2 A Win Over West Chester The Villanova Wildcats led from start to finsh Saturday in posting an win over the West Chester Golden Rams in a game played at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. What I liked most was that (West Chester) was 3-of-12 from three, stated Villanova head coach Jay Wright. When you play a team like this that is smaller than we are and have quickness, they can break you down and kick it out for open threes. I thought we did a good job handling that. I thought we did a good job sharing the basketball. We had 22 assists. It was good to see JayVaughn (Pinkston) get it going offensively too. For much of the day, the Wildcats relied on a seven man playing rotation (both Henry e and Patrick Farrell did see action in the game s final minutes). Sophomore guard Ryan Arcidiacono was in uniform but did not see action after suffering bruised ribs in a practice earlier in the week. Freshman Kris Jenkins sprained his right ankle with just over five minutes left in the first period and did not return. Dylan Ennis remains out after breaking a bone in his right hand last month and a sprained left ankle kept senior guard Nick McMahon out as well. Villanova jumped out to a quick 13-0 lead over the game s first four minutes. Tony Chennault connected with James Bell for an alley-oop dunk to open the scoring and that was followed by three consecutive made 3-point goals, including a pair by junior JayVaughn Pinkston and another from junior Darrun Hilliard. A Bell drive and score pushed the advantage to 13 points. The early success by Villanova was fueled by defense. The Wildcats limited the Golden Rams to 1-of-11 shooting from the field over the first eight minutes of the contest and built a 20-8 advantage. By halftime, the Wildcats had extended the lead to Pinkston set the scoring pace with 15 points for VU while Hilliard had 11. Mitchell s 10 first half points paced the Golden Rams. The Wildcats were just as tenacious defensively in the second half as they were prior to intermission. The lead expanded to with under a minute left in the contest. The final count was Villanova JayVaughn s Jump Redshirt sophomore JayVaughn Pinkston (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was named pre-season second team All-BIG EAST in voting by the league s coaches. The former Bishop Loughlin School standout closed on a streak of 12 consecutive double-digit scoring efforts, culminating in a 20-point, eight rebound effort in the Cats NCAA Tournament loss to North Carolina. Pinkston picked up where he left off against West Chester. The redshirt junior set the scoring pace with 27 points on 8- of-12 shooting from the field. He added six rebounds and three blocked shots in 30 minutes of activity. One of Pinkston s scoring tools is his ability to get to the free throw line. In 34 games last year, Pinkston attempted 241 free throws and converted 171 (.710). He averaged 7.1 attempts from the line per game. Against West Chester he was 8-of- 11 from the charity stripe. Another plus for Pinkston came from beyond the 3-point arc, where he was 3- of-4. Last season, the Brooklyn native was 10-of-37 (.270) from deep after going 15-of-41 (.366) from distance in Villanova Roster No. Name Pos. Ht./Wt. 3 That 70 s Show If you are looking for a quick indicator on Villanova, keep an eye on the 70 point plateau. Over the course of the past few seasons, it has often provided extra insight into the Wildcats. When Villanova scored 70 or more points in a game in , it was 12-2 (.857). When it failed to reach that number, VU was 8-12 (.400). Over the last two seasons, the Cats are (.705) when scoring 70 or more points in a contest. Arch s Arc Freshman guard Ryan Arcidiacono - like Pinkston, a preseason second team All BIG EAST selection - dressed but did not see action in the exhibition victory over West Chester due to bruised ribs. We felt like it was best to hold Ryan out, stated Villanova head coach Jay Wright. The feeling was that we would give him a better shot at being close to 100 percent Friday night if we didn t use him. The product of Langhorne, Pa., was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week four times in He exploded for 32 points in his BIG EAST debut against St. John s on Jan. 2 and was a unanimous pick for the BIG EAST All-Rookie unit at season s end. Arcidiacono was also named to the pre-season Bob Cousy Award Watch List. For Whom the Bell Tolls One of the less heralded Wildcats is among the most critical. Senior James Bell tends to be overshadowed in many ways but his knack for draining clutch shots in was vital to Villanova returning to the NCAA Tournament for the eighth time in the last nine seasons.. One hint of Bell s value is this: Villanova was 11-2 (.846) last season when Bell scores in double figures. The Orlando, Fla., native contributed 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor in the exhibition win. He also added three assists, one blocked shot and a steal in 23 minutes. Tracking Triples It was an area that head coach Jay Wright described as his squad s achilles heel last season. Opponents converted.370 of their 3-point field goal attempts against the Wildcats in There were 10 occastions last season when the Wildcats allowed an opponent to drop in 10 or more 3-point goals. Villanova won only three of those games and none after Jan. 2. So Wright was encouraged by the fact that VU limited West Chester to 3-of-12 (.250) from beyond the arc in the exhibition victory last weekend. I thought we were better, stated Wright. We still have a long ways to go. Darrun s Development Among those whose strides helped the Wildcats improve from 13 wins in to 20 in was junior guard and Lehigh Valley native Darrun Hilliard. As a freshman, Hilliard offered early flashes of brilliance before seeing his minutes dwindle as the physical toll of the BIG Series Stuff vs. Lafayette Friday, November 8, 2013 The Pavilion/8:00 p.m. Fox Sports 2/CBS Sports Radio 610 All-time: VU leads 6-1 Last Meeting: Villanova 86, Lafayette 41 (Nov. 20, 2010) Last Lafayette Victory: Forfeit (Dec. 14, 1922) Jay Wright vs. Lafayette: 2-0 Notes: The these two programs opened the season at the Pavilion with the Wildcats claiming a triumph... As a sophomore, he made a large step forward, starting all 34 games and was third on the team in scoring at 11.4 ppg. Hilliard was a model of offensive efficiency last Saturday against West Chester. He connected on all six of his attempts from beyond the 3-point arc and sank all eight of his free throw tries. He ended the afternoon with 26 points, five assists, five steals, and four rebounds.

4 New Faces on the Scene Two products of the metropolitan Washington, D.C., region and a local athlete originally from Philadelphia highlight the Wildcats newcomers for Josh Hart averaged 20.6 points, 11.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game as a junior at Sidwell Friends School. The versatile swingman played his AAU basketball for Team Takeover and was named first team All-Metro in In his Wildcat debut against West Chester, the 6-5 guard contributed 12 points and four rebounds in 29 minutes of activity. Jenkins was ranked No. 73 in the ESPN top 100 listing of the class of The native of Washington, D.C. played his AAU basketball for D.C. Assault and was named by the Washington Post as Metro Player of the Year. A sprained ankle suffered in the first half limited Jenkins to six minutes against West Chester. The freshman returned to practice this week and is expected to be available on Friday. Darryl Reynolds, 6-8, signed with Villanova in the spring. He played at er Merion School before moving to Worcester Academy for a post-graduate year. He logged 16 minutes against West Chester, adding three points, three rebounds and four blocked shots. Ennis Sidelined Sophomore guard Dylan Ennis suffered a broken third metacarpal bone in his right (shooting) hand on Oct. 24. He is expected to be sidelined for several more weeks. The 6-2 sophomore was preparing for his first season of eligibility in when the injury occurred. Ennis played his freshman season at Rice University in before transferring to Villanova in the spring of He sat out as a transfer last season though he did practice with the Wildcats. Pavilion Support Villanova owns a string of 137 consecutive regular season sellouts in the 6,500 seat facility, dating to It hosted 13 regular season games there in and the Wildcats won nine of those.
