1 Villanova Wildcats (1-0 overall, 0-0 BIG EAST) Game 1: Mount St. Mary s (0-1 overall, 0-0 Northeast Conference) Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013 The Pavilion ~ 7:00 p.m. Coverage Television: CBS Sports Network Tom McCarthy & Steve Lappas Radio: Villanova IMG Network Outlet: 1210 WPHT Ryan Fannon & Whitey Rigsby IT S WORTH NOTING... Senior swingman James Bell established a new career high in Friday night s victory over Lafayette with 24 points. That eclipses a 21-point effort recorded in a win over Seton Hall in The native of Orlando, Fla., also collected nine rebounds. Rebounding was a Wildcat strength last season but the graduation of leading rebounder Mouphtaou Yarou figures to be felt in Lafayette owned a edge in that category at halftime Friday night but the Cats were much better after intermission. VU owned a 25-9 advantage in that department after the break and outrebounded the Leopards Villanova connected on 21-of-54 (.389) from the field in its opener but was able to prevail in part because the Cats committed just seven turnovers. A year ago, VU kept its turnovers in single digits three times in 34 games with a low of seven (in a home win over Rutgers). VILLANOVA PROJECTED STARTERS Pos. No. Name Ht./Wt. 2 VILLANOVA WILDCATS GAMe NOTeS A Win on Opening Night The Villanova Wildcats used a 46- point second half to pull away from Lafayette on Friday night en route to a victory at the Pavilion in the regular season opener for both teams. It was VU s eleventh straight win on opening night. I thought they wore us down, stated Lafayette head coach and former Villanova guard Fran O Hanlon. After a game like that is over and you win you feel like it s a great game to open the season with, added Villanova coach Jay Wright. You really get tested there. That is a very well-coached, very good team. We re not surprised at all. We watched film of them in the (Patriot League) championship game and knew that they were just a really good team. They ll be good this year and next year. The Wildcats overcame a 5-of-30 shooting night from outside the 3-point arc. James Bell opened the scoring with a 3-point goal and carried the offensive load for the Wildcats in the early portion of the first half. The native of Orlando, Fla., reeled off VU s first 13 points while connecting on 5-of-7 from the field along the way. Lafayette used crisp offense to produce an 11-5 run that pulled the Leopards even at 11 six minutes into the period. The run was keyed by long distance shooting as Lafayette was 3-of-5 from deep over the game s first 8:01. Yet as the half wore on defense was the principal story. The Wildcats forced 12 Leopard turnovers to help offset a cold shooting half VU was 10-of-30 from the field and just 3-of-18 from outside the arc. Lafayette, meanwhile, stayed close in part due to a rebounding advantage and accuracy from deep (5-of-10). A pair of JayVaughn Pinkston free throws with 3.3 seconds left in the first half staked the Wildcats to a edge at intermission. Bell s 15 points led both teams in scoring and Pinkston chipped in with eight points. Sophomore Daniel Ochefu opened the scoring for the Wildcats to push the lead to before Lafayette reeled off an 8-0 burst to move out to a advantage. The margin grew to as the Leopards connected on 4-of-5 from the floor to open the second period. Villanova Roster But Villanova patiently fought its way back despite its long-range shooting difficulties. We have a year under our belts together, noted Bell. We re just comfortable. We know what to do in a given situation. We know how to fight in situations like that. The Wildcats rode the work of Pinkston and Hilliard in the lane and slowly expanded their edge after breaking a deadlock with 9:10 to play. From that point forward, Villanova outscored the Leopards with a lot of that damage coming from the free throw line. VU converted 28-of-38 from the charity stripe, led by Pinkston who was 10-of-14 there. We just had more big athletes than they did, stated Wright. It does wear you down. Wright praised the work of reserve point guard Tony Chennault. I thought Tony did a really good job as a senior point guard for us, stated Wright of the Philadelphia product who added five points, three assists and just one turnover. Tony really helped us. 3 VILLANOVA WILDCATS GAMe NOTeS Bell Pointed the Way He is the only Villanova player who can trace his lineage back to the season (fellow seniors Tony Chennault and Nick McMahon came on board later). For that reason and more, senior swingman James Bell is a pivotal figure for the Wildcats. On opening night, Bell made sure to help point the way for his younger mates. He scored VU s first 13 points and sank three of the team s five 3-point goals, including a huge one in the second half, to help spark the victory over Lafayette. He ended the night 7-of-16 from the field and was also 7-of-8 from the line - a career high in both of those categories. The native of Orlando, Fla., also collected nine rebounds in his 37 minutes of action. Bell s scoring production has usually been a good omen for the Wildcats. Villanova was 11-2 (.846) last season when Bell scored in double figures. Darrun Delivered No Wildcat took a more significant step forward between his freshman and sophomore seasons than guard Darrun Hilliard. His scoring average jumped to 11.4 ppg as he started all 34 games, closing with an 18-point, six rebound effort in VU s NCAA Tournament second round game against North Carolina. On opening night Hilliard again played a pivotal role for Villanova, especially in the second half when the Wildcats fell behind Lafayette. I m proud of Darrun, stated Wright. That might have been his best game he s played here. He s had games where he s scored more, but that was a great floor game by him. The product of Bethelehem, Pa., contributed 13 points and established a new career high with seven assists. He also was credited with five rebounds, three steals and a pair of blocked shots in his 35 minutes on the court. JayVaughn s Jump Redshirt sophomore JayVaughn Pinkston (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was named pre-season second team All-BIG EAST in voting by the league s coaches. The former Bishop Loughlin High School standout closed on a streak of 12 consecutive double-digit scoring efforts, culminating in a 20-point, eight rebound effort in the Cats NCAA Tournament loss to North Carolina. Pinkston picked up where he left off on Friday. The redshirt junior was 6-10 from the field and finished with 22 points in 33 minutes. One of Pinkston s scoring tools is his ability to get to the free throw line. Last year he averaged 7.1 attempts from the line per game and was 10-of-14 at the line on opening night. That 70 s Show If you are looking for a quick indicator on Villanova, keep an eye on the 70 point plateau. Over the course of the past few seasons, it has often provided extra insight into the Wildcats. When Villanova scored 70 or more points in a game in , it was 12-2 (.857). When it failed to reach that number, VU was 8-12 (.400). Over the last two plus seasons, the Cats are (.714) when scoring 70 or more points in a contest. On The Glass Sophomore forward Daniel Ochefu (Baltimore, Md.) has stepped into the void left by the graduation of his mentor, Mouphtaou Yarou, and helped the Wildcats where they can most use it - on the glass. Ochefu collected 11 rebounds in 19 minutes against Lafayette, including seven defensive caroms. He also chipped in with three blocked shots.

4 VILLANOVA WILDCATS GAMe NOTeS Tracking Triples It was an area that head coach Jay Wright described as his squad s achilles heel in Opponents converted.370 of their 3-point field goal attempts against the Wildcats in There were 10 occastions last season when the Wildcats allowed an opponent to drop in 10 or more 3-point goals. Villanova won only three of those games and none after Jan. 2. On opening night, Villanova was harmed by three as Lafayette converted 11-of-24 (.458) from deep. (Lafayette) is a great 3-point shooting team, noted Wright. But we have to keep working on it. Dylan s Delayed After patiently watching from the sidelines in following his transfer from Rice, Dylan Ennis was eagerly anticipating his Wildcats debut in But a broken third metacarpal bone in his right hand has postponed that date for now. Ennis suffered the injury on Oct. 24 and is presently wearing a cast on his right (shooting) hand. He is expected to be reevaluated later this month and there is not yet been a timetable placed upon his return to the lineup. The sophomore guard averaged 8.5 points and 4.3 rebounds per outing during the campaign at the Houston based school. He was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman squad for his efforts. Pavilion Support Villanova added to its string of consecutive regular season sellouts in the 6,500 seat facility in its season opener against Lafayette. That marked the 138th consecutive regular season sellout in the building, a run that dates to the campaign. Villanova has a lifetime record of (.802) in the building on Ithan Avenue. Since the season, the Wildcats are (.866) in the Pavilion. The Philadelphia Big Five Villanova will again be part of the historic Philadelphia Big Five City Series this season. The Cats will host four more BIG EAST games at the Center in , beginning with Creighton on Jan. 20. St. John s will be in South Philadelphia on Saturday, Feb., 22, with Marquette (Mar. 2) and Georgetown (Mar. 8) on tap there too.
