The group includes seven draft choices (defensive back Prince Amukamara, wide receiver Jerrel Jernigan, tackle James Brewer, linebackers Greg Jones and Jacquian Williams, safety Tyler Sash, and running back Da Rel Scott) and three free agents (linebackers Mark Herzlich and Spencer Paysinger, fullback Henry Hynoski). FILLING IN NICELY. With defensive end Osi Umenyiora out the first three weeks, the Giants relied heavily on second-year DE Jason Pierre-Paul and he delivered. Pierre-Paul has had 2.0 sacks in two of the first three games. APPLYING THE PRESSURE. 4 ON THE HORIZON. The Giants host the Seattle Seahawks in MetLife Stadium at 1:00 p.m. on Oct. 9. The Giants lead the regular season series, 8-5, and have a two-game winning streak. THE LAST TIME IN ARIZONA. On Nov. 23, 2008 the Giants returned to the site of their Super Bowl XLII victory and defeated the Arizona Cardinals, The victory improved the Giants to 10-1 (tied for the best record in the NFL at the time) and maintained a three-game lead in the NFC East. The victory was the Giants sixth in a row. Brandon Jacobs was not in uniform for the game because of a knee injury he suffered against the Baltimore Ravens the previous week. Plaxico Burress tried to play with a sore hamstring but lasted just one series. Even with the loss of their leading rusher and most dangerous receiver the Giants could not be derailed. Eli Manning threw three touchdown passes - one each to Amani Toomer, Madison Hedgecock, and Kevin Boss. Derrick Ward scored on a one-yard run and John Carney kicked three field goals for the Giants. A long list of players had big games. Domenik Hixon had 269 total yards (180 on kickoff returns, 57 receiving, 21 on punt returns, and an 11-yard rush). At the time, that tied for the third-most all-purpose yards in a game in Giants franchise history. In addition to kickoff returns of 83 and 68 yards, Hixon led the team with six catches for 57 yards. Ward started for Jacobs and rushed for 69 yards on 20 carries and caught four passes for 30 yards. Manning played one of his best games of the 2008 season, completing 26 of 33 passes (a then career-best 79 per cent completion rate) for 240 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. The defense gave up 351 passing yards to former Giants quarterback Kurt Warner, but they limited the damage, allowing no throws longer than 30 yards, held Anquan Boldin to 87 yards on his 11 catches, and came up with two second-half takeaways that resulted in 10 points, the difference in a ninepoint game. The special teams were also huge. Hixon s two long kickoff returns were probably the difference, Tom Coughlin said. Carney, back kicking after stepping aside for Lawrence Tynes the previous week, boosted three field goals. Arizona tried two onside kicks in the fourth quarter, but the Giants secured both of them. The Cardinals loss was their first at home that season. They scored on Tim Hightower touchdown runs of four and one yard, Warner s five-yard touchdown pass to Boldin, and three Neil Rackers field goals. Arizona scored first, on a 34-yard field goal by Rackers with 6:18 remaining in the first quarter. Ward s one-yard touchdown run on second-and-goal gave the Giants a 7-3 lead early in the second quarter. Arizona took a 9-7 lead on Hightower s four-yard touchdown run with 7:51 remaining in the quarter. A bad snap foiled the extra point attempt and holder Dirk Johnson s pass for Calais Campbell fell incomplete in the end zone. Carney s 33-yard field goal with 6:51 left in the second quarter put the Giants back on top The Giants were held to only three points after Hixon s 83-yard kickoff return. Racker s second field goal, a 20-yarder with 3:39 remaining in the second quarter, put the Cardinals up by two, With just over one minute left in the first half, Toomer s 12-yard touchdown reception from Manning on third-andseven gave the Giants a lead at half. With 10:35 left in the third quarter, Manning threw his second touchdown pass, a two-yarder to Hedgecock. The fourplay, 40-yard drive was set up by Mathias Kiwanuka s recovery of a Warner fumble forced by Justin Tuck. Arizona responded late in the third quarter with a 12-play, 90-yard drive that was capped by Hightower s second touchdown, a one-yard run on first-and-goal. The Giants quickly responded to the Arizona touchdown by marching 80 yards in 10 plays and finishing the drive with a 10- yard Manning touchdown pass to Boss. The drive only took 4:34 and resulted in a Giants lead with 11:15 remaining in the game. The Giants quickly regained possession when rookie Terrell Thomas intercepted a Warner pass for Steve Breaston and returned it to the Arizona 29-yard line. It was Thomas first career pick and set up a 37-yard field goal by Carney, increasing the Giants lead to Warner s five-yard touchdown pass to Boldin cut the Giants lead to with 4:02 remaining. Arizona then tried an onside kick, but the Giants recovered the ball. The ensuing possession resulted in another Carney field goal, this time from 33 yards, giving the Giants an 11 point lead with 1:55 remaining in the game. Rackers kicked a 44-yard field goal with 31 seconds left in the game, making the score When Arizona tried their second onside kick of the game, the Giants once again recovered the ball. Manning took a knee on the next play, ending the game. 4 Timex Performance Center 1925 Giants Drive East Rutherford, NJ 07073
