In his second home game, Motuzis had a career-best 29 points on 8 of 16 from the field and 11 of 16 from the line. In his third game, he failed to reach 20 points but did record 16 in the loss. Last season, Sa'eed Nelson posted a pair of 24-point performances against Wagner (11/22/16) and Saint Francis University (11/26/16). In his third game against Western Illinois (11/29/16), Nelson had 12 points. #AUMBB VS. PATRIOT LEAGUE Entering the second season, American has 257 wins against Patriot League foes. He finished with 14 points and even though he shot 4 of 13 from the field, Nelson drove the lane on Gilbeck numerous times and faced a few no call drives. CARRY THE LOAD Sa'eed Nelson took a career-best 22 field goal attempts against UMES. He beat his previous game-best of 21 attempts at Army West Point on Jan. 14, #AUMBB TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS During the Mike Brennan era, the Eagles have had 10 occasions where two players scored 20 or more points each. This season is the first time that two players have done it in back-to-back games. Sa'eed Nelson is the lone player to be part of four different duos to reach the title. The Eagles are 4-9 in games where three or more players finish in double figures. The combination of Sa'eed Nelson, Larry Motuzis and CB Diallo have reached double figures three times. Nelson, Motuzis and Iorio have reached seven times. Against Loyola, Marvin Bragg joined Nelson and Iorio in double figures. Twice this season, at New Hampshire and Lehigh, the Eagles had four players in double figures Nelson, Motuzis, Iorio and Bragg (UNH) and Nelson, Motuzis, Diallo and Bragg (Lehigh). ALL ABOUT THE JACKSONS Sa'eed Nelson scored 20 or more points in five straight games (Wagner - UMES), averaging 22.8 per contest. He has also helped out at the rim with 6.2 rebounds per game with a season-best nine at UMES. IN YOUR HOUSE Motuzis' 26 points in his Bender debut was the best homeopening performance under a Brennan player and the third straight season where a newcomer has scored in double digits Delante Jones (10), Sa'eed Nelson (24). MISSING THE BIG GUY Sophomore center Mark Gasperini is recovering from a concussion sustained before preseason will miss his eighth game at Western Illinois. There is no timetable for his return. Gasperini had 19 double-figure games last season with one double-double at Colgate (1/2/17) where he had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Gasperini began his collegiate career with 14 points at Maryland (11/11/16). The center had a seven-game double figures streak from 11/22 in the home opener against Wagner (11/22) until 12/21 at Villanova. During the span, Gasperini averaged 13.2 points per game. TIPTOE THROUGH SHALLOW WATER Sam Iorio was a highly touted prospect from the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania and showed exactly why he was picked as one of the top newcomers in mid-major basketball. The 6-foot-6 power forward has 24 points and nine rebounds in 37 minutes at Wagner. Iorio added 10 points at New Hampshire with three rebounds and three assists in 26 minutes. MARVIN 'BUFF' BRAGG Marvin Bragg averaged 8.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game over a three game span (UNH, VMI, SFPA). Bragg has a season-best 11 points at New Hampshire. Bragg missed the game at Maryland Eastern Shore and is expected to miss the Western Illinois game. PACK UP THE BUS American started the season with four straight road games and one home game in the opening eight games. The last time AU played this many road games to start a season was in when former head coach Jeff Jones played the first five games away before the home opener on Dec. 5 against George Washington. Before that, Garry Williams played the six of the first seven away from Fort Myer Hall. AMERICAN WELCOMES IONA PREP STAR Mike Brennan has announced that Iona Prep senior Josh Alexander is the teams first National Letter of Intent for the early signing period. Alexander, a 6-foot-8 forward from Carmel, New York, led the Gaels in scoring last season, averaging 13.3 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. As a junior, Alexander was named to the LoHud Super 7 team, All-CHSAA team, Slam Dunk Tournament MVP and is ranked as the third best player in the Hudson Valley. 15 MINUTES OR MORE CAN SAVE YOU Head coach Mike Brennan has been known to run a short bench throughout his tenure at American. However, this year, the Eagles have seen more contributions off the bench. In the first five games, Brennan has found minutes off the bench for Nick Macarchuk, Marvin Bragg and Drew LaMont. Macarchuk has played at least 14 or more minutes in all four games. He played 22 minutes at Wagner and 21 minutes at Kansas State. The Eagles have eight players averaging over 15 minutes played per game. WRONG BOROUGH, BUT FAMILY NAME LIVES ON Nick Macarchuk Jr. played a vital role in the process of college basketball in the Bronx and Long Island (unofficial sixth borough) in the late 1970's until His son, Nick III had his hand in shaping players as an assistant in the Bronx and Westchester. Freshman Nick Macarchuk IV scored a season-best five points in Staten Island against Wagner and second half 3-pointer to tie the game with 9:19 left. Macarchuk has been a tough defender for American and a player coach Brennan likes to use as due to his hustle. SPREAD THE WEALTH Sam Iorio, Sa eed Nelson, Cheikh Diallo and Drew LaMont each finished with five points in the season opener. I WOULD WALK 14,718 MILES Since American s last game at Bender Arena on Feb. 19, 2017, against Holy Cross, the Eagles will have traveled 14,718 miles before returning to its home base to compete on Cassell Court on Nov. 25 against VMI. The Eagles finished last season with three straight road games at Navy, Loyola Maryland and Army West Point collecting road miles. Over the summer, the Eagles traveled to Cains and Sydney, Australia via Dallas and Los Angeles. The combined miles of the trip was 9,756 miles. This season, the Eagles four-game road trip to Kansas State, West Virginia, Wagner and New Hampshire will put the team at 4,245 miles. NO EARLY BIRD SPECIAL American is one four teams to not have a senior on the roster join Kentucky, Holy Cross and Bowling Green. American is also on a list with 13 teams with nine or more underclassmen and one senior or fewer, joining Kentucky (12/0), Auburn (12/1), American (10/0), The Citadel (10/0), Wofford (10/1), Toledo (10/1), Tennessee (10/1), Holy Cross (9/0), Bowling Green (9/0), Kansas State (9/1), Louisiana Tech (9/1), Marquette (9/1), Montana (9/1) and Oklahoma (9/1).
