Players of the Week Beginning Nov. 24, a Big 12 Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week will be chosen each Monday afternoon throughout the regular season. Players are nominated by the schools sports information directors and chosen by a vote of a designated media panel. The Players of the Week will be released on Monday afternoons. Coaches Teleconferences Through the work of Premiere Conferencing, the Big 12 will host nine regular season women s basketball teleconferences during the season. The briefings will feature seven minutes with each head coach and will take place every Tuesday during the conference season beginning at 10 a.m. CST. A 10th teleconference will be conducted on March 18, beginning at 10 a.m. central time, and will feature only the head coaches involved in postseason play. 3 Big 12 Women s Basketball Release Week 7 BIG 12 NOTES The Big 12 continues its amazing run through December with a 50-9 (.847) record for the month. The Big 12 also continues to lead the nation in winning percentage with an (80.0) mark. This record includes 21 games against Top 25 teams in which Big 12 schools are Fourteen of the matchups have been between ranked teams. Big 12 ranked teams are 9-5 vs. ranked opposition. Big 12 teams have played eight teams ranked in the Top 10 and are 3-5 in those contests. Non-Conf. Record 1. Big (.800) 2. ACC (.753) 3. SEC (.752) 4. Big Ten (.714) 5. Big East (.692) After Baylor s game vs. North Carolina State on Monday, the league is off until Dec. 28 for the Christmas break. Non-conference competition resumes from Dec. 28-Jan. 4. The Big 12 conference season will begin on Wednesday, Jan. 7. The Big 12 had five teams ranked in both the AP and ESPN/USA Today polls for the first time since Nov. 25, 2002, when preseason rankings were released. The Big 12 had at least five rated teams in 30 straight AP polls from Jan. 8, 2001-Nov. 25, Five teams remain ranked through the first six polls of the season. Texas Tech is one of only nine teams to remain undefeated this season. Other undefeated teams are Connecticut, Idaho, Miami (Fla.), Minnesota, Southern Mississippi, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Virginia Tech. The Lady Raiders have jumped out to an 11-0 mark that includes a 4-0 record against Top 25 opponents. In addition to Texas Tech, Texas has achieved double-digit wins already this season. The Longhorns notched their 10th win when they beat Georgia last Saturday. At 9-1, Baylor will be looking for its 10th win when it plays North Carolina State late Monday afternoon. Big 12 teams have really played well at home this season, posting a 52-4 (92.9 percent) home court mark. The national percentage for home court wins is 65.1 percent. The Big 12 has gone over the 276,000 mark in total home attendance through 56 home outings. On Sunday (Dec. 21), Oklahoma set a new state record for attendance at a women s basketball game with 12,080 at its Tennessee game and Texas Tech drew 14,674 for its win over Stanford, the fifth-largest home crowd in school history. BIG 12/SEC CHALLENGE The Big 12 went 1-1 in its first challenge with the SEC. No. 5 Texas beat No. 10/9 Georgia 71-58, but No. 13/15 Oklahoma fell to No. 2 Tennessee The Big 12 is now 10-6 in challenge games (1-1 vs. SEC, 6-2 vs. ACC, 3-1 vs. Big Ten, and 0-2 vs. Pac-10). 5 Big 12 Women s Basketball Release Week 7 BIG 12 TEAM NOTES Baylor After posting victories over UPR-Mayaguez and Eastern Michigan in the San Juan Shootout in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Lady Bears will face North Carolina State on Monday for the Shootout championship. Baylor will then be idle until Dec. 30 when it travels to Gainesville, Fla., to take on the University of Florida. Sophia Young, a sophomore forward/post, leads Baylor in both scoring and rebounding with 18.0 points and 8.5 rebounds a game. Junior post Steffanie Blackmon is not far behind with 15.4 points and 7.3 rebounds a game. Freshman forward Emily Niemann, last week s Big 12 Rookie of the Week, is the final Lady Bear to average in double digits in scoring with 10.9 points a game. The Lady Bears continue to post impressive numbers. They are shooting.509 for the season, averaging 85.0 points a game and haul down rebounds a contest. Under head coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson, the Lady Bears are 43-2 in regular season non-conference games. Colorado Colorado is 8-1 for the second-straight year, with a record of 5-0 at home and 2-1 on the road. Kate Fagan played in her 100th game for Colorado against Southern California, the third senior Buff to reach that mark this season (Bjorklund, Wirt). Ceal Barry earned her 487th career win, leaving her 13 shy of the 500 club. She will be shooting to become the 27th coach in the NCAA to reach the benchmark. CU is now 4-1 this season when trailing at halftime, and the win at Southern California marked the fourth time this season that Colorado has overcome a double-digit deficit to win the game (Notre Dame, -12; Harvard, -15; CSU, -10; USC, -12). Tera Bjorklund passed Erin Carson (1,501) for seventh place on CU s career scoring chart with 1,515 to date and has moved into fourth in free throws with 397. She has 27 straight double-digit scoring games. Iowa State Iowa State dropped a decision to No. 24 Washington Sunday in Ames. The Cyclones could not stop the Huskies three seniors, who combined for 50 points. Anne O Neil had a season-best 20 points to lead ISU, adding two rebounds and three assists. Brittany Wilkins came off the bench for eight points and six rebounds, while Lisa Kriener posted eight points and four rebounds. The Cyclones were outrebounded (35-33) for the second time this season. Katie Robinette played nine minutes in her first game as a Cyclone, tallying four points and two rebounds. Iowa State takes a break from action until Northern Iowa comes to Ames Dec. 30. The Cyclones close out their non-conference schedule against Eastern Illinois Jan. 3. Kansas Kansas had its five-game win streak snapped by Denver Sunday afternoon, falling in the Denver Wells Fargo Tournament championship game. Crystal Kemp was named to the all-tournament team as the Jayhawks dropped to 5-3 on the season. KU was led by Aquanita Burras, who scored 15 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Kemp and Erica Hallman rounded out the KU offense with 14 points each as the Hawks shot just 36.8 percent from the floor. Junior Blair Waltz sat out the game with the flu. The Jayhawks will next be in action Dec at the Dartmouth Blue Sky Restaurant Classic with Fairfield, UNC Wilmington and host Dartmouth in Hanover, N.H. Kansas State Five straight games and counting, Kansas State is on its longest winning streak of the season after downing Iowa (82-60) and Creighton ( In both games combined, the Wildcats shot 59 percent from the floor and outrebounded opponents by a margin of 18.5 rebounds per game. K-State also picked up its first road win of the season and first win against a Big Ten opponent at Iowa (lost to Purdue on Nov. 16 and lost to Penn State on Nov. 29). Junior Laurie Koehn moved into the school s Top 25 all-time scorers list (1,053 career points to date) and has drained 33 three-pointers so far this season. Freshman Claire Coggins made her fifth consecutive start and currently is tied for first on the team in steals (20) with junior All-America Kendra Wecker. Creighton was the third consecutive home opponent in which the Wildcats scored 94 points against (94 vs. Sacramento State on Dec. 5 and 94 vs. Saint Louis on Dec. 6). Senior All- America Nicole Ohlde scored 19 of her season-high 32 points in the first half alone vs. Creighton. Missouri Missouri held off Evansville behind Evan Unrau s game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds. It was the third double-double of Unrau s career. Sophomore guard LaToya Bond tied her career-high with eight assists. The game featured eight ties and 11 lead changes. The Tigers have the next nine days off for the holidays before resuming play on Dec. 30 by hosting Iowa. Nebraska Nebraska matched its victory total from by improving to 8-1 on the year with a come-from-behind victory over in-state rival Creighton. The Huskers, who have won six straight games, improved to 6-0 at the Devaney Center to match their home win total for the entire season. Keasha Cannon-Johnson, who earned Big 12 Player-of-the-Week honors on Dec. 15, produced her best all-around game of the year by scoring a season-high 23 points, grabbing eight rebounds, dishing out four assists and snagging a seasonhigh four steals in the win over Creighton. She accounted for nearly half of the Huskers 24 made field goals in the game. Cannon-Johnson ranks second on the team with 12.0 points per game, while leading the Big 12 with 9.8 rebounds per contest. Margaret Richards added her second double-double of the season in the win over Creighton. She scored 11 points and yanked down a career-high 15 rebounds in the win over the Bluejays. Richards actually tied her previous career high of 11 rebounds in the first half. She also came up big in the clutch again for NU, scoring four of Nebraska s final seven points in the final 38 seconds to help the Huskers outscore the Bluejays 13-1 in the final 3:30. Richards leads the Huskers by averaging 13.0 points per game, while ranking third on the club with 7.3 rebounds per game. Oklahoma Oklahoma lost to No. 2 Tennessee in its only game of the week. The Sooners are now 1-1 vs. Top 25 teams this year. The game was played in front of a crowd of 12,080, the largest to watch a women s basketball game in the state of Oklahoma history. Caton Hill led OU with 17 points and nine rebounds. Dionnah Jackson added 12 points and Maria Villarroel had 11. OU s next game is at home against Illlinois on Dec. 28. Oklahoma State Oklahoma State returned to action last Thursday for the first time since Dec. 6 with a overtime win over Santa Clara. The win was the first-ever nonconference road win for the Cowgirls under head coach Julie Goodenough. OSU s 91 points were its highest offensive output since scoring 92 against Texas A&M in the 2002 Big 12 Tournament. The contest was OSU s first overtime game since an loss at Oklahoma on Feb. 24, The Cowgirls current four-game winning streak is its first since the season. OSU will look to win its fifth consecutive on Dec. 31 against Texas-Arlington for the first time since opening the season with five-straight wins. Senior Trisha Skibbe scored a careerhigh 34 points on her way to her third consecutive double-double. She moved into seventh place on the school s all-time scoring chart and now has 1,412 career points. Skibbe has now scored at least 20 points in six consecutive games. Freshman Christian Hood recorded her first career double-double in the win over the Broncos with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Texas The Longhorns improved to 10-1 and increased their home-court win streak to 25 games by going 2-0 last week, with both games at home. Texas, now 5-0 at the Erwin Center this year, beat UT-Pan American (90-25) and No. 10/9 Georgia (71-58). The 25-game win streak is the third-longest current homecourt win streak in the nation. Texas is now 2-1 against the Top 10 to date (has not played anyone ranked 11th-25th). The Horns next opponent is No. 2 Tennessee on Sunday, Dec. 28 in Knoxville, and Texas has a two-game win streak in that annually-played game. Texas is now 27-2 in its last 29 games, dating back to last January. Last week, the Horns were ranked No. 8 nationally in scoring margin, and are now outscoring the opposition by (81.6 ppg to 52.4 ppg). Nine of UT s first 11 opponents have been held to 58 points or less. In the two games, the Horns were led by the 6-2 junior duo of Heather Schreiber and Kala Bowers and senior Stacy Stephens. Texas Tech Texas Tech was the first Top 25 team to claim 10 victories in The Lady Raiders are now 11-0 on the year, which is the best start in school history. Freshman Alesha Robertson made her first collegiate start against Stanford and recorded career highs of 18 points, six rebounds and three steals in 28 minutes of play. Sophomore Jametra Clark came off the bench to score 11 points, secondhighest on the team behind freshman Alesha Robertson s 18, in the win over Stanford. Junior Cisti Greenwalt moved to third on Tech s career list for blocks with 158. Senior Casey Jackson and Greenwalt both finished with double-doubles at Washington, which was the first time this season Tech has had two players record double-doubles in the same game. Jackson had 10 points and a game-high 16 rebounds, while Greenwalt had season highs of 15 points and 11 boards. It was the third double-double for Jackson this season and the first for Greenwalt. 5
