The Hoosiers will visit Arkansas in each team s second game of the Hardwood Showcase. Both teams are 1- in the multi-team event. The Hoosiers have an 8-35 win over Montana State, while Arkansas defeated UC Davis, Texas-Arlington also is in the event. The Razorbacks will visit Assembly Hall next season. IU is coming off a win over #24 Marquette in the Gavitt Games. The two teams last met in the 28 NCAA Tournament in Raleigh, NC., where Arkansas won the first round matchup IU won the first meeting in Bloomington in 1949, THE COACHES Indiana Coach Archie Miller begins his second season of guiding the Cream and Crimson. Last year, the Hoosiers finished and 9-9 in the Big Ten. He is in seven- plus years as a head coach, which includes six years at the University of Dayton. His Flyer teams made NCAA Tournament appearances in each of his last four seasons, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 214. Indiana Associate Head Coach Tom Ostrom was an assistant coach for the Razorbacks from Arkansas is led by Mike Anderson. He is in his eighth season in Fayetteville and has a record and led them to the NCAA Tournament last season. NEWS & NOTES IU s recruiting class is ranked seventh in the country heading into the season. Senior forward Juwan Morgan and freshman guard Romeo Langford were selected to the 1-member Preseason All-Big Ten team. Both are among 5 players listed as candidates for the 219 Naismith Trophy and Wooden Award and Langford is among 2 players on the NABC Player of the Year watch list. Morgan also is on the Karl Malone Watch List which is awarded to the top power forward in the country, and Langford is on the Jerry West Watch List presented annually to college basketball s top shooting guard. Langford was named third-team Preseason All- American by ESPN.com and CBSSports.com and earned fourth-team honors from WatchStadium.com. DEFENSE FUELING OFFENSE EARLY IN THE SEASON FOR IU Coach Archie Miller s squad has been impressive defensively in three regular season games, an exhibition game and a closed scrimmage. IU is holding opponents to 33.3% from the field, 18.6% from three-point range and have allowed just 54.3 points per game. In addition, it is forcing 19.7 turnovers per game. IU is averaging 22.6 points off of turnovers and allowing just 12. per game. The Hoosiers are also averaging 21. points per game on the fast break, while their transition defense is holding opponents to 6. fast break points per game. The Hoosiers have been a force inside outscoring its opponents in the paint. IU s 63.6% shooting effort against Marquette was the best ever performance for an Archie Miller coached team in his eight seasons as a head coach. His team s previous best came when Dayton beat George Mason and shot 62.9% in 216.

Its other win in the event came against Creighton in 215. The Hoosiers now leads the series with Marquette, 8-2. Head coach Archie Miller beat the second ranked team of his IU tenure, the previous being an 8-77 OT win over No. 18 Notre Dame on Dec. 16, 217. It is Indiana s first ranked win at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall since knocking off No. 3 North Carolina on Nov. 3, 216. The 63.6 percent shooting is the most for IU in the Archie Miller era. The previous high was 59.1 percent against Illinois on Feb. 14, 218. Indiana had five players in double figures (Langford, Durham, Phinisee, Morgan, Fitzner) for the first time since Feb. 14, 218 against Illinois. After trailing 2- to open the game, the Hoosiers responded with 19-2 run lasting 4:31. On the run, Durham led the way with seven points and two rebounds. When IU took the 4-2 lead, it held it for the remaining 38:42 of the game. The 23-point victory is the largest margin of victory over a ranked team since Indiana beat No. 13 North Carolina by 24 points on Nov. 27, 212. Freshman guard Romeo Langford led the Hoosiers in scoring with a season-high 22 points and eight field goals made. The New Albany native added a season-high five rebounds, three steals, and two blocks. Redshirt senior forward Evan Fitzner scored 16 points shooting 6-for-7 and tied his career high with four three pointers made. Freshman guard Rob Phinisee shot 5-for-7 from the field on his way to tying his seasonhigh with 12 points and a team-high eight assists. Junior forward De Ron Davis played 15 minutes, scored seven points, and went 5-for- 6 from the free throw line. Sophomore forward Justin Smith potted eight points and pulled in six rebounds. Senior forward Juwan Morgan grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and scored 13 points. Sophomore guard Aljami Durham made his 1th career start (first of the season) and scored 13 points while tying his career-high with five assists. Durham also four rebounds. Freshman forward Damezi Anderson had three points and two rebounds.

The team scored a season-high 87 points three times last year. In addition, the 39 field goals in that game topped last season s best of 33. The Hoosiers 12 steals versus the Cougars matched their best effort against Youngstown State a year ago. IU s 33 free throws attempted in the opener tied last year s standard established against Indiana State. The Hoosiers 35 points allowed against Montana State topped last year s lowest total points allowed (43, at Rutgers). The 16 points allowed in the second half also matched last years fewest points allowed in a half (16, 1st half at Rutgers). IU s shooting tally of 63.6% against Marquette also is a best for his teams while at Indiana. BENCH PROVIDING CONTRIBUTIONS The Hoosiers are averaging 35.6 points per game off the bench. The 51 points off the bench against Chicago State eclipsed last year s season-high of 39 against Howard. Junior Devonte Green had 15 and senior Evan Fitzner added 14 as reserves. Fitzner had 16 off the bench against Marquette. Since the season, IU had only scored 5 points off the bench twice before. Against Marquette, IU shot 45.% from three-point range making 9-of-2 from beyond the arc. Graduate transfer Evan Fitzner led the way by making all four of his long-distance attempts. From the free throw line, IU shot 73.9% and was led by junior DeRon Davis. The Colorado native was a 75.5% shooter from the line as a freshman but dropped to 5.% as a sophomore. After hitting 2 of 5 from the line to start the season, he hit 5 of 6 against the Golden Eagles. IMPRESSIVE DEFENSIVE IMPACT Coming into the game, Marquette All- American Markus Howard was averaging 26.5 points per game, including a 37 point effort against Bethune Cookman. Hoosier guards Rob Phinisee and Aljami Durham deserve a great deal of credit for never allowing Howard to become comfortable. they held Howard to just 7 first half points and forced 3 early turnovers as IU jumped out to a 19-4 lead. Howard finished with 18 points, but made just 1 of 5 three-point FG attempts. HUNTER UNDERGOES SURGERY Indiana University men s basketball coach Archie Miller announced that freshman Jerome Hunter underwent surgery Wednesday evening at the Cleveland Clinic to treat a lower body condition that first developed early in the semester. His is recovering from the procedure and hopes to return to campus next week. Hunter, who has not seen any game action, will remain out indefinitely. Due to HIPPA laws, the program is not allowed to comment on specifics of the condition.

4 PLAYER NOTES Senior All-Big Ten forward Juwan Morgan averaged 16.5 points last season and needs 134 points to become the 52nd player in school history to join the 1, point club. His 56.8% field goal percentage is ranked 4th all-time in school history. He had his 1th career doubledouble effort with 14 points and 11 rebounds against Montana State. Senior guard Zach McRoberts has started 22 career games at IU, including 17 last season. He shot a teambest 39.4% from three-point range. Including his first year at Vermont, he is a career 39.1% shooter from long distance. He is shooting 4.4% from long range during his career at IU. He is in graduate school in the Kelley School of Business studying Business Analytics. Morgan and McRoberts will serve as team captains this season. Junior center De Ron Davis will look to come back from a torn Achilles heel which caused him to miss the last 16 games of the season. He was averaging 9.6 points and 4.3 rebounds at the time of his injury and was shooting a Big Ten best 61.5% from the field when he got hurt. He has started 19 career games, including all 15 he played in last season. This year he has averaged 13. minutes per game and is averaging 6.3 points and 2.7 rebounds, while shooting 66.7% from the floor. Junior guard Devonte Green also has started 15 career games. He averaged 7.6 points and 2.5 assists last season. In his two-plus seasons with the Hoosiers, he has made 37.3% of his three-point field goal attempts. The Hoosiers were 5-1 in games last year when he shot 5% or better from the field. He helped the IU bench to a historic 51-point effort against Chicago State when he chipped in 15 points off the bench. Sophomore forward Justin Smith started nine games and led the IU freshman class averaging 6.5 points. He shot 55.% from the field. In the last six games of the season, he shot 61.2% from the field making 3 of his last 49 field goal attempts. He averaged 12.2 points in those games. He is averaging 11.3 points and shooting 68.4% from the floor. Sophomore guard Aljami Durham started nine games and averaged 4.8 points. He averaged 18.8 minutes of playing time. He made all 1 of his free throws against Rutgers in the Big Ten Tournament had 39 assists on the season. He is averaging 9. ppg. Sophomore Clifton Moore contributed six blocked shots in 43 minutes of action last season and has set career-highs in rebounding in each of his first two games of the season. Redshirt juniors Johnny Jager and Quentin Taylor return to the team as non-scholarship players. Redshirt sophomore Vijay Blackmon is another walk-on who is eligible to play after sitting out last season. He had five points against Chicago State. Redshirt freshman forward Race Thompson skipped his senior year of high school and spent last season as a redshirt for the Hoosiers. He was the 71st ranked recruit in the country at Armstrong High School in Plymouth, Minnesota after averaging 19.6 points and 8.9 rebounds during his junior season. He benefits from having a full year in Coach Archie Miller s system and has added 1 pounds of muscle to his frame. After missing most of the preseason with a groin injury, he scored his first career basket against Montana State. Graduate transfer Evan Fitzner joins the squad after playing three seasons at St. Mary s in California. The big man has a career shooting percentage of 41.4% from three-point range and averaged 42 triples per season. He averaged 6.4 points and 3.7 rebounds and is taking graduate courses in the school of public health. He had 14 points against Chicago State and had 16 points against Marquette hitting all 4 of 3FG. THE FIVE INCOMING FRESHMAN SCORED A COMBINED 9,941 POINTS DURING THEIR HIGH SCHOOL CAREERS. Freshman guard Romeo Langford, a Preseason All-American, was a McDonald s All-American and is the 27th Mr. Basketball in Indiana to suit up for the Hoosiers. He scored 3,2 points in his career at New Albany High School, including 35.5 points per game as a senior. He was rated the fifth best recruit in the country by 247 and ESPN. He scored 17 of his game-high 19 points against Chicago State in the first half. He had 22 points against Marquette and is shooting 57.1% from the floor. First-team All-State selection he scored 1,314 points in his career and averaged 2.2 points and 1.2 rebounds. He was the Ohio Central District Co-Player of the Year. He has not played yet due to a leg injury. Freshman forward Damezi Anderson was the 92nd ranked player in the country. The South Bend native set a St. Joseph County and South Bend record by scoring 2,21 points. He was an All-State pick after averaging 19.1 points as a senior. He is the first South Bend scholarship recruit since IU Hall of Famer Tom Abernethy came to Bloomington in the fall of He is averaging 4. points and 3. rebounds off the bench. Freshman guard Rob Phinisee played at McCutcheon in Lafayette and was the 99th ranked recruit in the country. He scored 2,23 points in his career for the Mavericks and earned multiple All-State accolades. As a senior, he averaged 29.4 points, 6.8 rebounds, 5.8 assists, and 3.7 steals. He is the first Lafayette native to earn a scholarship from IU since Played for the same AAU program (Indiana Elite) that produced Jordan Hulls, Cody Zeller and Yogi Ferrell. Phinisee has started all 3 games. He had 12 points and 8 assists with just 1 turnover against Marquette. Freshman forward Jake Forrester hails from Westtown High School in Pennsylvania and was the 127th ranked recruit in the Class of 218. He scored 1,392 career points and helped his team to a state title as a junior. Will get a chance to play against his former prep teammate Cam Reddish when the Hoosiers visit Duke for the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. He played for the same AAU program (PSA Cardinals) as former Hoosier and current Washington Wizard Thomas Bryant. Forrester had 4 points and 4 boards against Chicago State. Defensively, IU held its opponent to 32.% shooting from the field and 22.2% from long distance. IU shot 48.2%, including 53.8% in the second half. IU won the battle of the boards, and had 11 steals. Morgan led the way with 13 points and 16 rebounds and 3 assists. This is the first time since James Blackmon Jr. and Robert Johnson in the season that two freshmen have been in the opening night starting lineup. With one made free throw by Chicago State, the Hoosiers went on a 15-1 run that lasted 2:29 to make the score 53-26, putting the game away late in the first half. This was the second time in three years that the Hoosiers have scored 1 points or more in the season opener. Last time was against Kansas in 216, when the Hoosiers defeated the Jayhawk, in overtime in Hawaii. The Indiana bench made their contribution to the victory on Tuesday night with 51 points. MONTANA STATE POST GAME NOTES Indiana allowed 35 points, its fewest allowed in a game since allowing 29 to Notre Dame on Dec. 18, IU improved to 3- all-time against the Montana State Bobcats. The Hoosiers held the Bobcats to shooting 25 percent from the field, the lowest mark for an opposing team since Rutgers shot 24.1 percent on Feb. 5, 218. Montana State shot 12 percent from three-point range, the lowest IU has allowed since Youngstown State shot 8 percent on Dec. 29, 217. 13 ARCHIE MILLER Second Year at Indiana Eighth Year as College Head Coach Career Record: Overall Conference Record at Indiana: Overall 9-9 Big Ten Named the 29th head coach of the Indiana Men s Basketball program on March 25, 217, by Indiana University Vice President and Director of Athletics Fred Glass.Care He won his 15th game as a head coach, January 14, 218, when the Hoosiers beat Northwestern, Miller saw the Hoosiers improve dramatically during the season. After seeing IU allow 76 points per game on 45.9 percent shooting and 41.7 percent accuracy from 3-point range in the month of November, IU limited teams to 65.4 points on 41.3 percent shooting from the floor and 33.1 percent from long distance in the month of February. IU posted a two-win improvement in the Big Ten from to He saw junior forward Juwan Morgan emerge as the most improved player in the Big Ten adding more than 1 points per game scoring in Big Ten play during the season. Morgan earned secondteam All-Big Ten honors and was named All-District by the USBWA and NABC in 218. Senior Rob Johnson averaged a career-best 14. points per game earned honorable mention All-Big-Ten honors his senior year. Regarded as one of the top young coaches in the country, Miller is a tireless recruiter, noted developer of talent, and a gifted tactician whose teams are known for their stout defense and efficient offense. His 218 recruiting class at IU was ranked 7th in the nation after a successful haul of players from the Big Ten footprint. Joining IU in 218 will be Indiana Mr. Basketball and McDonald s All-American guard Romeo Langford from New Albany, point guard Rob Phinisse from Lafayette and wing Damezi Anderson from South Bend. In addition, Ohio native and forward Jerome Hunter and Pennsylvania native and forward Jake Forrester, make up his first full recruiting class. The 4-year old native of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, came to IU after serving six seasons as head coach at the University of Dayton, where he won Atlantic 1 Conference regular season championships in 216 and 217. He guided the Flyers to a record (69.8) and a mark (66.7) in the Atlantic 1. He took Dayton to the NCAA Tournament each of the last four years with the Flyers advancing to the Elite Eight in the 214 Tournament. UD was nationally ranked in three of Miller s six seasons (213-14, and ). During their elite eight run, UD topped Ohio State (6-59), Syracuse (55-53) and Stanford (82-72) before falling to Florida (62-52) in the regional finals. In 215, they defeated Boise State (56-55) and Providence (66-53) and were eliminated by Oklahoma (72-66) in the Sweet Sixteen. In 216, they were defeated by Final Four participant Syracuse (7-51) in the second round and by Wichita State (64-58) in their first tournament game this season. Miller is one of five active coaches who had at least five NCAA wins in his first four seasons. The others are Mark Few, Thad Matta, Shaka Smart and Roy Williams. With three NCAA wins in 214 and another two in 215, Dayton was one of just six teams to have at least five NCAA tournament wins in those two years. The others were Arizona, UConn, Kentucky, Michigan State and Wisconsin. For his efforts during the season, he was named Atlantic 1 and NABC District Coach of the Year. He led UD to perform at a championship level despite playing a campaign where the team s top six scorers missed a total of 32 games during the year due to injury. He also was a finalist for the 215 Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year Award. He comes from a family of coaches with his father, John, having guided Archie and his brother Sean at Blackhawk High School in Beaver Falls. His brother Sean has been the head coach at the University of Arizona and also was the head coach at Xavier University. John was one of the country s top high school coaches when he retired in 25, with 657 wins in a 35- year coaching career. Archie, Sean and their sister Lisa all played Division I college basketball. Miller is regarded as a top recruiter Arizona s 211 recruits were a Top 1 class and game strategist he was the architect of the Wildcats upset of eighthranked Texas to get them to the Sweet 16. He was reunited with his brother during the summer of 215 on the coaching staff of USA Basketball s U19 World Championship. When Sean was elevated to the team s head coach, he turned to his brother to help USA basketball win the gold at the 215 FIBA U19 World Championship that was held June 27-July 5 in Heraklion, Crete, Greece. He was a four-year letterwinner at North Carolina State from A point guard, he is currently third at NC State in career FT% (.846, ), sixth in career 3-pt. FG% (.429, ), and fourth in career threes (218). As a senior, he helped lead the Wolfpack to the finals of the ACC championship game and was named to the all-tournament team. That season was coach Herb Sendek s first NCAA team at NC State. As an assistant, Miller coached in the Big Ten, Pac-12 and ACC, where he honed his craft under some of the most respected coaches in the country. He began his coaching career at NC State, serving as a coaching intern under Sendek in Miller then went to Western Kentucky as a full-time member of Darrin Horn s staff for one season. He returned to NC State, first as Director of Basketball Operations (24-5), and then as a fulltime assistant coach (25-6). When Sendek went to Arizona State in 26-7, Miller remained on his coaching staff before joining Thad Matta at Ohio State for two seasons (27-9). As a coach, he has been part of 2-plus win and NCAA seasons at NC State (25-6), Ohio State (28-9), Arizona (21-11), and Dayton (213-14, , and ). In April, 215, he joined his father and brother in the Beaver County Sports Hall of Fame.
