The Huskies won last season s matchup, 31-21, holding KU to 293 yards of total offense on 76 plays, a 3.9-yard-per-play average. Kutztown is 2-1 on the season after their loss to Slippery Rock. The Golden Bears opened up with victories over St. Anselm and Clarion. The Huskies are coming off of a 17-7 victory over Mercyhurst last Saturday in Erie. LB Anthony Smith won PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week honors for his play, totaling 11 tackles and the first interception of his career. QB Dan Latorre threw for a touchdown and ran for one to lead the BU offense. THE HEAD COACHES: Huskies coach Danny Hale (West Chester 68) is in his 17th year on the Bloomsburg sideline, racking up a (.750) record. The 139 wins are first all-time in school history. For his career, Hale is and his winning percentage of.751 is ranked among the top 10 active coaches in Division II. Hale has led BU to six playoff appearances, including the latest in He has been honored as the PSAC East Coach of the Year 10 times, the AFCA Regional Coach of the Year nine times, and was named the AFCA National Coach of the Year following the 2000 season. Raymond Monica (North Alabama 90) entered his fourth season with the Bears in 2009 with an overall record of 14-18, while carrying an 8-10 PSAC East record. Monica has led the Golden Bears to improving records each year, going 5-6 in 2008 with a 4-3 PSAC East record - tying KU s single-season record for wins in a division. Prior to Kutztown, Monica served as the defensive coordinator at Temple for eight seasons, including the final seven as assistant head coach. PSAC DEFENSIVE POW: Senior LB Anthony Smith earnsed his second East Defensive Player of the Week award in three weeks after keying another dominant defensive performance by Bloomsburg in the Huskies 17-7 win over Mercyhurst. Smith made 11 tackles, his second game in three with double digit tackles and seven of which were solo stops, and had a key interception that set up a Bloomsburg touchdown late in the first half. His pick, the first of his career, came after the Huskies had gone up 3-0 with two minutes left in the first half. He returned it 15 yards to the Laker 23-yardline to set up a Huskies TD to put them up 10-0 at the half and what would eventually be the difference in the game. Smith also had a pass break up. BEASTS OF THE EAST: Dating back to 2005, the Huskies own a 26-3 record against PSAC East foes. During that span, BU is 13-2 against the East at home and 13-1 away from Redman Stadium. 21 of the 26 wins have come while ranked in the top 25. ROAD WARRIORS: BU has enjoyed much success on the road as of late. He had a career-high 174 yards on 26 carries against St. Anselm, including a 77-yard TD in the 4th quarter. QB Shane Martin is eighth in the conference in total yards per game with (130.0 pass; 51.7 rush) and is completing 57.6 percent of his passes. WR Chris McCormick, a freshman, leads KU with 12 catches for 133 yards and one TD. The Golden Bears are second in the conference in time of possession, holding on to the ball an average of 33:31 per game. KU s defense is giving up just 15.3 points per game, good enough for third in the PSAC. LB Joel Irwin is tied for third in the PSAC with 30 tackles, while DE Kevin Bolinsky leads the team with 5.5 tackles-for-loss and 1.5 sacks. The Golden Bears are giving up just 81.0 yards per game on the ground, which leads the conference and is tied for 18th in Division II. In the secondary, DBs Jay McNight, Mike Gardier and Kalief Evans have combined for 50 tackles, four pass breakups and two fumble recoveries in KU s defense. Matt Dineen handles extra points, field goals and punts and is currently fourth in the PSAC in scoring with 7.3 points per game. Kendall Coleman returns both kickoffs (27.0 avg.) and punts (9.0 avg.), ranking near the top of the PSAC in both categories. Post 1 p.m. Nov. 7 IUP 1:05 p.m. LAST MEETING Bloomsburg 31, Kutztown 21 September 20, 2008 BLOOMSBURG-- Quarterback Dan Latorre threw for 210 yards and two touchdowns to lead the 10th-ranked Bloomsburg University Huskies (4-0, 1-0 PSAC East) to a win over Kutztown University (1-3, 0-1 PSAC East) on Saturday. Kutztown took the early lead in the game when Matt Dineen connected on a 37-yard field goal with 1:22 left in the first period. Bloomsburg then scored on the ensuing drive when Jon Koenig hit a 35-yard field goal. Kutztown regained the lead later in the period when Shane Martin hit Kaleb Klosky with a 15-yard scoring pass with 3:25 left in the half. The Huskies needed just three plays to tie the score as Latorre hit Kyle Ream with a 55-yard pass to make it at the half. In the third period the Huskies took the lead for the first time in the game. Latorre and Ream clicked on the first play of the drive on a 28-yard scoring strike for a lead. Kutztown cut in the Huskies lead with a 34-yard field goal on the Golden Bears next possession, but BU responded with a seven play, 63-yard scoring drive to extend its lead. A touchdown run by Kenny Domzalski from seven yards out gave BU a lead. The Golden Bears got one more score as Martin hit Jason Uhlig on a two-yard scoring pass with 1:47 to play in the game, then added a two-point conversion pass to close to within a field goal at Following a failed KU onside kick, the Huskies drove in for one last score with Derrick Price going in from nine yards out with 1:16 left in the game. Overall, Latorre was for 210 yards, one interception and two scores. Price was held below100-yards for the first time this season as he finished with 60 yards on the ground. Defensively, Greg Myers had 10 tackles, while Earl McNeil added seven. 4 WINNING WHEN THEY RE RANKED: Bloomsburg has flexed its muscles when ranked in the top 25, posting a overall record since The Huskies are when ranked in the regular season and while on the road. IN THE TOP 10: The Huskies are no stranger to a top-10 national ranking. Since 2001, BU has played 37 times while ranked in the top 10 of a national poll, five of those during the playoffs. One of the best players to ever wear a Husky uniform, Latorre, who was named first team All-PSAC East last year, heads into the 2009 season third all-time in school history in both yards passing and touchdowns and is the all-time leader in rushing yards by a quarterback. MR. EVERYTHING: Latorre is featured in the latest edition of Bloomsburg: The University Magazine. The story, written by Husky play-by-play commentator Jim Doyle, details Latorre s athletic and academic accomplishments. His 545 rushing yards last season was a record for a BU quarterback and with his 191 yards during 2007, he is closing in on 1,000 career rushing yards. After netting 48 yards in the win over Mercyhurst, Latorre currently stands at 811 yards. 5 GETTING A GRAND: With his game-high 86 yards in the win over Mercyhurst, sophomore TB Kenny Domzalski went over 1,000 rushing yards in his career. In his freshman year of 2008, he ran for 878 yards, good for second on the team. So far this season, Domzalski leads the Huskies with 182 yards on 55 carries. He now has 1,060 career rushing yards, which is 15th all-time at BU. SPREADING IT OUT: The Huskies have relied on several players to catch passes during their first three games of BU s 40 total completions have been spread out among nine different receivers. Junior TE Ben Weaber leads the Huskies with nine catches; Senior WR Jordan Weisman and junior WR Cory Stiger and each have seven; Junior WR Chris Tressler, sophomore WR Branden Wright and Kenny Domzalski each have four; Senior FB Stefan Adams and sophomore TE Dylan Manni have two receptions apiece; And senior RB James Sweeting has one reception. HITTING 100: Stefan Adams rushed for 104 yards on 15 carries against Ashland, including a key 46-yard run in the 4th quarter. It was the second time in his career that he has broken the 100-yard mark and was just seven yards shy of his career-high. In 2007 against Clarion, the fullback ran for 111 yards and two TDs in a win. WEARING EM DOWN: The Huskies relied on successful 4th quarter running performances to wear down opponents and help gain victories over Ashland and Cal. Against the Eagles, Adams ran nine times for 85 yards in the 4th, helping BU hold the ball for 9:12. Sophomore TB Kenny Domzalski had 47 of his team-high 68 yards in the final quarter against Cal, including a 25-yard jont on a key 3rd down. KEEPIN IT LOW: The 44 points scored in the first 3 games by the Huskies is their lowest total since 1994 when they lost two of three while scoring 36. It is the least amount scored while winning the first three games since 1948, when Bloomsburg scored 38 without allowing a point. NATIONALLY RANKED DEFENSE: The Huskies defense has dominated opponents this season, giving up just eight points per game, which ranks fourth in all of Division II. The total yards given up by BU ranks 15th in DII, and also rank 21st and 27th in rushing (86.0 ypg) and passing (148.3 ypg) defense. Junior Thomas McFarland is sixth on the Huskies in tackles with 15, recording eight with one tackle-for-loss against Mercyhurst on Saturday. THE DBs: The BU defensive backs have helped the Huskies limit their first three opponents to passing yards per game. Junior Alex Landis leads all Husky defensive backs with 17 tackles, including 0.5 tackle-for-loss. He has also posted an interception, two pass breakups and a forced fumble. 6 Senior Jesse Cooper registered his first interception of the season against Mercyhurst last week and added four tackles, helping the defense hold the Lakers to 130 passing yards. Senior Domenique Price had the second pick of his career last week, and has chipped in with 12 tackles, one tackle-for-loss and two pass breakups this season. Junior Dan Oliver and sophomores Vince Browning and Andrew Flogel have also received playing time, combining for 10 tackles, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery. DOMINATING D-LINE: Senior Justin Presley leads the PSAC and is second in Division II with six sacks through three weeks of action. His seven tackles-forloss also is tops in the PSAC and is tied for ninth in all of Division II. Presley has teamed with fellow senior Alphonso Nathan and junior Dave Huot to provide the defense with a constant pass rush and tackles behind the line of scrimmage. POSITIVE RETURNS: Jesse Cooper, an All-PSAC defensive back, has flashed his ability in the return game in Cooper returned the opening kickoffs against Ashland and Mercyhurst 42 and 44 yards, respectively. He also returned three punts for 49 yards, including a 28-yard return late in the 4th quarter, against Ashland. He entered his final season with 146, 33 behind all-time leader Alex Walsh (179) of West Chester. Koenig sits four behind two players who are tied at 155. JUST FOR KICKS: After going 2-for-2 on extra points against Mercyhurst on Saturday, Koenig has extended his streak of consecutive made point-after kicks to 69. His streak started against Cheyney in 2007 and extended through 2008 when he connected on 54-of-54 kicks. Koenig established a new career-long with a 47-yard field goal against Mercyhurst. The kick came with two minutes left in the second quarter and put the Huskies up 3-0. This came one week after equaling his previous career-long, a 42-yarder against Cal early in the 2nd quarter. That kick equaled his careerlong, which he established in 2006 against Northwest Missouri in the NCAA semi-finals and tied in 2008 against C.W. Post. In other words, he routinely makes the returner field the kick inside their own 6-yard line. Shannon also recorded his first career tackle, a touchdown saving stop in the 4th quarter against Cal. TB Brandon Real saw his first collegiate action earlier this year against Cal, carrying the ball eight times for 19 yards, including a 12-yard run on the Huskies first scoring drive early in the 2nd quarter. WR Kyle Fisher has played in two games this year for BU, making his mark on special teams. Fisher has three tackles this season, including two against Cal on kick coverage. FROM THE ARCHIVES: The Huskies have now won three consecutive games to start the season for the fourth time under Danny Hale but only the sixth time in the last 36 seasons. In 111 previous seasons Bloomsburg has started out with a 3-0 record 22 times, resulting in 20 winning years, only one losing season (1973), and one.500 record (1909). The Mercyhurst win was the tenth consecutive road victory for the Huskies, and extends their school record which was set last year at Gannon. The previous record had been seven straight, first set from under head coach Robert Redman. It was then tied several times, most recently from In the 53 games since the start of the 2005 season, BU s record is 45-8, with a very consistent mark of 21-4 at home and 24-4 away. The 16 consecutive times the Huskies have beaten Kutztown is their second longest streak ever against a single opponent, behind the still active 19 game streak versus Cheyney. 12 Danny Hale Bloomsburg University Head Coach Danny Hale, one of the winningest coaches in all of Division II, will begin his 17th season at the helm of the Huskies in Hale also spent five years as head coach at West Chester University. At Bloomsburg, Hale has posted a career record of (.750) and holds the school record for most coaching victories. Overall in 21 years as a head coach he has a mark of (.751) and is ranked among the top 10 active coaches in NCAA Division II in winning percentage. In his 16 seasons as head coach at Bloomsburg he has led the Huskies to 10 outright or shared Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division titles and six NCAA post-season playoff berths. In the period from 2000 to 2008 the Huskies are also one of the most successful NCAA Division II programs with a combined record of (.792). In 2008 the Huskies started the season winning the first nine games of the year, including wins over nationally-ranked Ashland and California (Pa). Bloomsburg earned a bid to the NCAA Division II playoffs for the sixth time overall, and fifth time this decade, reaching the NCAA Region One finals. In 2006, the Huskies posted a mark of 12-2 and won the PSAC Eastern Division title, while also capturing the NCAA Northeast Regional title and advancing to the NCAA Division II national semi-finals. Hale was named the PSAC East Coach of the Year, the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II District I Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year award. By virtue of being a finalist for the award he was featured on an ABC- TV special hosted by Keith Jackson. In 2005, Hale led the Huskies to a record of 11-1, including an unbeaten (11-0) mark in the regular season. It was just the fourth time in school history that a Bloomsburg team went through the regular season without a loss. He also earned PSAC Eastern Division Coach of the Year honors and the AFCA District One Coach of the Year award. The Huskies have reached the NCAA playoffs in 1996, 2000 and 2001 seasons.
