The third time was the charm for Villanova on Tuesday evening as Ryan Arcidiacono s traditional 3-point play on the final Wildcats possession of the second overtime lifted VU past Providence Two earlier final possession bids for the win had come up short for Villanova. VU is now 4-0 in overtime in Senior James Bell continued his steady march towards the 1,000 point club on Tuesday night. The Orlando, Fla., product added 17 points and nine rebounds against the Friars. That performance raises Bell s career point total to 974 entering the contest against St. John s This is the first of three consecutive home dates for the Wildcats. Up next is a Wednesday clash at the Pavilion against Butler (8:00 p.m./fox Sports 1). VU will host its Senior Night celebration prior to the game. 2 VILLANOVA WILDCATS GAME NOTES Outlasted the Friars Sophomore Ryan Arcidiacono sank a driving layup with 3.6 seconds to go to help lift No. 9 Villanova to an victory over Providence in double overtime at the Dunkin Donuts Center. The Wildcats improved to 23-3 overall, 11-2 in the BIG EAST, including 4-0 in overtime games this season, and 3-0 after suffering a loss. Providence falls to overall, 7-7 in conference play. That s what the Big East is all about, stated Villanova head coach Jay Wright. That was a great college basketball game. I thought Providence was great and we made big plays when we needed them. I m still trying to get over the Creighton loss (on Sunday). But these guys are so resilient. They re past it, even if I m still trying to get there. The win came at the end of a six-day stretch where the Wildcats played three games on the road and covered many air miles visiting Chicago, Omaha and Rhode Island. Villanova defeated DePaul last Wednesday night, fell to Creighton on Sunday and finished the week at 2-1 with this victory. Villanova look poised to win at the end of regulation when it held a lead after two Arcidiacono free throws with 1:08 left. But a pair of free throws by Providence standout Bryce Cotton cut the PC deficit to and a James Bell bid to re-establish the five point edge rolled off the rim with 35 second left in regulation. Then LaDontae Henton drained a 3-pointer from the right side to even matters at 63 with 21 seconds left. We thought they were going to look for Cotton or (Josh) Fortune, stated Wright. Give them credit. They went to Henton and he made the shot. Arcidiacono had the basketball in his hands on the final possession and was unable to convert. Harris grabbed the rebound and the Friars moved it quickly to Henton, who missed a running righthander just before the horn. We practice end of game situations all the time, noted Arcidiacono. The Blue team never gets a call so we know we just have to keep working. Providence grabbed the early edge in the first overtime before a Darrun Hilliard 3-pointer gave the Wildcats a lead with under a minute to play. But Cotton Villanova Roster finished with an acrobatic move to the basket to tie the score with 26 seconds to play in the session. Villanova again had the ball for the last possession but couldn t convert. Pinkston helped VU gain the upper hand in the second overtime with a pair of clutch hoops. The second of those came with 44 seconds left in the game and staked VU to a advantage. However, Cotton sank another huge basket, this one a triple off of an offensive rebound, to knot matters at 79 with 26 seconds left. This time, the Wildcats made the most of the final possession. Arcidiacono maneuvered himself on the dribble down the left side of the lane and got a layup on to the glass while being fouled with 3.6 seconds to go. He added the free throw and then VU watched as a final 3-point bid from Henton caromed off the rim. 3 VILLANOVA WILDCATS GAME NOTES That 70 s Show If you are looking for a quick indicator on Villanova, keep an eye on the 70 point plateau. Over the last two plus seasons, the Cats are (.804) when scoring 70 or more points in a contest and are 21-1 this season when surpassing the 70-point plateau (.955). In contrast, they are 2-2 (.333) when failing to go north of that number. Villanova ranks second to Creighton (81.0 ppg) among BIG EAST squads in scoring at 80.7 ppg. Bell Tolls James Bell is in his second season as a Villanova captain and he s been the Wildcats version of Mr. Dependable. Lately he has begun to receive more recognition nationally for his work. On Feb. 13 it was announced by the Atlanta Tipoff Club that the Orlando, Fla., native is one of 30 midseason candidates for the Naismith Tropy. He is one of three BIG EAST players on the list, joining Bryce Cotton of Providence and Doug McDermott of Creighton. The product of Montverde Academy has found his offensive groove since a four point effort in the Jan. 11 win over St. John s at Madison Square Garden. In the nine games since he has averaged 22.1 points and 6.7 rebounds per outing. He was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll earlier this week and is a two-time BIG EAST Player of the Week. In Tuesday s win at Providence, Bell cooled off from the field, sinking 6-of-17 attempts. Yet he still ended the evening with 17 points and a team-high nine rebounds in a career high 47 minutes of action. Bell s scoring production has usually been a good omen for the Wildcats. VU is 26-5 (.839) since the start of last season when the native of Orlando scores in double figures. JP s Path When Villanova needed crunch time scoring on Tuesday night, it turned to junior forward JayVaughn Pinkston. The native of Brooklyn, N.Y. scored two huge buckets in the paint in the final 2:21 of the second overtime to help Villanova secure the win. He ended the night connecting on 8-of-12 field goal attempts to finish with 20 points, six rebounds and two assists. For the season, Pinkston is 130-of-248 from the field (.524). That places him fifth in field goal percentage among BIG EAST players this season and he has scored in double figures in 12 of the 13 conference games VU has played thus far. In addition, Pinkston has also picked up his rebounding pace over the last eight games. In that stretch he has averaged 7.3 rpg to raise his season average to 5.9 rpg. He has 488 career rebounds over three seasons, an average of 5.3 per outing. Pinkston now has 1,153 points in his three seasons as a Wildcat. He is now in 48th place all-time and can move past Harold Jensen with three more points. Board Scores The Wildcats were outrebounded by the largest margin of their season at Providence (45-34). Ryan s Recap The varied options available at the offensive end have changed the role of All BIG EAST Rookie team selection Ryan Arcidiacono. He averages 10.0 ppg after averaging a shade under 12 a season ago. Yet the scoring numbers only begin to tap into the co-captain s value to the Wildcats. He has consistently come through at crunch time, as evidenced by his game-winner at Providence. He ended the night with a season-high 21 points. Arcidiacono s 98 assists this season come with just 32 turnovers. His assist to turnover ratio of 3:1 is second in the BIG EAST. Only Creighton s Jahenns Manigat is better (3.7). Daniel s Song The progression of Daniel Ochefu has been one of the more telling themes of Villanova s BIG EAST campaign. The sophomore from Baltimore has given the Wildcats an added interior dimension as he has emerged. At Providence, the 6-11 forward contributed 11 points on 5- of-8 shooting from the field. He also added eight rebounds and a pair of steals in 36 minutes of activity. In BIG EAST play, Ochefu is 43-of-59 from the field (.729) to lead the conference in that category.

4 VILLANOVA WILDCATS GAME NOTES Wildcats Signed Pair to NLI A pair of skilled perimeter players have signed national letters of intent to attend Villanova, it was announced today. Guard Phil Booth of Mount St. Joseph High School (Maryland) and Mikal Bridges of Great Valley High School (Pa.) will both enroll in the fall of We re thrilled to welcome Phil and Mikal to our basketball family, stated head coach Jay Wright. Booth is a 6-2 guard who averaged 17 points, eight assists and seven rebounds as a junior at Mount St. Joseph s in and was named first team All-Baltimore Catholic League. He is listed among espn.com s top 100 seniors in the class of 2014 (No. 93). The Booth family has roots in Philadelphia as Phil Booth Sr. is a native of the city who played at Northeast High School in the city before playing college basketball at Coppin State University. Phil Booth comes from a great basketball family, stated Wright. Phil is a classic Villanova guard and an outstanding student. We feel he is very well prepared for our style of play. Coach (Pat) Clatchey has done a great job with guards. We are excited to have an outstanding player from a prestigious program on board. Bridges, 6-7, who attends Great Valley High School in nearby Malvern, Pa., is also ranked among in the espn.com list of the top 100 seniors (No. 82). As a junior he averaged 20 points and eight rebounds per contest for a unit that finished with a 28-4 record. Mikal is a multi-talented perimeter player that can play a lot of positions for us, noted Wright. We re proud to welcome him and his family to the Nova Nation. He plays for a great coach in Jim Nolan and will be well prepared for the college game. Pavilion Support Villanova added to its string of consecutive regular season sellouts in the 6,500 seat facility in a Feb. 7 win over Seton Hall. That marked the 148th consecutive regular season sellout in the building, a run that dates to the campaign. Villanova has a lifetime record of (.808) in the building on Ithan Avenue. Since the season, the Wildcats are (.872) in the Pavilion. Perfect in the Philadelphia Big Five Villanova swept all four of its games in the Philadelphia Big Five this season to claim its 22nd title. The Wildcats defeated Penn (77-54), Saint Joseph s (98-68), La Salle (73-52) and Temple (90-64). It represented VU s first 4-0 mark in City Series play since At the Center The Wildcats host four games at the Wells Fargo Center this season.
