NCAA RECORD and APPEARANCES DePauw: (14 appearances; second in national championship game/2007) Wisconsin-Whitewater: (13 appearances; first in national championship game) Following last night s NCAA Division III semifinal win over 15th-ranked Williams, the number-one ranked DePauw women s basketball team faces 26-6 Wisconsin-Whitewater in the 2013 national championship game. The Warhawks earned a spot in the title game following a overtime victory over Amherst last night. Mary Merg hit a buzzer-beating three to force the overtime and then she won the game with a jumper at the buzzer of the first extra session. DePauw earned automatic qualification into the 64-team field after winning the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament with a win over Kenyon on February 23. The Tigers are making their 10th straight appearance and 14th overall. DePauw won the national title in 2007, finished third in 2002 and were quarterfinalists in 2006 and The Tigers are in NCAA postseason play. Playing all four NCAA games at the Neal Fieldhouse, DePauw opened with a victory over La Roche and a win againt Maryville (Tenn.) in the second round. They then topped #21 Washington-St. Louis, 59-41, in the sectional semifinals and #17 Christopher Newport, 76-55, in the sectional final. Wisconsin-Whitewater earned an at-large spot in the tournament after falling to Wisconsin- Stevens Point in overtime at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament, The Warhawks are appearing in their 13th NCAA postseason with a all-time record and making their first appearance in the championship game. Like DePauw, the Warhawks were at home for all four tournament games leading up to the semifinals. They topped Wisconsin Lutheran (68-48) in the opening round and Carthage (71-51) in the second. In last weekend s sectional, the Warhawks bear Simpson (76-63) and Hope (65-60). Kris Huffman was the Coach of the Year for the second time in as many years in the NCAC and for the third straight year overall including in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference in In her 20 seasons, Huffman has earned conference coach of the year honors 11 times. Alex Gasaway was named D3hoops.com first team all-great Lakes Region and Kate Walker second team, while Kris Huffman was named the region s coach of the year for the first time. Ali Ross was a third team selection last year. The Tigers have not been outrebounded in all 33 games this year and 53 straight dating back to last season. During Kris Huffman s 20 seasons, DePauw teams have a record when outrebounding an opponent or when the rebounds are equal. The mark is when the opponent holds the rebounding edge. DePauw led the nation in rebound margin in both and , was second last year and entered the semifinal ranked third this year. The Tigers are 30-0 this season when leading at the half and during Huffman s tenure. In her 20 seasons, DePauw is when trailing at the intermission after last night s win. In the first halves of games this season, DePauw is holding opponents to just 19.3 points and 34.0 percent shooting from the field. Kate Walker hits 52.2 percent of her first-half field goal tries including 15-of-23 three-pointers. The Tigers also commit just 5.7 turnovers per first half. Ellie Pearson shoots 56.2 percent in the second half of games, while Alex Gasaway hits 55.5 percent. Savannah Trees has made 35-of-38 free throws in the final 20 minutes of games. Kate Walker has started 121 games and broke the previous mark of 119 starts by Emily Marshall ( ). Walker has played in and started every possible game at DePauw. DePauw has set a single-season school record with 209 three-point field goals made and 540 attempted. DePauw s 99 blocked shots this year broke the school mark of 92 set in The Tigers are on pace to set the school record for fewest points allowed per game. Currently, opponents are scoring just 45.4 points per game against DePauw and the record is 45.6 set last year. DePauw has held a school-record 25 opponents under 50 points and all 33 under 60 which also is a school mark. Ellie Pearson s 19 rebounds against La Roche and 18 versus Maryville are the two top performances in this year s tournament. Her 58 rebounds in this year s tournament lead Division III and are a DePauw record for a single NCAA Championship. DePauw s eight-point, first-half deficit last night was the largest the Tigers have faced this season. Last night also marked just the third time this season that DePauw trailed in the second half of a game this year. Overall, the Tigers have trailed just 93:68 out of the total 1,320 minutes this season. Ellie Pearson s 92 rebounds in her 10 NCAA postseason games are the most by any DePauw player in tournament play. Emily Marshall ( ) held the mark of 86. DePauw s five turnovers last night matched the season low that was previously established in the NCAA second-round win over Maryville (Tenn.). The Tigers, who entered the semifinals ranked third in Division III for fewest turnovers (12.3), have posted single-digit totals seven times this season. The only other time DePauw and Wisconsin- Whitewater met was in the 2008 sectional finals on the Warhawks home court. The Warhawks ended the Tigers season with an win and went on to finish third after losing to eventual national champion Howard Payne, 69-59, and topping DePauw s former Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Oglethorpe in the third-place game, Both DePauw and Wisconsin-Whitewater s seasons came to and end to Carthage at DePauw s Neal Fieldhouse. The Warhawks bowed out in the first round with the Tigers suffering a second-round defeat. The teams have two common opponents as DePauw won at Illinois Wesleyan (75-52) on November 25 with Wisconsin-Whitewater losing to them in Bloomington, 72-69, just two days later. The Tigers won at Wisconsin Lutheran, 61-39, on November 17 and the Warhawks topped them at home in the NCAA first round, Since the D3hoops.com rankings started in 1999, DePauw is against ranked teams and have won its last nine. DePauw s last loss to a ranked team came to Hope on March 4, 2011, by a score in the NCAA First Round in the DeVos Fieldhouse. 7 KRIS HUFFMAN Head Coach Kris Huffman is in her 20th season as DePauw s head women s basketball coach and is the program s winningest coach with a career record and a mark in conference games. Her.809 winning percentage (entering the season) was the best in DePauw history, ranked 16th among active coaches on all NCAA levels with at least five years experience and 18th alltime among coaches with at least 10 years experience. The percentage was eighth among Division III active coaches with at least five years experience and eighth all-time in the Division among coaches with 10 years experience. Since the beginning of the season, the Tigers have amassed a record for an.854 winning percentage which is tops among all NCAA institutions in Indiana and is second among the nation s Division III schools. This season she s led DePauw to its first undefeated regular season in school history at 28-0 and was named the North Coast Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for the second straight season after the Tigers captured the NCAC regular season title and the conference tournament championship. In , Huffman directed DePauw to a 27-2 overall record including a perfect 16-0 mark in its first year of North Coast Athletic Conference competition. The Tigers also won the NCAC tournament to earn the program s ninth straight trip to the NCAA Division III Championship and 13th in the last 17 years. DePauw advanced to the second round before losing to Carthage. The Tigers amassed the second-longest winning streak in school history at 26 games and Huffman was named the NCAC Coach of the Year. The season was also the 11th straight 20-win campaign and 15th in the last 16 seasons. Huffman led the Tigers to a 25-4 record including a 15-1 mark in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and an SCAC tournament championship. DePauw appeared in its eighth straight NCAA Division III Championship and 12th in the last 16 years, while posting its 10th straight 20-win season and 14th in the last 15 years. The conference championship was the Tigers 10th in 13 seasons. Huffman was named the SCAC s Co-Coach of the Year, marking the seventh time she s earned the distinction in that conference and ninth overall. She directed the Tigers to a 26-4 record, while the squad finished Huffman s Tigers finished with a 28-4 record, a third straight SCAC title and a third consecutive NCAA Division III quarterfinal appearance. She earned SCAC Coach of the Year honors for the third straight year and sixth time in 10 seasons. DePauw s appearance in the round of 16 was its sixth in the last 11 seasons and the quarterfinal trip the fourth in the last seven years. She led the Tigers to the University s first national athletic team championship as DePauw defeated Washington-St. Louis by a count at Springfield College on March 17, The championship capped a school-record 31-win campaign against just three losses and a seventh Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title in nine years. Huffman was named the national coach of the year by D3hoops.com and WDIII News and also earned her fifth SCAC Coach of the Year award. Huffman directed the Tigers to a, then, school-record 29 wins against just two losses and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals. Huffman was named the Women s Basketball Coaches Association District Coach of the Year for the fourth time and the Tigers won a school-record 28 straight. In , Huffman led the Tigers to the top seed in the SCAC Championship after finishing with the best regular season record in conference play. The Tigers finished second in the SCAC tournament and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship. They finished 23-6 after falling to Calvin in the second round. In , Huffman directed the Tigers to the SCAC title, a berth in the NCAA tournament and a school record-tying 26 wins. Huffman was named the SCAC Coach of the Year for the third time which also marked her fifth conference coach of the year honor overall. The 2002 Tigers finished third at the NCAA Division III Championship and Huffman was named the Division III Coach of the Year by both the WBCA and WDIII News. DePauw won a school-record 26 games that season and lost just four in capturing its sixth straight conference title. They also won a school-record 20 straight during the campaign. On their way to the national semifinals, the Tigers knocked off fourth-ranked Hardin-Simmons and second-ranked Wilmington on consecutive nights. Huffman was named the 2002 SCAC Coach of the Year and also earned WBCA District Coach of the Year honors for the second straight year and third time in four seasons. During the campaign she led the Tigers to a tri-scac championship, was the South Region Coach of the Year and a finalist for Division III Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons. The Tigers notched a fourth consecutive 20-win season and shared the SCAC title with Hendrix. They also extended their conference win streak to 43 games and set an SCAC record with 25 consecutive wins in that conference. In , their first season as members of the SCAC, the Tigers finished with a perfect 18-0 conference record and a third appearance in four years in the NCAA Division III Championship. The Tigers, seeded first in the South Region, won a second-round home game over Austin College before being eliminated in the round of 16 by eventual national runner-up St. Benedict. The 22-5 season also included a school-record 17-game win streak. Huffman earned SCAC Coach of the Year honors which was her third such conference award in her young career. She also was the South Region Coach of the Year and one of eight finalists for the Division III Coach of the Year award. During the season, Huffman led the Tigers to a then school-record 23 wins against just five losses and the program s second NCAA Division III Championship appearance in three years. The Tigers earned a number two seed in the Great Lakes Region and beat Baldwin-Wallace in a second-round home game before losing to St. Thomas in the round of 16. The Tigers also captured the regular season and tournament championships in the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference and were the first team to win all 10 conference games in a single season. For her efforts she earned her second ICAC Coach of the Year honor in three years. Huffman led the Tigers to a then school-record 22 wins against just four losses in as the Old Gold shared the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference title with Hanover. During the season, Huffman was named the ICAC Coach of the Year after directing the Tigers to a 19-7 record and the team s first appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament. In her first season in Greencastle, she led the Tigers to a finish and a tie for second place in the ICAC. A native of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Huffman was named Miss Basketball in Iowa following her senior year in high school when she led her team to a state championship. She then moved on to Division I Northern Iowa where she played basketball and earned a bachelor s degree in community health education. She still is the Panthers career three-point record holder with a.483 percentage, is third with an.817 career free throw percentage and recorded the only tripledouble in school history with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists against Eastern Illinois on January 31, Huffman finished as the second all-time leading scorer in school history with 1,294 points and still ranks sixth. Her 322 career assists still rank fifth. She remained at UNI and received a master s degree in health education. Huffman is also an Iowa Women s Basketball Hall of Fame inductee. Huffman served as an assistant coach at Wartburg College where she helped them to four straight appearances in the Division III tournament. In June 2008, Huffman served as a court coach for the 2008 USA Basketball Women s U18 National Team Trials in Colorado Springs, Colo. In December 2012 she was named the St. Vincent Health Silver Medal Award recipient and will be among 11 women inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame on April 27, The Silver Medal Award is presented each year to a living person based upon outstanding contributions to Indiana high school basketball in a capacity other than an Indiana high school basketball player or coach. Recipients of the Silver Medal are considered to be Hall of Fame inductees. Huffman is also an assistant director of athletics for compliance, a part-time instructor in the kinesiology department and a lifefit coordinator. She served on the Women s Basketball Coaches Association Board of Directors and the NCAA Division III Women s Basketball Regional Advisory Committee.
