It was the first shutout for the Huskies since After a scoreless first period, Bloomsburg got on the board when Latorre threw a short pass to Kenny Domzalski who took it 43 yards for a touchdown. The Huskies second score was set up by Ochs who sacked Laker quarterback Garrett Kensy and forced a fumble and recovered the ball on the play to give Bloomsburg the ball at its own 44-yard line. Three plays later Latorre ran two yards for a touchdown giving the Huskies a 14-0 lead at halftime. In the second half, Ochs sacked Kensy for a seven-yard loss ending a Mercyhurst drive and giving Bloomsburg the ball at the Huskies 46 yard line. Eight plays later, Jon Koenig hit a 38-yard field goal for a 17-0 lead. Bloomsburg s final score came in the fourth period when Latorre faked a handoff and kept the ball for a 15-yard touchdown run. Mercyhurst was driving late in the game to get on the board and avoid the shutout when Ochs sacked backup quarterback Cody Ladutko forcing another fumble that was eventually recovered by the Huskies ending the threat. Latorre finished nine of 17 for 156 yards and a touchdown through the air and netted a loss of one yard on the ground with his two touchdowns. Ochs finished with six tackles, four of them for losses and three of them sacks for losses totaling 32 yards. As a team the Huskies gained 490 yards of offense to just 222 for Mercyhurst. His 545 rushing yards last season was a record for a BU quarterback and with his 191 yards during 2007, he is closing in on 1,000 career rushing yards. After netting 10 yards in the win over Cal, Latorre currently stands at 763 yards. SPREADING IT OUT: The Huskies have relied on several players to catch passes during their first two games of BU s 28 total completions have been spread out among eight different receivers. Senior WR Jordan Weisman and junior TE Ben Weaber lead the Huskies with seven catches apiece; Junior WR Cory Stiger and sophomore WR Branden Wright each have four; Senior FB Stefan Adams and junior WR Chris Tressler have two receptions; And senior RB James Sweeting and sophomore TE Dylan Manni each have one catch. KEEPIN IT LOW: The last time BU scored so few points to open the season was in 1999 when the Huskies scored 28 through two games on their way to a 5-6 season. So far this season the Huskies have scored 27 and are 2-0. HITTING 100: Stefan Adams rushed for 104 yards on 15 carries against Ashland, including a key 46-yard run in the 4th quarter. It was the second time in his career that he has broken the 100-yard mark and was just seven yards shy of his career-high. In 2007 against Clarion, the fullback ran for 111 yards and two TDs in a win. WEARING EM DOWN: The Huskies have relied on their successful 4th quarter running game to wear down opponents and help propel them to a 2-0 start. Against Ashland, Adams ran nine times for 85 yards in the 4th, helping BU hold the ball for 9:12. Sophomore TB Kenny Domzalski had 47 of his team-high 68 yards in the final quarter against Cal, including a 25-yard jont on a key 3rd down. 5 THE D-LINE: Senior Justin Presley registered another dominating performance against the Vulcans, posting seven tackles, including three tackles-for-loss and two sacks. This came after eight tackles and three sacks against the Ashland offense on opening night. In addition to Presley, junior Dave Huot added constant disruption with three tackles-for-loss against the Vulcans. Senior Alphonso Nathan and juniors Todd Givler and Marcus Zimmerman have also been threats on opposing offenses, combining for 10 tackles, 3.5 tackles-for-loss, 2.5 sacks and a fumble recovery so far in THE DBs: The BU defensive backs have helped the Huskies limit Ashland and Cal to a combined 315 passing yards. Sophomore Oscar Rivera has posted 12 tackles, including one tackle-for-loss, one interception and one pass breakup. Senior Jesse Cooper and junior Alex Landis each registered seven stops against the Vulcans, while Landis came up with an interception in the first quarter on Saturday night. Sophomore Vince Browning came up with a turnover when he recovered a fumble forced by fellow sophomore Andrew Flogel on the opening kickoff of the third quarter against Ashland, while senior Domenique Price and junior Dan Oliver have added several key tackles and pass breakups in the Huskies first two games this season. KEEPIN IT LOW II: The BU defense has allowed just 17 points through two games. The last time BU allowed less than 20 points through two games was in 1997 when the Huskies gave up 18 in two games (a shutout in game one and 18 points in game two) and went on to finish 8-2. POSITIVE RETURNS: Jesse Cooper, an All-PSAC defensive back, has flashed his ability in the return game in Cooper returned the opening kickoff against Ashland 42 yards to the Eagles 40, giving the Huskies great field position on their first drive. He also returned three punts for 49 yards, including a 28-yard return late in the 4th quarter. Against Cal, the Vulcans twice angled their kickoffs away from Cooper, as he returned just one kick for 22 yards last week. JUST FOR KICKS: After going 2-for-2 on extra points against Cal on Saturday night, senior Jon Koenig has extended his streak of consecutive made point-after kicks to 67. His streak started against Cheyney in 2007 and extended through 2008 when he connected on 54-of- 54 kicks. Koenig connected on his only field goal attempt against the Vulcans, a 42-yarder early in the 2nd quarter. The kick equaled his career-long, which he established in 2006 against Northwest Missouri in the NCAA semi-finals and tied in 2008 against C.W. Post. THE FRESHMAN: Kicker Jared Shannon has been one of a few true freshman getting playing time for the Huskies in Shannon handles BU s kickoffs and ranks first in the PSAC in kickoff average at 64.6 yards. In other words, he routinely makes the returner field the kick inside their own 6-yard line. PSAC DEFENSIVE POW: Senior LB Anthony Smith received PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week honors for his outstanding play vs. Ashland on August 27. Smith recorded a career-high 11 tackles, including 0.5 tackles-for-loss, and led the charge on a goal line stand in the 2nd quarter. Ashland, which averaged over 37 points per game in 08, was able to muster just 261 yards and 7 points against Smith and the rest of the Husky defense. FROM THE ARCHIVES: The Cal win was the ninth consecutive road victory for the Huskies, and extends their school record which was set last year at Gannon. The previous record had been seven straight, first set from under head coach Robert Redman. It was then tied 2009 Game-By-Game Statistics Bloomsburg RUSHING PASSING TOTAL OFFENSE Att. The two wins by only 10 points marks the first time since 1986 that Bloomsburg has won the first two games by such a small margin. That year it was also 10 total points: over Shippensburg and over Lock Haven. BU has now won two consecutive games to start the season for the fourth time under Danny Hale, the first three in 2001, 2005 and Winning the first two games has been a good omen for the Huskies in terms of their success during the rest of the season. In 111 previous seasons Bloomsburg has started out with a 2-0 record 28 times, resulting in 25 winning years, only one losing season (1973), and two even records (1909 and 1961). When Bloomsburg blanked Mercyhurst 24-0 last year it was the first time since 1960 the Huskies had shutout a first-time PSAC opponent. That year they defeated Cheyney A FAMILY AFFAIR: Huskies sophomore FB Matt Cox comes from a family of fullbacks. His father, Lawrence, played at Temple from ; his older brother Mike played collegiately at Georgia Tech from and is currently in his second year with the Kansas City Chiefs; and younger brother Lucas is a junior at Georgia Tech.
