The Bulldogs are 2-1 on the homestand after defeating Montreat and Western Carolina last week. The Bulldogs have had a week off because of exams while Wofford enters the game with a 2-6 record following a loss to Western Carolina on Wednesday. Last Time Out: Stacy Shepard and Andrea Clapp each scored 16 points to lead four Bulldogs in double-figures as UNC Asheville defeated Western Carolina for the 2nd year in a row. Velinda Vuncannon and Katie Baldwin had 12 and 10 points respectively as the Bulldogs built an 18-point lead early in the second half but had to weather several Catamount comebacks before earning the victory. Asheville was able to hold on despite having two starters foul out. In addition, Clapp injured her shoulder with five minutes left and did not return. The 83 points were a season-high for Asheville and the Dogs shot over 50 percent from the floor for the secondstraight game. Series History: UNC Asheville leads the all-time series 5-1 after winning at Wofford last season. The Bulldogs have won two in a row in the series since the Terriors only win came during the season. The first meeting between the two teams came during the season when UNCA won Up Next: Asheville wraps up its seasonlong five game homestand as it hosts North Carolina A&T at the Justice Cener on Dec. 16. The Bulldogs are 3-0 alltime against the Aggies. UNCA won last season s meeting in Greensboro. Scouting Wofford: The Terriers are 2-6 under first year coach Edger Farmer and are currently riding a five-game losing streak. Wofford dropped a decision against WCU on Wednesday despite a season-high 17 point effort from K.C. Correll. Ricaye Harris had 15 points and Nakia Mister added 10 points for the Terriers. Harris leads the team averaging 9.8 points per game. The Terriers have failed to reach the 70 point mark in seven of their eight games this season. Wofford vs. the Big South: Wofford has only played one Big South opponent this season, losing to Birmingham- Southern. The Terriers have lost their last three games to Big South opponents. Back-to-Back: Freshman Stacy Shepard earned her second straight Big South Conference Freshman of the Week honor as she posted double figures in both games last week. She scored 12 points in the win against Montreat and 16 points in the win over Western. It is the first time in her three years in Asheville that the Bulldogs have played on Dec. 11. Baldwin and Opfer Notch Career Highs: Sophomores Katie Baldwin and Allie Opfer each recorded careerhighs in points last Wednesday against Montreat. Baldwin was 5-8 from the floor and 2-2 from the line for 12 points while Opfer was 5-8 from the floor for 10 points. Hot Dogs: Asheville is second in the Big South in team field goal percentage and team free throw percentage. Over the last two games, the Bulldogs are (52.4 percent) from the floor and 7-18 (39 percent) from 3-pt. range. The Bulldogs are (68 percent) from the foul line. Katie Baldwin is 10-for-10 from the line over the last two games and has made 12 straight for the season. Season-High s All Around: The Montreat game was not only the Bulldogs first win of the season but UNCA recorded season-highs in nine statistical categories including field goal percentage (53.7) and rebounds (46). Civic Duty: After defeating Western last Saturday, the Bulldogs have won two-straight games at the Asheville Civic Center. UNCA is now 3-5 alltime and Coach Blose is 2-1 playing downtown. Home Sweet Home: Today s game is the fourth straight at home. UNCA is 2-1 on the homestand and has North Carolina A&T on Thursday before traveling to Navy. The Good Thief: Kristal Hood is seond in the Big SOuth in steals averaging 3.83 thefts per game. As a team. the Bulldogs dropped to third in the league in steals after recording just four against Western. Still UNCA averages steals per game for the season. They re Free: Asheville is second in the Big South in free throw percentage hitting 68.5 percent of its foul shots. Liberty leads the conference at 69.6 percent. Katie Baldwin is fourth in the Big South making 87.5 percent (14-16) of her free throw attempts. High Point s Katie O Dell leads the league hitting all 15 of her attempts this season. 3 Southern Comfort: The Bulldogs are becoming quite comfortable playing Southern Conference foes. Wofford marks the third SoCon opponent for UNCA this season and the second in a row. Asheville lost to Furman and defeated Western Carolina It s Been A While: With its opening night loss to Lehigh, Asheville is now 0-13 in season openers since defeating UNC Wilmington to start the 1991 season. Elder Sets Career High: Amanda Elder matched her career high with nine points against Furman. She also scored nine in the opener against Lehigh. She is averaging 5.7 points per game after averaging 1.0 a game last season. Barton Ready for Return: Freshman Ashton Barton got the start opening night against Lehigh but was injured taking a charge near the end of the first half. She has not played since the injury but has been practicing with the team. She dressed out for the first time against WCU and is active for today s game. Clapp to Miss Two Weeks: Senior Andrea Clapp injured her shoulder after a 16 point performance against Western last Saturday. She is third on the team in scoring and second in rebounding. She will miss the next two games and is hopeful to return for the Navy trip. Jackson in Portugal: Last season s leading scorer and rebounder Tonisha Jackson recently signed a contract to play for Clube de Povo De Esgueira in Averiro, Portugal. She scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in her debut. Esgueira currently has a 5-4 record and is in 4th place in the Potuguese 1st Division. Guarding the Boards: Asheville s Kristal Hood continues to lead the team in rebounding grabbing 5.3 boards per game. UNCA guards have 92 rebounds this season accounting for 45 percent of the team s rebounds. The posts are pulling down 41 percent of rebounds. The other 14 percent are team rebounds. Must See TV: UNC Asheville will play on Fox Sportsnet on Jan. 29, when the Bulldogs travel to High Point. It will be the Bulldogs first TV game since playing Charleston Southern during the season. Bulldogs Picked Third in BSC: UNC Asheville was picked to finish third in the Big South Preseason Poll voted on by league coaches and sports information directors. Liberty is once again picked to win the league with 128 votes while High Point received 107 votes. Asheville received 91 votes followed by Radford (66), Charleston Southern (62), Birmingham-Southern (56), Winthrop (37), and Coastal (29). Hood Named to Preseason Team: Junior Kristal Hood was selected to the Big South Preseason All-Conference team. Hood is the Bulldogs leading returning scorer from a year ago when she averaged 11.4 points per game. During the two preseason games, Hood averaged 18 points and nine rebounds per game. Blose Named Coach of the Year: Head Coach Betsy Blose was the 2004 Big South Conference Coach of the Year. She guided the Bulldogs to the biggest turnaround in the NCAA last season. Asheville s 19-9 record was the best mark since UNCA became Division I in Hendley Named Freshman of the Year: Brittany Hendley was the 2004 Big South Freshman of the Year as she averaged 6.9 points per game last season. This preseason Hendley has gotten off to a slow start averaging 5.5 minutes per game. She did not score in either preseason game. When its Close...
