The Runnin Rebels wrapped up play in the Global Sports Classic on Saturday with a win, earning third place in the event. On Friday, UNLV lost to TCU, 63-59, ending its three-game win streak. In the victory over the Hilltoppers, UNLV made 13 3-pointers and were led by senior forward Tyrell Green s career-high 23 points, while sophomore guard Jalen Poyser had career highs of 22 points and nine assists (with just one turnover). The two combined to go 11 of 17 on 3-pointers and tallied 45 total points. For the season, Poyser leads UNLV in scoring with an average of 18.2 points per game, while Green is at 12.0 ppg. The Thunderbirds are 2-0 at home this season and are coming off a win over Life Pacific on Saturday. Junior guard Randy Onwuasor leads the team in scoring with a 20.3 ppg average, while senior guard Race Parsons (12.5 ppg) and junior guard James McGee (12.3 ppg) are also averaging in double figures. SUU s head coach Todd Simon was an assistant, associate head coach, then the interim head coach for the Runnin Rebels through the end of the season. He spent the last nine years as head coach at New Mexico State where he compiled a (.641) record. His current career record is (.641). He earned win No. 200 on Nov. 19 against Cal State Fullerton. Coming to UNLV is actually a return to Las Vegas for Coach Menzies. He spent a year with the Runnin Rebels on Lon Kruger s staff in as an assistant coach. The Runnin Rebels dropped their season opener on Nov. 11 at home to South Alabama, 76-68, then won three straight: over UC Riverside on Nov. 16, against Cal State Fullerton on Nov. 19 and against Northern Arizona on Nov. 22. UNLV then lost to TCU (63-59) on Friday and beat Western Kentucky (71-61) on Saturday. The Runnin Rebels have played all six of their games so far at home. Sophomore guard Jalen Poyser leads the Runnin Rebels in scoring at 18.2 ppg, while senior forward Tyrell Green is also in double figures with 12.0 ppg. Senior forward Christian Jones, who is out with an injury, averaged 14.0 ppg and a team-leading 7.0 rpg over his three games played. Patrick McCaw was picked No. 38 overall by the Golden State Warriors, while Stephen Zimmerman Jr. was selected No. 41 by the Orlando Magic. the southern utah thunderbirds (2-4, 0-0 big sky) Southern Utah is coming off a home win over Life Pacific on Saturday. The Thunderbirds have won both of their home games this season. The other was a victory over Bethesda. SUU opened the season with two road losses: at Valparaiso (79-65) and at Saint Louis (88-76). It also suffered losses in Las Vegas against Coastal Carolina (83-68) and Ball State (94-83). Three Thunderbird players are averaging double figures in scoring, led by Junior guard Randy Onwuasor (20.3 ppg). Senior guard Race Parsons (12.5 ppg) and junior guard James McGee (12.3 ppg) are the others. In the win over the Warriors on Saturday, freshman forward Jacob Calloway led the way with 18 points. Junior forward/center Christian Musoko added 17 as Onwuasor, freshman guard Decardo Day and freshman forward Ivan Madunic each scored 13. Calloway had a double-double, adding 12 rebounds. Southern Utah finished last season 5-24 overall and 3-15 in the Big Sky, finishing 11th. This year s team was picked to finish 12th in the Big Sky. The Runnin Rebels finished third after falling to TCU, but defeating Western Kentucky. Runnin Rebel sophomore guard Jalen Poyser made the all-tournament team after averaging 18.0 ppg over the four UNLV games vs. Cal State Fullerton, Northern Arizona, TCU and Western Kentucky. He was an assistant coach on Lon Kruger s staff at UNLV in and is 4-2 at the helm of the Runnin Rebels. Anthony Bennett was selected No. 1 overall in the 2013 NBA Draft, becoming the second UNLV player to be the top selection (Larry Johnson in 1991 was the other). UNLV is only the 18th school to ever have multiple No. 1 overall draft choices and is just the fourth to have two No. 1 NBA Draft picks in the last 25 years. Only one school has ever had three No. 1 draft picks. The program had back-to-back lottery selections in 1998 and 1999 with Keon Clark (13th overall by the Orlando Magic ) and Shawn Marion (ninth overall by the Phoenix Suns ). With Rashad Vaughn picked No. 17 overall in the 2015 NBA Draft, UNLV has had two first-round selections over the last four years. A total of 15 Runnin Rebels have been selected in the NBA s first round since 1975, and of those, nine have been lottery selections. Sports Director Kevin Bolinger joins UNLV head coach Marvin Menzies in the studio Sundays during the season for a unique half-hour of game reviews, previews and program features. The Reb Zone Sports Show airs Sundays nights at 11 p.m. exclusively on FOX5 following FOX5 News at 10 p.m. Weekend Edition and FOX5 SportsPlus. The show is also available on an archived basis on UNLV Athletics YouTube channel, which may be found at UNLVRebels.com/videos. The Reb Zone has received the Electronic Media Award for Best Sports Show. Runnin Rebels Retired Eddie Owens Jersey On nov. 16 Eddie Owens, the former Runnin Rebel All-American and the all-time leading scorer in program history, had his UNLV jersey retired (not his number) during a special ceremony at halftime of UNLV s game on Nov. 16 vs. UC Riverside. Owens, who starred at UNLV from under Hall of Fame coach Jerry Tarkanian, was part of the Hardway Eight, the Runnin Rebels that put the program on the national map and advanced to the school s first NCAA Final Four. Owens scored 2,221 points during his UNLV career, 148 more points than any other Runnin Rebel in history -- and did so before the introduction of the 3-pointer. He also holds the UNLV record for most field goals made in a career with 913. In addition, Owens ranks in the top 10 in program history in most career free throws made (395), points scored in a season (twice), career scoring average (18.8 ppg) and seasonal scoring average (23.4 ppg in ). He paced the team in scoring for three consecutive campaigns (one of only two Runnin Rebels to do so in the last 40 years). He was the emerging program s second All-American when he was tabbed First Team by a pair of outlets as a junior in The native of Houston, Texas, scored 39 points in a game in 1976, which is among the top-20 performances in UNLV history. Through their talent, success and style of play, Eddie Owens and the Hardway Eight established Runnin Rebel Basketball as a national power, said UNLV Director of Athletics Tina Kunzer-Murphy. The success our program enjoyed during subsequent decades was built upon what Eddie and his teammates achieved. To be the all-time leading scorer in the history of our program is an incredible accomplishment. Eddie means so much to the tradition of Runnin Rebel Basketball, and we are proud to honor and pay tribute to him in this way.

5 The team gained fame during his senior season by setting NCAA records for most points in a season (3,246), most 100-point games (23) and most consecutive 100- point games (12). In his final collegiate game, Owens scored 34 points to lead UNLV to a victory over UNC Charlotte in the now-defunct consolation game of the NCAA Tournament to make the Runnin Rebels a stunning during his four years on the court. Selected in the second round of the 1977 NBA Draft by the Kansas City Kings (31st overall), he played one season in the league for Buffalo. Owens wore number 11 at UNLV and his uniform is the ninth to hang in the rafters at the Thomas & Mack Center. UNLV retired the jersey of Eddie Owens, the all-time leading scorer in program history, at halftime. Jalen Poyser led UNLV with a game-high 19 points, making 4 of 7 3-pointers. Dwayne Morgan added 13 points with seven rebounds and three blocks, while Tyrell Green scored 10. UNLV turned the ball over 19 times. Desmond Bane led the Horned Frogs with 15 points and Vladimir Brodziansky had 14. Point guard Jaylen Fisher, who had previously committed to attending UNLV, didn t start because of an illness and scored seven points. TCU s bench outscored UNLV s UNLV got off to a fast start, opening the game on an 11-2 run and pushing the lead to TCU steadily climbed back into the game and secured a lead at the half. The Runnin Rebels limited TCU to 36.2-percent shooting. Jalen Poyser s fourth 3-pointer of the night brought the Runnin Rebels within with 3:51 to play, but UNLV missed its next five shots from the field, allowing TCU to widen its lead from the free-throw line. NOTES: UNLV made 13 of 29 3-pointers, with Tyrell Green delivering a clutch one late. Green s shot with 1:20 left beat the shot clock and put the Runnin Rebels ahead He led the Runnin Rebels with a career-high and game-high 23 points, while Jalen Poyser also had career highs of 22 points and nine assists (with just one turnover). Green and Poyser combined shot 11 of 17 on 3-pointers and tallied 45 total points. UNLV was again without Christian Jones and Cheickna Dembele because of injuries. UNLV shot 52 percent in the second half, including 53.8 percent from 3-point range. UNLV committed just 11 turnovers for the game and outscored the Hilltoppers 14-7 on points off turnovers. Que Thomas led the Hilltoppers with 16 points. UNLV scored the game s first 10 points. More than half of the Runnin Rebels shot attempts came from behind the line as they were 24 of 57 from the field. Western Kentucky led at the half. Dwayne Morgan scored eight points and had six rebounds in 21 minutes. He picked up his fourth foul with 18:55 remaining in the second half and had to sit, but he re-entered with 9:20 left on the clock and managed to chip in six points, two rebounds and a steal the rest of the way.
