Tiger Tipoff Following Friday s win over Lakeland in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Championship, #11 DePauw (26-3) takes on host #4 Hope College (28-1) in a second round contest on Saturday, March 6. Tipoff from DeVos Fieldhouse in Holland, Mich., is set for 7 p.m. The second-round winner advances to the round of 16 next Friday where they ll face the winner of the Medaille at Marymount game. Freshman guard Kate Walker scored a careerhigh 15 points and Emily Marshall grabbed 15 rebounds in the Tigers first-round victory. DePauw jumped out to a 16-2 lead in the opening 6:27 and never trailed. The Tigers are making their seventh straight NCAA appearance and 11th in 15 years with an alltime tournament record of DePauw enters the game on a 22-game win streak and earned automatic qualification by winning its ninth Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title in 12 years with Sunday s victory over Centre. Emily Marshall leads the Tigers with 9.5 points and 9.7 rebounds per game, while Jenna Fernandez and Katie Aldrich follow with 9.4 and 9.3 points, respectively. Walker is the team leader with 2.9 assists, while Brooke Osborne paces the team with 61 threepointers and Lauren Goff follows with 50. This marks the ninth straight time and 12th in the last 14 seasons the Tigers have won at least 22 games. They ve won at least 20 games in 13 of the last 14 seasons and at least 26 in six of the last nine. The Tigers entered the tournament as the nation s leader in rebound margin (+17.1), ranked sixth in fewest turnovers per game (14.0), sixth in scoring margin (+21.8), eighth in scoring defense (50.5), eighth in assist turnover ratio (1.02) and 11th in three-point percentage (36.5). The scoring defense is 3.4 points per game below the school record of 53.9 in Hope is 28-1 after last night s win over Denison. Carrie Snikkers led the Flying Dutch with 21 points and eight rebounds, while Philana Greene dished out six assists and recorded three steals. Snikkers leads Hope with 13.0 points and 7.1 rebounds per game and hits 50.5 percent from the floor. Greene follows with 8.6 points and leads with 3.6 assists and 3.4 steals. The Flying Dutch have won 19 straight after suffering a loss to Carthage in a tournament at Oglethorpe. That loss was the first of eight games which Snikkers missed due to injury. They earned automatic qualification into the NCAA Championship by winning the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association title with a win over Calvin last Saturday. 5 KRIS HUFFMAN Head Coach Kris Huffman is in her 17th season as DePauw s head women s basketball coach and is the program s winningest coach with a career record and a mark in conference games. Her.794 winning percentage is the best in DePauw history, ranks ninth all-time among Division III coaches with at least 10 years of Division III head coaching experience and 17th among coaches with at least 10 years of experience at any NCAA level. Since the beginning of the season, the Tigers have amassed a record for an.834 winning percentage which is tops among all NCAA institutions in Indiana and is fourth among the nation s Division III schools. Huffman led the Tigers to a 22-6 overall record, a sixth straight appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship and ninth in the last 13 seasons. The 20-plus win season was the Tigers eighth straight and 12th in the last 13 years. Huffman directed the Tigers to a 28-4 record, a third straight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title and a third consecutive NCAA Division III quarterfinal appearance. She earned SCAC Coach of the Year honors for the third straight year and sixth time in 10 seasons. DePauw s appearance in the round of 16 was its sixth in the last 11 seasons and the quarterfinal trip the fourth in the last seven years. She led the Tigers to the University s first national athletic team championship as DePauw defeated Washington-St. Louis by a count at Springfield College on March 17, The championship capped a school-record 31-win campaign against just three losses and a seventh Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference title in nine years. Huffman was named the national coach of the year by D3hoops.com and WDIII News and also earned her fifth SCAC Coach of the Year award. Huffman directed the Tigers to a, then, school-record 29 wins against just two losses and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals. Huffman was named the Women s Basketball Coaches Association District Coach of the Year for the fourth time and the Tigers won a school-record 28 straight. In , Huffman led the Tigers to the top seed in the SCAC Championship after finishing with the best regular season record in conference play. The Tigers finished second in the SCAC tournament and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship. They finished 23-6 after falling to Calvin in the second round. In , Huffman directed the Tigers to the SCAC title, a berth in the NCAA tournament and a school record-tying 26 wins. Huffman was named the SCAC Coach of the Year for the third time which also marked her fifth conference coach of the year honor overall. The 2002 Tigers finished third at the NCAA Division III Championship and Huffman was named the Division III Coach of the Year by both the WBCA and WDIII News. DePauw won a school-record 26 games that season and lost just four in capturing its sixth straight conference title. They also won a schoolrecord 20 straight during the campaign. On their way to the national semifinals, the Tigers knocked off fourth-ranked Hardin-Simmons and second-ranked Wilmington on consecutive nights. Huffman was named the 2002 SCAC Coach of the Year and also earned WBCA District Coach of the Year honors for the second straight year and third time in four seasons. During the campaign she led the Tigers to a tri-scac championship, was the South Region Coach of the Year and a finalist for Division III Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons. The Tigers notched a fourth consecutive 20-win season and shared the SCAC title with Hendrix. They also extended their conference win streak to 43 games and set an SCAC record with 25 consecutive wins in that conference. In , their first season as members of the SCAC, the Tigers finished with a perfect 18-0 conference record and a third appearance in four years in the NCAA Division III Championship. The Tigers, seeded first in the South Region, won a second-round home game over Austin College before being eliminated in the round of 16 by eventual national runner-up St. Benedict. The 22-5 season also included a school-record 17-game win streak. Huffman earned SCAC Coach of the Year honors which was her third such conference award in her young career. She also was the South Region Coach of the Year and one of eight finalists for the Division III Coach of the Year award. During the season, Huffman led the Tigers to a then school-record 23 wins against just five losses and the program s second NCAA Division III Championship appearance in three years. The Tigers earned a number two seed DePauw Women s Basketball Game Notes 5 in the Great Lakes Region and beat Baldwin-Wallace in a second-round home game before losing to St. Thomas in the round of 16. The Tigers also captured the regular season and tournament championships in the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference and were the first team to win all 10 conference games in a single season. For her efforts she earned her second ICAC Coach of the Year honor in three years. Huffman led the Tigers to a then school-record 22 wins against just four losses in as the Old Gold shared the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference title with Hanover. During the season, Huffman was named the ICAC Coach of the Year after directing the Tigers to a 19-7 record and the team s first appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament. In her first season in Greencastle, she led the Tigers to a finish and a tie for second place in the ICAC. A native of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Huffman was named Miss Basketball in Iowa following her senior year in high school when she led her team to a state championship. She then moved on to Division I Northern Iowa where she played basketball and earned a bachelor s degree in community health education. She still is the Panthers career three-point record holder with a.483 percentage, is third with an.817 career free throw percentage and recorded the only triple-double in school history with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists against Eastern Illinois on January 31, Huffman finished as the second all-time leading scorer in school history with 1,294 points and still ranks sixth. Her 322 career assists still rank fifth. She remained at UNI and received a master s degree in health education. Huffman is also an Iowa Women s Basketball Hall of Fame inductee. Huffman served as an assistant coach at Wartburg College where she helped them to four straight appearances in the Division III tournament. In June 2008, Huffman served as a court coach for the 2008 USA Basketball Women s U18 National Team Trials in Colorado Springs, Colo. Huffman is also a part-time instructor in the kinesiology department, a lifefit coordinator and the athletic department s compliance director. She served on the Women s Basketball Coaches Association Board of Directors and the NCAA Division III Women s Basketball Regional Advisory Committee. The Tigers 25 wins marks the sixth time in the last nine years they ve won at least 26. DePauw s seniors have posted a record which is second in wins in Division III in that time behind Hope s mark. The Tigers.870 winning percentage over the last four years is seventh in Division III. The Tigers finished the season with a 10-0 home record for their fourth straight unbeaten season at the Neal Fieldhouse. DePauw has won a school-record 49 straight at home with the last loss coming by a score to Hope on March 11, 2006, in the national quarterfinals. Kris Huffman is DePauw s all-time leader with 380 coaching wins and an.800 winning percentage. She notched her 350th victory in a win at Birmingham-Southern on February 6, In 17 seasons she s posted a record. When she started prior to the season, DePauw had compiled an all-time record of for a.377 winning percentage. Today the all-time record stands at for a.629 percentage. Senior forward Emily Marshall was a first team all-scac selection after earning third team honors last year. Senior forward Jenna Fernandez was a second team choice as she was in 2008 and sophomore forward Katie Aldrich earned third team distinction. Junior guard Katie Mathews was named the conference s Defensive Player of the Year marking the fourth time in the last five years a DePauw player has earned the honor. The Tigers have only been outrebounded in one game this season. DePauw s rebound margin of entering the tournament led Division III. 7 In DePauw s SCAC championship game win over Centre, Emily Marshall broke her own single-season rebounding record of 262 set last year. Marshall now has 280. She became DePauw s career rebounding leader in the January 3 win at Centre and has totaled 933 in her career. She s recorded 467 career offensive rebounds and 466 on the defensive glass. DePauw outscores the opposition in the first half of games this year with Brooke Osborne averaging 6.0 points over the opening 20 minutes of games and shooting 43.1 percent from three-point range. Of Osborne s 61 three-pointers, 47 have come in the first halves of games. DePauw enters the game on a 22-game win streak with the last loss coming on December 6 at Birmingham-Southern.
