1 New York Giants (0 0) vs. Washington Redskins (0 0) Week 1 September 11, :15 p.m. ET FedExField SERIES RECAP The Giants and Redskins have played each other 158 times since 1932 and the Giants lead the regular season series, The postseason series is tied, 1 1. In 2010, the Giants beat the Redskins twice in late season matchups. The first came at home in Week 13, when the Giants won, In the final game of the 2010 regular season, the Giants won at Washington, THE LAST TIME vs. REDSKINS The Giants took care of their own business and never trailed in a victory over the Redskins at FedEx Field to end the 2010 season. Despite a 10 6 record (the same as the Packers, who made the playoffs, and the Buccaneers, who did not), the Giants finished out of the playoffs for the second consecutive season for the first time since The only points of the first quarter came when Lawrence Tynes capped a 10 play, 78 yard drive with a 20 yard field goal. Brandon Jacobs scored on a two yard run with 3:06 remaining in the second quarter to give the Giants a 10 0 lead. The score was set up by Kevin Boss one handed catch of Eli Manning s 24 yard pass on the previous play, which was the longest gain of the nine play, 69 yard drive. The Redskins scored their first points of the game when Fred Davis cut across the end zone on second and goal and caught Rex Grossman s pass, making the score 10 7 at half. Early in the third quarter, Mario Manningham got behind D Angelo Hall and caught Manning s pass for a 92 yard touchdown, the third longest in Giants history. Manningham took the ball in at the Giants 35 yard line and sprinted to the end zone, putting the Giants up by 10. It was the second week in a row Manning threw the longest touchdown pass of his career (both to Manningham). The previous was an 85 yarder at Green Bay. In the fourth quarter, the Giants twice stopped Washington on fourth down, and Osi Umenyiora and Kenny Phillips recovered fumbles to help preserve the win. Washington scored on Grossman s 64 yard pass to Anthony Armstrong. On the first play following a Giant punt, Armstrong got behind Giants safety Antrel Rolle, caught Grossman s pass and won a footrace to the end zone, making the score with 5:52 to play. The Giants held the ball for almost four minutes before punting and although Washington moved the ball to the Giants 36 yard line, the Giants defense forced a turnover on downs, effectively ending the game. 4 GIANTS CONNECTIONS Offensive line coach Pat Flaherty was the tight ends coach for the Redskins in Defensive line coach Robert Nunn held the same position with the Redskins in Tight ends coach Michael Pope worked with Washington s tight ends from Wide receiver Devin Thomas was a second round draft choice of the Redskins in 2008 and played in 34 games with Washington. Thomas caught 40 passes for 445 yards (12.7 yard average) and three touchdowns. Thomas also returned 35 kicks for 838 yards. ROOKIE WATCH The New York Giants welcome 10 rookies to the 53 man roster in the 2011 season. Along with the Giants first round pick defensive back Prince Amukamara, safety Tyler Sash and four linebackers are looking to make an impact on the defensive side of the ball this season (LB Mark Herzlich, LB Jacquian Williams, LB Greg Jones, LB Spencer Paysinger). Rookie Henry Hynoski earned the starting full back job, while tackle James Brewer, running back Da Rel Scott, and wide receiver Jerrel Jernigan look to a depth to the offensive side of the ball. PROTECTION IS THE KEY Eli Manning was not sacked in seven games in the 2010 season. The Giants allowed only 16 sacks all season, including four in the last nine games. That shattered the previous team record in a 16 game schedule of 24 set in ENDS MEET Osi Umenyiora and Justin Tuck tied for the team lead with 11.5 sacks apiece in 2010, the first time the Giants had two players with at least that many sacks since 2005, when Umenyiora had 14.5 and Michael Strahan finished with Umenyiora also led the league with 10 forced fumbles, tying Jason Taylor s record set in 2006 with Miami. The stat has been kept since LOSSES TO THE SECONDARY The Giants placed CB Terrell Thomas on injured reserve on Aug 23, one day after tearing his ACL against the Bears. Thomas was the Giants leader in tackles and interceptions for the past two years. Another cornerback who tore an ACL in the game against the Bears, Brian Witherspoon, was waived/injured. ELI DOES IT AGAIN Eli Manning finished the 2010 season with 4,002 passing yards to become the first Giants quarterback with two 4,000 yard seasons. He threw for 4,021 yards in Kerry Collins (4,073 in 2002) and Phil Simms (4,044 in 1984) are the only other Giants to pass for more than 4,000 yards in a season. PRESEASON GAMEBALL Greg Jones, Jacquian Williams, Spencer Paysinger, and Mark Herzlich. Unnecessary Roughness: Three adjustments were made to the unnecessary roughness rule in the interests of player safety and competitive fairness: Existing unnecessary roughness rules have been standardized and protection for defenseless players has been expanded, including additional safeguards for defenseless receivers, players who receive blindside blocks and quarterback, kickers and punters on changes of possession. All unnecessary roughness violations result in a 15 yard penalty. Illegal launching, which has been defined as a player leaving both feet prior to contact to spring forward and upward into an opponent and delivering blow with any part of the helmet, has been prohibited. Our intent with launching was trying to make a uniform rule that applied everywhere on the field to every player, says NFL Competition Committee Chair and Atlanta Falcons President Rich McKay. Roughing the passer rules have been clarified so hits to the head of a passer by an opponent s hand, arms, or other parts of the body will not result in fouls unless they are forcible blows. 2. Kickoffs: Due to an increasing number of injuries on kickoffs, several rules have been changed to make those plays safer for both the kicking and receiving teams. The kicking team s restraining line has been moved to its own 35 yard line. The kicking team formation for kickoffs has also been adjusted so all players other than the kicker must be lined up no more than five yards behind their restraining line. Illegal formation violations result in a five yard penalty. 3. Instant Replay: Two adjustments were made to instant replay procedures in the interest of competitive fairness: The replay official will now initiate reviews of all scoring plays throughout the game from the booth, allowing confirmation of all scoring plays providing more flexibility to coaches in the use of their challenges. This proposal is what I would call a modernization of instant replay, says McKay. Teams will now be penalized 15 yards for initiating a challenge after a foul prevents the next snap. This prevents a team from challenging the previous play if it commits a pre snap foul. 4. Dead Ball Personal Fouls: Dead ball personal fouls by either team at the end of a half will now be enforced on the ensuing kickoff of the third quarter, eliminating the extension of a half after a five or 15 yard penalty enforcement that includes a dead ball personal foul against the defense. This ensures consistent enforcement for all dead ball personal fouls on both the offense and defense in these situations. 5. Playing Field Color: Absent prior approval from NFL, the surface of the entire field must be a league approved shade of green, preserving the uniform appearance of all NFL games. 5 Timex Performance Center 1925 Giants Drive East Rutherford, NJ 07073
