Kenon's 38 were the most points scored by a Keydet in a game this season and equaled the most points scored by a Big South player in The performance also tied him for 10th on the all-time single-game VMI scoring list, and moved the Virginia Beach native into 21st on the career scoring chart at the Institute. Tuesday's effort came on 9 of 18 shooting, as well as 14 of 15 from the foul line. The new career-best surpassed his former high (34), set in the final of last year's Big South Championship at Radford. With the win, the Keydets moved to and 5-11 in the Big South. Despite 21 points from Nick Barbour and double-doubles from Cruz Daniels and Corey Law, HPU dropped to and 8-7 in Big South play. Stan Okoye earned his third Freshman of the Week honor from the Big South Conference last Monday (Feb. 15). The rookie from Raleigh, N.C. has averaged 18.5 points, 9.3 rebounds and 2.2 blocks while shooting 56% from the floor and 37% from beyond the arc over the past 12 games. In the first five of those games, Okoye had at least 20 points and 10 rebounds each time out, and he now leads the team with eight double-doubles on the year. With five three-pointers against Seton Hall on Dec. 12, Austin Kenon topped the 200 career made three-pointers threshold to become eligible for Big South and NCAA career rankings. Kenon currently ranks among the top 20 alltime in NCAA Division I history with s made per game and ranks second in VMI history with 247 three-pointers. VMI (10-16, 5-11 Big South) vs. Charleston Southern (12-15, 6-10) Thursday, Feb. 25; 7:30 p.m. CSU Field House North Charleston, S.C. He currently has 1,199 points in his 74 career games, averaging 16.2 points per outing. He needs two points to surpass Matt Murrer to enter VMI s career top 20 in scoring. In , VMI is shooting to become the first school in NCAA Division I history to lead the nation in scoring for four straight years. Last season, VMI joined Furman ( ) and Loyola Marymount ( ) as the only teams to lead the country in scoring for three years in a row. This year, the Keydets lead the nation with 90.0 points per game. A VMI win against Charleston Southern would: Give VMI a season sweep of the Bucs for the fourth year in a row. CSU last defeated VMI on Feb. 18, 2006, as the Keydets have currently won seven in a row in the series. The Keydets currently hold a 12-5 advantage in the all-time series, including an 8-5 mark against the Bucs since joining the Big South Conference. Improve VMI to 6-4 in their last 10 games. It would also give VMI back-to-back wins for the second time this season. Mark VMI s third road win of the season and give the Keydets an edge for the #7 seed in next week s Big South Championship, entering Saturday s play. A VMI win against Coastal Carolina would: Improve the Keydets to 5-2 over the past three years against the Chants. VMI trails the all-time series, 9-5, however. A VMI sweep of Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina would: Give the Keydets the #7 seed in the Big South Championship. Kenon poured in six three-pointers and hit 14 of 15 free throws in the win, including VMI s first 10 points of the game. The junior was joined in double figures by Keith Gabriel (18 pts.), Stan Okoye (13) and Michael Sparks (10) for the Keydets. Kenon s performance ranked as one of the top 10 scoring outputs in VMI history and matched the most points scored by a Big South player this season. His 38 points left him one point shy of a tie for 20th place on VMI s career scoring charts, as he currently has 1,199 markers in his career, good enough for 21st on the Keydets all-time list. The win was VMI s first on a senior night under head coach Duggar Baucom. Okoye Takes Big South Freshman of the Week Honor A Third Time: For the third time this season, VMI forward Stan Okoye was named the Big South Men's Basketball Crons Brand Freshman of the Week, it was announced on Monday, Feb. 15. Okoye averaged 21.5 points, eight rebounds and two blocked shots in two games for VMI on the week. He opened the week with 26 points and 11 rebounds in the Keydets' victory at Gardner-Webb. He was 10 of 15 from the field and blocked four shots while recording his sixth 20-point, 10-rebound game of the season. Okoye then scored 17 points, went 7 of 9 from the floor and grabbed five rebounds at UNC Asheville, despite playing just 11 minutes against the Bulldogs due to foul trouble. In his two games, Okoye posted a 70.8 field goal percentage (17 of 24) and was 7 of 11 from the charity stripe. Kenon & Okoye Power Keydets Past Runnin Bulldogs: Thanks to a combined 55 points from junior Austin Kenon and freshman Stan Okoye, VMI scored a key, win over Gardner-Webb on Feb. 11. The Keydets pulled even with the Runnin Bulldogs in the Big South standings with the win, as Kenon connected on a season-best six three-pointers while Okoye contributed a season-best 26 points, along with 11 rebounds and four blocks for his eighth double-double of the season. The Keydets broke the game open early with a 14-0 run in just over two-and-a-half minutes. Trailing 4-2 four-plus minutes into the contest, five different Keydets connected for buckets while GWU committed four turnovers and missed four field goals during the run. The Keydets led by at least six points the rest of the night and connected on eight of 10 free throws in the final minute to cap the win.

3 Keydet Honors Stan Okoye - Big South Freshman of the Week (Jan. 18) - Big South Freshman of the Week (Jan. 25) - Big South Freshman of the Week (Feb. 15) VMI improved to 2-0 at Paul Porter Arena and 3-2 all-time against the Runnin Bulldogs. Furious Rally Falls Short Versus Eagles: When Winthrop s Andy Buechert threw home a dunk to give the Eagles a lead with 3:33 remaining in the game, things were looking bleak for the homestanding Keydets. Buechert, however, was whistled for a technical foul when he hung on the rim, resulting in a pair of free throws that Austin Kenon knocked down. That spurred a 20-6 rally over the next three-and-a-half minutes, as the Keydets pulled within three, with just three seconds remaining. Kenon s driving layup that pulled the Keydets within one possession was quickly followed by a foul that sent the Eagles Reggie Middleton to the line, where he sank the first of two free throws, pushing the Eagles to their fifth consecutive win. VMI sophomore guard Keith Gabriel led VMI in scoring with 21 points including three 3- pointers. Kenon added 16 points and nailed eight-of-nine free throws, but was limited to just six minutes of action in the first half after picking up two fouls before the first media timeout. Freshman Stan Okoye scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for his seventh double-double game of the season and sixth over the last nine games. Sophomore guard Ron Burks added 12 points and seven rebounds for the home team. Keydet Run Ruins Blue Hose: In the opening six-and-a-half minutes of its Feb. 4 game against Presbyterian College, VMI suffered one of its worst runs of the season. The homestanding Keydets fell behind 22-8 and missed each of its first eight three-pointers. Then freshman Joe Carr connected from long distance, and before the visiting Blue Hose knew it, the Keydets had taken control of the game for good with a 24-4 run over the next 4:12. During the flurry, VMI hit four of its six three-pointers, caused eight turnovers and held PC to one field goal in 11 possessions. The Keydets ended up with a lead at the break in the team s highest scoring firsthalf output of the season. VMI then opened up the lead to a season-best 35 points thanks to a second-half 20-2 run, thanks in large part to three consecutive three-pointers from junior Austin Kenon. Kenon and freshman Stan Okoye each netted 23 points to lead the Keydets to the victory, with sophomore Ron Burks adding 14 points, six rebounds and six assists. Okoye On A Tear: After earning Big South Freshman of the Week honors on Jan. 18, Stan Okoye went back to work with two more 20-point, 10-rebound efforts, these coming against Radford and High Point, earning the same accolade on Jan. 25. Matching up with the top frontcourt in the conference in the Highlanders on Jan. 21, Okoye set a new career-best with 23 points, while also grabbing 10 rebounds and matching his season-high with four blocks. Two days later, Okoye surpassed that effort with a 24- point, 14-rebound night at High Point, helping VMI to its first road win of the season. In all, Okoye posted five straight games with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds, leading VMI in both categories in each game. Against Big South opponents in his first trip through the league, Okoye is averaging 15.1 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.9 blocks while shooting 50% from the floor, ranking fourth in the conference in blocks and field goal percentage, sixth in rebounding and eighth in the league in scoring in league play. He also ranks third in the Big South in all games this season in field goal percentage, shooting over 52% from the floor. Keydets Score First Road Win of Season at High Point: When looking at VMI s Jan. 23 game at High Point beforehand, it sure didn t look like a contest that the Keydets were in line to win. Not only was VMI 0-8 on the road this season, but High Point entered 8-0 at the Millis Center, where VMI had managed just one win all-time. The Keydets, however, scored 15 of the first 17 points out of halftime to extend its six-point lead out to 19, then hung on for a victory over the Panthers. The win snapped a six-game losing streak for the Keydets in Big South play, while dropping High Point back into a five-way tie for third place in the conference standings. In the win, the Keydets scored 94 points, though accumulated just nine assists on 32 made field goals. The last time the Keydets had fewer than nine assists came back on Jan. 23, 2008, when the Keydets managed just six assists when scoring 41 points against Winthrop. Conversely, VMI is 9-5 when allowing 92 points or less and 1-11 when allowing more than that number. Freshman Stan Okoye has started 10 games this season and come off the bench in 16 contests. In his 10 starts, Okoye has averaged 7.3 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.1 blocks and shot 39% from the floor. Coming off the bench, Okoye has averaged 17.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, 1.8 blocks and shot 57% from the floor. The Keydets, however, stand 5-5 in those 10 games he has started and just 5-11 in those games he did not. Reggie Williams 08 Named to NBA D-League All-Star Team: Reggie Williams, the Keydets' all-time leading scorer and 2008 graduate of VMI, participated in the NBA Development League All- Star Game, playing for the Eastern Conference on Feb. 13. The All-Star Game was played at NBA All-Star Jam Session presented by adidas, and saw the West defeat the East, In the game, Williams played for 20 minutes, scoring 17 points on 7 of 11 shooting, including two three-pointers. Williams also grabbed four rebounds and handed out an assist. The night before, Williams also competed in the Shooting Starts competition, as four teams of three each shot from six numbered locations on the floor. Williams team did not advance to the finals in the competition. Williams, who is in his first season in the NBA D-League playing with the Sioux Falls (S.D.) Skyforce, currently ranks third in the league in scoring with 25.8 ppg. He is also averaging 5.7 rpg, 3.2 apg and 1.4 spg while shooting 56.4 percent from the field, 82.0 percent from the charity stripe and 38.3 percent from the 3-point line. He has scored 30+ points 10 times this season including three 43-point outings, tied for the second-most points scored in the NBA D-League this season. Keydets On Track for Unprecedented Scoring Title: Through 26 games this season, VMI is the clear leader as the nation s top-scoring team, averaging 90.0 points per game. Entering Tuesday s play, the Keydets are nearly six points per game ahead of their closest competition, Villanova (84.2), Texas (83.0), BYU (82.8) and Kansas (82.6). Should VMI be able to hang on to its current lead at season s end, it would mark the first time in NCAA Division I history that a team has led the nation in scoring four consecutive years. VMI is currently tied with Furman ( ) and Loyola Marymount ( ) as the only schools to do so for three straight years. Dry Spell Dooms Keydets Against GWU: When VMI hit its opening two three-point attempts against Gardner-Webb on Jan. 16, things were looking good, as the Keydets led 6-2 just 34 seconds in. The marksmanship did not continue for the Keydets, however, as VMI hit on just two of its next 27 three-point attempts over the next 31- plus minutes. By that point, VMI trailed by 15 points with just eight minutes remaining. In those final eight minutes, however, the threes started going down, as VMI were 7-of-12 from beyond the arc down the stretch, cutting the lead to just three with 31 seconds remaining. Gardner-Webb hit five of its six free throws the rest of the way to win by eight, Keydets Stop Slide vs. Randolph: Thanks to a strong first-half effort, VMI snapped its longest losing streak in four seasons with a win over Randolph on Jan. 11. Road Not Kind to Keydets: Playing away from Cameron Hall has not been an enjoyable experience for the Keydets this season, as they ve gone 2-10 on the road. Sports Network 1. Radford 2. Winthrop 3. 6 While VMI has averaged 95.4 points, a 43% field goal percentage and +6.3 turnover margin in home games this season, VMI has scored just 83.8 points, shot just 40% from the floor and hold just a +1.6 turnover margin on the road this season. (For complete comparison stats, see chart on page seven.) It should not be overlooked that VMI has taken on a tough schedule on the road this year. Among the opponents VMI has played on the road are a 21-5 Virginia Tech team, a 22-6 Richmond squad, a Seton Hall team that has lost seven contests to teams ranked in the top 15 in the RPI, and a George Mason team that is currently 11-3 at home. Okoye Fares Well Vs. CAA: Freshman forward Stan Okoye saved his best outings for some of VMI s toughest opponents this season. In two match-ups against foes from the Colonial Athletic Association, Okoye contributed two of his strongest games of the year. Taking on UNC Wilmington on Nov. 24, Okoye had his first career double-double, totaling then-career highs in points (18), rebounds (12) and minutes played (27). A month later, Okoye equaled that effort with 18 points, while shooting an impressive 70% (7-of-10) from the floor. He also chipped in with a block and two steals in VMI s near upset of George Mason. Kenon On Target: Last season, Austin Kenon ranked among the national leaders in 3- point shooting. The current junior finished last season ranked sixth nationally in 3's made per game with 3.7 per outing. Kenon has now played in 74 career games, and already has 247 career three-balls (3.34 3pg), shooting 37.2% from distance. He currently ranks sixth in VMI history and just outside of the top 10 in Big South history in three-point percentage in his career. Kenon also ranks in the top 20 all-time in NCAA Division I in three s made per game, while ranking fourth on the Big South charts in that category. Pirates Three-Point Barrage Sinks Keydets: Thanks to 20 three-pointers, including 12 by Jamel Jackson, Seton Hall defeated VMI, , on Saturday, Jan. 12. The 20 three-pointers made by the Pirates are the most given up by the Keydets since going to their up-tempo system four seasons ago, as were the 12 threes converted by Jackson. It marked the first time in over a year that an opponent had hit more threes than the Keydets, who drained an impressive 17 on the afternoon. The last game during which an opponent converted more threes than VMI came on Dec. 6, 2008, when UNC Asheville made 16 treys, compared to VMI s 15. VMI Finds Shooting Stroke Versus Charleston Southern (Again): There just seems to be something about playing Charleston Southern that agrees with VMI s long-distance shooters. For the fifth time during the Keydets seven-game win streak against the Bucs, VMI hit at least 15 threepointers, scoring a victory on Dec. 5. VMI hit a season-high 52% (16 of 31) from beyond the arc, including a combined 11 of 17 from sophomores Michael Sparks and Keith Gabriel. The Keydets also set a season best in field goal percentage (55%) against the Bucs. VMI also turned the ball over just 13 times and got 52 points off the bench to even its Big South mark at 1-1. 7 Burks Fills It Up: In VMI s win over Lynchburg earlier this season, Ron Burks contributed just seven points, but made his presence known elsewhere on the stat sheet. The sophomore notched a new Cameron Hall record with 13 assists, while also setting new career highs with seven steals and two blocks. Board It Up: In VMI s Nov. 18 win over West Virginia Wesleyan, rebounds were flying left and right. The two teams combined for 136 rebounds, with the Bobcats setting a new Cameron Hall record with 72 total boards. VMI, meanwhile, grabbed an unbelievable 38 offensive rebounds, far and away the most by a Keydet team since moving to the current, up-tempo style. That led to 27 second-chance points, the most by VMI since a win over Howard on Dec. 8, Contributing to VMI s 64 total rebounds were eight players that at least matched their career high in the category, led by Stan Okoye s nine. Grabbing eight caroms apiece were Nick Gore and Keith Gabriel, while Adam Lonon, Ron Burks and Michael Sparks each had six boards. Turnin Em Over: As always in Duggar Baucom s up-tempo system, turnovers were key to VMI s opening night win over Army. The Keydets caused 34 Black Knight turnovers, which led to 38 Keydet points in the victory. Army s 34 turnovers were the most that VMI had caused by a Division I opponent since forcing Radford into 41 on Jan. 25, 2007 in a victory at Cameron Hall. Williams & Holmes Selected in 2009 NBDL Draft: A pair of former Keydets were selected in the 2009 NBA Development League Draft, held on Thursday, Nov. 5. In the third round, Reggie Williams 08 was selected by the Sioux Falls (S.D.) Skyforce, while Travis Holmes 09 was taken by the Utah Flash in the event s sixth round. Holmes twin brother, Chavis (Charlotte, N.C.), meanwhile, is currently averaging 14.6 points and 1.6 steals while hitting 93% of his free throws for Caja Rioja in Spain, helping lead the club to a 10-4 start. The selections of Williams and Holmes marked the first time that players from VMI were selected in the NBDL Draft in the league s nine-year history. VMI Basketball Inks Covington During Early Signing Period: VMI head basketball coach Duggar Baucom has announced that forward/center D.J. Covington has signed a national letter-of-intent to attend VMI and play basketball starting in the academic year. "We are very excited that D.J. has signed with us," said Baucom. "He is a great young man, a terrific basketball player, and he understands the value of VMI and what this type of education will do for him. I am looking forward to coaching him and having him in our basketball family." Covington, a 6-8, 230 senior at Norfolk Academy in Norfolk, Va. where he is coached by Eric Acra, averaged 15 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks per game his junior season playing both the power forward and center positions. He was named First Team All-Tidewater Conference Independent Schools and was All-State honorable mention. Covington is a three-time All- TCIS selection and has been named All-Virginia Prep League three times. Covington's brother, Charles Clark, is an All-American sprinter for the Florida State track team and ran for the USA national team at the World Championships in Berlin where he placed fifth in the 200-meter dash. "D.J. is a versatile, explosive and game-changing athlete," said Baucom of Covington. "He will give us a physical presence around the basket that we have not had before at VMI. He runs like a deer, has a soft shooting touch, and plays above the rim." By The Numbers Let s Compare VMI s Stats... Baucom, who was also included as a finalist for the last year's Hugh Durham Award, given annually to the top mid-major coach in the country, led the Keydets to their best season in over 30 years in The team's 24 wins were the second-most in school history, while Baucom took VMI to its second Championship Final appearance in the past three years.
