IU is in a stretch where it will play 6-of-8 on the road from Jan. 6 to Feb.. Senior forward Juwan Morgan and freshman guard Romeo Langford were selected to the -member Preseason All-Big Ten team. Both are among 5 players listed as candidates for the 9 Naismith Trophy and Langford is among players on the NABC Player of the Year watch list and 5 players up for the Wooden Award. Langford was named third-team Preseason All-American by ESPN.com and CBSSports.com and earned fourth-team honors from WatchStadium.com. Morgan also is up for the 9 Senior CLASS Award. Langford is the top freshman scorer in the conference averaging 7.6 ppg. He had 8-point efforts against Illinois and Maryland earlier. He has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week 4 times. Morgan earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors and USBWA Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week accolades after his record-setting 35-point effort against Butler. He has scored,43 career points (4th alltime at IU) and is 4th in the BG in double-doubles with 7. In his last two games against the Wolverines, Morgan is averaging 4.5 points. Coach Archie Miller s squad is nd in the Big Ten, and 3th in the country, making 49.8% of its shots. Indiana has a 6- edge against the Wolverines in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall since the 9- season. The Wolverines won the last meeting here in 7, Zavier Simpson and Jon Teske were the only current Wolverines to play in theat game. In addition, the 39 field goals in that game topped last season s best of 33. The Hoosiers 3 steals against the Illini also were a program best under Miller. IU s 35 free throws attempted against Illinois were the most by a Miller team at IU. The Hoosiers 35 points allowed against Montana State topped last year s lowest total points allowed (43, at Rutgers). The 6 points allowed in the second half also matched last years fewest points allowed in a half (6, st half at Rutgers). IU s shooting tally of 64.8% against Jacksonville also is a best for his teams as a college coach. IU was a perfect 6 of 6 from the line at Maryland. Devonte Green MORGAN NAMED BIG TEN PLAYER OF THE WEEK AND USBWA NATIONAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK After leading IU to a 7-68 win over Butler in the Crossroads Classic, senior Juwan Morgan was named Big Ten Conference Player of the Week and the Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week by the United States Basketball Writers Association of America (USBWA) (December 7). He received similar honors a season ago after guiding IU to a win over Notre Dame in the same event. Morgan scored a career-high 35 points, breaking his career-high and tournament record from last year (34 points) in leading IU to a 7-68 comeback win over Butler in the Crossroads Classic. MORGAN S NUMBERS DON T LIE Senior Juwan Morgan joined an elite group of active collegiate players with a blocked shot against Central Arkansas on Dec. 9. He is one of ACTIVE players in the country to amass the following career totals (Morgan s totals):, career points (,43) 5 career rebounds (6) career assists (33) career blocked shots () Morgan had the second triple-double in program history (Steve Downing vs. Michigan, 97, 8-7- blocks) with points, boards and assists against Jacksonville. He is the Hoosiers first forward or center ever to notch assists in a game. JACKSON-DAVIS NAMED MCDONALD S AA IU signee Trayce Jackson-Davis, who plays at Center Grove High School, will be the 3st Hoosier recruit to play in the McDonald s All-American game. He is the second recruit of Archie Miller s tenure to earn the honor (Romeo Langford).

6 PLAYER NOTES Senior All-Big Ten forward Juwan Morgan is 4th in the Big Ten in double-doubles with 7. 7 THE COMEBACK TRAIL In its last 8 wins, the Hoosiers have overcome a deficit. IU trailed against UC Davis (4), Northwestern (5), Penn State (9), Louisville (8), Butler (), Central Arkansas and Jacksonville (5) and Illinois (). IU trailed Northwestern, 6-58, with 3:3 left in the game when senior Juwan Morgan went out due to a leg injury. He did not return and IU outscored the Wildcats, -5. She is the sister of men s basketball traansfer Evan Fitzner. Fitzner, a native of San Diego, Calif., is an AVCA First Team Under Armour All-American and represents the first AVCA First Team Under Armour All-American in Indiana volleyball program history. Fitzner played high school volleyball at Torrey Pines, one of the most successful programs in the history of the CIF-San Diego Section. HUNTER UNDERGOES SURGERY Indiana University men s basketball coach Archie Miller announced that freshman Jerome Hunter underwent surgery at the Cleveland Clinic to treat a lower body condition that first developed early in the semester. His is recovering from the procedure and has returned to campus. Hunter, who has not seen any game action, will redshirt. Due to HIPPA laws, the program is not allowed to comment on specifics of the condition. HOOSIERS MOURNING LOSS OF ERIC ANDERSON The Indiana University men s basketball program is saddened to learn of the passing of former Hoosier, Eric Anderson on December 9. He was 48. Anderson played for the Hoosiers from and earned a degree in sociology. He ranks th on IU s all-time scoring list with,75 career points and was a member of Big Ten Championship teams in 989 and 99 and earned Most Outstanding Player honors in the 99 NCAA West Regional where he helped lead the Hoosiers to the Final Four that season. He also earned 989 Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors after averaging.9 points and 6. rebounds. He earned firstteam All-Big Ten honors in 99 after averaging 3.7 points and 7. boards. LONGTIME IU BEAT WRITER TERRY HUTCHENS PASSES AWAY Longtime Indiana sportswriter Terry Hutchens died December afternoon from health complications caused by a stroke. Hutchens, 6, had been in critical condition at Community Hospital North since December 7. Hutchens had covered IU basketball and football, as well as other sports of statewide and national interest, since 6 for The Herald Bulletin and CNHI Sports Indiana, a collaborative effort of 3 Hoosier newspapers owned by CNHI. Hutchens was a graduate of the IU School of Journalism. He covered the Indianapolis Colts for the Fort Wayne News- Sentinel, then worked for the Indianapolis News and later the Indianapolis Star for a total of 7 years, covering IU basketball and football much of that time. A five-time recipient of the Indiana Sports Writer of the Year Award from the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association, Hutchens also wrote nine books about Indiana sports. Hutchens and his wife, Susan, have two adult sons. HOOSIERS MOURNING LOSS OF JIMMY RAYL Former two-time Indiana University All- American Jimmy Rayl, 77, passed away on Sunday. Rayl played for the Hoosiers from 96 to 963 and earned All-American honors and first-team All-Big Ten accolades in He was named team MVP in 96 and was inducted into the IU Athletics Hall of Fame in 99. The Kokomo native twice established an IU and then Big Ten record when he scored 56 points in a game in 96 against Minnesota and in 963 against Michigan State. His efforts rank 3rd all-time in Big Ten history. He ranks 3rd on the school s all-time scoring list with,4 points. He was a 959 graduate of Kokomo High School and was named Mr. Basketball following his senior year where he averaged more than 9 points per game. He earned the Trester Mental Attitude Award after leading Kokomo to the state championship game. A 989 inductee into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, he was drafted by the Cincinnati Royals in the 3rd round in 963. 10 ILLINOIS POST IU has won 7 straight games against Illinois in Bloomington. IU forced Illinois turnovers, scoring points of those miscues. It is the 4th time this season that an opponent committed or more miscues in a game. It is the first time that IU has forced turnovers or more in a league game since the Hoosiers forced at Iowa last February.IU recorded season best in steals (3), free throw attempts (35) and free throws (5).The Hoosiers forced six Illinois shot clock violations. That is a school record. Over the final 6:53 minutes of the first half, the Hoosiers out-scored Illinois, 7-7, to end the half tied at 3-3. Indiana held Illinois scoreless for the first 4:39 minutes of the second half, out-scoring the Illini, 8-, during that stretch. Freshman Romeo Langford led the Hoosiers with a career-high 8 points on 8-of-3 shooting from the floor. Langford also went -of-5 from the free throw line and added six rebounds and three assists. MICHIGAN POST IU trailed by as many as 9 and could get no closer than a 57-5 deficit with just under minutes to go in the game. The Hoosiers committed a season-low 7 turnovers. The Hoosiers held the Wolverines without a 3-point field goal in the second half (-7) as Michigan finished the game making 5.% from long distance. IU is holding opponents to 9.4% shooting from long distance in 6 games. Senior Juwan Morgan led the Hoosiers with 5 points and 8 rebounds. The Hoosiers opened the game with a 7-4 run and took their biggest lead of the game at 8-4 with 7:43 left in the first half. For the second straight game, Indiana registered just seven turnovers a season-low. The last time IU had back-to-back games of seven or less turnovers was Feb., 8 at Ohio State (7) and Feb. 3, 8 against Wisconsin (5). Freshman Romeo Langford matched his season-high with 8 points while also adding three assists and two rebounds. He was 3-of- 6 from long range to set a new season best for 3FG made. 24 ARCHIE MILLER Second Year at Indiana Eighth Year as College Head Coach Career Record: Overall 8-4 Conference Record at Indiana: 8- Overall -4 Big Ten Named the 9th head coach of the Indiana Men s Basketball program on March 5, 7, by Indiana University Vice President and Director of Athletics Fred Glass.Care He won his 5th game as a head coach, January 4, 8, when the Hoosiers beat Northwestern, Miller saw the Hoosiers improve dramatically during the season. After seeing IU allow 76 points per game on 45.9 percent shooting and 4.7 percent accuracy from 3-point range in the month of November, IU limited teams to 65.4 points on 4.3 percent shooting from the floor and 33. percent from long distance in the month of February. IU posted a two-win improvement in the Big Ten from 6-7 to 7-8. He saw junior forward Juwan Morgan emerge as the most improved player in the Big Ten adding more than points per game scoring in Big Ten play during the 7-8 season. Morgan earned secondteam All-Big Ten honors and was named All-District by the USBWA and NABC in 8. Senior Rob Johnson averaged a career-best 4. points per game earned honorable mention All-Big-Ten honors his senior year. Regarded as one of the top young coaches in the country, Miller is a tireless recruiter, noted developer of talent, and a gifted tactician whose teams are known for their stout defense and efficient offense. His 8 recruiting class at IU was ranked 7th in the nation after a successful haul of players from the Big Ten footprint. Joining IU in 8 will be Indiana Mr. Basketball and McDonald s All-American guard Romeo Langford from New Albany, point guard Rob Phinisse from Lafayette and wing Damezi Anderson from South Bend. In addition, Ohio native and forward Jerome Hunter and Pennsylvania native and forward Jake Forrester, make up his first full recruiting class. The 4-year old native of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, came to IU after serving six seasons as head coach at the University of Dayton, where he won Atlantic Conference regular season championships in 6 and 7. He guided the Flyers to a record (69.8) and a mark (66.7) in the Atlantic. He took Dayton to the NCAA Tournament each of the last four years with the Flyers advancing to the Elite Eight in the 4 Tournament. UD was nationally ranked in three of Miller s six seasons (3-4, 4-5 and 5-6). During their elite eight run, UD topped Ohio State (6-59), Syracuse (55-53) and Stanford (8-7) before falling to Florida (6-5) in the regional finals. In 5, they defeated Boise State (56-55) and Providence (66-53) and were eliminated by Oklahoma (7-66) in the Sweet Sixteen. In 6, they were defeated by Final Four participant Syracuse (7-5) in the second round and by Wichita State (64-58) in their first tournament game this season. Miller is one of five active coaches who had at least five NCAA wins in his first four seasons. The others are Mark Few, Thad Matta, Shaka Smart and Roy Williams. With three NCAA wins in 4 and another two in 5, Dayton was one of just six teams to have at least five NCAA tournament wins in those two years. The others were Arizona, UConn, Kentucky, Michigan State and Wisconsin. For his efforts during the 6-7 season, he was named Atlantic and NABC District Coach of the Year. He led UD to perform at a championship level despite playing a 6-7 campaign where the team s top six scorers missed a total of 3 games during the year due to injury. He also was a finalist for the 5 Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year Award. He comes from a family of coaches with his father, John, having guided Archie and his brother Sean at Blackhawk High School in Beaver Falls. His brother Sean has been the head coach at the University of Arizona and also was the head coach at Xavier University. John was one of the country s top high school coaches when he retired in 5, with 657 wins in a 35- year coaching career. Archie, Sean and their sister Lisa all played Division I college basketball. Miller is regarded as a top recruiter Arizona s recruits were a Top class and game strategist he was the architect of the Wildcats upset of eighthranked Texas to get them to the Sweet 6. He was reunited with his brother during the summer of 5 on the coaching staff of USA Basketball s U9 World Championship. When Sean was elevated to the team s head coach, he turned to his brother to help USA basketball win the gold at the 5 FIBA U9 World Championship that was held June 7-July 5 in Heraklion, Crete, Greece. He was a four-year letterwinner at North Carolina State from A point guard, he is currently third at NC State in career FT% (.846, 65-95), sixth in career 3-pt. FG% (.49, 8-59), and fourth in career threes (8). As a senior, he helped lead the Wolfpack to the finals of the ACC championship game and was named to the all-tournament team. That season was coach Herb Sendek s first NCAA team at NC State. As an assistant, Miller coached in the Big Ten, Pac- and ACC, where he honed his craft under some of the most respected coaches in the country. He began his coaching career at NC State, serving as a coaching intern under Sendek in - 3. Miller then went to Western Kentucky as a full-time member of Darrin Horn s staff for one season. He returned to NC State, first as Director of Basketball Operations (4-5), and then as a fulltime assistant coach (5-6). When Sendek went to Arizona State in 6-7, Miller remained on his coaching staff before joining Thad Matta at Ohio State for two seasons (7-9). As a coach, he has been part of -plus win and NCAA seasons at NC State (5-6), Ohio State (8-9), Arizona (-), and Dayton (3-4, 4-5, 5-6 and 6-7). In April, 5, he joined his father and brother in the Beaver County Sports Hall of Fame.
