Georgia Tech opens ACC play this evening facing No. 2 Notre Dame for the seventh time in program history. Fans can listen live on WREK 91.1/WREK.org or watch on ACC Network Extra. This marks the fifth consecutive season the Yellow Jackets have opened the ACC slate facing a nationally-ranked opponent. 2. Georgia Tech seeks its first win over Notre Dame as the Fighting Irish lead the all-time series 6-0. The first meeting between the squads dates back to The Yellow Jackets have hosted the Irish in Atlanta three times. 3. Georgia Tech pushed its win streak to two consecutive by ending non-conference play with a victory over Princeton Dec. 29. Three Jackets scored in double-figures led by Elo Edeferioka with her second double-double of the season behind 17 points and 10 rebounds. 4. Tech opens the ACC slate facing two of the nation s top 25 teams right out of the gate. First visiting Atlanta is No. 2 Notre Dame before No. 15/17 Duke visits on Thursday. The last time Tech opened the conference slate facing two nationally-ranked foes dates back to when Tech faced No. 4 Duke on Dec. 6 before No. 19/21 FSU Jan Head coach MaChelle Joseph is in her 14th season on The Flats and carries an all-time career record of Joseph is the all-time winningest coach in program history and holds the highest winning percentage in Yellow Jacket history at 61.6 percent. Tech shot just 22.4 percent from the floor in Notre Dame s lowest scoring victory since The Irish scored 34 points in the paint and won the rebounding battle While Tech has lost all six contests between the squads, the games have been relatively close as the Jackets lost three games by 10 points or less. The largest margin of victory for Notre Dame was 15 points in just the second meeting and over the six games, the Irish have defeated the Jackets by an average of 11.0 points. When competing in Atlanta, Notre Dame s largest margin of victory is 12 points and the three wins came by a 9.6 point average. LAST TIME OUT Georgia Tech closed out its non-conference portion of the schedule with a rout over Princeton last week. The Yellow Jackets were led in scoring by three players in double-figures. Elo Edeferioka led all scorers with 17 points and recorded her second double-double of the season with 10 rebounds. Despite trailing on the glass at halftime, Tech won the rebounding battle over the Tigers for the game. Amongst all freshmen in the ACC, Tech has two in the top 10 in scoring in Francesca Pan (1st) and Chanin Scott (9th). Additionally, Scott is the fifth-leading freshmen in rebounding and fourth in both threepoint percentage and steals. PERESSON FROM THREE! Junior Antonia Peresson has attempted 85 three-pointers this season, including 63 straight. The Pordenone, Italy native is 127-of-376 from three-point range in her career which places her ninth in the all-time record book in three-point field goals made, just beating out Metra Walthour ( ) with 125 who is currently on staff with the Jackets. The point guard scored in double-figures in the five straight contests, which included hitting a career-high 20 points in the win over Mizzou. The streak was snapped against App State with Tilford just missing her sixth consecutive double-figure game with nine points. Over the five game stretch that spanned Nov. 25-Dec. 7, Tilford shot 51.1 percent (23-45) from the field, 66.7 percent (6-9) from three-point range and 66.7 percent (24-36) from the free throw line. She averaged 15.2 ppg and 5.2 rpg in the streak. Coach Jo s best record heading into ACC play was 13-1 set in WARM HOMECOMING In three road games this season, Georgia Tech players have had a warm homecoming welcome. Tech s victory at Kennesaw State (11/16) kicked things off for Marietta, Ga., native Zutorya Cook as Tech defeated the Owls While not a trip to Ohio, Tech defeated Dayton in the Bahamas to open the Junkanoo Jam. Graduate student Cha Ron Sweeney hails from Toledo, Ohio, a 150 mile trip to Dayton. Rounding things out in non-conference play, the Jackets visited Middle Tennessee State (12/22) and uprooted the Blue Raiders in a homecoming for sophomore Kaylan Pugh, a native of Memphis, Tenn. GREAT SCOTT! Scott owns six games scoring in double-figures this season after tying her season-high of 13 points against Mercer (12/7) and has played 20+ minutes in the eight straight games (11/20-12/17). Scott scored in double-figures in a four-game streak (12/3-12/17), earning the start in all four. She is currently second on the team in rebounding, averaging 5.0 rpg. SCOTT PICKS UP ACC CO-ROOKIE OF THE WEEK On Monday, Dec. 12, freshman Chanin Scott picked up Georgia Tech s second ACC Rookie of the Week honor as the Charlotte, N.C., native was tabbed Co-Rookie of the Week. Scott helped Tech to a 2-0 week with wins over Mercer and App State, averaging 11.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 1.5 apg and 1.0 spg. With the accolade, it marks the first time since the season Tech has had two freshmen recognized as Rookie of the Week. Francesca Pan earned Rookie of the Week Nov. 28. CONNECTING FROM DOWNTOWN In Georgia Tech s win over Appalachian State on Dec. 11, the Yellow Jackets set a program record, hitting 14 three-pointers in the win. Tech was 14-of-27 from three-point range, fueled DOUBLE TROUBLE In Tech s win over Georgia State, two Yellow Jackets posted double-doubles, marking the first time since Feb. 11, 2016 against Miami two players posted double-doubles in the same game. Both Chanin Scott and Imani Tilford, both starting in their first contests this season, notched their first career double-doubles. Only once last season did two players post a double-double in the same game. On three occasions in two players posted double-doubles in the same contest. REBOUNDING SIGNIFICANCE In Tech s win over Georgia State, the Yellow Jackets pulled down 62 rebounds, winning the battle on the glass by 29. Two players had double-figure rebounds (Scott, Tilford). The last time Tech pulled down 60+ rebounds in a game was against Southeastern Louisiana last season on Nov. 18, 2015, securing 68 boards. Tech s 62 rebounds is tied for highest rebounding total in a game in the ACC. Louisville also pulled down 62 boards in a game against Lafayette. This season, Tech has won the rebounding battle seven times. PAN TABBED ACC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Freshman Francesca Pan picked up her first ACC weekly award on Monday (11/28), earning ACC Rookie of the Week after her performances in the Junkanoo Jam. Pan averaged 20.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 1.5 spg and 1.5 bpg. She shot 50.0 percent from the field and 88.9 percent from the charity stripe. Pan set a career-high in scoring in the first game, pouring in a personal-best 25 points against Dayton. She followed that performance with 15 points against Mizzou. CAPTURING THE TROPHY Competing in the Junkanoo Jam over the Thanksgiving holiday in The Bahamas, Georgia Tech won the Freeport Division title of the tournament. Freshman Francesca Pan was tabbed the Tournament MVP of the division, while Imani Tilford was named All-Tournament. The Jackets won the division with victories over Dayton and Missouri. In Tech s win over Dayton, the Jackets were 32-of-43 from the free throw line. RANKED OPPONENT Tech s last win against a ranked opponent came vs. #16/17 Duke, 71-62, at home during the season. The win broke a 37-game losing streak to Duke. It was the Yellow Jackets first win against a top-25 opponent since the Jackets defeated No. 13/11 North Carolina on Feb. 6, SPRINTING OUT OF THE GATE Georgia Tech recorded its best start to a season at 6-0 since the season when the Yellow Jackets opened the season 8-0. The 6-0 start marked the best start under head coach MaChelle Joseph. Previously, Tech opened the season 5-0 four times under Joseph. SENIOR LEADERSHIP Senior Katarina Vuckovic played in her 100th career contest as a Yellow Jacket against Mizzou in the Junkanoo Jam. Vuckovic is the only four-year member of the Yellow Jackets on the roster. The Serbian native has averaged 5.8 ppg, 4.3rpg, and 22.7 minutes per game in her career. BALANCED OFFENSE Tech is outscoring its opponents by a scoring margin through 13 games and the bench has delivered each time. In Tech s 13 games, the bench has combined for 381 points. Six different players have led the Jackets in scoring in each game in Elo Edeferioka, Zaire O Neil (also tied for one), Francesca Pan (also tied for one), Antonia Peresson, Cha Ron Sweeney and Imani Tilford. SWIPE ALL THE TIME Georgia Tech has swiped 126 steals through 13 games this season for a 9.7 steals per game average. Tech recorded a season-best 16 steals in the season-opener against Samford. In the ACC, Tech is seventh in steals per game with Syracuse leading the conference, averaging 12.8 spg. EXPLOSIVE OFFENSE In Tech s dominating win at Kennesaw State, the Yellow Jackets shot 55.4 percent from the floor, including a 62.5 percent effort in the third quarter. Tech reached 80+ points for the first time this season and saw 45 points come off the bench and 52 points in the paint. The last time GT scored 52+ points in the paint in a game dates back to Dec. 14, 2014 when it scored 54 against Central Arkansas. Tech has scored 80+ points three times now this season. The Yellow Jackets kicked off the Junkanoo Jam scoring 81 points against Dayton in a 13-point victory and scored 81 against App State (12/11). ELO ALL THE TIME Redshirt-junior Elo Edeferioka has made a huge impact in her first playing season as a Yellow Jacket. The Warri, Nigeria native has started all 13 games thus far and is leading the team in rebounding, averaging 6.0 rpg. She has recorded two double-doubles this season against App State (12/11) with 11 points and 10 rebounds and against Princeton (12/29) with 17 points and 10 rebounds. The 17 points against Princeton set a personal-best for the junior at Georgia Tech. NEWCOMERS MAKE IMPACT In Tech s season opener Nov. 11 against Samford, five Yellow Jackets made their first appearance in McCamish Pavilion. Zutorya Cook, Elo Edeferioka, Francesca Pan, Chanin Scott and Cha Ron Sweeney all took the floor as a Yellow Jacket for the first time. Edeferioka, Pan and Sweeney earned starts in the contest. Senior Katarina Vuckovic (Smederevo, Serbia), redshirt-junior Elo Edeferioka (Warri, Nigeria), junior Simina Avram (Brasov, Romania), junior Antonia Peresson (Pordenone, Italy), sophomore Chelsea Guimaraes (Almada, Portugal), freshman Anne Francoise Diouf (Dakar, Senegal), and Francesca Pan (Bassno del Grappa, Italy) are Georgia Tech s seven international student-athletes. This past summer, Tech had two student-athletes representing their home countries on their National Teams. Sophomore Chelsea Guimaraes and freshman Francesca Pan both competed in the 2016 European Championships in July. Guimaraes represented the Portuguese National Team, while Pan was a member of the Italian National Team. Pan, ranked the No. 3 international recruit by ProspectsNation, helped lead Italy to a second-place finish. During the 2015 summer, Peresson represented her home country at the U20 European Championship in Lanzarote, Spain. Edeferioka competed with the Nigerian National Team during the end of September, beginning of October in the Afrobasket for a chance to qualify for the Olympics. The Nigerian national team took third place which secured them a spot in the Olympic Qualifying tournament. Vuckovic, Avram, Guimarares, Gari and Peresson all have had previous playing experience representing their home countries in FIBA European Championships. Graduate transfer Cha Ron Sweeney looks to make a scoring impact on the Yellow Jackets as the Ohio native registered over 1,800 career points in three seasons at Eastern Michigan. In three seasons, Sweeney averaged 17.6 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game in 103 games. Sweeney was tabbed the MAC Freshman of the Year in 2014 and picked up second team All-MAC honors three times. Local native, freshman Zutorya Cook stayed close to home at Tech. The Marietta, Ga., native was named MVP at Osborne High School all four years and was named to the AJC s 2015 AAAAAA All-State Second Team. Also tabbed the 2014 Region Player of the Year, Cook picked up AAAAA AJC All-State First Team honors in 2014 and AJC AAAAA All-State Second Team honors in Cook also ran cross country for three seasons. Fellow freshman, Anne Francoise Diouf attended IMG Academy last season after playing at Liberty Christian Prep in Diouf was ranked as the 15th best post player by ESPN.com when Tech signed the Senegal native. Diouf was named a 2015 McDonald s All-American. Ranked the No. 3 international recruit by ProspectsNation, Francesca Pan arrived to The Flats from Italy. Pan played for the Italian National Team, helping claim the U15 Italian Championship and U17 Italian Championship. In 2015, Pan led Italy to a sixth-place finish at the U18 European Championship and most recently helped Italy to a second-place finish at the U20 European Championship in Chanin Scott came to Tech from Charlotte, N.C. where she helped Myers Park High School to several conference, district and state championships in basketball, volleyball and track. The multi-sport athlete was tabbed the SW4A Conference Player of the Year in Scott picked up first team All-District and first-team All-State honors after helping record second consecutive conference championship and district title last season. SIGNING THE NO. 16 RECRUITING CLASS On signing day, Nov. 9, head coach MaChelle Joseph announced three players signed National Letters of Intent to join the Yellow Jackets next season. Kierra Fletcher, a 5-9 guard from Warren, Mich., is ranked 16th at her position by ProspectsNation. Fletcher helped Warren Cousino to its first-ever state championship last season after scoring 27 points in the season finale. ACC CELEBRATES 40TH ANNIVERSARY This March, the Atlantic Coast Conference will celebrate its 40th anniversary of the ACC Women s Basketball Tournament. In recognition, the league has planned a season-long celebration that includes the 40 ACC Moments that will be highlighted throughout the conference season beginning mid-january. Additionally, the ACC Network will unveil the All-ACC Women s Tournament Team from the last 40 years during this year s event March 1-5. The anniversary team will consist of a five-member first team and five-member second team. Georgia Tech signed head women s basketball coach MaChelle Joseph to a two-year contract extension through the season, as announced on Oct. 21, Joseph has had unprecedented success at the helm of the Yellow Jackets during the past 13 seasons. Joseph is just the second head coach in Yellow Jacket history to hit 200 career wins and is the all-time winngingest coach at GT. Her 61 percent career winning percentage is the highest in Georgia Tech history.
