Georgia Tech returns home to kick off a four-game homestand against USC Upstate on Saturday at 2 p.m. In honor of Tech s Star Wars game, the fi rst 200 students will receive specially made GT Star War decals. All children 18 and under will be admitted for free and the game can be heard on WREK This will be the second meeting between Georgia Tech and USC Upstate. The two teams met back in 2007 on the Flats with GT claiming a victory. 3. Senior Aaliyah Whiteside is averaging a team-best 21.6 points per game which leads the ACC and is 16th in the nation. She became the 29th Yellow Jacket to score 1,000 career points against Southeastern Louisiana. She has scored at least 21 points in all eight games. 4. The Yellow Jackets have recorded an rebounding margin in all eight games so far this season, which is the third highest in the ACC. Tech has out rebounded six of its eight opponents. Whiteside is averaging a team-best 7.8 rebounds per game while Roddreka Rogers is grabbing 6.9 rebounds per game. 5. Head coach MaChelle Joseph became the all-time winningest coach in Georgia Tech women s basketball history last year and has a career record of and the highest winning percentage in Yellow Jacket history at 61.1 percent. She is currently in her 13th season at the helm of the Jackets. RODDREKA REBOUNDS ROGERS Senior Roddreka Rogers cracked the top 10 on Georgia Tech s all-time career rebounding list with her fi ve boards against Indiana. Rogers now has 764 career rebounds, which ties her for ninth on the all-time list. Heading into tonight s game, Rogers only needed one rebound to tie Sasha Goodlett for 10th with 760 career rebounds. She needs 37 more rebounds to tie Regina Tate ( ) and LeeAnn Woodhull ( ) for seventh with POINT STREAK STAYS ALIVE Senior Aaliyah Whiteside s streak of scoring at least 20 points was extended against the Hoosiers after scoring 22 points. Whiteside has scored at least 21 points in every game this season, which is the most by any player in the ACC. She is averaging a team-high 21.6 points per game. Whiteside has scored at least 20 points in 15 games in her career. She has led the Jackets in scoring in seven games this season. Whiteside s double-double was the fi rst of the season and the sixth of her career. Her scoring average is 16th in the nation. Whiteside is the only player in the ACC to rank in the top 15 in scoring, rebounding and steals. Along with her 21.6 points per game, Whiteside is averaging 7.8 rebounds per game (6th in the ACC) and 2.1 steals per game (t-15th in the ACC). APPROACHING MILESTONES Senior Aaliyah Whiteside became the 29th Yellow Jacket to score 1,000 career points on Nov. 18. The Memphis, Tenn., native accomplished the feat in 97 career games. Whiteside s 1,109 career points rank 21st on GT s all-time list. She is also quickly moving up Tech s all-time career free throws made list. She began this season ranked 10th with 286 made free throws but has quickly catapulted to sixth with 341 made free throws. She needs four more to tie for fi fth with Stephanie Higgs (345). Fellow senior Roddreka Rogers cracked the top 10 of Georgia Tech s all-time leading rebounding list at Indiana. Rogers has accumulated 764 boards in her four seasons so far which ties her for ninth. In order to become GT s all-time leading rebounder, Rogers needs 276 boards this season. She tallied 335 in her junior year. PICK POCKETS As a team, Georgia Tech is averaging 12.5 steals per game, which ranks third in the conference, and has had the most total steals (100) out of all ACC teams this season. The 12.5 steals per game rank eighth in the NCAA. Sophomore guard Imani Tilford is averaging a team-best 3.1 steals per game, which is fi fth in the ACC and 32nd in the nation. Tilford has grabbed at least three steals in six out of the eight games this season and has recorded fi ve steals on two different occasions. LEADING BY EXAMPLE With Tech s roster featuring nine freshmen and sophomores, seniors Aaliyah Whiteside and Roddreka Rogers leadership is key. The veteran duo has teamed up to score 40 percent of GT s offensive output this season and have pulled down 29 percent of the Jackets rebounds this season. Whiteside has scored at least 21 points in every game so far while Rogers has tallied two double-doubles. Whiteside leads Tech in scoring (21. 6 ppg) and Rogers leads GT on the boards (7.1 rpg). VUCKOVIC S GROWTH Junior Katarina Vuckovic has had quite the transformation from her sophomore to junior seasons. Vuckovic is averaging 11.1 points per game this season. She is averaging 6.6 rebounds per game, which is third on the Jackets and 16th in the ACC. She scored a career-high 20 points a Georgia and has scored in double fi gures in four of the past seven games. During her fi rst two seasons, she averaged 5.1 points per game and 3.7 rebounds per game. REBOUNDING MACHINES The Yellow Jackets 68 rebounds against Southeastern Louisiana ranks fi fth on Tech s single season list for most rebounds in a game. Georgia Tech has outrebounded every opponent besides two (Georgia and Northern Iowa) this season and holds a rebounding margin which is third in the ACC and 20th in the NCAA. Tech has three players ranked in the top 15 in rebounding average in the ACC - Senior Aaliyah Whiteside (7.8), senior Roddreka Rogers (6.9) and Katarina Vuckovic (6.6). Tech s 18.5 offensive rebounds per game is fi rst in the ACC. HONOR ROLL Aaliyah Whiteside ACC Player of the Week (11/16/15) Cancun Challenge All-Tournament Team FREE POINTS Against Alabama State, the Hornets fouled the Jackets 38 times, sending Tech to the charity stripe to shoot 51 free throws. The 51 attempted free throws are the most the Yellow Jackets have attempted at the line since Tech shot 50 free throws against Clemson on Jan. 26, Georgia Tech went 34-for-51 from the free throw line in the game, while Whiteside went 13-for-16. WHITESIDE S 20 POINT GAMES Senior Aaliyah Whiteside has scored at least 20 points in 15 games in her career and all eight games this season. The Yellow Jackets are 10-5 when Whiteside hits the 20 point mark. Whiteside is the only player in the ACC that has recorded eight 20 point games so far this season. Her 21 points against Southeastern Louisiana were enough to put her in the 1,000 point club. She is averaging a team-best and ACC-high 21.6 points per game. Whiteside has scored at least 21 points in every game so far this season. She has scored 28 percent of Georgia Tech s points through the fi rst eight games. She is the only ACC player to have eight 20 point games so far this season. Whiteside is also averaging 7.8 rebounds per game and 3.0 assists per game. All-time, Georgia Tech has 34 wins against AP ranked teams with eight of those coming on the road. LAST WIN VS. RANKED OPPONENT Tech s last win against a ranked opponent came vs. #16/17 Duke, 71-62, at home last season. The win broke a 37-game losing streak to Duke.It was the Yellow Jackets fi rst win against a top-25 opponent since the Jackets defeated No. 13/11 North Carolina on Feb. 6, ACC ACCOLADES FOR AALIYAH Senior Aaliyah Whiteside was named the ACC Player of the Week on Nov. 16. This is the second ACC weekly honor of Whiteside s career. She was named the ACC Rookie of the Week for the week of Dec. 24, Whiteside proved herself as a senior leader the opening weekend, leading the Yellow Jackets in scoring in two wins. Whiteside scored at least 20 points in both games against Loyola Chicago and St. Francis Brooklyn, and averaged 21.5 points over the opening weekend. Whiteside accounted for 25 percent of Georgia Tech s points over two games. She shot 50 percent from the fi eld and averaged 6.0 rebounds per game. Whiteside s 22 points against Loyloa Chicago were the most by any player in the ACC on opening night. It is the fi rst time that a Yellow Jacket has garnered the ACC Player of the Week award since Tyaunna Marshall received the accolade for the week of Feb. 10, Against Southeastern Louisiana, Georgia Tech had two 20 point scorers in the game in Irene Gari (24) and Aaliyah Whiteside (21). Gari scored a season-best 24 points, hitting three 3-pointers and going a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line. It was the Olivia, Spain, native s fi rst time leading the team in scoring.whiteside scored 21 points for her third-straight game scoring at least 21 points. In the next game against Georgia, two Jackets also scored 20 points - Whiteside (21) and Vuckovic (20). In every game this season, at least one player has scored at least 20 points. THE FIRST DOUBLE-DOUBLE Freshman Martine Fortune recorded the Yellow Jackets fi rst double-double of the season, scoring 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting and pulling down 10 rebounds against Southeastern Louisiana. Fortune led the team in rebounding with her 10 boards and it is the fi rst double-double of the Philadelphia, Pa., native s career. She also had a steal and a block in the victory. There has been three other double-doubles this season - two from Roddreka Rogers and one from Aaliyah Whiteside. BLOCK PARTY The Yellow Jackets had quite a block party in the season opener against Loyola Chicago, tallying eight blocks against the Ramblers. Both Vuckovic and sophomore Simina Avram had three blocks apiece. The Yellow Jackets eight blocks were the most by an ACC team on opening night and registered nine vs. Southeastern Louisiana. Tech is averaging 4.5 blocks per game, which is sixth in the ACC and 33rd in the NCAA and Vuckovic leads the team with 1.3 bpg. The sisters will face each other for the fi rst time in their careers on Jan. 7 in Raleigh. Roddreka and Rydeiah s father, Rodney Rogers, played basketball at Wake Forest from and in the NBA for 10 years. The sisters also have a younger brother, Tripple. RODDREKA ROGER S REBOUNDS Junior Roddreka Rogers pulled down a team-high 335 rebounds in , which is fi rst on Georgia Tech s list for most rebounds by a junior. Her 335 rebounds is second on Georgia Tech s single-season list behind Bonnie Tate s 420 rebounds ( ). Rogers averaged 9.9 rebounds per game, 3.8 offensive rebounds per game and 6.0 defensive rebounds per game, which all led the Jackets. During conference play, Rogers averaged a double-double with 10.4 points per game and 10.2 rebounds per game. She was fi fth in the ACC in rebounds per game in conference play. Rogers had 12 double-doubles last season, with eight coming against conference opponents - Clemson (three times), North Carolina (twice), Pittsburgh, NC State and Notre Dame. Her 19 career double-doubles ranked sixth among active players in the ACC last season and fi rst among active players this season. In her career, she has led the Jackets in rebound in 35 games and has done so twice this season. She has 29 career games of grabbing at least 10 rebounds. MORE NEW FACES Coach Joseph welcomed new staff members this season bringing on Rob Norris and Kevin Morrison as assistant coaches. Norris, a 14-year veteran of Division I college basketball, joined the staff after serving as an assistant coach at VCU for the season. Morrison, who has coached out west for eight seasons, joined the Jackets after spending four seasons at Washington as both the associate head coach and assistant coach. Walthour, who is not a new face to the Georgia Tech women s basketball team after playing four years ( ) under Joseph and serving as the graduate manager for two ( ) has been elevated to the assistant director of operations. Brock Berenato, a graduate of Bradley University, joins the staff as the director of video and player personnel after being the graduate manager at VCU last season. Berenato is distantly related to former head coach of the Jackets and ACC Legend, Agnus Berenato. Jonneshia Pineda, a former Yellow Jacket video intern is this year s graduate manager. Pineda played collegiately at Pear River Community college and Georgia Southwestern. IN WEST PHILADELPHIA, BORN AND RAISED Georgia Tech has three players on its roster that hail from Philadelphia - freshmen Ciani Cryor and Martine Fortune and redshirt freshman Erin Garner. 6 Georgia Tech made its eighth appearance in the last nine seasons to the post season, receiving an at-large bid to the WNIT Tournament. The Yellow Jackets advanced to the second round of the WNIT Tournament before falling at Ole Miss. Georgia Tech is now 6-4 overall in the Women s National Invitation Tournament. It was Joseph s eighth trip to the post season and fi rst to the WNIT. She is 7-8 in the post season. HOOSIER STATE The Yellow Jackets will be used to the state of Indiana by the end of the year. Georgia Tech signed head women s basketball coach MaChelle Joseph to a two-year contract extension through the season, Director of Athletics Mike Bobinski announced on Oct. 21, 2014.Joseph has had unprecedented success at the helm of the Yellow Jackets during the past 12 seasons. Joseph is just the second head coach in the Yellow Jacket history to hit 200 career wins and is the all-time winngingest coach at GT.
