It was assumed by many that the leftovers from last year's team would not be dancing in 209, as most major bracketologists left OU out of their preseason brackets. The Sooners were picked to finish eighth in the Big 2 preseason poll (voted on by league coaches) and most national media outlets listed the Sooners as ninth in the 0-team league. u The Sooners assembled one of the toughest strengths of schedule in the nation and entered Selection Sunday with a 9-3 record. Oklahoma was the only school in the country with a win over a team from every major conference (Power Five + Big East) and the only team that didn't play a "Quadrant 4" game all season. OU ended the regular season as the No. 37 team in the NCAA's NET Rankings and held an average opponent NET Ranking of 64 - the second best in the country. u Oklahoma began work on its postseason resume in non-conference play, facing teams from every other major conference and only playing three games in Norman during November and December. The Sooners picked up non-conference victories over teams such as Wofford, Florida, Wisconsin, Dayton, Wichita State, USC, Creighton, Northwestern and Vanderbilt. u The Sooners' dancing chances again looked weak in the middle of February, when Oklahoma dropped five straight Big 2 contests between Jan. 28 and Feb.. OU fought back into the conversation by winning four of its next five games, including victories over then-no. 3 Kansas and bubble teams TCU and Texas. u On Selection Sunday, the Sooners heard their name called in the NCAA Tournament bracket for the sixth time in the last seven years. Oklahoma is one of only three Big 2 schools with at least six NCAA Tournament appearances during that span, joined only by Iowa State and Kansas. OU is one of only 3 major-conference schools that have made six of the last seven NCAA Tournaments. Only five major-conference teams have more appearances in that time frame. u The Sooners made their 32nd NCAA Tournament appearance, including their 27th in the past 36 years. OU's 27 NCAA Tournament appearances since 984 are the ninth most in the nation during that span, behind only Kansas, Duke, North Carolina, Arizona, Connecticut, Kentucky, Michigan State and Syracuse. u Oklahoma opened the NCAA Tournament with one its most dominant postseason performances in program history. The No. 9-seeded Sooners ran past No. 8 Ole Miss, The 23-point win was Oklahoma's largest margin of victory as a lesser seed in its NCAA Tournament history and its third double-digit win over a better seed in the Big Dance. OU's 95 points were its most in an NCAA Tournament game since the Sooners scored 24 against Louisiana Tech in 989. u The Sooners were eliminated from the postseason in the Second Round, as top-seeded Virginia grinded out a 63-5 win. u Oklahoma has won seven of its last tournament games under head coach Lon Kruger. The Sooners' seven NCAA Tournament wins in the last five years are the second most in the Big 2. u OU finished the season with a record of its fifth 20-win campaign in the last seven years. Oklahoma had won 8 games in u Kruger s OU teams have surpassed their win total from each subsequent season in seven of his eight seasons. The only season the Sooners had a worse record than the year before was following a 29-win season and run to Final Four in 206. u Completing his 33rd season as a head coach, Lon Kruger will be honored by the John R. Wooden Award as this year's recipient of the Legends of Coaching Award during the fifth annual ESPN College Basketball Awards on April 2. Kruger has built his career on the foundation of hard work, humility, integrity and service. From becoming the first Division I coach to guide five different schools to the NCAA Tournament to his dedicated work with Coaches vs. Cancer, Kruger has established a reputation as a genuine leader, winning coach and community champion. u Since 20, Kruger has racked up six NCAA Tournament appearances, seven wins in the Big Dance, one Final Four, coached four NBA Draft picks, a national player of the year (Buddy Hield), a national freshman of the year (Trae Young) and was named the 204 AP Big 2 Coach of the Year. With this year's trip to the Big Dance, Kruger guided a team to the NCAA Tournament for the 9th time in his career the 0th most among active head coaches. u Oklahoma's key to victory was sometimes a simple as making shots. Oklahoma was 20- when it held a better shooting percentage than its opponents and 0-2 when the Sooners had a worse shooting percentage (0- when the percentages are equal). The lone loss when OU held a better shooting percentage was a one-point loss to West Virginia in the opening round of the Big 2 Championship. Oklahoma shot.480 (.368 from 3-point range) in its 20 wins and.399 (.32 from deep) in its 3 losses. The Sooners were 4-3 when they shoot above 45 percent. u Three OU players ranked in the top in rebounding in the Big 2: Kristian Doolittle (fourth, 7.), Christian James (ninth, 6.2) and Brady Manek (th, 5.9). TCU is the only other school with multiple players (two) ranked in the top. u Six different Sooners produced at least eight games of double-digit scoring and six OU players had at least one 20-point performance this season.

As the first player to lead the country in scoring and assists, Young drove the Sooners offense to score 84.9 points per game the fifth most of any team last season and the eighth most in program history. The Sooners tempo was the second fastest among major-conference teams with an average possession of only 4.0 seconds. Due to the speed of play and emphasis on free-flowing offense, the Sooners gave up an average of 8.7 points per game on the defensive end. This season, the Sooners focused much more on the defensive side using their athleticism and length to force opponents deep into the shot clock and showing improvement in contesting shots. OU opponents averaged 68.2 points per game and shot 40.6 percent from the field (ranks second in the Big 2, 27th in the nation). u Oklahoma's offense ran primarily through senior guard Christian James during non-conference play (averaged 7.6 points and 6.9 rebounds in non-league games). During Big 2 play, the Sooners worked through junior forward Kristian Doolittle, who was awarded the league's inaugural Most Improved Player award. Doolittle led the Sooners throughout conference play with team-high Big 2 averages of 3.9 points and 7.8 rebounds to go with 2. assists. The forward won the league's inaugural improvement-based honor after averaging only 2.9 points and 4.3 rebounds in and 7.2 points and 5.8 boards during this season's non-conference stretch. An All-Big 2 Third Team selection, Doolittle was the only Big 2 player to average at least 3.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists in league competition this season. u Doolittle was also named to the All-Big 2 Third Team alongside senior guard Christian James while sophomore forward Brady Manek received All-Big 2 Honorable Mention recognition. The official All-Big 2 awards are selected by the league's head coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own players. u Senior guard Christian James was the Sooners leading scorer this season with an average of 4.6 points per game. James entered the season as Oklahoma s top returning scorer, averaging.9 points per game in In 208-9, James scored at least 0 points in all but six contests including eight games of 20 points. James failed to produce a double-double in his first 04 collegiate games but went on to produce at least 0 points and 0 boards in six games after Dec. - the fourth most in the Big 2 this season. u By scoring 20 points on Jan. 6 against Kansas State, James became the 45th Sooner to eclipse,000 points in an Oklahoma uniform (eighth in the Kruger era). James finishes his career ranked 30th on the all-time OU scoring list with,209 career points. James also boasts 59 career rebounds and is just the seventh guard in OU history to produce,000 points and 500 rebounds in a career. His 76 3-pointers are tied for the eighth most in an OU career. u Earning his first all-conference recognition, Brady Manek was named an All-Big 2 Honorable Mention selection. The sophomore forward averaged 2.2 points (second on the team) and 5.9 rebounds (third) while shooting.469 from the field and.358 from behind the arc. u Through two seasons in the Crimson and Cream, Manek has totaled 74 points. He is just the 0th player in OU history to eclipse 700 career points before the end of a sophomore season and the third during the Kruger era. Trae Young scored 876 in just his freshman season alone (207-8) while eventual 206 National Player of the Year Buddy Hield totaled 756 in his first two seasons in Norman. u OU's only scholarship freshman, guard Jamal Bieniemy boasted a season assist/turnover ratio of 2.53, which ranked third in the Big 2 and fourth among major-conference freshmen. Bieniemy was given the starting point guard role on Jan. 9 and went on to average 6.4 points, 4.2 assists, 2.5 rebounds and.5 steals while shooting 40.9 percent from 3-point range after joining the starting lineup. As a team, the Sooners averaged 0. turnovers per game after Bieniemy joined the starting lineup, compared to 3.5 in their first 7 games. The lone Sooner rookie on this year's roster, Bieniemy finishes his season ranked fifth in program history in steals by a freshman (47) and eighth in assists by a freshman (9). u A program-record six members of the Oklahoma men's basketball team were named to the 209 Academic All-Big 2 First Team. The Sooners' academic accomplishment marks just the second time in league history that a school has had six men's basketball players named to the Academic All-Big 2 First Team (Nebraska in 2004). Earning recognition for the Sooners are seniors Patrick Geha, Christian James, Jamuni McNeace and Rashard Odomes along with junior Matt Freeman and sophomore Brady Manek. Freeman and McNeace have earned Academic All-Big 2 honors for three consecutive seasons. LOOKING AHEAD TO NEXT SEASON u Despite losing eight seniors and 59 percent of its scoring, the Sooners have a lot to be excited about for the season. Oklahoma returns three starters and will pair its core with an exciting recruiting class and high-level transfers. Kristian Doolittle and Brady Manek both ranked in OU's top three for points, rebounds and blocks this season while Jamal Bieniemy led the Sooners in both assists and steals. u Lon Kruger has assembled a highly-anticipated 209 recruiting class, which was listed in the top 5 nationally by Rivals and in the top 20 by both ESPN and 247Sports. The class is comprised of three high school seniors all ranked in the top 00 nationally along with two experienced junior college transfers. Making up the signing class are guards De Vion Harmon (Denton, Texas) and Alondes Williams (River Grove, Ill.), forwards Jalen Hill (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Victor Iwuakor (Sulphur Springs, Texas) and center Corbin Merritt (Tallahassee, Fla.). u Next season's Oklahoma roster will also feature junior guard Austin Reaves, who is sitting out the season after transfering from Wichita State. Reaves is a proven shooter and threat from behind the arc, going 54-of-27 (.425) from 3-point range as a sophomore and 28-of-55 (.509) in his freshman year. He led the American Athletic Conference in 3-point percentage during conference play in by shooting at a.45 clip (37-for-82).
