Mikal Bridges scored 19 points to lead Villanova before fouling out late in the contest. Jalen Brunson added 14 points before he too went to the sidelines with his fifth foul with just over one minute remaining. That was just a tough BIG EAST matchup, stated VU head coach Jay Wright. Credit to Providence. They outplayed us and out-toughed us. They out-rebounded us and got to the foul line more than us. As it did on Saturday at home against Butler, Villanova found itself in an early hole after the Friars reeled off seven consecutive points to open the game. Providence converted 5-of-7 from the field in the first 4:33 and it allowed the Friars to grab an 11-6 advantage over VU in the game s early minutes. Defense allowed Villanova to slow the Friars early surge even as it battled to find its own groove at the offensive end. A driving dunk by redshirt freshman Omari Spellman gave the Wildcats their first lead of the game at with just more than seven minutes to play before halftime. But the Wildcats never did get their offense untracked in the first period and failed to score a field goal over the final 5:17 of the period. That allowed Providence to grab a lead at halftime despite converting just 10-of-32 field goal attempts. However, the Friars did drain three from beyond the 3-point arc while the Wildcats were held scoreless (0-of-7) in that department in the first 20 minutes. It resulted in Villanova s lowest scoring half of Six points from Brunson and Bridges led the Cats, who were 9-of-23 from the field in the half (.391). After a Brunson runner in transition on the Wildcats first possession of the second half got Villanova to within 27-25, Providence enjoyed a breakthrough from deep. It drained 3-of-4 in the first 3:48 of the half including two after collecting offensive rebounds to build its largest lead of the night, The Friars offense continued to supply answers to each Villanova push. When the Wildcats closed to within after sinking their first 3-pointer of the evening by Mikal Bridges Providence responded with a surge of its own. NEWS AND NOTES A steal by Isaiah Jackson led to a traditional 3-point play that pushed the Friars lead to Providence extended its margin to after dropping in a pair of free throws with 3:34 left in the contest. Villanova rallied furiously led by Collin Gillespie, who finished with 10 points and got to within three points twice in the final minute. But Providence held off the charge and registered the win that brought some of the sellout crowd of 12,887 charging on to the court at the final horn. The Villanova Basketball season is prevented by KeyBank. D Tales Although much of the focus in Wednesday night s loss at Providence surrounded the struggles from beyond the arc, there was another element to the defeat. Indeed, after a solid first half of defense, the Wildcats slipped in the final 20 minutes, allowing 49 points in the second half as the Friars kept VU at bay. It was the 14th time this season that Villanova had permitted an opponent to score 40 or more points in a period. Over their last six games, Villanova has surrendered 77.6 ppg. The Wildcats have gone 4-2 in that stretch. In the three games which preceded those six, VU allowed 62.0 ppg while winning three straight over Georgetown, Connecticut, and Providence. One item worth noting. The most recent six-game stretch coincides with the absence of redshirt junior guard Phil Booth, who has been out of action with a fractured bone in his right (shooting) hand suffered on Jan. 23 vs. Providence. Entering the weekend, the Wildcats Adjusted Defensive Efficiency per the advanced metrics of Ken Pomeroy at kenpoom.com was 97.9 points per 100 possessions. That figure is 42nd nationally. In December, VU was listed in the Top 15 of that category. In BIG EAST Conference games, the Wildcats rank thind in Scoring Defense at 77.9 ppg and second in Field Goal Percentage Defense (.450). But they have slipped to sixth in the conference in 3-point Percentge Defense (.362).

3 Turnovers Spelled Trouble Over the course of its first 25 games this season, Villanova had been one of the nation s most efficient offensive units, leading the kenpom.com advanced metrics entering play at Providence with better than 129 points per 100 possessions. Providence, however, forced Villanova into a season high 19 turnovers. That helped the Friars establish a margin in points scored off of turnovers, no small matter in a game decided by five points. You have to give Providence credit, stated Jay Wright. They really got into us defensively where we couldn t get teammates shots. They upset our tempo - I would have thought we would have handled it better. We didn t. Entering this weekend s action, Villanova ranks third in the BIG EAST in turnover margin at Though it s points per 100 possessions has dropped to 127.7, it still leads the nation in the Adjusted Offensive Efficiency category at kenpom.com. Must See JB National Player of the Year candidate Jalen Brunson has been a guiding force as the Wildcats have accumulated 23 victories by the middle of February. Last week Brunson was named one of 10 finalists for the Bob Cousy Award, given annually to the nation s top point guard. It is his second consecutive season as a Cousy finalist. In addition, Brunson is among 20 athletes listed on the Wendy s John R. Wooden Award Late Season Watch List. The junior averages 19.8 points per game, which is fifth in the BIG EAST. He ranks sixth in the conference for Field Goal Percentage (.542); fifth in assists (4.7 apg); eighth in 3-point percentage (.438); and first in assists-to-turnover ratio (3.1). Brunson has scored 1,426 points in the Blue and White, which ranks 34th all-time at Villanova. Stated Creighton coach Greg McDermott: earlier thi smonth Jalen Brunson, I think is getting more national attention and if I was in the NBA I would certainly want him on my team. He impacts winning in so many ways. If you need him to score he scores, if you need him to distribute he distributes, he s got toughness, he s got moxie and his leadership skills are just off the charts. That offense with the ball in his hands is truly hard to guard. O Show Redshirt freshman forward Omari Spellman came within a single rebound Wednesday night of recording his fourth straight double-double. He finished the night with 11 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots in 33 minutes despite having to don a protective face mask for the first time in his career after suffering a fractured facial bone in the win over Butler last week. Spellman already has eight double-doubles this seaosn. In the month of February the 6-10 native of Cleveland has averaged 14.4 points and 9.2 rebounds per contest. He leads the Wildcats with 7.7 rebounds per game this season, third in the BIG EAST. Classmate Jermaine Samuels suffered a smiliar injury in a win at DePaul on Dec. 27 and missed six weeks. Both have returned to make an impact of late.

4 NEWS AND NOTES Gillespie has averaged 9.0 ppg over his last three games, including a 10 point effort at Providence. Samuels practiced just once before returning to the lineup on Feb. 7 vs. St. John s and has provided vital minutes too. He has grabbed 13 rebounds since re-entering the lineup. Building Bridges Villanova s second member of the Wooden Award Late-season Top 20 - alongside Brunson - is redshirt junior forward Mikal Bridges. The product of Malvern, Pa., averages 16.5 points; 5.6 rebounds, and 1.6 steals pergame. Earlier this month he became the 65th Villanova player to score 1,000 or more points in his career (1,031). On The Sidelines On Jan. 23, redshirt juniot guard Phil Booth fractured a bone in his hand. The Baltimore native started all 20 games for the Wildcats prior to his injury, averaging 11.6 points per game. He has missed the last six games. Five Straight Big Five Titles Villanova extended its record shattering streak of victories in the Philadelphia Big Five to 22 in , posting its fifth consecutive 4-0 campaign against its City Series rivals Penn, La Salle, Saint Joseph s and Temple. Two For Tomorrow A pair of versatile and highly-regarded wing players have signed national letters of intent to enroll at Villanova in the fall of 2018, it was announced on Nov. 10. Brandon Slater, 6-6, of Fairfax, Va., and Cole Swider, 6-8, of Portsmouth, R.I. are set to become Wildcats next fall. As a junior in , Slater averaged 15.2 ppg at Paul VI High School, where he played both guard and forward. Slater, who played his summer basketball for Team Takeover, is ranked at No. 70 in ESPN s Top 100 Class of 2018 Prospects. Brandon is a high-character young man from an awesome family, stated Wright. I think he has tremendous potential to become an outstanding Villanova guard. Swider attends St. Andrews School and emerged as one of the nation s top prospects over the last two seasons. As a junior he averaged 26.5 points per game at St. Andrews while displaying exceptional skill from long distance. He was ranked at No. 35 in the ESPN list of Top 100 players in the class of The passion Cole has for the game fits our culture perfectly, Wright stated. He s a highly skilled player from a great family who understands the game. Finneran Pavilion on the Horizon On Feb. 14, Villanova University s Board of Trustees formally approved a comprehensive renovation plan for the 31-year-old Pavilion on Villanova s campus. The significant $60 million renovation, which will be funded entirely by donor support, will transform the existing Pavilion creating a high-quality, gameday experience for Villanova students, faculty, staff, alumni and fans. The renovation of the Pavilion began in June Upon its projected reopening in the fall of 2018, the arena will officially be named the Finneran Pavilion. Villanova recorded its 180th consecutive regular season sellout at the Pavilion against Crerighton on Feb. 25. The Wildcats closed out the original version of the Pavilion by going 10-1 in the facility in The Cats posted a lifetime record of (.825) at the building on Ithan Avenue BIG EAST STANDINGS As of games played through Feb. 16, 2018 Overall BIG EAST Xavier Villanova Creighton Providence Butler Seton Hall Marquette Georgetown DePaul St. John s AWARDS Jalen Brunson: BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year Bob Cousy Award Watch List Associated Press Preseason All-American Oscar Robertson Trophy Watch List Citizen Naismith Trophy Watch List Mikal Bridges All-BIG EAST Preseason Second Team Julius Erving Award Watch List Omari Spellman BIG EAST Preseason Freshman of the Year BIG EAST Freshman of the Week (Nov. 13, Dec. 4) JAY WRIGHT VS.
