Enrollment: 3,500 Founded: 1927 Conference: Big South Nickname: Bulldogs Colors: Royal Blue and White Arena (Capacity): Justice Center (1,100) Chancellor: Dr. James Mullen Athletic Director: Janet Cone Head Coach: Betsy Blose Record at UNCA: 39-45/third year Overall Record: /10th year Website: The Game: Third seeded UNC Asheville, winners of four of its last five games, advance to the Advance Auto Parts Big South Championship semifinals for only the third time in its history. The Bulldogs are 1-1 all-time in conference semifinals losing in 1987 to Radford, 89-68, before winning in 1998, 66-61, over Radford here in Lynchburg. The Bulldogs face the number two seed, High Point, who has won nine-straight games. The Panthers are also 1-1 in semifinal action. Last Time Out: Stacy Shepard scored 12 points and Andrea Clapp added 10 points as UNC Asheville defeated Radford, in the quarterfinals of the 2005 Advance Auto Parts Big South Conference Tournament Tuesday night. The victory ended a seven-game tournament losing streak for the Bulldogs. UNCA held Radford to a tournament-record low of 32 points. The Lady Highlanders shot just 19 percent (12-of-63) from the field. The 79 points scored by the two teams was a tournament record for lowest combined points. Shepard was 5-of-8 from the field and 2-of-2 from the free throw line. She had five rebounds and blocked three shots. Clapp collected seven rebounds for the Bulldogs. Series History: High Point owns a 15-6 advantage in the all-time series sweeping the Bulldogs this season. The two teams split last year s meetings with each team winning on its home floor. Scouting High Point: The Panthers are led by two 1st team All-Big South performers in Katie O Dell and Charlena Martin. O Dell averages 15 points and 8.1 rebounds per game while Martin chips in 12.7 points and 3.1 assists per contest. However, the play of Candyce Sellers is the reason HPU has run off nine straight games. Sellers averages just 8.4 points per game but 10.4 points in Big South play. She scored 20 points against the Bulldogs when the two teams met in Asheville on Feb. 19. In the first two meetings, three point shooting and turnovers told the tale. The Panthers forced 23.5 UNCA turnovers and held the Bulldogs to 3-of-19 (15.8%) from the arc. Meanwhile, the Panthers shot (37.8%) from the arc and turned the ball over 13 times a game. Tournament History: UNC Asheville is 5-17 all-time in the Big South Tournament. The Bulldogs only finals appearance came in 1998 when UNCA fell to Liberty

The 32 points were the lowest scored by a team besting the 33 points Coastal scored in the 2002 final against Liberty. The combined total of 79 points was the lowest point production but two teams since that same 2002 final went Liberty and Coastal combined for 90 points. The game marked the second time this season UNCA has held an opponent under 40 points (Winthrop 33, 1/18) and was the eighth time the Bulldogs held an opponent to 50 points or less. UNCA s 47 points was also the lowest total by a winning team in a tournament game. Liberty defeated Elon in the 2001 title game Hood, Shepard, and Elder Garner Big South Honors: The Bulldogs earned three Big South honors this season as Kristal Hood earned Big South 2nd-Team All-Conference honors for the second straight year. Stacy Shepard was named to the All-Freshman team and Amanda Elder was named to the All-Academic team. SoCon Champs: Western Carolina won the Southern Conference championship last weekend. UNC Asheville defeated WCU back on Dec. 4, and posted a 2-1 mark against the Southern Conference. The Good Thief: Kristal Hood is second in the Big South and is 44th in the nation in steals averaging 2.7 thefts per game. Hood broke the UNCA single-season steals record in the season finale against BSC. The old record of 71 was held by Vicki Giffin during the season. That s Four: Freshman Stacy Shepard won the Big South Freshman of the Week three of the first four weeks and shared her fourth Freshman of the Week honor this week along with Radford s Kelli Darden. Shepard scored 17 points at Coastal Carolina on Saturday and pulled down a career best 13 rebounds at CSU on Monday. Barton Named FOTW: Ashton Barton was as the Big South New Balance Freshman of the Week on Feb. 21. Barton recorded career-highs in points and rebounds with a 17-pt, 8-reb. performance against HPU. For the week, she averaged 10.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per contest, while shooting.500 from beyond the arc.

3 Kristal Clear: Kristal Hood put backto-back 20+ scoring games together for the first time this season against Liberty and Radford. Hood now has six 20+ point games this season. Iron Dog: Kristal Hood is the only Bulldog to have started every game this season. She is on a streak of 53 consecutive starts which began on Nov. 30, Hood leads the Bulldogs in minutes averaging 28.9 minutes per game. Elder Loves BSC: Sophomore Amanda Elder seems to really enjoy playing against Birmingham-Southern. In the two games this season, she set her career high in scoring with 16 points in the first meeting and 18 points in the second meeting. On Saturday she was 7-11 from the floor, 3-3 from the line with seven points and four assists against the Panthers. From Bad to Good: UNC Asheville seniors Laura Kirby and Lindsey Roche are the only two Bulldogs who have been with the program for four years. Their freshmen season saw the Bulldogs post a 1-27 mark under former coach Kathleen Weber. UNCA went 3-25 their sophomore year, 19-9 as juniors, and now as seniors have posted a mark. Turning It Around: After having just one winning season in 18 years, the Bulldogs assured themselves back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since moving to Division I in 1986 with the win over Winthrop on Feb. 23. The last two seasons have the seen the Bulldogs post a record. Three for All: The Bulldogs hit a seasonhigh nine three-pointers against Charleston Southern on Feb. 9, and then hit eight more against Liberty on Feb. 23. Against CSU and Liberty, the Bulldogs were 17-of- 32 (53.1%) from beyond the arc. Too Many Three s: In the last three games, the Bulldogs are (29.0 percent) from the arc and (66.1 percent) from the free throw line. That is an average of 20.6 three s and FT s attempted in each game. For the season, the Bulldogs average 13 three s and 21.5 FT s per game. Barton Plays Well at Home: Freshman Ashton Barton loves playing at the Justice Center. She hit the game winning three-pointer with against Radford. She set her career high of 17 points and 8 rebounds against High Point. All six of her double-figure scoring games have come at the Justice Center where she is averaging 7.3 points per game while scoring 2.9 points per game away from the Doghouse. Second Time Through: The second time through the Big South schedule was not kind to the Bulldogs. After recording a 5-2 record the first time through the league, UNCA went 3-4 the second time through falling to Liberty, Radford, HPU, and BSC. Baldwin Notches Career Highs: Sophomore Katie Baldwin set career-highs in points and rebounds with a 15 point/ 6 rebound performance at Liberty last Saturday. Baldwin was 5-10 from the floor including going 3-for-4 from 3-point range. Looking Toward 1,000: Kristal Hood will likely be the next Bulldog to reach the 1,000 point milestone. The junior currently has 937 career points. She needs 63 more to reach the milestone. Hood has been an all round player collecting 352 rebounds, 180 assists, and 163 steals. Double Hood: Kristal Hood recorded the Bulldogs first double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds against High Point on Jan. 29. Hood has the top five scoring performance of the season for the Bulldogs. She scored 31 against Wofford, 28 at Radford, 23 at Furman, and 21 at Tennessee State, and 20 at Liberty. Home Sweet Home: Asheville is 11-4 at home this season winning five-straight in December. The Bulldogs are 22-6 at home over the last two season after posting a 12-2 home record a year ago. UNCA shot 40.4 percent from the floor, 33.3 percent from 3-pt. range, and is averaged 62.3 ppg in the Justice Center this season. Quality Not Quantity: The Bulldogs don t shoot a lot of three-pointers but the Dogs own the two highest 3-point percentage games in the Big South this season. UNCA was 6-8 (75%) against Tennessee State and was 8-12 (67%) against NC A&T. Magic Number: 60 seems to be the number to beat for Asheville this season. When the Bulldogs score 60 points or more they are 10-4 on the season. When opponents score 60 or more UNCA has a 2-9 mark. Roche for Three: Lindsey Roche made a season-high four three-pointers against Birmingham-Southern on March 5. She is third in the Big South in 3-pt. FG percentage. She has hit on 28-of-76 attempts this season for 38.4 percent. Liberty s Kristal Tharp leads the Conference at 39.6 percent. Clapp s Back: Senior Andrea Clapp missed two weeks with an injured shoulder but returned on Dec. 22, against Delaware State. In the first seven games of her return, she averaged 11.6 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. She was from the floor and from the free throw line to lead the Dogs to a 5-2 mark over that stretch. Hood Ornament: Kristal Hood was named Big South Player of the Week for Dec. 20, after dropping in a career high 31 points against Wofford. Hood went from the floor including 3-4 from 3-pt. range. She was 8-13 from the line while grabbing eight rebounds in 43 minutes of action. Strong Start: UNCA is 8-11 in Big South openers after defeating Birmingham- Southern to open the conference season. The Bulldogs won their conference opener on the road of the first time since winning at Charleston Southern to start the conference season. They re Free: Asheville shot a season high 93 percent (13-14) from the free throw line against Morehead State. UNCA is fourth in the Big South in free throw percentage and has two players in the top ten in the league in free throw shooting. Kristal Hood is fourth making for 76.4 percent. Amanda Elder is sixth in the Big South making for 70.4 percent. Lots of Points: Asheville is currently third in the Big South in scoring averaging 60.5 points per game. The Bulldogs had a three-game stretch where they scored at least 80 points in three-straight games, in December. It was the first time since the season the Dogs posted threestraight 80 point games.
