Randy Breuer holds the record of 87 blocks in the season. The Gophers captured their 20th victory of the season on Sunday against the Wolverines. It's the second time under head coach Richard Pitino that Minnesota has tallied a 20+ win season, and the earliest a Gopher team has done it since Feb. 17, In doing so, the Gophers also snapped a stretch of nine straight losses to the Maize and Blue, marking the first victory over Michigan in Pitino's tenure. 3 SCOUTING THE TERRAPINS Maryland welcomes the Gophers in sole possession of third place in the Big Ten standings at 10-4, one game behind co-leaders Purdue and Wisconsin. The Terrapins lost at Wisconsin on Sunday, 71-60, ending a win streak of two with victories over Ohio State and at Northwestern. Melo Trimble leads the offense and ranks fourth in the Big Ten scoring 17.6 points per game, and is the reigning Big Ten Player of the Week after outings of 32 and 27 points last week against the Wildcats and Badgers, respectively. Justin Jackson is fourth in the conference in 3-point shooting (45 percent). He is also the team's top rebounder, grabbing 6.3 boards per game. BONUS BASKETBALL BONANZA The win against the Wolverines was Minnesota s fifth extra session game in Big Ten play this season, and that is the most conference overtime games in a season since also having five OT contests during the campaign. The Gophers have gone 3-2 in overtime this season, with wins at Purdue and over Iowa (a double-overtime affair) and Michigan. Minnesota was defeated by Michigan State and Wisconsin in the extra period at home this season. Under head coach Richard Pitino, the Gophers have amassed a record of 5-7. Minnesota is now 2-5 in overtime games versus Michigan. Minnesota s only other OT victory against Michigan was a home win in overtime on Feb. 16, ON A STREAK Minnesota has won five straight Big Ten regular-season games, a feat which has not happened frequently for the Maroon and Gold. Excluding the vacated season of , Minnesota last won five Big Ten regular season games in a row in 1978, part of a string of seven straight Big Ten wins. The Gophers' current streak is the tied for the longest in the Big Ten, behind co-leader Purdue who has also captured five straight wins. A win Wednesday against Maryland would also mean three straight road wins in Big Ten play for the first time since the season. HAWKEYE HIGHLIGHTS Minnesota captured a double-overtime win over Iowa on Feb. 8, doing so with some impressive numbers. Minnesota won its first double-overtime game (not counting vacated games) since an win at Ohio State on Feb.2,1983. The Gophers swatted 14 blocks, their highest total ever against a Big Ten opponent and tied for third best in a game. It is also the third-most by any Big Ten team in conference play. The Gophers recorded 100 points for the first time since a win over UNCW on Dec. 27, 2014, and first time in Big Ten play since Feb. 24, 1990, a win at Iowa. Jordan Murphy had a huge night for the Gophers against the Hawkeyes, as he finished with a career-high 25 points, 19 rebounds and four blocked shots, his sixth double-double of the season and 15th in his career. GETTING DEFENSIVE Minnesota is allowing opponents to connect on just 39.7 percent of their field goal attempts, ranking second in the Big Ten in field goal percentage defense and 20th nationally. In addition, Minnesota is also second in blocks per game (6.6), 13th in defensive rebounds per game (28.6), and 12th in 3-point field goal defense (30.2 percent - 1st in B1G) in the NCAA rankings (as of Feb. 20) Minnesota's 12-point win over the Hawkeyes on Feb. 8 marked their 10th double-digit victory of the season - the most since when the Gophers had 11. MASON CLIMBING CAREER CHARTS As the most experienced player in Maroon and Gold on the team, junior guard Nate Mason is seeing his career statistics begin to make a mark on the Gophers career records. Mason has totaled 357 assists for his career (4.1 apg), currently ranking him seventh behind Andre Hollins (359). Mason's assist average ties for the third-best in program history with Melvin Newbern and Adam Boone. This season, he has totaled 144 assists, a figure which is eighth among Gophers all-time. He is second in the Big Ten averaging 5.3 assists per game. Additionally, Mason has totaled 1,101 points in his three-year career. He became the 41st member of the Gophers 1,000-point club, and the first to do so since Hollins, with a late 3-pointer on Jan. 28 against Maryland. Mason sits 30th on the all-time career scoring list at Minnesota. He also became just the sixth player in program history to amass more than 1,000 points and 300 assists in his career. Mason is the just fifth player in school history with 1,100 points, 350 assists, 250 rebounds and 100 steals, joining Andre Hollins, Arriel McDonald, Melvin Newbern and Marc Wilson. Mason ranks 16th in the nation and third in the Big Ten with an assist/turnover ratio of SPRINGS REACHES POINT MILESTONE Graduate transfer Akeem Springs crossed the 1,000 career point mark on Jan. 8 against Ohio State, as he came off the bench to score 18, his second-best total this season. Springs began his career at Northern Illinois, where he scored 139 points as a freshman during He then transferred to Milwaukee, where he tallied 712 points over two seasons. This season, Springs has scored 266 points (9.9 ppg), giving him 1,117 for his career. Against Ohio State at home, Springs made 6-of-10 field goals, including 5-of-8 from three-point range, while tying his career-high with five assists. In the game in Columbus on Jan. 25, he posted his first double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Springs posted his best scoring game as a Gopher against Maryland on Jan. 28, leading the team with 23 points. MURPHY PICKS UP B1G CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS Jordan Murphy earned Big Ten Co-Player of the Week honors on Feb. 13, his first time receiving the honor, following a pair of top freshman weekly awards last season. It was the fourth award for the Gophers this season. The San Antonio, Texas native led the Gophers to a pair of victories over Iowa and Rutgers, posting double-doubles in each game highlighted by a career-high 25 points vs. Iowa. At Rutgers, Murphy scored a team-high 17 points and 11 rebounds, also contributing a steal. COFFEY EARNS A PAIR OF B1G WEEKLY AWARDS Minnesota guard Amir Coffey is off to one of the best starts of any newcomer in the country, and on Nov. 21 he was recognized by the Big Ten Conference as its Freshman of the Week. He repeated the honor on Jan. 16. He is just the fourth Gopher in program history to win the award, but the third straight to do so after Nate Mason (2014) and Jordan Murphy (2015). His 30-point outing was the most by a Gopher freshman since Kris Humphries in 2004, and the highest scoring total by a Gopher since 2015 when Andre Hollins scored 31 against Rutgers (1/17/15). Additionally, that output is the highest by any Big Ten freshman to date this season. Most recently, Coffey led the team in scoring in both victories at Northwestern (Jan. 5) at home against Ohio State (Jan. 8). MASON NAMED B1G CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK Junior guard Nate Mason was recognized as the Big Ten Co-Player of the Week on Jan. 2. Mason averaged 24.5 points per game during the Gophers narrow overtime loss to Michigan State and overtime victory at the 15th-ranked Boilermakers. In West Lafayette, Mason became the first Gopher to score more than 30 points and 10 assists in a single game, as he led all players with a career-high 31 points on 11-of-18 shooting. His 11 assists were one shy of his career high, which also came against Purdue on Jan. 27, MURPHY'S BIG NIGHT Sophomore Jordan Murphy came into the season as one of the top returners for the Gophers, and on Dec. 27 against Michigan State he put together one of his best performances. The San Antonio native pulled down a career-high 21 rebounds to go with 12 points for his fifth double-double of the season and 14th of his career. Murphy's rebounding total ties for the seventh-highest in program history, matching Melvin Northway's total on Feb. 16, 1965 at Wisconsin. Additionally it is the most rebounds by a Gopher since Jim Brewer had 22 against Marquette on Mar. 18, He broke Northway's record of 20 rebounds as the highest total by a Gopher against MIchigan State in 115 total games vs. MSU. Murphy grabbed the most rebounds in a Big Ten game since Indiana's D.J. White had 22 against Michigan in the season, and he was the first Gopher to cross the 20-rebound mark since Richard Coffey did so on Dec. 30, 1987 against Grambling State. YOUTH MOVEMENT Minnesota's youth has been a big factor in its success thus far this season. The Gophers, who rank 305th out of 351 teams according to KenPom.com in youth, have seen major contributions from their freshmen and sophomores. Sophomore Jordan Murphy is the team's leading rebounder and ranks fourth in scoring, classmate Dupree McBrayer is second in scoring, while freshman Amir Coffey is third in scoring and freshman Eric Curry ranks second on the team in rebounding. The Gophers roster features eight underclassmen. Additionally, the Gophers' youth extends to the head coach. Richard Pitino is the youngest head coach of any Power 5 (ACC, B1G, B12, Pac-12, SEC) institution. Newly announced head football coach P.J. Fleck is also the youngest Power 5 head coach in the nation. Guests also had the chance to hear from a cancer survivor who was impacted by the work of the American Cancer Society. In total, the event raised nearly $75,000 for the fight against cancer, including supporting the Richard M. Schulze Family American Cancer Society Hope Lodge located just off campus in Minneapolis. I am extremely proud that our team was able to make an impact and contribute towards defeating cancer, said Pitino. Cancer has affected me and my loved ones personally, and I am happy to give back in any way I can. I am very appreciative of all our donors and attendees who helped us surpass last year s fundraising totals.
