It marked the 21st time in 36 games this season that the Wildcats have drained a dozen or more 3-pointers in a game. Their two game total of 31 3-pointers in the NCAA First and Second Rounds, is the second highest total recorded in the opening rounds (32- Loyola Marymount in 1990). ~ Saturday s victory over Alabama was Villanova s 32nd of the season. The Wildcats are the first program in NCAA history to record 32 or more wins in four consecutive seasons. Over the last five seasons, VU is (.885). It has not lost consecutive games in five straight seasons. ~ Villanova improved to (.676) in NCAA Tournament play under Jay Wright with its win over Alabama. A timeline of them is below: - With wins over Western Kentucky, Tennessee and Northern Iowa, the Wildcats claimed the 2017 Battle 4 Atlantis championship. It marked their fifth consecutive in-season tournament title as Jalen Brusnon was named Tournament Most Outstanding Player. - For the fifth time in as many seasons, Villanova was perfect in November (7-0). The Wildcats last loss in the season s 11th month came in 2012, a overtime defeat at La Salle. - Villanova defeated Ivy League champion Penn, Saint Joseph s, La Salle and Temple to claim its fifth consecutive Philadelphia Big Five title. The Wildcats have won 22 straight games against their local rivals, the longest such streak in City Series annals, which began in For the second straight season, the Wildcats completed an undefeated non-conference schedule with a Jan. 20 win (81-61) at former BIG EAST rival Connecticut in Hartford. - Despite a series of injuries to rotation regulars Collin Gillespie, Jermaine Samuels, Phil Booth, and Eric Paschall, the Wildcats finished at 14-4 in the BIG EAST, second in the league standings to Xavier. Villaonva endured a grueling nine game month of February (6-3) and was without starters Booth and Paschall vs. St. John s (Feb. 7) and Butler (Feb. 10). - Villanova earned the school s fourth BIG EAST Tournament title with a overtime win over Providence. A pair of Jalen Brunson free throws tied the score at 60 and Villanova got a defensive stop on the final possession of regulation. VU outscored the Friars 16-6 in overtime.. - A pair of strong defensive efforts helped the Wildcats post convincing victories over No. 16 seed Radford (87-61) in the NCAA Tournament First Round and No. 9 seed Alabama (81-58) in the Second Round in Pittsburgh. It marked the first time in the Wildcas NCAA Tournament history that they posted consecutive NCAA Tournament wins by 20 or more points. - Villanova advanced to its 11th NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 appearnace and second in the last three seasons. It moved on to Boston, where the Wildcats downed Duke (77-54) and Pittsburgh (78-76) to advance to the 2009 Final Four. The Villanova Basketball season is prevented by KeyBank. NEWS AND NOTES Building Bridges After a midseason lull during which he dealt with a nagging ankle injury, Mikal Bridges has taken his play to a new level of success. In February Bridges averaged 19.0 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. On Feb. 7 against St. John s Bridges became the 65th player to score 1,000 or more points as a Wildcat. Bridges worksheet in the month of March has been equally impressive. After being limited to one first half point after misfiring on all five of his attempts from the floor, Bridges connected on 7-of-11 attempts for 22 points after halftime, igniting a 49-point Wildcats second half explosion. For the month of March, Bridges has averaged 21.3 points and 5.0 rebounds per game through sixcontests. For good measure he picked up the Dave Gavitt Award as the Most Outstanding Player at the 2018 BIG EAST Tournament presented by Jeep. The redshirt junior forward explained the turnaroud like this: The whole thing was to defend. Coach was telling me to be aggressive and stay ready, play off your jump shot. My teammates found me open and I kept shooting. We don t run a lot of stuff for him, noted Villanova head coach Jay Wright last month. He just finds his way to get shots. Defensively he s tough. Mikal s just such a great all-around player that you want him involved in everything you do. Bridges was named a third team All-American by The Sporting News. He was also a first team All-BIG EAST selection. For the season the 6-7 wing player averages 18.0 points and 5.4 rebounds per contest. The Malvern native arrives in Boston with 1,254 career points in three seasons of active duty at VU (11.2 ppg). His 158 career steals rank 17th all-time at Villanova. With three more more he would tie his former teammate, Josh Hart (161). Bridges also is approaching the 500 career rebound plateau - he currently has 486 caroms. After Saturday s win, Wright recalled a time earlier in his career when Birdges might not have kept firing: He s a nice kid. He used to be too nice - where, OK, I m not making shots. I m not going to shoot anymore. I ll let everybody else do it. I will defend and rebound. We want him to continue to be aggressive.

3 Road Tested With the Finneran Pavilion undergoing a renovation due for completion ahead of , the Wildcats have grown used to being away from campus. VU was on a home court just 13 times in the regular sseason. It was 12-1 at home (.923); and 9-3 (.750) as a road team. On a neutral court in , including visits to Battle 4 Atlantis (3-0), the BIG EAST Tournament (3-0), and first weekend NCAA Tournament action at Pittsburgh s PPG Paints Arena (2-0), Villanova is 11-0 on neutral courts this season. Must See JB National Player of the Year candidate Jalen Brunson has been a guiding force as the Wildcats have earned 32 victories for the fourth consecutive season. Brunson enters the 2018 NCAA East Regional having been recognized for his efforts with a slew of honors. - National Player of the Year awards from The Sporting News, USA Today, NCAA.com and NBC Sports.com - Final ballot for the John R. Wooden Award presented by Wendy s (15 players, including teammate Mikal Bridges. Villanova is the only school with two players on the list). - A seminfinalist for the Citizen Naismith Naitonal Player of the Year award (10 candidates). - A finalist for the Bob Cousy Award, given annually to the nation s top point guard (five candidates). - A first Team All-American selection by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association and The Sporting News. The junior averages 19.1 points per game while connecting on.535 of his field goal attempts. The 6-3 guard is 79-of-188 from beyond the 3-point arc on the season (.420) and converts.803 of his free throw attempts. For the season he has 168 assists with just 62 turnovers. Brunson s 687 points this season are the most by a Wildcats player since Kerry Kittles tallied 706 in the season. His 168 assists are one shy of the 169 that former teammate Ryan Arcidiacono posted in and nine shy of the 177 by Alvin Williams in and Jonathan Haynes in The school record of 245 is held by Chris Ford ( ). Brunson also has 416 career assists. He is one of only six players in program history to register 1,500 or more points (1,598) and 400 or more career assists. (Kerry Kittles, Scottie Reynolds, Randy Foye, Corey Fisher and Ryan Arcidiacono). Academics Too Brunson has thrived in the class room as well as on the court. NEWS AND NOTES Last week he was selected as a second team COSIDA Academic All-American. He carries a 3.34 grade point average as a Communication major. Brunson is the first Wildcats men s basketball player to receive Academic All-american honors since Brunson was also tabbed the BIG EAST Scholar Athlete of the Year. From each school was part of the Eastern Eight before the Wildcats moved to the BIG EAST... West Virginia then joined the BIG EAST in 1995 before exiting for the Big 12 following the campaign... The BIG EAST series between the schools was tight, with VU holding a edge and the teams splitting their last four decisions. Math Matters In addition to the Associated Press and USA Today Coaches polls, Villanova has spent most of this season near the top of the Ken Pomeroy advanced metrics rankings at kenpom.com. After two rounds of the NCAA Tournament, VU stands at No. 1 overall (+32.20), having moved past the University of Virginia in the overall kenpom.com listings. Its Adjusted Offensive Efficiency of points per 100 possessions ranks first in the nation. The Cats Adjusted Defensive Efficiency of 95.4 points per 100 possessions ranks 19th nationally. This is the first time VU has been in the Top 20 on the defensive end of those metrics since December. D Tales Since absorbing an overtime loss at Creighton on Feb. 24, the Wildcats have enhanced their defensive portfolio. In the seven games since, VU s opponents are 173-of-403 from the field (.429). No VU for has converted better than 48 percent of its attempts from the field in this stretch (Butler,.481). The Wildcats have allowed 66.3 ppg in this 7-0 burst. Interestingly, all of those games have come with junior guard Phil Booth in the lineup. In the seven games Booth missed with a broken bone in his right (shooting) hand from Jan. 28- Feb. 17, the Wildcats allowed 77.9 ppg. In the 29 games Booth has played, VU has allowed 69.0 ppg. O Show After spending his first season at Villanova in sidelined in games as an academic redshirt, Cleveland native Omari Spellman has established himself as an important cornerstone of the Wildcas attack. Spellman was tabbed BIG EAST Freshman of the Week six times and was the league s Freshman of the Year He s started 35 times in 36 games and averaged 10.6 points per game along with 7.9 rebound per contest.

4 NEWS AND NOTES CG and DCR Spellman isn t the only Wildcats newbie to make an impact. First year players Collin Gillespie and Dhamir Cosby-Rountree provided critical minutes in the Wildcats First and Second Round NCAA wins. Gillespie scored just three points in the win over Alabama in the round of 32 but his first half defense against Crimson Tide standout Collin Sexton helped insure the Wildcats held a halftime lead. The Archbishop Wood product is averaging 6.0 ppg in the NCAA Tournament. Cosby-Roundtree provided 10 points and three rebounds in the win over Radford on March 15. The Philadelphia native averaged 7.0 points and 2.0 rebounds per game in Pittsburgh Plateau for Paschall Junior forward Eric Paschall - who spent his freshman year of at Fordham- scored his 1,000th collegiate point during a BIG EAST Tournament semifinal win over Butler. Paschall has averaged 8.7 ppg average in his two seasons on the court at Villanova. Combined with 430 points scored at Fordham, Paschall now has 1,036 points as a college player. Absence Slips The Wildcats have absorbed their share of injuries over the first three plus months of A full accounting is below: Freshman guard Collin Gillespie missed eight games over a period of five weeks after breaking a bone in his left (non-shooting) hand on Dec. 9. Classmate Jermaine Samuels suffered a similar injury in a win at DePaul on Dec. 27 and missed six weeks. Eric Paschall missed two February games due to a concussion. Phil Booth endured a seven game, four week absence after suffering a broken bone in his right (shooting) hand. Two For Tomorrow A pair of versatile and highly-regarded wing players have signed national letters of intent to enroll at Villanova in the fall of 2018, it was announced on Nov. 10. Brandon Slater, 6-6, of Fairfax, Va., and Cole Swider, 6-8, of Portsmouth, R.I. are set to become Wildcats next fall. As a junior in , Slater averaged 15.2 ppg at Paul VI High School, where he played both guard and forward. Slater, who played his summer basketball for Team Takeover, is ranked at No. 70 in ESPN s Top 100 Class of 2018 Prospects. Brandon is a high-character young man from an awesome family, stated Wright. I think he has tremendous potential to become an outstanding Villanova guard. Swider attends St. Andrews School and emerged as one of the nation s top prospects over the last two seasons. As a junior he averaged 26.5 points per game at St. Andrews while displaying exceptional skill from long distance. He was ranked at No. 35 in the ESPN list of Top 100 players in the class of The passion Cole has for the game fits our culture perfectly, Wright stated.
