Georgia Tech opens the 2017 WNIT facing Jacksonville in the first round on Thursday. Tip is slated for 7 p.m. Fans can listen live on WREK 91.1/WREK.org. 2. The Yellow Jackets and Dolphins will meet for just the second time in program history on Thursday. Tech took the lone meeting between the squads back in 2006 in Atlanta, This is Tech s seventh overall appearance in the WNIT and third-straight. Last season, the Jackets reached the second round of the WNIT after defeating Mercer in the first round. Tech fell to Tulane in round two. 4. Francesca Pan capped her freshman season earning ACC Freshman of the Year by both the Blue Ribbon Panel and the ACC head coaches. Additionally, Pan was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team and All-ACC Academic Team. 5. Head coach MaChelle Joseph is in her 14th season on The Flats and carries an all-time career record of Joseph is the all-time winningest coach in program history and holds the highest winning percentage in Yellow Jacket history at 61.4 percent. Tech grabbed the decision led by three players reaching double-figures. Tech shot 47.6 percent for the game and converted 22 Dolphin turnovers into 26 points. LAST TIME OUT The Jackets last competed on March 2 in the second round of the ACC Tournament in Conway, S.C. at the HTC Center against No. 16 Miami. Tech bested Boston College in the first round to complete the sweep over the Eagles in Against Miami, Kaylan Pugh led the Jackets with a game-high 21 points and was one of four to reach double-figure scoring numbers. Pugh was 8-for-12 from the field, but Miami s hot shooting sealed the win for the Hurricanes. Miami shot 63.8 percent from the field for the game and never shot below 47.1 percent in a quarter. In the fourth frame, Miami shot 90.0 percent from the field. Tech shot 45.9 percent from the floor and finished 11-for-21 from the free throw line. TECH IN THE WNIT Georgia Tech is making its seventh overall appearance in the WNIT Thursday night and third-straight. Through the six appearances in the postseason tournament, the Jackets have posted a 7-5 record, including advancing to the second round last season. In 1992, Tech won the NWIT at the Cal Farley Coliseum in Amarillo, Texas. This is the fifth time the Jackets will host a first round game. The berth also marks the 10th postseason appearance in 11 years for Tech. vs Kaylan Pugh led Georgia Tech against Miami with 21 points. There will be six rounds of competition and the championship game will be televised live on CBS Sports Network on Saturday, April 1. Rounds of competition are as follows: Round 1: March Round 2: March Round 3: March Quarterfinals: March Semifinals: March Championship: April 1 A JACKET POSTSEASON Tech s at-large bid to the 2017 WNIT marks the 10th postseason in the past 11 years for the Yellow Jackets. Under the direction of MaChelle Joseph, the Jackets own a 7-9 record in postseason play, including a 2-2 record in the WNIT. Joseph has led the Jackets to seven NCAA Tournaments, including six-straight from Joseph guided the Jackets to their best NCAA postseason effort, reaching the Sweet 16 in Overall as a program, Tech owns a record in postseason. AN ACC POSTSEASON Out of the ACC s 15 league teams, 11 teams have made postseason play. The ACC garnered seven spots in the NCAA Tournament (Duke, Florida State, Louisville, Miami, NC State, Notre Dame and Syracuse). Four teams (GT, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest) earned berths to the WNIT. ACC FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR Francesca Pan became just the second Yellow Jacket in program history to be named the ACC Freshman of the Year (Blue Ribbon Panel and ACC Coaches). The first Jacket was Niesha Butler in Pan was also named to the ACC All-Freshman Team on Tuesday, marking the 11th time a Jacket has been named to the All-Freshman Team and first since Pan became the seventh Jacket under head coach MaChelle Joseph to receive the recognition. Additionally, Pan earned All-ACC Academic honors. CLOSE CALL Georgia Tech has dropped some heart-breaking decisions during the regular season, falling by five points or less in five games, three by one point and three in overtime. The streak started with an overtime loss at Wake Forest (1/22), falling by five points, before the Jackets dropped a one point decision at Clemson (1/29). After falling at Clemson, Tech dropped a one point overtime decision in the next game at Virginia (2/2) before rebounding with a win over Virginia Tech. The winning was short-lived as the Jackets fell in overtime against nationally-ranked NC State (2/9) and then dropped a one point decision at North Carolina (2/16), 88-89, on a desperation three-pointer from the Tar Heels. Tech wrapped up regular season play falling by five points at No. 17 Miami. WHO S ROLLING? Junior point guard Imani Tilford has had a solid string of contests in the past 11 games, scoring in double-figures in nine contests, hitting 15 or more points three times. In the past 11 games, Tilford averaged 11.5 points, 3.6 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 2.5 steals per game, while shooting 40.7 percent from the field and 76.7 percent from the free throw line. THREE TIMES A CHARM...OR FIVE? Freshman Francesca Pan recorded her fifth ACC Rookie of the Week honor on Monday, Feb. 27 to become the first Jacket since Ty Marshall ( ) to earn five Rookie of the Week honors. Pan recorded her fifth accolade averaging 16.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game in Tech s final two regular season outings. After pitching in 12 points against Clemson, Pan posted 21 points at Miami for her fifth 20-plus point outing of the season. She picked up her fourth ACC Rookie of the Week honor on Feb. 20, becoming the first Yellow Jacket since the season to earn four ACC Rookie of the Week honors in a season. On the week, Pan averaged 19.0 ppg, 3.0 rpg and 1.5 apg. She opened the week with 18 points at UNC followed by 20 points against Pittsburgh. On Jan. 16, freshman Francesca Pan picked up her third ACC Rookie of the Week honor and second consecutive. The freshman averaged 14.0 ppg, 3.5 rpg and 3.0 spg, helping Tech to victories at Boston College and against No. 24 Syracuse. Pan earned her second ACC Rookie of the Week on Jan. 10. The Italian native led Georgia Tech against Duke, pitching in 23 points, two under her career-high, and a personal-best nine rebounds. Pan also swiped three steals to match her career-high. Pan picked up her first ACC Rookie of the Week honor on 11/28 following the Junkanoo Jam where she averaged 20.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 1.5 spg and 1.5 bpg. She shot 50.0 percent from the field and 88.9 percent at the charity stripe. She earned MVP of the division after scoring a career-high 25 points against Dayton and 15 against Mizzou. A LITTLE SHY At Notre Dame, freshman Francesca Pan pitched in 24 points to lead the Jackets, falling one point shy of matching her career-high of 25 points set against Dayton in the Junkanoo Jam in November. Pan hit a career-best 10 field goals, going 10-of-25 from the field to reach 24 points. Additionally, the Italian native was 4-of-8 from three-point range. Pan is the leading freshmen scorer in the ACC, averaging 10.6 points per game. Pan has earned the start in 26 of 27 games she has appeared in this season. ON A ROLL In the past 16 games, junior Zaire O Neil has scored in double-figures 12 times, including posting four 20+ points outings. In those 16 games (beginning at Boston College), O Neil averaged 15.0 ppg, 6.3 rpg, shot 48.2 percent from the field, 59.8 percent at the charity stripe and recorded 26 assists and 13 steals. She scored 20+ points in four games during the stretch and averaged 27.4 minutes per game. O Neil just nearly missed a double-figure performance at Notre Dame, finishing with nine points. O Neil recorded her second double-double of the season at North Carolina scoring 16 points and adding 10 rebounds. TILFORD GOES FOR TWO Junior point guard Imani Tilford picked up her second double-double of the season (and her career) against Virginia Tech. The Jacket pitched in 18 points to go along with a career-best 12 rebounds. Tilford recorded her first double-double of the season against Georgia State. O NEIL GOES NATIONAL Junior Zaire O Neil picked up her first ACC weekly honor on Jan. 6, being tabbed the ACC Player of the Week. O Neil averaged 24.5 ppg, 9.5 rpg, 2.5 apg and 1.0 spg in Tech s two games. She posted two 20+ point games opening with 24 points and a career-high 14 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. O Neil followed that with a career-high 25 points in Tech s win over Virginia Tech. Following her ACC Player of the Week accolade, O Neil was named to the #ncaaw Starting Five lineup on Wednesday (2/8). RANKED OPPONENT Tech s last win against a ranked opponent came vs. #24 Syracuse, 75-66, in McCamish Pavilion on Jan. 15, The win marked the first-ever against Syracuse in program history. The last victory over a ranked opponent was on Feb. 26, 2015 over #16/17 Duke, also at home. a semi-finalist for the Wooden Citizenship Cup. The 13th annual cup is awarded to the most outstanding role models among athletes across professional, collegiate and high school levels. This year s professional recipient is Dick Vitale. Last year, Vuckovic was named one of five Division I women s basketball student-athletes to the 2016 Allstate WBCA Good Works Team. REBOUNDING DIFFERENTIAL Georgia Tech pulled down just 21 rebounds at Clemson, marking the lowest rebounding total this season for the Yellow Jackets. Previous to Clemson, Tech s lowest rebounding total was 25 in the opening game of the season against Samford. The Jackets were out-rebounded by 18 for the second time this season - the first coming at Louisville - which is the largest rebounding margin the Jackets recorded this season. It is the third time the Jackets have been out-rebounded by 10 or more in a game. The last time Tech was held to 21 rebounds or less dates back to 21 at Boston College on 2/18/08. COACHING BAREFOOT FOR SAMARITAN S FEET SHOE DRIVE Inspired by one of our own Yellow Jackets, on Jan. 26, Georgia Tech partnered with Samaritan s Feet to host a shoe drive with donations going to Nigeria. Redshirt junior Elo Edeferioka for several years has taken the iniative to collect shoes while in school and bring them home to Warri, Nigeria, donating the shoes to local children that do not have proper footwear. The shoes collected on Jan. 26 will be donated to her hometown of Warri. In conjunction with the Samaritan s Feet Shoe Drive, Georgia Tech head women s basketball coach MaChelle Joseph and Florida State head coach Sue Semrau coached barefoot in support of the Barefoot Coaching initiative on Jan. 26 in McCamish Pavilion. A STRUGGLE FROM THE FIELD In Tech s loss at No. 9/8 Louisville, the Jackets shot just 27.9 percent (17-61) from the field and allowed 90+ points for the second time this season. The Jackets were limited to one field goal in the second quarter for just the second time in program history and scored its lowest total in a quarter with two points in the frame. Tech s 27.9 shooting effort marked the second lowest field goal percentage this season as the Jackets shot 24.1 percent against Notre Dame. OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION In Tech s game against Syracuse, sophomore Kaylan Pugh posted 28 points, the highest offensive output from a Yellow Jacket, at the time, in a single game this season. Last season, Aaliyah Whiteside posted 28+ points three times, including two 30+ point performances. Since Pugh, O Neil scored 28 points against NC State. THE OFFENSIVE GLASS At Miami, Tech pulled down 24 offensive rebounds, marking the eighth time this season the Jackets have secured 20+ offensive boards in a game, including seven ACC contests. The Jackets have secured 15+ offensive rebounds in 21 of 31 contests this season. In the ACC, Tech is second only to Syracuse in offensive rebounds, averaging 16.6 a contest. Nationally the Jackets rank 9th in offensive boards. ON THE RUN In two of Tech s ACC games (Duke, at Boston College), the Jackets recorded 38 steals, a season-high 19 in each contest. The Jackets have recorded 10+ steals in 13 games this season and force 22.2 turnovers on average when recording 10+ steals. While not a trip to Ohio, Tech defeated Dayton in the Bahamas to open the Junkanoo Jam. Graduate student Cha Ron Sweeney hails from Toledo, Ohio, a 150 mile trip to Dayton. Rounding things out in non-conference play, the Jackets visited Middle Tennessee State (12/22) and uprooted the Blue Raiders in a homecoming for sophomore Kaylan Pugh, a native of Memphis, Tenn. GREAT SCOTT! Scott owns seven games scoring in double-figures this season after tying her season-high of 13 points against Mercer (12/7) and played 20+ minutes during an eight straight game stretch (11/20-12/17). Scott scored in double-figures in a four-game streak (12/3-12/17), earning the start in all four. She is currently fourth on the team in rebounding, averaging 4.5 rpg. SCOTT PICKS UP ACC CO-ROOKIE OF THE WEEK On Monday, Dec. 12, freshman Chanin Scott picked up Georgia Tech s second ACC Rookie of the Week honor as the Charlotte, N.C., native was tabbed Co-Rookie of the Week. Scott helped Tech to a 2-0 week with wins over Mercer and App State, averaging 11.5 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 1.5 apg and 1.0 spg. With the accolade, it marks the first time since the season Tech has had two freshmen recognized as Rookie of the Week. Francesca Pan earned Rookie of the Week Nov. 28, Jan. 10 and Jan. 16. CONNECTING FROM DOWNTOWN In Georgia Tech s win over Appalachian State on Dec. 11, the Yellow Jackets set a program record, hitting 14 three-pointers in the win. Tech was 14-of-27 from three-point range, fueled by five treys from both Antonia Peresson and Cha Ron Sweeney. In total, five different Yellow Jackets hit a three-pointer to help set the record. The previous record was 13, hit twice in previous years. Both Chanin Scott and Imani Tilford, both starting in their first contests this season, notched their first career double-doubles. Only once last season did two players post a double-double in the same game. On three occasions in two players posted double-doubles in the same contest. REBOUNDING SIGNIFICANCE In Tech s win over Georgia State, the Yellow Jackets pulled down 62 rebounds, winning the battle on the glass by 29. Two players had double-figure rebounds (Scott, Tilford). The last time Tech pulled down 60+ rebounds in a game was against Southeastern Louisiana last season on Nov. 18, 2015, securing 68 boards. Tech s 62 rebounds is tied for highest rebounding total in a game in the ACC. Louisville also pulled down 62 boards in a game against Lafayette. This season, Tech has won the rebounding battle 18 times. Four times this season the Jackets have pulled down 50+ rebounds, most recently against NC State with 50 boards. 7 GEORGIA TECH WOMEN S BASKETBALL GAME NOTES vs JACKSONVILLE - WNIT - GAME NO. 32 Competing in the Junkanoo Jam over the Thanksgiving holiday in The Bahamas, Georgia Tech won the Freeport Division title of the tournament. Freshman Francesca Pan was tabbed the Tournament MVP of the division, while Imani Tilford was named All-Tournament. The Jackets won the division with victories over Dayton and Missouri. In Tech s win over Dayton, the Jackets were 32-of-43 from the free throw line. Those numbers are the highest free throws made and attempted to date in the ACC. SPRINTING OUT OF THE GATE Georgia Tech recorded its best start to a season at 6-0 since the season when the Yellow Jackets opened the season 8-0. The 6-0 start marked the best start under head coach MaChelle Joseph. Previously, Tech opened the season 5-0 four times under Joseph. SENIOR LEADERSHIP Senior Katarina Vuckovic played in her 100th career contest as a Yellow Jacket against Mizzou in the Junkanoo Jam. Vuckovic is the only four-year member of the Yellow Jackets on the roster. The Serbian native has averaged 5.8 ppg, 4.2 rpg, and 23.2 minutes per game in her 125-game career. EXPLOSIVE OFFENSE In Tech s dominating win at Kennesaw State, the Yellow Jackets shot 55.4 percent from the floor, including a 62.5 percent effort in the third quarter. Tech reached 80+ points for the first time this season and saw 45 points come off the bench and 52 points in the paint. The last time GT scored 52+ points in the paint in a game dates back to Dec. 14, 2014 when it scored 54 against Central Arkansas. Tech has scored 80+ points five times now this season. The Yellow Jackets kicked off the Junkanoo Jam scoring 81 points against Dayton in a 13-point victory, scored 81 against App State (12/11) and poured in 87 points against Virginia Tech (2/5). The Jackets scored 88 points at North Carolina (2/16). ELO ALL THE TIME Redshirt-junior Elo Edeferioka has made a huge impact in her first playing season as a Yellow Jacket. The Warri, Nigeria native has started 30 games thus far and is second on the team in rebounding, averaging 5.3 rpg. She has recorded two double-doubles this season against App State (12/11) with 11 points and 10 rebounds and against Princeton (12/29) with 17 points and 10 rebounds. The 17 points against Princeton set a personal-best for the junior at Georgia Tech. NEWCOMERS MAKE IMPACT In Tech s season opener Nov. 11 against Samford, five Yellow Jackets made their first appearance in McCamish Pavilion. Elo Edeferioka, Francesca Pan, Chanin Scott and Cha Ron Sweeney all took the floor as a Yellow Jacket for the first time. Edeferioka, Pan and Sweeney earned starts in the contest. Pan came alive in the second half, scoring nine points while pulling down three rebounds and a steal. The Italian native finished with 12 points on 3-of-5 shooting from long range. ALL OVER THE WORLD Georgia Tech s roster boasts players from seven different states and six different countries. Senior Katarina Vuckovic (Smederevo, Serbia), redshirt-junior Elo Edeferioka (Warri, Nigeria), junior Simina Avram (Brasov, Romania), junior Antonia Peresson (Pordenone, Italy), sophomore Chelsea Guimaraes (Almada, Portugal), freshman Anne Francoise Diouf (Dakar, Senegal), and Francesca Pan (Bassno del Grappa, Italy) are Georgia Tech s seven international student-athletes. This past summer, Tech had two student-athletes representing their home countries on their National Teams. Sophomore Chelsea Guimaraes and freshman Francesca Pan both competed in the 2016 European Championships in July. Guimaraes represented the Portuguese National Team, while Pan was a member of the Italian National Team. Pan, ranked the No. 3 international recruit by ProspectsNation, helped lead Italy to a second-place finish. During the 2015 summer, Peresson represented her home country at the U20 European Championship in Lanzarote, Spain. Edeferioka competed with the Nigerian National Team during the end of September, beginning of October in the Afrobasket for a chance to qualify for the Olympics. The Nigerian national team took third place which secured them a spot in the Olympic Qualifying tournament. Vuckovic, Avram, Guimarares, Gari and Peresson all have had previous playing experience representing their home countries in FIBA European Championships. NEW FACES, NEW TALENT Georgia Tech blended five new faces into this year s roster as four freshmen joined the team in addition to a transfer. Graduate transfer Cha Ron Sweeney looks to make a scoring impact on the Yellow Jackets as the Ohio native registered over 1,800 career points in three seasons at Eastern Michigan. In three seasons, Sweeney averaged 17.6 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game in 103 games. Sweeney was tabbed the MAC Freshman of the Year in 2014 and picked up second team All-MAC honors three times. Fellow freshman, Anne Francoise Diouf attended IMG Academy last season after playing at Liberty Christian Prep in Diouf was ranked as the 15th best post player by ESPN.com when Tech signed the Senegal native. Diouf was named a 2015 McDonald s All-American. Ranked the No. 3 international recruit by ProspectsNation, Francesca Pan arrived to The Flats from Italy. Pan played for the Italian National Team, helping claim the U15 Italian Championship and U17 Italian Championship. In 2015, Pan led Italy to a sixth-place finish at the U18 European Championship and most recently helped Italy to a second-place finish at the U20 European Championship in Chanin Scott came to Tech from Charlotte, N.C. where she helped Myers Park High School to several conference, district and state championships in basketball, volleyball and track. The multi-sport athlete was tabbed the SW4A Conference Player of the Year in Scott picked up first team All-District and first-team All-State honors after helping record second consecutive conference championship and district title last season. Scott was also named the SW4A Conference Player of the Year in volleyball as a senior and was All-State in track in HOW DO YOU SAY... ACC PREDICTIONS In the ACC Preseason polls, Georgia Tech was picked to finish ninth by the Blue Ribbon Panel and eighth by the head coaches. Notre Dame was the preseason favorite in both polls. SIGNING THE NO. 16 RECRUITING CLASS On signing day, Nov. 9, head coach MaChelle Joseph announced three players signed National Letters of Intent to join the Yellow Jackets next season. Kierra Fletcher, a 5-9 guard from Warren, Mich., is ranked 16th at her position by ProspectsNation. Fletcher helped Warren Cousino to its first-ever state championship last season after scoring 27 points in the season finale. She was a First Team Class A All-State selection in Also joining the Jackets next season, Daijah Jefferson is a 6-2 forward from Hopewell, Va. Jefferson is ranked 8th in her position by ProspectsNation. Taja Cummings is Tech s third recruit for Cummings, a 5-6 point guard from Alpharetta, Ga., helped lead St. Francis High School to two consecutive Georgia High School Association (GHSA) Class A private state championships in 2015 and All Star Girls Basketball Report ranked Cummings as the No. 123 recruit. ACC CELEBRATES 40TH ANNIVERSARY This March, the Atlantic Coast Conference will celebrate its 40th anniversary of the ACC Women s Basketball Tournament. In recognition, the league has planned a season-long celebration that includes the 40 ACC Moments that will be highlighted throughout the conference season beginning mid-january. Additionally, the ACC Network will unveil the All-ACC Women s Tournament Team from the last 40 years during this year s event March 1-5. The anniversary team will consist of a five-member first team and five-member second team. Georgia Tech signed head women s basketball coach MaChelle Joseph to a two-year contract extension through the season, as announced on Oct. 21, Joseph has had unprecedented success at the helm of the Yellow Jackets during the past 13 seasons. Joseph is just the second head coach in Yellow Jacket history to hit 200 career wins and is the all-time winngingest coach at GT. Her 61 percent career winning percentage is the highest in Georgia Tech history.
