Prior to ascending to the No. 1 spot in February 2016, the Wildcats had never previously been atop the regular season polls since the program officially began play in ~ Redshirt junior Phil Booth had some rust to shake off after missing all but three games in due to a left knee injury that resulted in a medical redshirt. But he has heated up over the Wildcats last four games, converting 24-of-37 field goal attempts (.649), including 9-of-20 (.450) from beyond the 3-point arc. He has averaged 17.3 points, 2.5 assists,and 4.0 rebounds per outing in this stretch. The Baltimore native has raised his season scoring average to 12.7 points per game. ~ The victory over Gonzaga was the 396th in Jay Wright s tenure at Villanova. Austin 1 Overcame the Explorers Gritty defense and some explosive offense from redshirt junior Phil Booth (18 points) and redshirt sophomore Donte DiVincenzo (18 points and 10 rebounds) helped No. 4 Villanova stave off a challenge from La Salle Sunday. The Wildcats outlasted the Explorers before 10,611 at the Wells Fargo Center. The win was VU s 21st straight in the Philadelphia Big Five. The Explorers fell to 5-6 overall, 2-1 in the Big Five. They forced us into a lot of 1-on-1 situations and really executed their game plan better than we were able to execute ours, stated Wildcats head coach Jay Wright. It took guys making individual plays, which Phil, Donte and some of our older guys were able to do in the second half. La Salle led at halftime (38-37) and with 4:47 remaining on the game clock (62-61). But the Wildcats closed on a 16-8 run to earn the win. Through the game s first 10 minutes the 3-pointer played a significant role. La Salle drained 4-of-6 from beyond the arc while the Wildcats misfired on their first five attempts from deep. After consecutive 3-pointers by Amar Stukes, the Explorers led at the 11:33 mark of the first half. The Wildcats were able to slow the Explorers and crafted a lead after Donte DiVincenzo threaded a beautiful pass to an open Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree, who dunked it and dropped in the subsequent free throw with 7:56 to play in the first half. But a 13-5 burst from La Salle lifted the Explorers back in front with three minutes on the first half clock. La Salle pushed its lead to before a 3-pointer by Phil Booth temporarily gave the Wildcats back the lead at But Stukes raced down the court and dropped in a shot with just under two seconds on the clock in the period to give La Salle a lead at halftime. The Explorers connected on 50 percent of their first half field goal attempts (16-of-32) while VU converted.423 of its attempts, including just 2-of-10 from beyond the 3-point arc. Thirteen Wildcats free throws helped keep VU within one at the break. Jalen Brunson s nine points paced the Cats while B.J. Johnson led the Explorers with 12 points. The Explorers built their advantage to early in the period before the Wildcats used a 6-0 spurt, capped by a Booth 3-pointer to regain the lead. Villanova got the margin to at NEWS AND NOTES the 7:11 mark before the Explorers reeled off the next seven points to draw even at 60 with just over five minutes remaining. After Eric Paschall sank one of two free throw attempts, Isiah Deas dropped in a short runner to give the Explorers a lead. But Booth was fouled on a 3-point attempt and drained all three free throws to give VU back the lead at Then DiVincenzo drilled a 3-pointer from the right wing to make it with 3:59 on the clock. Villanova never trailed again. The final was Brunson added 17 points and seven assists for the Wildcats while B.J. Johnson paced the Explorers with 21 points. The Villanova Basketball season is presented by KeyBank. Starting Strong On their way to accumulating 139 wins since the start of the season, the Wildcats have been strong in the early part of the campaign. Since 13-14, Villanova is 59-3 (.952) overall in non BIG EAST regular season action. It was 13-0 in that category in (1.000). Ironically, two of those losses - to Oklahoma and Virginia - came in , when the Cats went on to win the NCAA national championship. The Efficiency of JB This will be Jalen Brunson s second visit to Temple, where his father Rick starred as point guard for coach John Chaney in the 1990 s and his mother Sandra was a part of the Track & Field team. As a freshman in 2016, Brusnon connected on 9-of-11 field goal attempts and finished with a then career-high of 25 points in just 23 minutes of action. This year, he is one of the Wildcats leaders and what stands out most has been his efficiency at the offensive end. The native of Lincolnshire, Ill., is 62-of-100 from the field thus far this season as a 6-3 guard (.620). He ranks sixth in the BIG EAST in that department. On Sunday, Brunson came up with 17 critical points in the win over La Salle and added seven assists with but a single turnover. For the season he has recorded 48 assists a.p.g. - with just 13 turnovers, an assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.7, which is the best among BIG EAST players. On Nov. 23, he became the 64th Wildcat to score 1,000 or more points. He enters Sunday s action with 1,083 points over the course of 86 career games, 85 of which have been starts.

3 It starts with his character - he s just an old soul, noted head coach Jay Wright. He comes to work every day, mentally prepared, pyhsically prepared. He just has a great perspective on life. When you take that to the basketball court, he plays the same way - very intelligently, tough and very skilled. Gillsepie Sidelined Though his early numbers seem somewhat modest ppg - freshman guard Collin Gillespie has served an important role as a reerve guard for the Wildcats. However, an injury to his left wrist suffered in practice kept him out of Sunday s game. We missed him today, stated Jay Wright after the win over La Salle. We needed another perimeter shooter. There is presently no time table for a return to action for the product of Archbishop Wood High School. Building Bridges One of the top individual performers in the early stages of the campaign has been redshirt junior forward Mikal Bridges. Bridges did not enjoy his most productive day at the offensive end in the win over the Explorers, connecting on 4-of-11 field goal attempts. But he still had a huge offensive rebound and score in the final minutes and ended the day with 10 points and eight caroms in 37 minutes of activity. The Malvern, Pa. native has led the Wildcats in scoring five times in 10 games thus far in His early production - he enters the game against the Owls averaging 18.1 ppg - has brought his career point total to 786 points, With 64 rebounds rpg - he is second on the team to Omari Spellman in that critical category. My role has jumped up a little bit this year, Bridges stated. I have to be more of a leader on and off the court. I have to be more aggressive - last year we had Josh, Kris, and Jalen. My big thing was to become more aggressive. That s the big thing I worked on last spring, summer and even now. Bridges also has 123 career steals, which ranks 25th all-time at VU. D Tales Although its offensive fireworks tend to draw the headlines, Villanova s foundation is its defensive tenacity. The Wildcats rank second in the BIG EAST in opponents points per game (63.3). Only St. John s has been more stingy (62.2 ppg). A season ago, VU was 23-1 (.958) when holding its opponents to 65 or fewer points in a game. It is 6-0 in the circumstance this season (1.000). On Omari Redshirt freshman forward Omari Spellman has already amassed some impressive accolades in his first month of collegiate basketbal competiton. The native of Cleveland has produced three double-doubles in 10 games and averages 9.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and just more than 25 minutes per game. Cats and Kansas Announce a New Series The Villanova Wildcats and Kansas Jayhawks have announced a two game series to begin at Allen Field House in with a second meeting set for the Wells Fargo Center in the season. Donte Stepped Up Redshirt sophomore guard Donte DiVincenzo stepped up in a major way last season when Phil Booth was stymied by a knee injury that kep him out after Thanksgiving. On Sunday, the man from Wilmington, Del., helped the Wildcats hold off the Explorers. DiVincenzo entered the contest after Eric Paschall was whistled for two fouls in the game s first 27 seconds. He would go on to play all Villanova will play at Kansas on Dec. 15, On Dec. 21, 2019 the Jayhawks will meet the Wildcats at the Wells Fargo Center. KenPom s Calculations Before it rose to No.1 in the national pols, Villanova was tops in the advanced metrics of Ken Pomeroy. The Wildcats remain there this week. They rank third nationally in Adjusted Offensive Efficiency (119.9) and seventh in Adjust Defensive Efficiency (90.7).

4 NEWS AND NOTES Two For Tomorrow A pair of versatile and highly-regarded wing players have signed national letters of intent to enroll at Villanova in the fall of 2018, it was announced on Nov. 10. Brandon Slater, 6-6, of Fairfax, Va., and Cole Swider, 6-8, of Portsmouth, R.I. are set to become Wildcats next fall. We re thrilled to welcome two outstanding players and young men to our basketball family, stated Jay Wright. As a junior in , Slater averaged 15.2 ppg at Paul VI High School, where he played both guard and forward. Slater, who played his summer basketball for Team Takeover, is ranked at No. 70 in ESPN s Top 100 Class of 2018 Prospects. Brandon is a high-character young man from an awesome family, stated Wright. I think he has tremendous potential to become an outstanding Villanova guard. Swider attends St. Andrews School and emerged as one of the nation s top prospects over the last two seasons. As a junior he averaged 26.5 points per game at St. Andrews while displaying exceptional skill from long distance. He was ranked at No. 35 in the ESPN list of Top 100 players in the class of The passion Cole has for the game fits our culture perfectly, Wright stated. He s a highly skilled player from a great family who understands the game Season This is the 98th season of Wildcats basketball dating to the program s birth in Finneran Pavilion on the Horizon On Feb. 14, Villanova University s Board of Trustees formally approved a comprehensive renovation plan for the 31-year-old Pavilion on Villanova s campus. The significant $60 million renovation, which will be funded entirely by donor support, will transform the existing Pavilion creating a high-quality, gameday experience for Villanova students, faculty, staff, alumni and fans. The renovation of the Pavilion began in June Upon its projected reopening in the fall of 2018, the arena will officially be named the Finneran Pavilion. Progress on the renovation may be tracked for the official web site of the transition, finneranpavilion.com. Villanova recorded its 180th consecutive regular season sellout at the Pavilion against Crerighton on Feb. 25. The Wildcats closed out the original version of the Pavilion by going 10-1 in the facility in The Cats posted a lifetime record of (.825) at the building on Ithan Avenue.
