. Sutton scored a team-best 16 points against UAB (Feb. 7). She collected a career-high 20 points, hitting 8-of- 17 shots from the floor against VCU. Against Charlotte, (Jan. 23) she posted her second double-double of the season and her career with 15 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. She finished the season ranked second on the team in scoring (11.7 points) and rebounds (6.1) per game. She has posted double-figures in 18 of 28 games dating back to the Cal State Fullerton (Nov. 27), when she netted a team-best 14 points. Sutton also led the team in blocks (23) and moved into seventh place (64) on ECU s all-time list with her lone block against Houston (Feb. 18). She recorded at least one block in five consecutive games (Feb. 7-20). Sutton set a career-high in steals (5) against TCU. Viola Cooper moved into seventh place on ECU s all-time three-point field goals made list after hitting three from behind the arc against West Virginia (Dec. 20). She hit 84 for her career. Cooper started all 56 consecutive games played since coming to ECU in She posted 26 career double-digit games with her most recent coming against Memphis (March 3, 2005) with 17 points. Junior forward LaToya Horton posted a career-high in assists (7) and collected a gamehigh 10 rebounds against Charlotte (Feb. 26) in the regular season finale. Against N.C. A&T, she recorded a career-high 11 points and also had East Carolina Women s Basketball

3 two blocks. Against UAB, Horton grabbed a season-best 14 rebounds, 12 coming on the defensive end and collected eight points. She finished the season ranked 10th (overall) and tied for 8th (C-USA) in blocks. Horton recorded at least one block in 15 of her last 23 games. Against Saint Louis, (Jan. 9) she tied her career-high with three blocks. Last season ( ), she recorded at least one blocked shot in eight consecutive games (Nov Jan. 1, 2004) which set a school record. Sophomore transfer Amanda Mills (University of Rhode Island), saw her first action as a Pirate against in-state rival UNC Wilmington (Dec. 18). In 21 minutes of play, she collected eight points, four rebounds and two blocked shots. Against N.C. A&T she recorded seven points, hitting 5-of-6 from the charity stripe and against C-USA foe Saint Louis she netted a career-high nine points. Mills collected five points and one block on 2-of-2 shooting from the floor and going 1-for-1 from the free throw line against UAB (Feb. 7). Senior Soraya Hellaby recorded career-highs in points (12), field goals made (6) and tied a career-high in minutes played (19) against Montana at the Four Points LAX Turkey Shootout. She recorded her first career start for ECU against George Washington (Nov. 21). Freshman Nicole Days came off the bench and proved to be an inside force for head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener. She averaged 2.5 points and 2.9 rebounds a game. She ranked first among C-USA freshman in field goal percentage (.553). Against N.C. A&T, she recorded her first doubledigit rebounding game with a career-best 13 rebounds and against Cal State Fullerton, she recorded her first double-digit scoring game with a career-high 10 points. Days netted eight points and grabbed six boards in 15 minutes of play against DePaul (Jan. 14). Senior Samantha Pankey (Dilwyn, Va.) was named to the first-team 2005 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Women's Basketball District III University Division Team, announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America Feb. 18. Pankey, who ranked first in her class and was a double major in English and communications, is a four-time Conference USA Commissioner Honor Roll and Academic Medal recipient, two-time PCS Phosphate All-Academic Team selection and an ECU Athletic Director's Chancellor's List recipient every semester since the fall of 2001, while compiling an overall GPA of 4.0, and graduated first in her class for the entire university. Pankey played in 102 career games with 65 starts, while averaging 3.3 points, 1.9 assists a game, and has a career free throw percentage of.801 ( ). Samantha Pankey Pirates Record When... The Pirates (1-0) had two players in double figures led by senior Jennifer Jackson s game-high 23 points and a team-best eight boards. Fellow senior Viola Cooper netted 11 points, while hitting two three-pointers, including one with 13 seconds left in the first half. For the first eight minutes in the second half, both teams traded baskets as the largest lead was four points by the Pirates at the intermission. Backto-back lay-ups by Jackson and Tamekia Powell gave the Pirates a five-point lead with 9:37 remaining. Jackson answered Duquesne s three-pointer by Maria Stankevich when she connected on her fourth three of the night to spark the Pirates. Cooper then drained her second three and Samantha Pankey hit a seven foot jumper to put ECU up by eight, From that moment on, ECU cruised to a victory outscoring the Dukes I thought our team played hard defensively tonight, said head coach Sharon Baldwin-Tener. A trio of seniors scored in double-figures to give the Pirates their fifth win in conference play equaling the total number of wins from a year ago. Jennifer Jackson lead all scorers with 19 points as she connected on 6-of- 14 shots from the floor and drained 6-of-7 from the charity stripe. Shanita Sutton was perfect from the floor hitting all six of her shots and free throws for her 15th double-digit game of the season with 18 points. Sutton also grabbed a team-best six rebounds and had three blocks. Viola Cooper added 10 points and four rebounds, while dishing out four assists. The Pirates jumped out to a 16-4 lead in the first nine and half minutes of play on six Jackson points and never looked back as they took a 15-point lead into the half, Opening up the second half, ECU extended its lead to 21 (40-19) after Sutton sank two free throws with 15:56 remaining. The Pirates then put on a defensive display as they held the Bearcats (7-16, 2-8) to 14 second half points on 16 percent (5-31) shooting, and did not surrender a single basket in the final 12:06 of the game. Cincinnati s lone point during that period came on a free throw by Ashley Brown. Anne Stephens led the Bearcats with 13 points, while Karen Twehues grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. Viola Cooper started her 51st consecutive game for the Pirates while scoring 10 points. It was her 24th career double-figure game. She also finished with four rebounds and four assists. ECU held Cincinnati to 21.4 percent (12-56) shooting on the night, the lowest shooting output by a Pirate opponent this season. Senior guard Jennifer Jackson connected on her fifth 3-pointer of the day as time expired to send the Pirates (10-14, 6-5) into overtime, In the extra period, it was all ECU as it connected on 12-of-14 free throws to outscore the Cardinals (17-7, 8-3) 14-8 for their tenth win of the season. Jackson once again led three Pirates in scoring with a game-high 31 points on 8-of-21 shooting from the floor, which included 5-of-10 from behind the arc. She also connected on 10 of her 12 free throw attempts and snagged a team-best 11 rebounds, for her fifth double-double of the season. Fellow seniors Shanita Sutton (19) and Samantha Pankey (14) were also in double figures, with Pankey hitting a career-best 10 free throws. Trailing by 10 (8-18) with 7:05 remaining in the first half, Pankey sparked a 15-8 run by the Pirates to close out the half when she went to the charity stripe hitting all three free throw attempts. Jackson sank a pair of three-point baskets in the final 3:40, including one with 26.1 tics left on the clock pulling within three at the half, East Carolina started the second half with a 6-0 run to go up with just under two minutes into the half. After a timeout the Cardinals tied the game up at 29 with two free throws from Yuliya Tokova. The score was tied once more at 31 before Louisville went on a 12-4 run go up with 9:52 left to play. Viola Cooper hit a three-pointer and Jackson hit one of two from the line to cut the lead to with just under seven minutes left in regulation. Jackson connected on her fourth three-pointer of the day with just under five minutes to play to draw within two, In the final 2:26 in regulation, the lone basket made by either team was Jackson s three-pointer from the left side of the court to take the game into overtime. Tokova led two Cardinals with double-doubles as she recorded a careerhigh 19 points and collected 10 rebounds, while sophomore Jazz Covington scored 15 points with 12 boards. Katie Olson added 11 in the loss. Viola Cooper started her 52nd consecutive game for the Pirates. Her lone basket of the game was a 3-pointer, the 76th of her career. On the day, she had six rebounds, four assists and one steal. Jennifer Jackson played in her 105th career game for the Pirates with her 72nd career start.
