1 No. 6/6 Villanova Wildcats (22-2 overall, 10-1 Big East) Game 25: Creighton Bluejays (20-4 overall, 10-2 Big East) Sunday, Feb. 15, 2014 CenturyLink Center ~ 5:00 p.m. (ET) Coverage Television: Fox Sports 1 Justin Kutcher & Donny Marshall Radio: Villanova IMG Network Outlet: CBS Sports Radio 610 Ryan Fannon & Whitey Rigsby IT S WORTH NOTING... With its win on Wednesday night at DePaul, Villanova matched its best 24-game start in school history. The Wildcats have started 22-2 twice before, in and Both of those teams were unsuccessful in their quest to reach 23-2 with each unit falling to Connecticut. Since surrendering 181 points in consecutive games against Creighton and Marquette in January, the Wildcats have tightened up defensively. In the five games since - all wins - Villanova has limited its opponents to 61.4 ppg. VU s foes have connected on 108-of-274 field goal attempts (.394) in that stretch and are 32-of-95 (.337) from beyond the 3-point arc. The Wildcats are in the midst of a span of three consecutive road games. Following the conclusion of the game at Creighton, they will fly directly to Providence to prepare for Tuesday night s matchup with the Friars at the Dunkin Donuts Center (7:00 p.m./fox Sports 1). 2 VILLANOVA WILDCATS GAME NOTES Downed DePaul With a winter storm brewing back in Philadelphia, Villanova took care of the business at hand in Rosemont, Ill., with an win over DePaul Wednesday night. The Wildcats then zipped over to O Hare Airport to catch a charter flight that delivered them back to Philadelphia in the early stages of a winter storm that ultimately delivered upwards of 10 inches of snow to the region. Villanova fell behind 6-2 but was in front at the first official time out with 15:03 to play in the first half. It never trailed again and matched a season high with 48 first half points (they had earlier hit that number against USC on Thanksgiving Day.) The Wildcats would go on to post an win over the Blue Demons. In the teams first meeting of the season, Villanova posted an triumph over DePaul at the Pavilion. One key for Villanova in the win was its work from beyond the 3-point arc: VU was 15-of-25 from deep, establishing season highs in 3-pointers made and 3-point percentage (.577). Times Shared The Wildcats unselfishness Wednesday night was underscored in the assist column: Villanova finished with 16 assists on 27 field goals. It came from extra passing, noted VU head coach Jay Wright. I think we passed up good shots and we got great shots. That is something good teams do. We did that well. Ryan Arcidiacono led the way with six helpers on the evening. That 70 s Show If you are looking for a quick indicator on Villanova, keep an eye on the 70 point plateau. Over the last two plus seasons, the Cats are (.815) when scoring 70 or more points in a contest and are 20-0 this season when surpassing the 70-point plateau. In contrast, they are 2-2 (.333) when failing to go north of that number. The Wildcats average 80.7 ppg and have been in a nip and tuck battle with Creighton (80.0 ppg) over the course of the regular season as the top scoring team in the BIG EAST for all games. VU averages 79.7 ppg through 11 BIG EAST games. Bell Tolls James Bell is in his second season as a Villanova captain and he s been the Wildcats version of Mr. Dependable. Lately he has begun to receive more recognition nationally for his work. On Feb. 13 it was announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club that the Orlando, Fla., native is one of 30 midseason candidates for the Naismith Tropy. He is one of three BIG EAST players on the list, joining Bryce Cotton of Providence and Doug McDermott of Creighton. Bell has been especially effective over the last four weeks. In the Wildcats last eight games he is 55-of-101 (.545) from the field and 32-of-63 (.508) from beyond the 3-point arc. He has averaged 20.5 points and 5.6 rebounds per game in this period. The senior ranks ninth in the BIG EAST in scoring at 16.0 ppg. He was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on Feb. 10 for the second time this season. Bell s scoring production has usually been a good omen for the Wildcats. VU is 26-4 (.867) since the start of last season when the native of Orlando scores in double figures. 3 VILLANOVA WILDCATS GAME NOTES Kris Contribution Wildcat freshman forward Kris Jenkins provided Villanova with a significant boost on Wednesday night. With fellow forwards Daniel Ochefu and JayVaughn Pinkston grappling with foul trouble - Ochefu ultimately fouled out - Jenkins got the call and delivered in a big way. Last season s Washington Post prep player of the year chipped in with 11 points and pair of rebounds in 15 minutes of action. The point total was one below his season-high set in the final of the Battle 4 Atlantis championship game against Iowa. Pinkston s Production As noted, Pinkston was limited to 26 minutes with second half foul trouble. Yet it didn t stop him from producing his second double-double of the season and sixth of his career as he finished the evening with 14 points and 11 rebounds. For the season, Pinkston is 119-of-230 from the field (.517), which ranks fifth in the BIG EAST. One of the strengths of Pinkston s game is his knack for getting to the foul line. Already this season he is 111-of-143 (.776) at the charity stripe. Only Bryce Cotton (174) and D Angelo Harrison (163) have visited the line more often among BIG EAST players. Pinkston now has 1,118 points in his three seasons as a Wildcat. He needs five points to move past John Olive and Howard Brown into 51st place on the school s all-time list. Board Scores The Wildcats feature just one player taller than 6-7 in their regular rotation (Daniel Ochefu) but have been solid on the boards. VU has out-rebounded its opponent in 17 of 24 games thus far, and its +4.6 rebound margin ranks third in the BIG EAST. BIG EAST Strength Shows With the postseason rapidly approaching, the BIG EAST is well positioned to place multiple teams in the final bracket. Consider these facts, through games of Feb The BIG EAST has seven teams in the top-60 of the latest KenPom Rankings, second only to the ACC, Big 12 and Pac- 12 (more total members), and more than the Big Ten, SEC and all other leagues. - Nine league schools have a strength of schedule in the top-50 according to KenPom, more than any other league, and seven are ranked in the top 75 of the RPI. - KenPom ranks the BIG EAST as the third-toughest conference in the country, thanks in part to the narrow differential (second-smallest among all leagues) between its top and bottom programs. From Last Time Much was naturally made of Creighton s BIG EAST record setting night from beyond the 3-point arc in the first meeting between the teams at the Wells Fargo Center on Jan. 20. Less noticed was the other end, where VU recorded a season-low 27 second half points. The Wildcats were held to 39 percent shooting and 68 points. JayVaughn Pinkston contributed 19 points and seven rebounds while VU connected on 14-of-26 3-point field goals on the night... VU is 4-5 at the Dunkin Donuts Center since Jay Wright became head coach in DH Rule His efficiency is sometimes overlooked but the steady work from junior guard Darrun Hilliard has been instrumental in Villanova s rise up the national rankings. The native of Bethlehem, Pa., was an offensive force in the win at DePaul, converting 7-of-9 field goal attempts and dropping in 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. His 22 points were a season high in that department. Hilliard has reached double figures in scoring in 21 of the Cats 24 contests this season. He also averages 1.3 steals per game. Improved Accuracy The Wildcats connected on 27-of-49 field goal attempts at DePaul (.551) and have converted 49 percent or better in each of their last four outings. In fact, they are 118-of-218 (.541) from the field in February, which has included wins over Temple, Xavier, Seton Hall and DePaul. On the season, Villanova is 634-of-1358 from the field (.467), which places them third in the BIG EAST. Through 24 games a year ago, the Wildcats were converting at a 41 percent clip as their record stood at 15-9 en route to a finish that included a return to the NCAA Tournament.

4 VILLANOVA WILDCATS GAME NOTES Wildcats Signed Pair to NLI A pair of skilled perimeter players have signed national letters of intent to attend Villanova, it was announced today. Guard Phil Booth of Mount St. Joseph High School (Maryland) and Mikal Bridges of Great Valley High School (Pa.) will both enroll in the fall of We re thrilled to welcome Phil and Mikal to our basketball family, stated head coach Jay Wright. Booth is a 6-2 guard who averaged 17 points, eight assists and seven rebounds as a junior at Mount St. Joseph s in and was named first team All-Baltimore Catholic League. He is listed among espn.com s top 100 seniors in the class of 2014 (No. 93). The Booth family has roots in Philadelphia as Phil Booth Sr. is a native of the city who played at Northeast High School in the city before playing college basketball at Coppin State University. Phil Booth comes from a great basketball family, stated Wright. Phil is a classic Villanova guard and an outstanding student. We feel he is very well prepared for our style of play. Coach (Pat) Clatchey has done a great job with guards. We are excited to have an outstanding player from a prestigious program on board. Bridges, 6-7, who attends Great Valley High School in nearby Malvern, Pa., is also ranked among in the espn.com list of the top 100 seniors (No. 82). As a junior he averaged 20 points and eight rebounds per contest for a unit that finished with a 28-4 record. Mikal is a multi-talented perimeter player that can play a lot of positions for us, noted Wright. We re proud to welcome him and his family to the Nova Nation. He plays for a great coach in Jim Nolan and will be well prepared for the college game. Pavilion Support Villanova added to its string of consecutive regular season sellouts in the 6,500 seat facility in a Feb. 7 win over Seton Hall. That marked the 148th consecutive regular season sellout in the building, a run that dates to the campaign. Villanova has a lifetime record of (.808) in the building on Ithan Avenue. Since the season, the Wildcats are (.872) in the Pavilion. Perfect in the Philadelphia Big Five Villanova swept all four of its games in the Philadelphia Big Five this season to claim its 22nd title.
