Scouting Dartmouth: The Big Green enters the weekend with a 1-3 record on the season after falling to Maine on Tuesday Dartmouth has also lost to Boston College (80-61) and Colgate (65-64, OT) while defeating Cal Davis (66-61). Junior guard Leon Pattman leads the Big Green in scoring with 14.0 points per game, while senior guard Mike Lang is also in double figures at Hofstra vs. Dartmouth Series: Dartmouth holds a 5-2 lead in the all-time series, although Hofstra captured last season s game in Hanover The Big Green swept a home-and-home in and , while the other four meetings came in the 1950 s. Last Year s Meeting (Hofstra 74, Dartmouth 57): Sophomore guard Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) had 20 points, eight rebounds and six assists as the Hofstra Men s Basketball team pulled away from Dartmouth in the second half for a at Leede Arena. With the win, the Pride improved its record to 7-0 on the season, marking Hofstra s best-ever start at the NCAA Division I level, surpassing the 6-0 start of the team. The Pride led by nine points early in the second half, when senior forward Michael Radziejewski (Jackson Heights, NY) converted on a pair of foul shots to give Hofstra a lead. Dartmouth then held the Pride scoreless for more than five minutes, as it pulled back within on a pair of foul shots from guard Mike McLaren with 12:43 remaining. Junior forward Aurimas Kieza (Marijampole, Lithuania) ended the Pride drought with a follow-up dunk at the 12:25 mark, starting a 12-2 run that gave the Pride its first double-digit lead of the game at on a Radziejewski three-pointer from the left corner. Hofstra settled for a halftime lead despite shooting 55 percent from the field (16-29). The Pride used an early 10-0 run to pull ahead on a jumper from freshman guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) with 10:07 left in the first half. However, the Big Green answered behind the hot shooting of reserve guard Mike McLaren, who scored 11 first half points off the bench. McLaren hit his third three-pointer of the half to pull Darmouth within with 6:17 left, and a lay-up from Chuck Flynn evened the score at with 5:28 left. Stokes answered with a jumper to kick-start a 7-0 Hofstra run as the Pride took a lead at intermission. Stokes shook off an early second half injury to finish with a teamhigh 20 points. Agudio finished with 15 points for his seventh straight game in double figures to start his career. Radziejewski added a season-high 14 points off the bench, while junior forward Adrian Uter (Queens, NY) added 10. McLaren led Dartmouth with 18 points in a losing effort. Stokes became the 26th member of the 1,000-Point Club at Hofstra, which improved to 5-2 with the win. The Pride has now won four of its last five games, including three wins over schools from the state of New York (St. John's, Binghamton and Stony Brook). The Pride has also yet to play a game that has been decided by less than 13 points this season. The Seawolves, meanwhile, slipped to 0-6 with the loss. Stokes also fell just two shy of his career high in scoring, which he set with 31 points in the Colonial Athletic Association semifinals against Drexel last year. His career high in the regular season is 30, set in a triple-overtime win over James Madison at Hofstra Arena on February 9, His 10 rebounds were also one shy of his career best of 11, which he set at James Madison as a freshman. The Pride broke open the game early with a 17-0 lead in the first 6:17 of the contest. Junior guard Carlos Rivera (San German, PR) got Hofstra started with a lay-up and a three-pointer, and a pair of foul shots from sophomore guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) capped off the 17-0 run. A jumper by freshman forward Stephane Bakinde got Stony Brook on the board at the 13:20 mark, but Hofstra pushed ahead 26-4 on a threepointer by Stokes for its largest lead of the contest. Stony Brook battled back, though, and pulled within at the break on a pair of foul shots by junior forward Mike Popoko (Baltimore, MD). Hofstra started the second half with an 8-0 run, capped off by two foul shots from Stokes to take a lead. Stony Brook got as close as 12 points with 9:47 left, then pulled within 11 at with 3:26 left, but the Pride was able to maintain its double-digit margin the entire second half. Stokes was joined in double figures by freshman guard Zygis Sestokas (Vilnius, Lithuania) who had a career-best 10 points off the bench. Popoko was the only player in double figures for Stony Brook with 15 points. Hofstra held the Seawolves to only 35.0 percent shooting from the floor, holding its opponents to 36 percent or less for the fifth time this season (all victories).

Home Away From Home: Hofstra is making its return to Madison Square Garden after a three-year absence. The last time it appeared at the World s Most Famous Arena was in December of 2002, when it lost to St. John s Senior Aurimas Kieza (Marijampole, Lithuania) is the only current player to appear in that game, when he scored 12 points in his collegiate debut. Hofstra has had some tremendous success at MSG over the years, tallying a 6-2 record in its last eight appearances. Included in that stretch were consecutive ECAC Holiday Festival titles in 1998 and Hofstra nearly three-peated at the Holiday Festival, but lost in the 2000 title game to Penn State Hofstra At Madison Square Garden : St. John s 84, Hofstra : Hofstra 67, Iona 54 (Marty Glickman Classic) : Penn State 74, Hofstra 71 (Holiday Festival) Hofstra 58, Rutgers 52 (Holiday Festival) : Hofstra 75, Fordham 50 (Holiday Festival) Hofstra 65, Rutgers 59 (Holiday Festival) : Hofstra 67, Pennsylvania 62 (Holiday Festival) Hofstra 61, Georgia Tech 42 (Holiday Festival) : Manhattan 56, Hofstra 55 (Holiday Festival) Georgia Tech 58, Hofstra 47 (Holiday Festival) : Hofstra 83, Hartford 77 Stokes Reaches 1000: Junior guard Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) became the 26 th player in school history to score 1,000 career points when he converted on a fast-break lay-up early in the Pride s win over Stony Brook on Wednesday. He also jumped into 24 th place on the school s all-time list with 1,024 points and needs 83 to break into the top 20. Stokes has a good chance to become only the fifth player in school history to score 2,000 points by the end of his senior season next year. He came into this year with 923 points, and if he duplicated the 549 points that he scored as a sophomore last winter in each of the next two seasons, he would finish with 2,021 points. Agudio averaged 19.0 points over the Pride s three wins, including a career-high tying 22 points in a home win over Delaware on Saturday, Dec. 3. He first reached 22 points in his third career game, a road win over Binghamton last season. He then matched that 22- point total in the semifinals of the 2005 Colonial Athletic Association tournament against Old Dominion. Agudio is no stranger to winning CAA awards, as he was named the CAA Rookie of the Week eight times last year (in 16 weeks), and was also a unanimous selection for the CAA Rookie of the Year Award. Agudio Sets New Three-Point Record: Sophomore guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) entered the 2005 Postseason National Invitation Tournament tied for the school record with 81 three-pointers and broke the mark with a second-half trey against Saint Joseph s. The record of 81 was originally set by Demetrius Dudley in (see chart below). Agudio has also threatened the singlegame school record of seven on numerous occasions, including six in a home win over William & Mary, which tied a freshman record set by teammate Carlos Rivera (San German, PR) in Hofstra Single-Season Three-Point FG Leaders Name Year 3FG 1) Antoine Agudio ) Demetrius Dudley ) Carlos Dicenta ) Rick Apodaca ) Norman Richardson ) Frank Walker ) Jason Hernandez ) John Mavroukas ) Norman Richardson ) Keith McMillan Agudio On Historic Pace: Sophomore guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) is well on his way to becoming one of the most prolific three-point shooters in CAA history. Agudio made a school-record 82 threepointers last season, putting him on an early pace for 328 in his career, which would shatter the school record of 192, held by Norman Richardson ( ). Only four players in CAA history have made 300 three-pointers in a career, led by conference record holder Brett Blizzard of UNC Wilmington (371). The other three former CAA players with 300 treys are Mark Poag of Old Dominion (328), Kent Culuko of James Madison (320) and Phil Goss of Drexel (307). George Mason s Lamar Butler is on pace to join that club this season. In The Blood Lines: Hofstra guards Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) and Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) are not the first members of their families to excel at the Division I college level. Stokes older brother Leonard was a four-year standout at Cincinnati, where he once scored 39 points in an NCAA Tournament game against UCLA and was named second-team All-Conference USA. Agudio s father, Alex, meanwhile, was a key player on Niagara s 1987 NIT team and still holds the school record for steals in a season (77).

A Three-For-All: Only 11 players in Hofstra history have made 100 three-pointers in a career, but that list will become much more crowded in the coming weeks. Three current members of the Pride are within eight treys of reaching the century mark, and all three should be making a move up the career three-point charts all winter long. Senior forward Aurimas Kieza (Marijampole, Lithuania) has 96 three-pointers, junior guard Carlos Rivera (San German, PR) has 93, and sophomore guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) now has 92 after breaking the school single-season record last year with 82. The three players should give the Pride arguably the most potent three-point shooting line-up in its history. Agudio, in fact, is on pace to break the Hofstra three-point record by more than 100 over the course of his four year career. He hit 82 as a freshman last year, which projects to 328 over four seasons, 136 more than the all-time record holder (Norman Richardson with 192). The Pride s three guards are all in double figures, led by junior guard Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) with 14.4 points per game, sophomore guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) with 13.7 points per game and junior guard Carlos Rivera (San German, PR) with 10.4 points per game. Hofstra s two senior forwards are also on the verge of double figures as Aurimas Kieza (Marijampole, Lithuania) is at 8.7 ppg and Adrian Uter (Queens, NY) with 8.3 ppg. Kieza would need 19 points against Dartmouth to move into double figures, while Uter would need 22. Stokes In The CAA: Junior guard Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) ranked in the top 10 in the CAA in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals last season. He finished a close second in the CAA scoring race with 18.3 points per game (0.2 behind Harding Nana of Delaware), while also ranking ninth in rebounding (6.1 rpg), sixth in assists (3.5 apg) and second in steals (1.8 spg). He was one of only three players in the nation who ranked in the top 10 in their conference in all four of those categories last winter, joining Kevin Hamilton of Holy Cross (Patriot League) and David Moss of Indiana State (Missouri Valley Conference). Stokes actually had the CAA scoring lead heading into the Postseason National Invitation Tournament, but Saint Joseph s held him to eight points, dropping him from 18.8 to 18.3 and leaving him just 0.2 ppg behind Nana. If Only They Kept Plus/Minus In Basketball: Senior forward Adrian Uter (Queens, NY) was clearly a key to Hofstra s win over St. John s on Nov. 29. When he picked up his second foul in the first half, the Pride was leading In the last 10 minutes of the half with Uter on the bench, St. John s outscored the Pride Once Uter returned in the second half, it was all Hofstra the rest of the way, as the Pride outscored the Red Storm after the break. Overall, the score was Hofstra with Uter on the floor, and 26-9 St. John s without him. The same pattern showed in the Pride s loss to VCU on Dec. 7. Uter picked up his second foul with the Pride up by three points, and VCU went on a 15-3 run to close out the half with Uter on the bench. Uter s Block Party: Senior forward Adrian Uter (Queens, NY) had a spectacular defensive performance in the Pride s win over Towson last year on Feb. 16, blocking nine shots in 15 minutes. The nine swats fell just one shy of the school record of 10, set by Greg Springfield against New Mexico State in the 1999 Preseason NIT. Uter finished with 60 blocks last year, ranking him third on the Pride s singleseason list (see below). He also now has 73 blocks in two seasons after picking up four in Wednesday s win over Stony Brook, needing only nine more to move into the top five career list at Hofstra despite being a junior college transfer. Hofstra All-Time Single-Season Block Leaders Name Years Blocks 1) David Taylor ) Roberto Gittens ) Adrian Uter ) Greg Springfield ) Charles Minor Defense The Key: So far this season, the Pride s defense has been stingy in all five of its victories, holding its opponents to 36.1 shooting or less in all five of those contests. Overall, the Pride is holding its opponents to 33.9 percent shooting when it wins, including 20.5 percent from three-point territory. In losses, those numbers jump to 46.5 percent from the floor and 49.0 percent from three. Hofstra has also held its opponents below 60 points in four of its five wins, and has now won 61 straight regular season games when allowing fewer than 60 points. Opponent Pts. FG-A Pct. 3FG-A Pct. FIU St. John s Binghamton Delaware Stony Brook Totals Taking Advantage Of Charity: The Hofstra Men s Basketball team had one of its performances at the free throw line in school history in its win over Delaware on Dec. 3. The Pride shot at the charity stripe, for a 95.5 percent effort. That was the best percentage for the program since it shot a perfect at the line against American University of Puerto Rico during the season. Hofstra is shooting at the line in its last three games (83.3 percent), raising its percentage for the year up to.682.

Home, Sweet Home: After defeating Stony Brook on Wednesday, the Pride is now all-time at Hofstra Arena since the building opened on January 2, The Pride is also in its last 87 home games, dating back to the season in the old Physical Fitness Center, where it won its final 16 games before changing venues. Hofstra is also now 18-2 in its last 20 home games, with both of the losses coming right down to the final shot (including a loss to eventual champion Old Dominion last year on Jan. 19). Hofstra Earns Third Straight Win Over St. John s: Junior guard Loren Stokes (Buffalo, NY) had 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists and the Hofstra defense held St. John's to only 11 points in the second half as it pulled away for a win Tuesday, Nov. 29 at Carnesecca Arena. St. John's took its final lead of the game on a putback from junior forward Lamont Hamilton with 8:06 remaining, putting the Red Storm ahead Hofstra, though, did not allow a point the rest of the way as it closed with a 14-0 run. Senior forward Aurimas Kieza (Marijampole, Lithuania) gave Hofstra the lead for good with a floating jumper to make the score Junior guard Carlos Rivera (San German, PR) followed with a fast break lay-up and a jumper from sophomore guard Antoine Agudio (Huntington Station, NY) made it with 3:15 to play. After falling behind at halftime, Hofstra regrouped in the locker room and got back in the game behind Stokes and Agudio, who combined to score the Pride's first 12 points of the second half. From there, the Hofstra defense took control, as St. John s shot only 17.2 percent (5-29) in the second half, including 1-16 from three-point territory. Earning Bragging Rights: St. John s has long been known as the premier college basketball program in the New York metropolitan area, but the Pride has been able to perhaps steal the crown of late. St. John s completely dominated the series in the 1900s, winning all 19 meetings between the schools. Since then, though, the Pride has won four of the last six, including the last three in a row (all by double-digit margins). Hofstra first broke through in December of 2000, when it captured an win at Nassau Coliseum. St. John s bounced back to win the next two meetings, but Hofstra went into Alumni Hall in and came away with an win, the second-worst loss that the Red Storm has ever suffered at the facility. Last year, St. John s visited Hofstra Arena for the first time in 30 years and the Pride captured a win. This year, the Pride returned to the newly-named Carnesecca Arena and captured a road win on Nov. 29. Rare Air: Hofstra s win over St. John s on Tuesday, Nov. 29 was its third straight in the series with the Red Storm, after winning in Jamaica, NY in (81-64) and at Hofstra Arena last year (78-68). The last time a nonconference team defeated St. John s in three straight regular seasons was when Providence pulled the feat from (before the Big East was formed). Ohio State defeated St. John s three years in a row from , but the first of those wins came in the NCAA Tournament. The last Metropolitan New York area team to defeat St. John s in three straight regular seasons was Manhattan with four in a row, all the way back in Rutgers won three straight in the series with St. John s in the late 1970 s, but two of those three wins were in the same season. A Defensive Effort For The Ages: The box score clearly shows that Hofstra s second half defense was a huge factor in its win over St. John s on Nov. 29. The Pride held the Red Storm to only 11 points in the second half, on 5-29 shooting (17.2 percent). In fact, it was the fewest points that Hofstra has allowed in a half during the entire shot clock era (since ). The previous low of 15 points was accomplished three times, most recently in a home game against Vermont in the season. Iron Men: The Pride s dominant second half against St. John s (37-11) on Nov. 29 was made even more impressive by the fact that Hofstra did not make a single substitution after halftime. The Pride s five starters all played all 20 minutes, and allowed the Red Storm to shoot just 5-29 (17.2 percent) after intermission. Getting Better All The Time: The Hofstra Men s Basketball team has improved its CAA record every season since joining the league in , one year after winning an America East Conference championship in the season. That team had seven seniors on it, though, leaving Hofstra without a senior on the entire roster. The Pride s inaugural season in the CAA saw it finish tenth at 5-13 in conference play, although it reached the semifinals of the CAA Tournament. The following year saw the Pride improve to 6-12 in league play (ninth place), while the campaign saw Hofstra surge above.500 to a 10-8 finish, good for fifth place. Last year, the Pride s CAA record jumped to 12-6, tying it for fourth place. Drama At The Arena: Hofstra Arena has been home to some dramatic conference games in recent seasons, including a triple-overtime thriller against James Madison last year. In fact, of the Pride s nine CAA home games last season, four were decided in overtime or by two or fewer points, while five of its nine CAA home games were decided by four points or less. Hofstra led the CAA in rebounding margin in each of its first three seasons in the league (+4.0 in , +6.1 in , +5.5 in ), after also leading the America East Conference the previous year in Since the start of the Tom Pecora era in , Hofstra has been outrebounded only 35 times in 125 games (28.0 percent of the time). Last year the Pride utilized a smaller three-guard line-up and was outrebounded 12 times, the highest total in the last five years, but the Pride still ranked second in the CAA in rebounding margin, just missing its fifth straight conference rebounding title. So far this season, the Pride is once again first in the CAA (+7.0 rpg).

CAA Update: Despite the fact that the calendar is still in December, Colonial Athletic Association play has already gotten into full swing. Washington is on pace to graduate early in December and has a job offer waiting for him in his native Florida (at Pengeo, Inc. in Winter Haven). Washington was one of the team s vocal leaders and served as a defensive stopper off the bench. Without Washington on the roster, the Pride s eight-member bench has only two players with any college experience senior forward Kenny Harris (Bronx, NY) and sophomore guard Jorge Lebron (San German, PR). Up Next: Hofstra is next in action when it travels to face local rival St. Francis (N.Y.) in Brooklyn on Thursday, Dec. 22 for a 7 p.m. start. St. Francis (N.Y.) is Hofstra s oldest Division I rival, with the two teams facing each other in the Pride s inaugural season in HOFSTRA BASKETBALL TRADITION Hofstra University played its first intercollegiate basketball game in 1936 and has an all-time record of over 67 seasons. Hofstra has recorded 37 winning seasons in its history. Hofstra has appeared in eight NCAA Tournaments and two National Invitation Tournaments, including an NIT bid last winter. Hofstra s team, coached by the legendary Butch van Breda Kolff, posted the best record in school history at Hofstra has seen four players, Bill Thieben, Rich Laurel, John Irving and Craig Speedy Claxton, get drafted into the National Basketball Association, and another player, Norman Richardson, play in the NBA after signing as a free agent. The Pride won back-to-back ECAC Holiday Festivals in 1998 and Hofstra won back-to-back America East Conference championships in 2000 and Former guard Rick Apodaca played for his native Puerto Rico in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens.

In a strange coincidence, both losses in that stretch have been in the Postseason NIT, a loss to Saint Joseph s last year and a loss to Rutgers in 1999 the only two NIT appearances in school history. In regular season games, Hofstra has won 61 games in a row when holding opponents below 60 points. Then Again, So Does Offense: The Pride is 28-2 the last 30 times it has scored 80 or more points. In another strange coincidence, both defeats in that stretch have been home losses to Drexel, including an overtime defeat last year on Jan. 8. The Dragons also won at Hofstra in Closing Time: Hofstra is since when leading with 2:00 to play. Remarkably, two of those four losses came in consecutive home games last year, including a Jan. 19 loss to Old Dominion (67-66) and a Jan. 8 loss to Drexel (84-81, OT). Those are the only two losses that the Pride has suffered in its last 18 games at Hofstra Arena. Beyond The Arc: Hofstra has made at least one three-pointer in 265 straight games, dating back to a loss at Boston University in The Pride s streak was in jeopardy against FIU on opening day, but Antoine Agudio finally knocked one down with 8:45 to play in the second half. Working Overtime: Hofstra is 9-1 in its last 10 overtime games, after defeating James Madison in triple overtime last year, the first triple-overtime game in school history. Last season s loss to Drexel was the first overtime loss for the Pride since Starting The Week Off Right: Over the last three seasons, the Pride is a perfect 5-0 when playing on Mondays and is also 4-1 on Tuesdays after defeating St. John s on Tuesday, Nov. 29. Hofstra has at least one Monday game this season (at William & Mary on Feb. 20), although it wouldn t mind if it played two. The CAA Championship game is scheduled for Monday, March 6. Saved By The Buzzer: In the Tom Pecora era, game-winning or game-tying shots have usually gone awry. Over those fourplus seasons, only once has a meaningful buzzer-beater gone in, a game-winning three-pointer from Carlos Rivera against Columbia in Overall, Hofstra (1-9) and opponents (0-10) have combined to shoot 1-19 on buzzer-beaters in the Pecora Era (not counting shots of 30+ feet). In fact, Pecora s first three coaching victories all came when opponents missed at the buzzer. Steal Away: Hofstra had 12 steals in its season-opening win over Florida International, after going 8-0 last year when it had 10 or more steals. The Pride has now won 13 straight games dating back to when reaching double figures in steals. The last exception was a loss at Manhattan in December of 2003, when the Pride had 11 steals, but the Jaspers one-upped them with 12 on their way to a victory.
