The Buccaneers quickly jumped out to a 7-0 advantage after Terrell Brown drained a three-pointer and Isaac Jones and Trent Drafts scored inside layups. The Colonials slowly chipped away at their deficit, closing to within two, 8-6, after a pair of free throws from Coleman. Robert Morris would grab its first lead of the game, 9-8, thanks to a three-pointer from A.J. Jackson, but CSU came right back to take and 11-9 lead with 14:29 to go in the first half after a trifecta from Brown. RMU then rolled off a run over the next 10 and-a-half minutes to take its largest lead of the game, 42-21, with 3:56 to play before halftime. The Colonials received balanced scoring during the spurt, as Coleman and Tony Lee each scored eight points, while Jackson added seven. Charleston Southern clawed back into the game with a 13-3 run to close its deficit to 11 at halftime, In the second half Coleman became a key offensive force for Robert Morris. After CSU cut RMU s lead to with 17:43 to go, Coleman hit a three-pointer to push the Colonials to a advantage. The lead remained in double digits for Robert Morris until Donnell Covington s layup with 13:34 to go pulled the Buccaneers within eight, Coleman, however, hit another trifecta on RMU s next possession to push the Colonial lead to 65-54, which started Robert Morris on an 8-0 run. Jackson would score an old-fashioned three-point play for RMU, while Lee hit a fastbreak layup. The lead was never in jeopardy again for the Colonials, as Charleston Southern could get within only 10 points on five different occasions the rest of the game. Coleman is coming off back-to-back games in which he set a career high for points, starting with a 26-point performance in a Quinnipiac (12/10/05). He followed that up with a 31-point performance in a win over Charleston Southern (12/17/05) that helped him earn the Northeast Conference Choice Hotels Player of the Week award (12/19/05). Over his last three games, Coleman is shooting an even 50 percent (19-for-38) from the field, including a blistering 63.6 percent (14-for-22) from beyond the arc. More For Your Money - While junior guard Derek Coleman has upped his offensive production in recent games, that hasn t stopped him from doing what he does best: creating offensive opportunities for his teammates. So far on the campaign, Coleman has dished out 42 assists against 21 turnovers, a two-to-one assist-to-turnover ratio that continues a trend from the campaign. Over his last 32 games dating back to last season, Coleman owns 132 assists (4.13 per game) against 60 turnovers. In all on the campaign, Coleman ranks second in the Northeast Conference in assists (5.25 per game), third in assist-to-turnover ratio, fourth in three-point field goals made (2.62 per game) and three-point field goal percentage (46.7), ninth in free-throw percentage (81.5) and 11th in scoring (13.1 ppg). Breakout - Thanks to junior guard Derek Coleman s offensive exploits, Robert Morris broke out of its early-season shooting woes in its last two games. After failing to shoot 40 percent from the field in five of their first six games of the campaign, the Colonials have converted 47.9 percent (57-for-119) of their field goal opportunities in victories over Quinnipiac (12/10/05) and Charleston Southern (12/17/05), including a season-high 48.4 percent (30-for-62) against the Buccaneers. Three Ball, Side Pocket - Despite the loss of the program s top two three-point threats in each of the last two seasons in former forward Aaron Thomas (school record 218 trifectas from ) and former guard Maurice Carter (217 three-pointers from ), Robert Morris hasn t skipped a beat in its ability to score from long range. The Colonials enter Thursday s Iowa leading the Northeast Conference in three-point field goals per game (8.50) and have converted 33 of their last 69 opportunities in the last three games, a success rate of 47.8 percent. That s a direct opposite from the three games prior to its recent surge, as RMU hit just 17 of its previous 63 opportunities (27.0 percent) in victories over Lock Haven (11/26/05) and Maine (11/28/05) Duquesne (12/3/05). Round Mound of Rebound - Junior forward A.J. Jackson has been as consistent a contributor for Robert Morris in the early portion of his Colonial career, as he enters Thursday s Iowa as one of just two Northeast Conference players averaging a double-double, as he scores at a 16.0 points per game clip while pulling down a leaguebest average of 10.9 caroms a contest. With his third double-double in four New Hampshire (12/6/05), Jackson became the first Colonial in recorded history to have four straight double-digit rebound games. Over the last six contests, Jackson is averaging 11.8 rebounds a game. Jackson is looking to become just the second Robert Morris player in school history to average over 10 rebounds a game in a season. Former Colonial Earl Curleton ( ), who played when Robert Morris was both a junior college and a Division I institution, is the only player in school history to average over 10 rebounds a contest in a season (10.4 per game). Surf Board - By averaging 10.9 rebounds a game, junior forward A.J. Jackson is one of just 31 Division I players pulling down at least 10 caroms a contest. Jackson enters this week s play ranked tied for 10th in the latest NCAA rankings for his rebound average and is tied with Glen Davis of Louisiana State, Aaron Gray of Pittsburgh and Corey Rouse of East Carolina. Davis, Gray and Rouse have each grabbed 87 rebounds in eight games for their respective 10.9 per game averages, while Jackson has grabbed 76 boards in seven games. Entering this week s play as the leader is Rashad Jones-Jennings of Arkansas-Little Rock, who has posted 101 rebounds in eight games, an average of 12.6 rebounds a tilt.

6 Colonial Basketball Game Notes #25 Iowa - 12/22/05) - Page 6 Balancing Act - Despite the loss of three of the program s top eight alltime scorers in each of the last two seasons, Robert Morris hasn t struggled in finding players to step up and take the place of former All-NEC performers Chaz McCrommon and Maurice Carter, as well as former forward Aaron Thomas. Through the first eight games of the season, each of RMU s five starters in forwards A.J. Jackson and Cori Boston and guards Derek Coleman, Tony Lee and Jeremy Chappell, are averaging at least 10.0 points per game. Jackson leads the way with a 16.0 points per game average, while Boston ranks fifth on the club by scoring at a 10.0 points per game clip. In fact, all of the other league schools have at most three players in the top 30 in scoring, while RMU has five. In its 30-year Division I history, the most players the Colonials have had finish with a scoring average of 10.0 points per game or higher was four, coming during the and seasons. Hi-Five - With all five of RMU s starters averaging in double figures, the Colonials are looking to become the first Northeast Conference team to have five players finish with a double-figure scoring average since St. Francis (N.Y.) and Quinnipiac in The Chappell Show - Freshman guard Jeremy Chappell, just the fourth Colonial in school history to start his first Division I game, has claimed each of the last two Northeast Conference Choice Hotels Rookie of the Week honors after coming through with all-around performances. In a victory over Quinnipiac (12/10/05) in the club s league lidlifter, Chappell scored 16 of his career-high 20 points in the last 12 minutes of the game and also added five rebounds, five assists and four steals to help him garner his first weekly accolade. A week later in RMU s win over Charleston Southern (12/17/05), Chappell scored 14 points, grabbed four rebounds, added four assists and tied a Charles L. Sewall Center record for blocks by a Colonial with five to garner his second straight weekly honor. Chappell currently leads all NEC freshmen in four categories: scoring (11.6 ppg), rebounding (4.6 rpg), steals (1.4 per game) and blocks (1.1 per game). In his last six games, Chappell is averaging 12.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists per contest. Consistent Cori - Sophomore forward Cori Boston went through an up-and-down season as a freshman in , not only serving as the understudy to two-time All-Northeast Conference First Team selection Chaz McCrommon but battling various injuries throughout the year. Boston has been a pleasant surprise for Robert Morris in the early portion of the season. On the season Boston is averaging 10.0 points and 3.8 caroms a contest and has scored in double figures in five of RMU s eight games, including a career-high 16 St. Bonaventure (11/18/05). Steal City - As well as bringing a more intense nature in the rebounding department this season, Robert Morris has also immensely improved in the amount of pressure it supplies on its opponents. RMU began to show its defensive prowess last year with the addition of guard Tony Lee, who ranked third in the circuit with an average of 1.72 picks per game. As a team last season the Colonials averaged 7.41 steals a contest, the best mark under head coach Mark Schmidt and good enough to rank fourth in the NEC. Robert Morris has continued is defensive mindset in , as the Colonials enter Thursday s Iowa ranked third in the NEC in steals with an average of 7.38 picks per game, behind only Quinnipiac (7.88) and Fairleigh Dickinson (7.78). Defense Wins Championships - Head coach Mark Schmidt has preached over the course of his five years as head coach that a suffocating defense will lead to victories, and his mantra was proven correct in In RMU s 14 victories on the campaign, opponents shot just 43.7 percent (326-for-746) from the field and averaged just 61.5 points per game. In contrast, in the 15 losses suffered by the Colonials in , opponents converted 51.6 percent (425-for-824) of its field goal attempts and averaged 78.3 points per contest. The bell rings true when the statement is made that defense wins championships, as the Colonials were 12-3 on the campaign when holding their opponent under 70 points in a game. In all under Schmidt, RMU is (.741) when holding opponents under 70 points a contest, including 2-0 so far on the season Numerical Roster No. Name Pos. Ht. Wt. Yr. 9 Colonial Basketball Game Notes #25 Iowa - 12/22/05) - Page 9 Imagine That - Robert Morris snapped an eight-game losing streak when shooting under 40 percent in its victory over Maine (11/28/05). Despite converting just 31.9 percent (22-for-69) of their shots from the floor, the Colonials got the victory thanks in large part to crashing the boards, finishing with 45, including 25 offensive rebounds. The last time RMU shot less than 40 percent from the floor and won came in a Sacred Heart (1/24/04). Ironically, the Colonials won that game thanks to 47 rebounds, including 15 offensive boards. Your History Lesson - RMU is the only school ever to jump from junior college to NCAA Division I in the same year (1976), and the Colonials are the NEC record holder for league titles and subsequent NCAA Tournament appearances with five. Robert Morris also owns the only victory in the NCAA Tournament among NEC teams, a win over Georgia Southern in the 1983 opening round game. RMU has never played in the NIT. In , Shovlin called his 500th Robert Morris men s basketball broadcast. Each of RMU s games are also heard live and archived on the internet at The Mark Schmidt Show is heard on WPIT 15 minutes before and again after the game. The Mark Schmidt Show is also heard on the public address system in the Charles L. Sewall Center after home games. Colonial Season-Highs NEC Coaches Poll According to a poll of league head coaches, Robert Morris was picked to finish 10th in the Northeast Conference in Picked as the preseason favorite is Fairleigh Dickinson, which earned nine of a possible 11 first-place votes.
