Post Pioneers. Last year, the Huskies defeated C.W. Post 13-6, on the strength of a defense that allowed just 86 yards through the air and forced four turnovers. The Pioneers are 1-3 in 2009 after defeating Cheyney 51-0 last week. The Huskies are playing their first home game since the season opening victory over nationally-ranked Ashland. BU went 3-0 on its road trip, including a victory over Kutztown last week in the conference opener. Sophomore RB Derrick Price had 156 all-purpose yards and two rushing touchdowns to lead the way for the offense. Senior K/P Jon Koenig went 4-for-4 on extra points and nailed a career-long 50-yard field goal for the Huskies. THE HEAD COACHES: Huskies coach Danny Hale (West Chester 68) is in his 17th year on the Bloomsburg sideline, racking up a (.751) record. The 140 wins are first all-time in school history. For his career, Hale is and his winning percentage of.752 is ranked among the top 10 active coaches in Division II. Hale has led BU to six playoff appearances, including the latest in He has been honored as the PSAC East Coach of the Year 10 times, the AFCA Regional Coach of the Year nine times, and was named the AFCA National Coach of the Year following the 2000 season. Bryan Collins (St. John s 87) has led the Pioneers from the sideline since 1998, compiling an overall record. Under Collins direction, C.W. Post won three Northeast-10 Conference championships and have been to the NCAA Division II playoffs three times. In 2008 the Pioneers became associate members of the PSAC and posted a 3-8 overall record, 2-5 in the conference. Also the school s athletic director, Collins was the Pioneers defensive coordinator from TEAM OF THE DECADE: From , the Huskies have been the most dominant team in the PSAC, boasting an overall record of (.800). So far this decade, Bloomsburg has made the playoffs five times and has a conference record of 49-6 (.891). BEASTS OF THE EAST: Dating back to 2005, the Huskies own a 27-3 record against PSAC East foes. Post 6-3 1/2 260 SCOUTING C.W. POST: The Pioneers offense is led by QB Eric Anderwkavich, who is seventh in the PSAC with yards of total offense per game. Anderwkavich passed for 127 yards and four touchdowns last week against Cheyney. He ll be joined in the backfield by RB Thomas Beverly, whose 85.5 rushing yards per game is sixth in the conference. The freshman leads the team in scoring with three touchdowns. The top targets for the C.W. Post will be WRs Chris Harris and Andrew Kell, who have combined for 34 receptions for 376 yards and four touchdowns in WR Darnal Williams had 41 yards receiving and two touchdowns last week against the Wolves. Defensively, the Pioneers will feature last week s PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week in LB Tayrance Smith. Against Cheyney, Smith record eight tackles, two tackles-for-loss, and a 70-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown. LB Peter Manns, 13th in the PSAC in tackles per game with 8.0, joins Smith on defense. DE Xavier Brown will also look to cause problems, as he leads the Pioneers with 5.0 sacks and 5.0 tackles-for-loss so far this year. Jon Korn and Justin Bertone have both handled field goal and extra point duties for C.W. Post, while Grayson Laurino has averaged 34.3 yards per punt. Post 6 September 27, 2008 BROOKVILLE, NY-- Dan Latorre passed for 133 yards and one score to lead Bloomsburg University to a 13-6 win over C.W. Post on Saturday in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action. The Huskies (5-0, 2-0 PSAC East) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter scoring on their first drive of the game. Taking on its own 33-yard line, Bloomsburg drove to the C.W. Post (1-4, 1-1 PSAC East) 25-yard line before the drive stalled. Jon Koenig then connected on a 42-yard field goal putting the visitors in front. Bloomsburg made it 10-0 with just 36 seconds left before halftime when Latorre hit Kyle Ream with a 12-yard pass for a 10-0 advantage. C.W. Post got on the board in the third period putting together a nine-play, 64-yard scoring drive with Jason Gwaltney going in from nine-yards out. The extra point though failed and the Pioneers trailed by a score of In the fourth period, the Huskies added to their lead when Koenig hit his second field goal of the day, this one from 30-yards out for a 13-6 lead with 8:56 to go. The Pioneers started the ensuing drive on the Bloomsburg 47-yard line after a good kickoff return and a personal foul on the Huskies. On third and eight from the 45-yard line yard, C.W. Post quarterback Nick Georgetti threw a long pass towards the end zone that was broken up at the last second by Alex Landis. The breakup prevented what could have been the tying score. After the Huskies got the ball back and took more than five minutes off the clock, the drive stalled giving the Pioneers one more shot. But, on a third and three from the C.W. Post 42-yard line, the Huskies Andre Ellis intercepted a Georgetti pass giving Bloomsburg the win. Latorre finished the game for 133 yards and the one touchdown, while tailback Derrick Price rushed for 89 yards. Defensively, Greg Myers had eight tackles to lead Bloomsburg. Bloomsburg C.W. One of the best players to ever wear a Husky uniform, Latorre, who was named first team All-PSAC East last year, heads into the 2009 season third all-time in school history in both yards passing and touchdowns and is the all-time leader in rushing yards by a quarterback. MR. EVERYTHING: Latorre is featured in the latest edition of Bloomsburg: The University Magazine. The story, written by Husky play-by-play commentator Jim Doyle, details Latorre s athletic and academic accomplishments. His 545 rushing yards last season was a record for a BU quarterback and with his 191 yards during 2007, he is closing in on 1,000 career rushing yards. After netting negative 19 yards in the win over Kutztown, Latorre currently stands at 792 yards. GETTING A GRAND: With his game-high 86 yards in the win over Mercyhurst, sophomore TB Kenny Domzalski went over 1,000 rushing yards in his career. In his freshman year of 2008, he ran for 878 yards, good for second on the team. So far this season, Domzalski leads the Huskies with 217 yards on 64 carries. He now has 1,095 career rushing yards, which is 15th all-time at BU. HITTING 100: Sophomore TB Derrick Price, in his first action of the season, rushed 20 times for 105 yards and two touchdowns last Saturday night at Kutztown. It was the eighth time in his college career that Price has broken the 100-yard barrier. Senior FB Stefan Adams is the only other Husky to run for 100 yards in a game this season when he rushed for 104 yards on 15 carries against Ashland in the season opener. 5 WEARING EM DOWN: The Huskies have relied on successful 4th quarter running performances to wear down opponents and help gain victories over Ashland, Cal and Kutztown. Against the Golden Bears, BU rushers gained 71 yards on 12 carries in the final stanza. Derrick Price totaled 50 yards on five carries, including a 29-yard touchdown run with 5:39 remaining. Stefan Adams ran nine times for 85 yards in the 4th against Ashland, helping BU hold the ball for 9:12. Kenny Domzalski had 47 of his team-high 68 yards in the final quarter against Cal, including a 25-yard jont on a key 3rd down. SPREADING IT OUT: The Huskies have relied on several players to catch passes during their first four games of BU s 56 total completions have been spread out among 10 different receivers: Four wide receivers, four running backs and two tight ends. Junior WR Chris Tressler has been the main beneficiary of those deep balls, recording a 47-yarder against Cal, a 41-yarder against Meryhurst, and another 47-yard pass last week against Kutztown. Senior WR Jordan Weisman has been on the receiving end of the other two 40-plus plays, catching a 40-yarder in the opener against Ashland and a 56-yarder against Kutztown. 1ST HALF DOMINANCE: The field goal by Kutztown in the second quarter last Saturday was the first points given up by the Huskies in the first half of any game this year. NATIONALLY RANKED DEFENSE: The Huskies defense has dominated opponents this season, giving up just 9.0 points per game, which ranks first in the PSAC and is tied for fourth in all of Division II. BU is also near the top nationally in total yards allowed ( sixth in DII; first in PSAC), rushing yards allowed ( th in DII; first in PSAC) and passing yards allowed ( th in DII; fifth in PSAC) In addition, the BU defense averages 8.25 tackles-for-loss per game (tied for 24th in DII), 3.75 sacks per game (tied for 10th in DII), and forces opposing quarterbacks to post a pass efficiency rating of just (14th in DII). KEEPIN IT LOW: The 36 points given up by BU in four games is the fewest to start a season since 1997 when they allowed only 27. The Huskies opened with a shutout of Wayne State, allowed 18 points in a loss to IUP, gave up just three points to Lock Haven, then allowed six points in a defeat of Cheyney. Against the Eagles, Smith registered 11 tackles, including five solo, and a half-sack. He led keyed a goal line stand in the second quarter and helped lead a defense that allowed just 261 yards to one of the nation s top ranked offenses. Smith recorded seven tackles, including three tackles-for-loss and a 34-yard inteception return last week against Kutztown. Junior Mike Varanavage topped all tacklers with 10 against Cal and is second on the team with 31 in The team s leading returning tackler with 53 in 2008, Varanavage also knocked down the Vulcans Hail Mary pass in the closing seconds of the game. Junior Thomas McFarland is fourth on the Huskies in tackles with 20, recording eight with one tackle-for-loss against Mercyhurst two weeks ago. DOMINATING D-LINE: Senior Justin Presley leads the PSAC and is second in Division II with six sacks (1.50 pg) through four weeks of action and his 7.0 tackles-for-loss is tied for first in the conference. Presley has teamed with fellow senior Alphonso Nathan and junior Dave Huot to provide the defense with a constant pass rush and tackles behind the line of scrimmage. Junior Marcus Zimmerman and Huot each have five tackles-for-loss (1.25 per game), tied for 11th in the PSAC. Sophomore Oscar Rivera leads all Husky defensive backs and is third on the team with 22 tackles, including two tackles-for-loss. Rivera also has an interception and two pass breakups. Junior Alex Landis has recorded 18 tackles, including 0.5 tackle-for-loss. He has also posted an interception and two pass breakups in Senior Jesse Cooper registered his first interception of the season against Mercyhurst and added four tackles, helping the defense hold the Lakers to 130 passing yards. Senior Domenique Price had the second pick of his career against the Lakers, and has chipped in with 15 tackles, one tackle-for-loss and two pass breakups this season. Junior Dan Oliver received his first significant playing time last week against the Golden Bears, notching four tackles and a pass breakup. Sophomores Vince Browning and Andrew Flogel have also received playing time, combining for seven tackles, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery. POSITIVE RETURNS: Jesse Cooper, an All-PSAC defensive back, has flashed his ability in the return game in Cooper returned the opening kickoffs against Ashland and Mercyhurst 42 and 44 yards, respectively. He also returned three punts for 49 yards, including a 28-yard return late in the 4th quarter, against Ashland. Against Cal, the Vulcans twice angled their kickoffs away from Cooper, as he returned just one kick for 22 yards. JUST FOR KICKS: After going 4-for-4 on extra points against Kutztown on Saturday, Koenig has extended his streak of consecutive made point-after kicks to 73. The streak almost died against Kutztown, as Koenig s third extra point attempt was 40 yards long because of two BU penalties. TB Brandon Real saw his first collegiate action earlier this year against Cal, carrying the ball eight times for 19 yards, including a 12-yard run on the Huskies first scoring drive early in the 2nd quarter. He also returned kicks against Kutztown, including a 28-yard punt return in the 4th quarter. WR Kyle Fisher has played in three games this year for BU, making his mark on special teams. Fisher has three tackles this season, including two against Cal on kick coverage, and returned a kickoff 33 yards against Kutztown. Jon Koenig has kicked a field goal in five consecutive games dating back to last season, the longest such streak for a Husky kicker since Mark Weiss did it the last six games of his career in Koenig s 50-yard field goal was the sixth of his career over 40 yards and it was his third in three games. 8 A FAMILY AFFAIR: Huskies sophomore FB Matt Cox comes from a family of fullbacks. His father, Lawrence, played at Temple from ; his older brother Mike played collegiately at Georgia Tech from and is currently in his second year with the Kansas City Chiefs; and younger brother Lucas is a junior at Georgia Tech. Coincidentally, current BU assistant head coach and defensive coordinator, Paul Darragh, began his playing career at Temple during Lawrence s final year. ROAD WARRIORS: BU has enjoyed much success on the road as of late. 12 Danny Hale Bloomsburg University Head Coach Danny Hale, one of the winningest coaches in all of Division II, will begin his 17th season at the helm of the Huskies in Hale also spent five years as head coach at West Chester University. At Bloomsburg, Hale has posted a career record of (.751) and holds the school record for most coaching victories. Overall in 21 years as a head coach he has a mark of (.752) and is ranked among the top 10 active coaches in NCAA Division II in winning percentage. In his 16 seasons as head coach at Bloomsburg he has led the Huskies to 10 outright or shared Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division titles and six NCAA post-season playoff berths. In the period from 2000 to 2008 the Huskies are also one of the most successful NCAA Division II programs with a combined record of (.792). In 2008 the Huskies started the season winning the first nine games of the year, including wins over nationally-ranked Ashland and California (Pa). Bloomsburg earned a bid to the NCAA Division II playoffs for the sixth time overall, and fifth time this decade, reaching the NCAA Region One finals. In 2006, the Huskies posted a mark of 12-2 and won the PSAC Eastern Division title, while also capturing the NCAA Northeast Regional title and advancing to the NCAA Division II national semi-finals. Hale was named the PSAC East Coach of the Year, the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II District I Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year award. By virtue of being a finalist for the award he was featured on an ABC- TV special hosted by Keith Jackson. In 2005, Hale led the Huskies to a record of 11-1, including an unbeaten (11-0) mark in the regular season. It was just the fourth time in school history that a Bloomsburg team went through the regular season without a loss. He also earned PSAC Eastern Division Coach of the Year honors and the AFCA District One Coach of the Year award. The Huskies have reached the NCAA playoffs in 1996, 2000 and 2001 seasons.
