VU was 4-0 at Madison Square Garden last season and won the 2017 BIG EAST Tournament title there in March. It is 11-1 (.917) at the World s Most Famous Arena since This is Villanova s third appearance in the Jimmy V Classic. It lost to Texas in 2008 and downed Illinois in ~Redshirt freshman Omari Spellman didn t start in Saturday s win over Saint Joseph s after missing a targeted weight goal, but he quickly made an impact upon entering the game. He finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds and was 4-of-5 from beyond the 3-point arc. Since going 0--of-8 from the field against UNI in the title game of Battle 4 Atlantis, the Cleveland product is 13-of-20 from the field (.650) and has averaged 15.0 points,9.0 rebounds, 3.5 blocked shots and is the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. The Wildcats broke a close game open with a 26-2 spurt over the final 3:41 of the first half and the opening 2:37 of the second half. It was their 20th straight City Series triumph - the last loss in Big Five came in 2012 to Temple. After converting just 2-of-9 triple attempts to begin the day, the Wildcats went on to drop in their next 17-of- 26 attempts, including 10 in a row in the pivotal stretch. The 19 3-pointers dropped in by six different players - eclipsed the program record (17) established in a win over Lehigh in November We played great, stated Villanova head coach Jay Wright. They have two starters out and that s the bottom line. When you come into this environment, you don t know what the guys are going to react to. We played great and they re down two key guys. That s what happened. The Wildcats grabbed an early 9-4 lead after some good defensive work before Saint Joseph s answered with a 9-4 burst of its own to draw even at the first official timeout. Jalen Brunson helped Villanova regain the advantage at after 8:23 of action in the first period and the Wildcats never did relinquish the edge as Saint Joseph s remained close. The Hawks pulled to within after a traditional 3-point play by James Demery at the 3:41 mark of the first period. It felt like it could be turning into one of those Big Five nights, Wright said. We came ready to play but they really out-scrapped us early. We got a couple of fouls diving for loose balls because they got there first, We said in the huddle that we ve got to weather this. The Wildcats did that especially well over the final three plus minutes of the half, closing on a 12-0 run, ignited by 3-pointers from Phil Booth, Mikal Bridges and a pair from Omari Spellman to expand the lead to at halftime. I learned from the older guys how hard it was to play in this (Big Five) environment and how much we have to stick together, said Booth. That s what we tried to do. The start of the second half resembled the end of the first. The Wildcats picked up right where they left off, reeling off five straight points in the first minute and extending that to a 14-2 edge NEWS AND NOTES over the next2:37. The ball movement was crisp and Villanova converted its first four 3-pointers of the half. In one stretch the Cats reeled off 10 straight, helping to extend the lead to before the second half was three minutes old. We don t think about the shots falling, stated Bridges. It just happens from our defense. We kept looking for each other and making shots. The defensive end kind of helped us out. Wright found the effort exceptionally impressive with the specter of Tuesday night s battle with 2017 NCAA Finalist Gonzaga looming. That s one of the reasons I m proud of the guys, Wright stated. I know people are talking about that game because they are asking me about it. But our guys have great respect for Saint Joseph s and the kinds of battles these Big Five games are. JB s Been Dynamite At times, it s easy to look past the stat line of junior guard Jalen Brunson, the preseason choice as the BIG EAST Player of the Year. Such was the case in the win over the Hawks - he scored 14 points on a day when three other Wildcats scored more. Yet the raw data only tells a portion of the story. Brunson scored 11 of those points in the first 10:30 of the first half, when Villanova was struggling to find an offensive flow. And then he was credited with the assist on each of the 3-point field goals that helped Villanova expand its lead heading into halftime. Then there were the other areas where he lend an important hand. He finished the day with six assists and three rebounds in 26 minutes of activity. At 17.9 ppg, Brunson is tied with Mikal Bridges for the team scoring lead. At 6-3 he is converting 64 percent of his field goal attempts and has posted 36 assists on the season with only nine turnovers. For good measure, he adds 3.1 rebounds per outing. On Nov. 23, he became the 64th Wildcat to score 1,000 or more points. It starts with his character - he s just an old soul, noted head coach Jay Wright. He comes to work every day, mentally prepared, pyhsically prepared. He just has a great perspective on life. When you take that to the basketball court, he plays the same way - very intelligently, tough and very skilled.

3 Booth s Back Redshirt junior guard Phil Booth was forced to miss all but three games last season due to left knee inflamation. He subsequently received a medical redshirt from the NCAA and returned to the lineup in He has started all eight games for the Wildcats thus far and with every step further into the season has looked ever more comfortable. His best effort came Saturday as he scored 17 points, pulled down a career-best eight rebounds and added six assists to help spark the Wildcats to the win over Saint Joseph s. In his last two outings, he has averaged 15.5 points per game. I m getting there, stated Booth of his recovery. Every day I take it as though I am another day towards it. Physically I feel great. It s just getting back to the (flow) of the game. It s something I am adjusting to. Each game is valuable and each practice is as well. On the season, the native of Baltimore averages 11.1 points and 3.1rebounds per contest. His 3-point accuracy is on the upswing too and he is now 15-of-38 (.395). Bridges Building Redshirt junior Mikal Bridges is in a new role this season, as a team captain and hub of the offensive attack. A look at the early season statistics reflects the change. The versatile Bridges took 233 shots in an average of 6.5 attempts per game. Through eight games, with fellow starting forward Kris Jenkins and guard Josh Hart having graduated, there has been a more comprehensive role at the offensive end of the court for the gifted wing player from Great Valley High School. Bridges has attempted 90 shots - and made 51of them (.567). He is averaging 11.3 attempts per game. At 17.9 ppg he is tied with Brunson for the team scoring lead and also contributes 6.3 rpg. In the win over Penn he set the pace with 18 points and nine rebounds. My role has jumped up a little bit this year, Bridges stated. I have to be more of a leader on and off the court. I have to be more aggressive - last year we had Josh, Kris, and Jalen. My big thing was to become more aggressive. That s the big thing I worked on last spring, summer and even now. The recent burst has moved Bridges up to 748 career points. His 122 career steals currently rank 25th all-time at VU. D Tales Although its offensive fireworks tend to draw the headlines, Villanova s foundation is its defensive tenacity. NEWS AND NOTES On Saturday the Wildcats kept the Hawks in check, limiting Saint Joseph s to 21-of-64 shooting from the field (.328) and 5-of-24 (.208) from beyond the 3-point arc. They also blocked five shots, with four of those by Spellman. Talking Villanova Basketball The Villanova Basketball radio show, Talking Villanova Basketball with Jay Wright presented by Hartford Funds, opens its schedule on Monday, Dec. 11 at J.D. McGillicuddy s Restaurant in Wayne, Pa. This is the first of 10 shows to air on 610 Sports Radio over the course of the season. The second show takes place on Monday, Dec. 18 at 7 p.m. in the Talley Center at Villanova. Donte s Delivered Redshirt sophomore guard Donte DiVincenzo often serves as Villanova s sixth man. But he is, in the words of head coach Jay Wright, our sixth starter. The native of Wilmington offered a hand on Saturday with eight points, five assists and six rebounds in 28 minutes. On the season he averages 11.4 points and 4.4 rebounds per contest. Cats and Kansas Announce a New Series The Villanova Wildcats and Kansas Jayhawks have announced a two game series to begin at Allen Field House in with a second meeting set for the Wells Fargo Center in the season. Opponents this season are averaging 61.6 ppg against the Wildcats. A year ago, VU was 23-1 (.958) when holding its opponents to 65 or fewer points in a game. It is 6-0 in the circumstance this season (1.000). We re incredibly excited to renew a series with one of the most storied programs in college basketball, stated Villanova Director of Athletics Mark Jackson. Villanova will play at Kansas on Dec. 15, On Dec. 21, 2019 the Jayhawks will meet the Wildcats at the Wells Fargo Center.

4 NEWS AND NOTES Two For Tomorrow A pair of versatile and highly-regarded wing players have signed national letters of intent to enroll at Villanova in the fall of 2018, it was announced on Nov. 10. Brandon Slater, 6-6, of Fairfax, Va., and Cole Swider, 6-8, of Portsmouth, R.I. are set to become Wildcats next fall. We re thrilled to welcome two outstanding players and young men to our basketball family, stated Jay Wright. As a junior in , Slater averaged 15.2 ppg at Paul VI High School, where he played both guard and forward. Slater, who played his summer basketball for Team Takeover, is ranked at No. 70 in ESPN s Top 100 Class of 2018 Prospects. Brandon is a high-character young man from an awesome family, stated Wright. I think he has tremendous potential to become an outstanding Villanova guard. Swider attends St. Andrews School and emerged as one of the nation s top prospects over the last two seasons. As a junior he averaged 26.5 points per game at St. Andrews while displaying exceptional skill from long distance. He was ranked at No. 35 in the ESPN list of Top 100 players in the class of The passion Cole has for the game fits our culture perfectly, Wright stated. He s a highly skilled player from a great family who understands the game Season This is the 98th season of Wildcats basketball dating to the program s birth in Finneran Pavilion on the Horizon On Feb. 14, Villanova University s Board of Trustees formally approved a comprehensive renovation plan for the 31-year-old Pavilion on Villanova s campus. The significant $60 million renovation, which will be funded entirely by donor support, will transform the existing Pavilion creating a high-quality, gameday experience for Villanova students, faculty, staff, alumni and fans. The renovation of the Pavilion began in June Upon its projected reopening in the fall of 2018, the arena will officially be named the Finneran Pavilion. Progress on the renovation may be tracked for the official web site of the transition, finneranpavilion.com. Villanova recorded its 180th consecutive regular season sellout at the Pavilion against Crerighton on Feb. 25. The Wildcats closed out the original version of the Pavilion by going 10-1 in the facility in The Cats posted a lifetime record of (.825) at the building on Ithan Avenue.
