Giants defensive lineman Jimmy Kennedy was drafted 12th overall by the Rams and played with the team from ROOKIE WATCH The New York Giants welcome 11 rookies to the 53 man roster for the 2011 season. The group includes seven draft choices (defensive back Prince Amukamara, wide receiver Jerrel Jernigan, tackle James Brewer, linebackers Greg Jones and Jacquian Williams, safety Tyler Sash, and running back Da Rel Scott) and four free agents (linebackers Mark Herzlich and Spencer Paysinger, fullback Henry Hynoski, and defensive end Justin Trattou). FILLING IN NICELY. With defensive ends Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora out last week, the Giants relied heavily on second year DE Jason Pierre Paul and he delivered. A product of South Florida, Pierre Paul had two sacks and three tackles for loss against the Washington Redskins. Pierre Paul came on strong at the end of the 2010 season, finishing with 30 tackles and 4.5 sacks. He had two sacks vs. Jacksonville (11/28) and two vs. Washington (12/5) to become the first rookie in Giants history with at least two sacks in consecutive games. THE GO TO MAN Hakeem Nicks started the 2011 season with a breakout game last week against the Washington Redskins. Nicks had seven receptions for 122 yards, including a 68 yarder. He finished the 2010 season leading the team with 79 catches for 1,052 yards and 11 touchdowns in 13 games. Jonathan Goff was put on injured reserve on Sept. 10 after tearing his ACL in practice on Sept. 5. APPLYING THE PRESSURE The Big Blue defense finished 2010 with 46 sacks and opened the season last week on a mission to top that mark with four sacks against Rex Grossman and the Washington Redskins. Jason Pierre Paul led the team with two sacks and defensive tackle Chris Canty had another. Dave Tollefson replaced the injured Justin Tuck and also sacked Rex Grossman for a loss of 16 yards. Unnecessary Roughness: Three adjustments were made to the unnecessary roughness rule in the interests of player safety and competitive fairness: Existing unnecessary roughness rules have been standardized and protection for defenseless players has been expanded, including additional safeguards for defenseless receivers, players who receive blindside blocks and quarterback, kickers and punters on changes of possession. All unnecessary roughness violations result in a 15 yard penalty. Illegal launching, which has been defined as a player leaving both feet prior to contact to spring forward and upward into an opponent and delivering blow with any part of the helmet, has been prohibited. Our intent with launching was trying to make a uniform rule that applied everywhere on the field to every player, says NFL Competition Committee Chair and Atlanta Falcons President Rich MC KAY. Roughing the passer rules have been clarified so hits to the head of a passer by an opponent s hand, arms, or other parts of the body will not result in fouls unless they are forcible blows. 2. Kickoffs: Due to an increasing number of injuries on kickoffs, several rules have been changed to make those plays safer for both the kicking and receiving teams. The kicking team s restraining line has been moved to its own 35 yard line. The kicking team formation for kickoffs has also been adjusted so all players other than the kicker must be lined up no more than five yards behind their restraining line. Illegal formation violations result in a five yard penalty. 3. Instant Replay: Two adjustments were made to instant replay procedures in the interest of competitive fairness: The replay official will now initiate reviews of all scoring plays throughout the game from the booth, allowing confirmation of all scoring plays providing more flexibility to coaches in the use of their challenges. This proposal is what I would call a modernization of instant replay, says McKay. Teams will now be penalized 15 yards for initiating a challenge after a foul prevents the next snap. This prevents a team from challenging the previous play if it commits a pre snap foul. 4. Dead Ball Personal Fouls: Dead ball personal fouls by either team at the end of a half will now be enforced on the ensuing kickoff of the third quarter, eliminating the extension of a half after a five or 15 yard penalty enforcement that includes a dead ball personal foul against the defense. This ensures consistent enforcement for all dead ball personal fouls on both the offense and defense in these situations. 5. Playing Field Color: Absent prior approval from NFL, the surface of the entire field must be a league approved shade of green, preserving the uniform appearance of all NFL games. 5 Timex Performance Center 1925 Giants Drive East Rutherford, NJ (201) Giants.com

WEEK 1: GIANTS 14, REDSKINS 28 SEPTEMBER 11, 2011 By Michael Eisen LANDOVER, Md. The curtain went up on the Giants 2011 season Sunday and the performance was not close to the standard they set for themselves. They wasted two leads, were shutout in the second half, converted only one third down opportunity, made costly mistakes in all three phases and, most importantly, lost to the Washington Redskins in FedExField, 28 14, their first openingday defeat since The loss ended the Giants six game winning streak against the Redskins and their five game streak in Washington. Afterward, some of the harshest reviews were delivered in the Giants locker room. For many, the disappointment was exasperated by playing poorly on the 10 th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which were remembered in a poignant pregame ceremony. We don t live in a bubble as professional athletes, defensive tackle Chris Canty said. We re affected by what happens. What 9/11 means to us, what it means to our fans, what it means to our city, what it means to this country we represent the red, white and blue. And to go out there and put on that kind of performance is just unacceptable for us. It s unacceptable in every regard. We have to have more purpose than we showed on game day, we have to have more purpose than we showed in practice. That s what it s going to take because obviously we didn t get the job done today. We shot ourselves in the foot, tackle Kareem McKenzie said. They made the plays and we didn t. We made too many mistakes. The number of penalties we committed (eight) is uncharacteristic of this team based on what we ve done in the past against the Redskins. We didn t have a good day on the offensive side of the ball. We have to play better. Tom Coughlin will certainly do all he can this week to ensure that happens. It s our first game, I liked their effort, he said. I had no problem with that at all. But the execution, particularly the offensive execution, and the ability to defend the pass off of play action was disappointing. The Giants played without Pro Bowl defensive end Justin Tuck (neck), who arrived at the stadium hoping to play but was declared inactive after being examined by team doctors. He joined defensive starters Osi Umenyiora, Jonathan Goff and Terrell Thomas, who are all sidelined with knee injuries. Goff and Thomas are on injured reserve and will miss the season. We won t make any excuses about that, Coughlin said. We came down here, we were very well prepared and our guys were excited about playing. We knew the significance of the day and we wanted to pay our respects by the way in which we played. As I said, other than a couple of things that took place in the first half, it was highly competitive. We did not play the same way in the second half, obviously. Offensively we didn t do a thing we didn t score a point. That was very disappointing. Tuck hopes to play next Monday in the home opener vs. St. Louis. The plan is to wait one more week, said Tuck. I wanted to play this week. I m still not 100 percent, but I wanted to give it a go. The doctor said, We would rather have you out one week than re aggravating it and going through this process again and be out for a month. It was a precautionary thing. The Giants were also without tight end Travis Beckum, whose hamstring became tight late in the week. He s our third down tight end, Coughlin said. He s the guy that took all of the snaps for the whole week. That was part of the confusion with the two minute drill at the end of the game (which included a delay of game penalty). We had a tight end in there who hadn t really had much work, trying to do the best he could and the execution wasn t what it should have been. Tim Hightower rushed for one touchdown, Rex Grossman threw scoring passes to Anthony Armstrong and Jabar Gaffney and Ryan Kerrigan returned an interception for Washington s touchdowns. Eli Manning and Ahmad Bradshaw rushed for touchdowns for the Giants in the first half. But Manning threw the pick that turned into the game winning touchdown, a Lawrence Tynes field goal 30 Timex Performance Center 1925 Giants Drive East Rutherford, NJ (201) Giants.com

attempt was blocked, Antrel Rolle committed a penalty that aided the Redskins, the Giants rushed for only 75 yards 62 yards less than their 2010 average and succeeded on one of 10 third down chances. Our third downs were atrocious again, Coughlin said. I think our inconsistency and our lack of third down production you re not going to keep the ball if you can t do something with it on third down. The game turned permanently in the Redskins favor on the third play of the second half. The teams were tied at halftime, 14 14, and the Giants received the second half kickoff. On thirdand 10 from the 18, Eli Manning threw a short pass to his right for Hakeem Nicks. But Kerrigan, the outside linebacker who was Washington s first round draft choice this year, jumped up as McKenzie attempted to cut block him, batted the ball, caught it and quickly covered the nine yards in front of him to the end zone to give the Redskins a lead. He just did a good job and a good move to avoid the cut to jump up and tip it up, Manning said. It was a good play by him not a whole lot I can do about that. It was (a) blitz, Nicks said. We audibled to a little screen pass and the defensive end jumped up and made a good play on the ball. The Giants had a great opportunity in the fourth quarter, after Jason Pierre Paul s second sack forced a fumble by Grossman that was recovered and returned 13 yards to the Redskins 27 by Michael Boley. The momentum quickly stalled when Bradshaw lost two yards on third and one. Tynes came on to try a 38 yard field goal attempt, but it was blocked by Brian Orakpo. I felt like I hit it like I hit all of my kicks, Tynes said. They are not always going to be real high. Steve (Weatherford, his holder) said I hit it good and that it sounded good to him. We will look at film tomorrow. Anyway you look at it, it is a miss. There was penetration on the left side and the ball was not elevated very well, Coughlin said. It takes little then to block it, but that can t be an issue. Obviously, Lawrence has been out of action for awhile and we need to work on that. But that can t be a problem. We just won t let that be a problem. he s got to go through in terms of the rehab, we feel real bad for Clint. Sintim, near tears, spoke briefly with reporters in the Giants locker Washington took possession on its 30. On third and nine from the 45, Grossman threw to Fred Davis for seven yards. The Redskins would have punted, but Rolle hit Davis while the tight end was on the ground and was penalized 15 yards for unnecessary roughness. That gave Washington a first down at the Giants 33. Six plays later, Grossman threw a four yard touchdown pass to Gaffney that essentially clinched the game with 5:04 remaining. You re not supposed to go helmet to helmet as a defender, Coughlin said. It looked like he was trying to cover the guy up. I don t know that there was any intent there. I was very surprised when the penalty was called. Of course, it was way across the field. I don t think I lowered my head at all, but the call was made and you have to get up and play again, Rolle said. Next time, we have to take him down before he gets there and it won t happen. I don t think it was helmet to helmet. We definitely made contact with him after the initial hit. I definitely didn t lead with my helmet. I have never led with my helmet on any tackle and to say that is crazy. There is nothing I can do about it. The call was made. Grossman s six yard touchdown pass to Armstrong with only 37 seconds remaining in the second quarter created a tie. On second and one, Armstrong lined up alone on the left side, got a step on cornerback Aaron Ross and caught the ball in the end zone just before he stepped out of bounds. The Redskins traveled 80 yards in only five plays, all of them Grossman completions to different receivers. The longest was a 39 yarder to Gaffney, who slipped past Ross and was tackled by Deon Grant. That moved the ball to the Giants 15 yard line. After Grossman hit Hightower for a nine yard gain, Armstrong scored the touchdown. Bradshaw s touchdown also a six yarder gave the Giants a 14 7 lead with 2:48 remaining in the quarter. On first and goal from the six, Bradshaw took a handoff and ran to the right side, where he found daylight thanks to rookie fullback Henry Hynoski s block on Kerrigan. The score concluded an eight play, 85 yard drive that began with Manning s 24 yard pass to Mario Manningham. Manning and Manningham later hooked up for an 11 yard completion, plus a 17 yarder to Nicks and Brandon Jacobs ran for 14 yards on the 31 Timex Performance Center 1925 Giants Drive East Rutherford, NJ (201) Giants.com

play immediately preceding the touchdown. Hightower s one yard touchdown run early in the second quarter tied the score at 7 7. Grossman s 18 yard pass to Armstrong gave Washington a first and goal at the one. On the next play, Hightower ran wide to his left and beat the closest Giants defenders to the goal line. The Giants scored the only points of the first quarter on Manning s two yard touchdown run. The score was set up by Nick s 68 yard catch and run. Nicks got behind Kevin Barnes, caught the ball on the Redskins 25 and wasn t brought down until he was at the two. The 68 yarder tied fpr the longest reception of Nicks career. He also had a 68 yard reception on Dec. 13, 2009 vs. Philadelphia. On the next play, Manning scrambled to his right and stepped into the right front corner of the end zone for the Giants first score of the season. It was the fourth rushing touchdown of Manning s career and his first since Sept. 4, 2008, also in a season opener vs. Washington. No one even mentioned that in the postgame locker room because of the disappointments that followed. We have to do our part, Manning said. We have to keep the ball longer and help out our defense. We ve got to win the time of possession and sustain drives. We have to find a way to put more points on the board. The sooner the better. 32 Timex Performance Center 1925 Giants Drive East Rutherford, NJ (201) Giants.com

WEEK 1: GIANTS 14, REDSKINS 28 NOTES, ANCEDOTES, AND STATISTICS By Michael Eisen LANDOVER, Md. Notes and statistics from the Giants season opening loss to the Washington Redskins. *The Giants lost on Kickoff Weekend for the first time since 2007, which was also an NFC East road game (45 35 at Dallas). That was also the last time they opened the season on the road. *They lost a season opener to the Redskins for the first time since 1976 (they beat them to start the season in 1977, 1988, 1989, 1998, 2008 and 2009). *The Giants are on Kickoff Weekend, in road openers and in season opening road games. The 49 opening day victories are the third most in NFL history. Chicago and Green Bay are tied for first with 52. *Tom Coughlin is 10 6 on Kickoff Weekend, including 4 4 with the Giants. *The loss ended the Giants six game winning streak vs. the Redskins and their five game winning streak in FedExField, where they are *The score was tied at halftime, 14 14, but the Giants did not score in the second half. It was the Giants first deadlock at the half since Sept. 26, 2010, when they were even with Tennessee, The Giants did not score in the second half of that game and lost, Dating back to 2007, the Giants have lost their last three regular season games in which they were tied at halftime. They last won a regular season game in which they were deadlocked at the half on Dec. 11, 2005, when a tie in Philadelphia became a overtime victory. The Giants were tied at the half, 14 14, with Dallas in the NFC Divisional Playoff Game on Jan. 13, 2008 and won, *The Giants scoreless second half was their first since that Tennessee game last September. *The Giants held Washington to 72 rushing yards on 25 carries, a 2.8 yard average. In the teams last three meetings, Washington has run for 74, 67 and 72 yards. *Seven Giants rookies made their NFL debuts: linebackers Greg Jones, Mark Herzlich, Spencer Paysinger and Jacquian Williams, safety Tyler Sash, fullback Henry Hynoski, and defensive end Justin Trattou. An eighth rookie, running back Da Rel Scott, was in uniform but did not play. The eight rookies is the most the Giants have suited up for an opening day game since 2007, when they also dressed eight Aaron Ross, Steve Smith, Jay Alford, Zak DeOssie, Kevin Boss, Michael Johnson, Ahmad Bradshaw and Michael Matthews. Ironically, Matthews, the lone free agent in the group, was the only rookie to start the game. *Jones was the only rookie to start against the Redskins. He had four solo tackles, including one on the game s first play. Sash had two tackles (one solo) and Trattou had an assisted tackle. Hynoski delivered a key block on Ahmad Bradshaw s touchdown run and caught a four yard pass. *Jones was the first Giants rookie linebacker to start on opening day since Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor in 1981, the first defensive rookie to start an opener since tackle Barry Cofield in 2006 (Cofield now plays for the Redskins) and the first to start since Matthews, a tight end, four years ago. *In addition to Jones, defensive linemen Jason Pierre Paul, Dave Tollefson and Linval Joseph and tight end Jake Ballard made their NFL starting debuts. Pierre Paul had six tackles (five solo), two sacks of Rex Grossman for 26 yards, including one on which he forced Grossman to fumble. The ball was recovered by Michael Boley. Tollefson had two tackles, including a 16 yard sack, and Joseph had three tackles (one solo). Pierre Paul and Tollefson had sacks on consecutive plays late in the third quarter. 34 Timex Performance Center 1925 Giants Drive East Rutherford, NJ (201) Giants.com

WEEK 1: GIANTS 14, REDSKINS 28 NOTES, ANCEDOTES, AND STATISTICS Ballard caught two passes for 59 yards, including a 41 yarder. His first career catch was an 18 yarder late in the first quarter. *Eli Manning started is 104 th consecutive regular season game. Because his brother Peyton of the Indianapolis Colts is out indefinitely and missed the opener against Houston, Manning has the longest active streak among NFL quarterbacks. Peyton Manning had started 208 games in a row. San Diego s Philip Rivers is closest to Manning with 81 consecutive starts. *Manning completed 18 of 32 passes for 268 yards, no touchdowns and one interception that was returned for a touchdown by rookie Ryan Kerrigan. It was the first touchdown on an interception return by a Giants opponent since Nov. 14, 2010, when Dallas Bryan McCann brought one back 101 yards. *Manning scored the Giants first touchdown on a twoyard run. It was the fourth rushing touchdown of his career and the first since a one yarder on Sept. 4, 2008, also in a season opening game vs. the Redskins. *Hakeem Nicks caught a game high seven passes for 122 yards, his seventh career 100 yard game. *Nicks tied his career long with a 68 yard reception to set up the Giants first touchdown in the opening quarter. He also had a 68 yard catch vs. Philadelphia on Dec. 13, *The Giants rushed for 75 yards, their lowest total since they ran for 61 yards last Nov. 21 at Philadelphia. *The Giants converted just one of their 10 third down opportunities, their lowest number of conversions in a game since Dec. 28, 2008 at Minnesota, where they were one for eight. *Ahmad Bradshaw rushed for 44 yards to increase his career total to 2,602. That moved him past Bobby Carpenter (2,572) and into 11 th place on the Giants career list. *Bradshaw s second quarter touchdown run was the 18 th rushing score of his career, tying Joe Morrison for 12 th on the franchise s all time list. *Grossman completed 21 of 34 passes for 305 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. It was the third game in a row dating back to last season that the opposing quarterback has thrown for more than 300 yards vs. the Giants. Grossman passed for 336 yards in the Giants victory in last season s finale and Green Bay s Aaron Rodgers threw for 404 yards the week before that. *Fred Davis of the Redskins caught five passes for 105 yards to become the first opposing tight end with at least 100 yards since Dallas Jason Witten (14 catches for 156 yards) on Dec. 6, *Domenik Hixon played his first game since 2009 and returned two punts for 27 yards and caught two passes for 21 yards. *Chris Canty sacked Grossman for a five yard loss, his first sack since Oct. 3, 2010 against Chicago s Jay Cutler. *Lawrence Tynes 38 yard field goal attempt in the fourth quarter was blocked by Brian Orakpo. It was the first time a Giants field goal attempt was blocked since Dec. 7, 2008, when Philadelphia s Trent Cole knocked down John Carney s 47 yard try. *Tom Coughlin won a replay challenge in the third quarter. Grossman threw a pass on the right sideline to Jabar Gaffney that was ruled a 12 yard completion and a first down. Coughlin challenged the ruling, saying Gaffney was out of bounds. After review, referee Ron Winter said Gaffney did not have two feet inbounds with possession of the ball and reversed the call. Coughlin is with the Giants and in his career on replay challenges. *This was the Giants first season opener in Washington since 1989, when they defeated the Redskins, 26 24, on Raul Allegre s 52 yard field goal as time expired. 35 Timex Performance Center 1925 Giants Drive East Rutherford, NJ (201) Giants.com

WEEK 1: GIANTS 14, REDSKINS 28 NOTES, ANCEDOTES, AND STATISTICS *The Giants have faced the Redskins 157 times in the regular season since their first game in 1932, making this their most frequently contested rivalry. They lead the series, *The Giants inactive players included both of their starting defensive ends, Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora, who each had 11.5 sacks last season. Tuck suffered a stinger in a preseason game on Aug. 29 and was limited in the two practices in which he participated last week. Umenyiora is still rehabbing after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery on Aug. 19. Tuck s absence ended a streak of 64 consecutive regular season games played. He was not in uniform for the first time since 2006, when he sat out the last 10 games after undergoing foot surgery. He last did not start a game on Sept. 27, 2009 at Tampa Bay, a week after hurting his shoulder in Dallas. Tuck played that game as a reserve and started every game for the rest of the season. Tuck is the Giants defensive captain, so Canty took his place at midfield for the coin toss. Tollefson and Pierre Paul were the starting defensive ends, with the rookie Trattou making his NFL debut in reserve. Trattou was signed to the active roster from the practice squad Saturday. The Giants other inactive players are tight end Travis Beckum, wide receiver Jerrel Jernigan, cornerback Prince Amukamara and offensive linemen Mitch Petrus and James Brewer. *To honor the memory of the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks 10 years ago Sunday, the Giants players, coaches and sideline personnel wore NYPD, FDNY and Port Authority Police caps. Coughlin wore a Port Authority hat in the first quarter, an NYPD hat in the second quarter and an FDNY hat for the second half. Former Secretary of State Colin Powell participated in the pregame coin toss. Because middle linebacker Jonathan Goff and cornerback Terrell Thomas are on injured reserve with torn ACLs, the Giants played without four projected defensive starters. 36 Timex Performance Center 1925 Giants Drive East Rutherford, NJ (201) Giants.com

Giants Notebook September 12, 2011

Giants Notebook-September 12, 2011 By Michael Eisen EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. No button can be pushed, no magic potion can be swallowed and no football genie is going to escape from a bottle and make everything right. We just have to get going, Coach Tom Coughlin said today. We have to start playing. The mistakes from the preseason it s not preseason. Nothing else matters but getting it right. Too much went wrong when the Giants dropped a decision to the Washington Redskins yesterday in FedExField. A partial list includes a rushing attack that produced only 75 yards, failing to convert nine of 10 third down opportunities plus a fourth-and-one - a turnover that was turned into a touchdown, a blocked field goal attempt and allowing six passes of at least 22 yards, including three to backup tight end Fred Davis. Everybody feels like there were opportunities left out on the field, opportunities to win the game and we went out there to win the game, Coughlin said. It didn t happen and there are reasons why it didn t happen. You have to point that out because you have to make progress and go forward. It s not how we wanted to start, guard Chris Snee said. But it is, and we have to move on. And move on they did. The Giants gathered today and dissected the tape of their first loss to Washington since They then set their sights on Week 2, when they will host the St. Louis Rams on Monday Night Football. The Rams lost at home to Philadelphia, so both teams will go all out to avoid an 0-2 start. Although frustrated by their inability to execute as well as they planned, the Giants would not attach too much significance to one loss, particularly on opening day. It s long season and the Giants believe they will quickly and steadily improve. If they do, the Redskins game will be a bad but faded memory. We have to play better football that s what it comes down to, quarterback Eli Manning said. There are things we need to improve on, things we can look at to see where we need to get better from fundamentals and from doing the right things. We still have 15 games left to play and we still have work that we have to do, guard David Diehl said. You can sit here and make excuses. But we didn t play well enough to win. To have a third and one and a fourth and one and not convert, to start the second half with an interception for a touchdown those are the things that you can t let happen. When those opportunities come up you have to make the most of them. The most notable shortcoming was on third down. The Giants needed eight yards on their first conversion attempt of the game. Victor Cruz dropped a Manning pass that would have given them a first down. On their second possession, Manning hooked up with Hakeem Nicks for a 68-yard gain on third down. The Giants came up short on their remaining eight opportunities. I think four of those were third and 15-plus, Manning said, correctly. That s not really a third down problem, that s a first and second down problem. We had the big play, we had a drop, then you had two third-and-ones where you have to run it and pound it and get those. We have to get some of those, but we have to be better down and distance. When it is third-and-two and we re running it, we have to run it. It s a little combination of everything. Late in the third quarter, the Giants faced a third-and-seven from the Washington 37-yard line. Manning s pass to Mario Manningham gained six yards. On fourth down, Ahmad Bradshaw was stopped for no gain. In the fourth quarter, Bradshaw lost two yards on third-and-one. Lawrence Tynes came on to try a 38-yard field goal attempt, but it was blocked. That s very disappointing, Diehl said of the missed short-yardage opportunities. That s where you can sustain your drives. That s where you keep momentum on your side. You have to control the line of scrimmage. To have that happen is disappointing. In 2010, the Giants averaged rushing yards a game, or 62.5 more than they gained in Washington. That led to questions about the new-look offensive line, which includes center David Baas and left tackle Will Beatty, and whether the unit has had enough time to develop the cohesion to become a top-drawer line. It s no excuse, Snee said. We have to play better and we will play better. It has to start next week. We can t say, We have new guys, we get a month s grace period. These games are for real.

Coughlin refuted a reporter s suggestion that growing pains were responsible for the line s problems. We didn t play as well as we can play, Coughlin said. You can say it anyway you want. There is no excuse for it. We didn t play as well as we can and sometimes the very quick adjustments are not being made exactly the way they should be made. The key play of the game occurred on the third snap of the second half. The Giants, fittingly, faced a thirdand-10 at their own 18. Manning dropped back to pass and tried to throw to the right for Nicks. But rookie linebacker Ryan Kerrigan batted the ball into the air, caught it and ran nine yards to the end zone to give Washington a lead. You have to find the throwing lane but I m sure in that particular situation, we were trying to get the hands down and we didn t, Coughlin said. We weren t able to get them down and his hands came up just as quickly as the ball was to be released. That was a very athletic play by an outside linebacker, but part of the success of the play is that you have to get the hands down and maneuver to have a throwing lane. Instead of going down when McKenzie tried to cut block him, Kerrigan stayed on his feet and never took his eyes off Manning. I think we could have had a big play, Manning said. They were in an all-out blitz, so I tried to get a little receiver screen and it just didn t (go) that well. You have to throw it. It s one of those things, usually that guy s hands are down. He made a good play. I m counting on him being down. I m trying to hit my receiver in the chest. He s coming back to me. It s a timing deal and just a good play by that guy. Sometimes you can see the guy s not cutting so I had to throw it a little higher, but then it s a bad throw to the receiver. It s just a good play by him. The defense wasn t immune to miscues. Washington quarterback Rex Grossman threw for 305 yards after passing for 336 yards in the 2010 season finale vs. the Giants. Santana Moss caught six passes for 76 yards. Davis added his five receptions and Jabar Gaffney and Anthony Armstrong had touchdown catches. Safety Antrel Rolle gave the Redskins some added momentum on their final touchdown drive when he was penalized 15 yards for unnecessary roughness after diving and hitting Davis, who was on the ground after a seven-yard reception. Had Rolle not committed the penalty, the Redskins likely would have punted. After the game, Rolle wondered if the call was correct. Today, he didn t dispute it, because his action resulted in a helmet-to-helmet hit. After looking at the film I think it was definitely a legit call, Rolle said. My angle initially was to aim for his back and he began to alligator roll. Once he rolled, my momentum and our heads did collide. It s a legit call. In the heat of the battle you re just trying to help and get over there and get the guy down. He had one yard to get for the first down. My mentality was, he s fumbling with the ball, hit him as hard as I can, knock the ball loose. At no certain point in time was I going for an obvious head-to-head contact, but after reviewing the film I think it definitely did happen. It was a legit call. But I can learn from that. Next time just make sure I go over there and try to, I guess, push him down as hard as I can. Just make sure he doesn t get that extra yard. You know it happens. It s something you learn from. You move on. Just as the Giants have. We need to do a better job of preparing ourselves, and practicing well and putting ourselves in game speed, Coughlin said. I think, now that we have seen this tape, there can be some development and some drastic improvement. The players are on board with that. It s one game, McKenzie said. I could see if it was a one-game season and that s all we ever played, that s all we ever built ourselves up for. But it s 16 contests. This was the first one, where unfortunately we didn t make the plays to go ahead and win. We have to correct the mistakes we made, refocus ourselves on our next opponent and play better next week. I know this team has a lot of character, Diehl said. We re going to learn from this one and we re going to move forward. We have a lot of season left to go and believe in one another and we still think that we re a great team. *Coughlin on the blocked field goal: The ball doesn t rise higher than about six or six-and-a-half feet. There was penetration, but that would not have been a factor if the ball would have been elevated the way it should be.

*Coughlin said Nicks was having his swollen knee examined. We know that he does have an injury, but we don t know to what extent, Coughlin said. Asked if Nicks will face the Rams, Coughlin said, I don t know the answer to that. They are checking that out now. *Defensive end Justin Tuck missed the game with a neck injury. Coughlin was asked if Tuck will practice Wednesday. We will see, Coughlin said. The plan is to progress. If the doctor gives him the okay, then he goes and practices. I would like to see him practice. How about Osi Umenyiora, who is rehabbing from his Aug. 19 arthroscopic knee surgery? That again has to be something that comes from the medical people, Coughlin said. *Tight end Travis Beckum missed the game with a tight hamstring, an injury that started to bother him two days prior to the game. His absence probably hurt the Giants on third down. I am going to see how it feels, Beckum said when asked about working on Wednesday. As hard as it is to not play, you still have to look into the best interest of my hamstring and try to get back as soon as possible and help this team win. I don t want to try to push it a couple more days when I can be resting and come back even stronger. Coughlin said, I would hope (Beckum practices), but I don t have the answer for that. I didn t have the answer for that Friday afternoon, either. *The Giants have signed wide receiver Chris Hogan from Monmouth to the team s practice squad.

Giants Transcripts September 11-12, 2011

Head Coach Tom Coughlin September 12, 2011 Opening remarks A: Good afternoon, I m disappointed, as to be expected, in the loss. We took a long hard look at the tape and the players took a look at the tape as well. There is not enough execution. There is not enough good things going on. You look at the offense and an 85-yard drive that was very good but why aren t there more of those? Why isn t there more consistency? You look at our third down, one out of 10, and that s keeping us from having the ball and keeping the other people on the sidelines and without having them have opportunities to score. You look at our special teams and we average 13.5 on punt returns, which is a good thing, but we have a field goal blocked. The ball doesn t rise higher than about six or six and a half feet. There was penetration but that would not have been a factor if the ball would have been elevated the way it should be. Defensively, we hold them to 2.8 yards per rush but yet we give up five big plays and way too much passing yardage. We have the penalty when we have them stopped. You are talking about a game and you have the ball fourth and one, third and one, which really aren t executed and aren t blocked like they should be blocked, in particular the fourth and one. I went back and checked just to make sure and we did guess what the look was going to be, we just didn t execute. We didn t get it down. We have a ways to go with the process, with the execution. Offensively it has to happen and I think it will happen with a better week of practice. I think we had a very good practice last week Wednesday and they were ok Thursday and Friday. We need to do a better job of preparing ourselves, and practicing well and putting ourselves in game speed. I think, now that we have seen this tape, there can be some development and some drastic improvement. When you look at the penalties, we had gone down there and played the last five times and only had 16 penalties; last night we had eight. When you want to blame it on the rookies, there was only one rookie that had a penalty. We have guys that have played the game and been in the league and are reliable, dependable football players that all of a sudden were penalized yesterday. There isn t any doubt that we all felt the emotions of the day and we were all very excited about playing. Our ability to do some mixing and matching and to play the run well from a standpoint of defense, I think that is a positive thing we can grow on. The special teams aspect in regards to the punt return was a plus. We have a lot of young guys playing on special teams and hopefully this experience will settle those young guys down. Disappointed to put ourselves in position to win and not win, that is extremely frustrating to me and everyone else in the building, players included. There is a constant reminder, I am constantly reminding the players about having the ability to recognize the opportunity that is presented in the game to give you a chance to win and taking advantage of it. We just didn t do that. Q: Is it safe to say these are growing pains with the offensive line? A: I don t know. We didn t play as well as we can play. You can say it anyway you want. There is no excuse for it. We didn t play as well as we can and sometimes the very quick adjustments are not being made exactly the way they should be made. Of course, Victor drops the first third and eight and who knows what just keeping the ball right there may have done for us. That is not to make an excuse for later on when we had a third and three and didn t make it and a third and one and didn t make it. We definitely have some work to do to get where we want offensively. I won t take anything away from the Redskins, they played hard and they did the things they had to do to win the game but I am disappointed in our ability to not take full advantage of what we had. Q: What happened on the fourth down play? A: We didn t go back after Cofield went away. The center had a chance to get up. If he would ve taken the outside backer, there was a little crease to go there. Q: Was there any pattern of reason for the third and longs? A: I didn t see any patterns. I saw the run game make yardage on some occasions and not on others. There definitely were some third and longs but some of them were created by penalties and that s what set us back. Q: Why does going East-West instead of North-South on short make more sense? A: It doesn t. You are trying to get North-South. The way the play starts out, for example the second one, the third and one, was an absolute toss and the ball was supposed to go outside. The fourth and one had a chance to by virtue of the course, go in any one of a multitude because of the crease and where the seal took place. We just described it, it didn t. Q: Do players have the opportunity to say they want the ball? A: Most of them take that position but they may not verbalize it a lot. They do want the ball. Q: How does that work? A: The decisions are made as you develop a game plan and you have an idea of how many times you want the ball in someone s hands. Re: playing more zone defense in second half A: In the second half probably although we did play some man. Q: Is that a product of personnel? A: No. We had both coming in and we didn t play a lot of man in the first half but in order to incorporate some of the pressures you do want, you pretty much have to play some. Q: Did you see a lack of urgency or too much cushion on defense? A: I m not sure about that. I do know on the fourth and five we were off a little more than what we would have coached it and we weren t even able to get up there and keep it at five. Q: Do you anticipate getting more carries for Brandon Jackobs? A: I think if we run the ball more, we will have more of a balance. Q: Why wasn t Brandon in on the short yardage plays? A: Some of the runs have Brandon highlighted and some have Ahmad. You just happened to see some that had Ahmad. Q: Why are you not using Mario Manningham more in the slot? A: You can maneuver that around. He does end up in there sometimes but if you just go out there in a base look, we have tried to teach Domenik, Victor and we have done some with Jerrell. We have concentrated more with those people in there to be able to take advantage of Mario s speed on top.

Q: Is it a matter of reps and experience? A: Some of that certainly and opportunities and time, which we don t have. Q: What happened on Eli s interception? A: You have to find the throwing lane but I m sure in that particular situation, we were trying to get the hands down and we didn t. We weren t able to get them down and his hands came up just as quickly as the ball was to be released. That was a very athletic play by an outside linebacker but part of the success of the play is that you have to get the hands down and maneuver to have a throwing lane. Q: What did you think about Eli s performance? A: There is no question about what he was able to do with the long connection to Hakeem. That was a great play. He made other good plays throughout the course of the game, I just think that in the second half we needed more plays. We needed to come back in the second half and repeat the 14 points, if nothing more. I was hoping that once we got the ball at the 27 after the turnover, that was going to be the time for us to really make something happen. We did have two pretty good plays. Henry catches the ball in the flat and he just can t quite get turned up enough to get the first and it turns into a third and one, which we should have picked up anyway. Q: When an offense is struggling and you are still looking for your tight end and third receiver, is it Eli s job to overcome that and make things happen? A: They all have to. There are 11 of them out there and you are not going to have success with anything on offense without all 11 making a strong contribution. Eli is the quarterback so that is where everything wants to be centered but it takes everybody and all you have to do is look at the ball being handed off or tossed and realize that once the job is completed by him in that regard, I don t know what he has to do in that part of it. He directs traffic and gets us in the right place. The way he maneuvers in the pocket and stepped up and made the play to Hakeem, the plays to Ballard. We got the ball on the nine and he makes the play and hits Ballard and you are there again. Let s go. That is the frustration. Q: Do you think special teams could have helped more? A: 13.5 with a long of 18, I thought that was improvement on our punt returns for sure. The way the game is going and the way people are driving the ball, your kickoff return, I don t know what you are going to count on. You may get a fortunate one and bring it out although Banks didn t. They had a 25-yard punt return but the ball gets absolutely smashed out of the end zone a couple times with no return and a start at the 20. Q: Do you look at Green Bay last year with its injuries and point that out to your team? A: We have looked at that and we definitely pointed it out to our team. That is a lot to overcome but their circumstances a year ago aren t to far from ours in 07. We have some experience along those lines but we just have to get going. We just have to start playing. The mistakes from the preseason, it is not preseason. Nothing else matters except getting it right. Q: How long does it take for an offense to gel? A: I hope not long. Q: Does it fall on the quarterback to create the identity of the offense? A: I don t know if that is the quarterback. He is certainly going to take the pieces to the puzzle that he is presented with and carry out and execute the offense the way it is designed. The exact identity of how it is going to be is not the quarterback. Q: How is Hakeem? A: He is being evaluated right now. We know that he does have an injury but we don t know to what extent. Q: What kind of injury? A: I think the knee. Q: Is there going to be a point when you can rely on the special teams? A: I thought the punt returns were pretty good. I didn t see any problems with that. We did have some fair catches but we did have a good return average as well. Let s get over there and handle the ball when it is on the sideline or whatever that mortar type kick was. That was scary to even think we would not come up with the ball. We didn t have a lot of success bringing it out of the end zone. I m not sure exactly how this is going to go. We haven t seen that many real games for me to tell you that the kickoff returns are one out of four or two out of four. The 20-yard line appears to be quite a ways away. Q: Will Hakeem play? A: I don t know the answer to that. They are checking that out now. Q: When your team comes out of a game and feels like it should have won, do you feel like you have to rally the troops at this point? A: Everybody feels like there were opportunities left out on the field, opportunities to win the game and we went out there to win the game. It didn t happen and there are reasons why it didn t happen. You have to point that out because you have to make progress and go forward. It is not a fun day, you are not trying to beat anybody down. I m the one to blame but there is no finger pointing. There are three groups and we all have to pull together in order to make this thing work. It doesn t happen if it is just one or two or occasionally one or two contributes a little bit. You are looking at just the consistency of lack of point production offensively and it has to improve. It is a group that accounted for an awful lot of yards a year ago and a substantial point per game average too. Q: Will Tuck practice? A: We will see. The plan is to progress. If the doctor gives him the okay, then he goes and practices. I would like to see him practice. Q: What about Osi? A: That again has to be something that comes from the medical people. Q: Any other injuries? A: Nothing that I can account for right now. Q: Is Hakeem s injury worse than originally thought? A: Just the fact that it was swollen. Q: Is Beckum going to practice?

A: I would hope so but I don t have the answer for that. I didn t have the answer for that Friday afternoon either. Eli Manning September 12, 2011 Q: What s the most troubling thing to you about yesterday s game? A: There s not one thing. We just have to play better football. That s what it comes down to. There s things we need to improve on, things we can look at and see where we can get better from fundamentals, from just doing the right things. That s part of it. You re always going to learn from each game. You have some new guys in some different spots. Everybody can learn from each game. Q: How surprising is it that you got away from running the ball? A: I don t think that s the case. We re always a team that we re going to try to run the ball, we re going to try to do play action. Certain circumstances on a play action we weren t getting down. You re taking sacks, you get bad in down and distance and you can get off your rhythm and routine that you want to be in. Re: One for 10 on third down. A: I think four of those were third and 15-plus. That s not really a third down problem, that s a first and second down problem. We had the big play, we had a drop, then you had two third-and-ones where you have to run it and pound it and get those. We have to get some of those, but we have to be better down and distance. When it is thirdand-two and we re running it, we have to run it. It s a little combination of everything. Q: What s getting you into the third-and-long situations? A: You take a sack, you re going to be in bad down and distance, especially if you take it on second down. Now you have a third and long and you re playing into the defense s hands at that point. We had an intentional grounding on me one time. Those things back you up and you have second-and-twenty. You can overcome it, but you have to get a big play on second down and third down. Q: Does it seem like it s been a while since you and the offense have played at the level you want? A: No. We just have to get better. We can t worry about preseason. This game we did some good things. There s definitely some things we can learn from. Washington played great, they had a great plan. But there were still some good things that we did, that we saw. We adjusted to different things that we had prepared for. Overall, there are things that we have to improve on. That s what we re prepared to do. After any first game there are going to be a lot of improvements. A lot of teams didn t win that first game. We ve been through this before. We just have to stick together as a team and keep working. Q: Were there any warning signs in the preseason? A: No, not that I know of. I thought we had a good plan and Washington did a good job of mixing up their defenses and showing a lot of different looks. Sometimes we called things hoping for one coverage and didn t quite get it how we wanted it on some. Still got adjustments, completions, and stuff. There are still some good drives, some good plays. It s just not as consistent. It s not as if we had terrible plays and bad decisions and bad football. We just couldn t sustain drives long enough. Re: Interception. A: Just their blitz and what kind of defense they were playing from the top of the sidelines. Went to the right check and they were in an all-out blitz and the guy just made a good play. Q: It looked like the corner was on the receiver, but you could go over the top of him. Did you see that? A: Yeah. I think we could have had a big play. They were in an all-out blitz so I tried to get a little receiver screen and it just didn t [go] that well. Q: When you look at that play on film, do you think I just shouldn t have thrown it right or I shouldn t have thrown it at all? A: No, you have to throw it. It s one of those things, usually that guys hands are down. He made a good play. I m counting on him being down. I m trying to hit my receiver in the chest. He s coming back to me. It s a timing deal and just a good play to that guy. Q: Did he hesitate? It looked like the timing was screwed up. A: Yeah, you can t hesitate. Sometimes you can see the guy s not cutting so I had to throw it a little higher, but then it s a bad throw to the receiver. It s just a good play by him. Antrel Rolle September 12, 2011 Re: The helmet to helmet penalty. A: After looking at the film I think it was definitely a legit call. I thought it was a legit call. At no certain point in time was I going for an obvious head to head contact, but after reviewing the film I

think it definitely did happen. It was a legit call. But I can learn from that. Next time just make sure I go over there and try to, I guess, push him down as hard as I can. Just make sure he doesn t get that extra yard. You know it happens. It s something you learn from. You move on. Q: The tough thing is the ref can t legislate intent. It looked like you were trying to get your shoulder in. A: Yeah. Watching the film, I definitely did lead with my shoulder. My angle, like I said, was at a certain target point and once he began to alligator roll it kind of shifted everything. I think it was more the back of my helmet hit his helmet. Like I said, that call is just something you have to live with. Q: Coughlin seemed to understand that the intent wasn t bad. Your conversation with him okay on that? A: He definitely knows that I m not a nasty player. I consider myself a very physical player, but I would never ever be a nasty player. I definitely didn t go out there with the intent to try to hurt any opponent. No matter what the situation is. It was just a matter of instincts. I m trying to go out there and force a turnover, try to find a way to get the ball back for our offense and it ended up costing us. At the same time, I m never going to slow down my physical play. I ll just be, maybe, a lot smarter in the situation. Try to take him down. Try to control my instincts a little bit more. Q: Is it difficult with the short offseason and injuries? A: It s not difficult at all. I have confidence. We re not in sync yet. We obviously know that. As a defensive unit, we re not in sync yet as a unit. At the same time, we re playing hard. We re playing together and we re trying to make things happen with what we have. We will get in sync. Definitely will get in sync and that s something we re looking forward to come this week. Try to make sure everyone s on the same page at the same time. Try to get everyone together, try to focus a lot more on technique and responsibility. With the hard work and effort, I think we ll definitely come out on top. Q: What do you think led to the lack of urgency? Is that something that can be corrected? A: I don t know. I really don t know what led to it. I felt like as a team, I don t feel like we had the energy we should ve had going out there in our first game, especially being a division opponent. I felt like at times we were very flat. There s no focus point on that to say what caused what or what did not. We have to find a way. At the end of the day we definitely have to find our way, have to find our identity. At the end of the day, we re playing the game of football. There has to be a certain kind of passion about it. There has to be a certain kind of enthusiasm, which this team has. We just have to make sure we get back to it. Jake Ballard September 12, 2011 Q: What did you do on the play in the first half - tweak your hip or something? A: I landed right on my hip. Once the game went on, the defense was in a series, it just tightened up. That s about it. When I tried to run my route it got me real good. Q: So it happened before you ran that route? A: Right. Yeah it didn t happen on that route. Q: You were satisfied though with game one? A: Yeah. Obviously except for the loss. Offensively we did some good things, we did some bad things. We definitely can continue to get better and we re definitely going to do that. Q: Are you going to be able to practice Wednesday? A: I don t know. We ll see. Came here to get treatment. Come here a couple times tomorrow and hopefully I ll be able to go. Q: Does it feel worse now than it did after the game? A: It s about the same. It feels a little better as the day goes on. The more I move around and stuff. Q: You have an extra day this week too? A: That s a big, huge thing. Hopefully I ll be ready to go by game time. Q: Did your role change with Travis Beckum out? A: Same roll. Me and Bear [Pascoe], we know the plays Travis [Beckum] runs and if he s not doing them, we re doing them. It s not anything crazy.

Travis Beckum September 12, 2011 Q: Did you notice anything change within the offense because you weren t there? A: I think Bear did a pretty good job of doing the three wide stuff, especially with the amount of reps he didn t have, I think he held his own. I think there was a couple times where we went four wide but other than that, that s what happens and somebody is going to have to step up and fill in when someone goes out. Q: When did the injury happen? A: Friday. Q: Did it happen in practice? A: Yes, in practice. Q: Are you going to practice Wednesday? A: I don t know. I am going to see how it feels. Like I said, as hard as it is to not play, you still have to look into the best interest of my hamstring and try to get back as soon as possible and help this team win. I don t want to try to push it a couple more days when I can be resting and come back even stronger. Q: Did you have hamstring problems in college? A: I had a hamstring injury my senior year at Wisconsin and it seems like it has been lingering ever since. Q: You had it in camp last year too? A: I did, I did have it in camp last year. Michael Boley September 12, 2011 Q: Did you think you may have had some daylight on the fumble? A: No, I knew he was coming. He was the guy who actually blocked me when I was rushing so I knew he wasn t too far behind me. Q: Did you feel him? A: I felt him right behind me as soon as I picked the ball up. Q: Is there a sense of urgency on defense this week? A: It is a sense of urgency, regardless of who we play. It is the next step for us to get where we want to be. We feel that what we put on film the other day wasn t Giant football. We came in and got some corrections in today and today we have to put last week behind us and look forward to Sunday. Q: Are you happy about what happened to the Cowboys yesterday? A: It is early. We really didn t care who won that game. Right now it is all about us and we can only control our own destiny. Q: Do you have to resist the temptation in the locker room to react to your outside critics? A: It is a different mentality in here than what goes on the outside. What people think on the outside is exactly what it is, on the outside. We just tell them to stay tuned because it is still an early season. Deon Grant September 12, 2011 Q: What are your thoughts about the game? A: We still had opportunities to win the game. We went three and out, three and out, three and out in the second half. We had turnovers, we had a forced fumble and gave the offense the opportunity to put points on the board and we had an opportunity to stop them again on that last touchdown and they drove down on us and we just didn t do it. Q: What about the injuries on defense? A: We still had a great game plan. Injuries are going to happen, that is the NFL. Baltimore didn t have the same guys that they had when they won it in 2001 and you see what they did to Pittsburgh. When you have a mentality on defense, that is the mentality. Q: You don t feel undermanned? A: Cam is a rookie right. I don t do that. This is the NFL, rookie, four-year, 12-year, 15-year, if you are able to put this uniform on, you should be able to go out there and play ball. That s how I look at it. The rookies aren t even the ones that made all the mistakes. It was us as a unit, offense, defense, and special teams. Q: Do you care that people are worried? A: I don t care what people think, to be honest with you. I don t even know what they think. I know how I feel about it and when I came back I knew the situation. I have been dealing with injuries my whole career. It is what it is. When people start talking about injuries, I am just going to say Green Bay. That is no excuse because Green Bay didn t have half of their guys and they won a Super Bowl. Giants Head Coach Tom Coughlin On where the Giants fell short today: Up until halftime it was a very, very good and competitive football game. To start the second half off with an interception and touchdown that s a tough way to start the second half. We were battling even then, to be in a position to kick the field goal and have the field goal blocked which were contributing factors there as well that was extremely disappointing and that very well may have changed the complexion of the game completely there. The penalty in the drive, which, there s no one touching the receiver he can get up and run and he can do whatever he wants then in comes a defender flying and, I guess, they called helmet-to-helmet. That s a very difficult call for me, but the penalty contributed to that. I did not like the end of our game offensively at all. We didn t move, we looked disorganized, we took a delay-of-game [penalty] again that was totally unacceptable

there. It s our first game, I liked their effort. I had no problem with that at all. But the execution, particularly the offensive execution, and the ability to defend the pass off of play action was disappointing. On if the Giants encourage plays like safety Antrel Rolle s head-to-head penalty: No, no, you re not supposed to go helmet-to-helmet as a defender. It looked like he was trying to cover the guy up. I don t know that there was any intent there. I was very surprised when the penalty was called. Of course it was way across the field. On whether the Giants blocked field goal was due to a low kick: I think it was a combination of that and there was penetration on our left side. There was penetration on the left side and the ball was not elevated very well. It takes little then to block it, but that can t be an issue. Obviously, Lawrence [Tynes] has been out of action for awhile and we need to work on that. But that can t be a problem. We just won t let that be a problem. On the defensive coverage problems today: Well, a couple of times that was true [the defenders were leaving too much of a cushion]. There were a couple of double moves that made us look bad and then we recovered and made a few plays on the deeper balls. We did have quite a bit of cushion on a couple of plays. On the offensive stagnation from the preseason: Well, to me, it s the consistency factor. It seemed like if we did have a penalty, we didn t recover and that wasn t a problem for them. When they had a penalty, they would come back and make a first down and we did not. Our third downs were atrocious again. I think our inconsistency and our lack of third down production you re not going to keep the ball if you can t do something with it on third down. On if the interceptions were due to quarterback Eli Manning not seeing the defender coming up: Completely. Again, it was away from me. I did see a replay of it at the end of the game, but obviously that s a tall man (Ryan Kerrigan) that can get up in the air and elevate and he did so. On if defensive end Justin Tuck was close to playing today: We thought so, but the doctors didn t want him to play. On if the Giants lost today because they didn t have their whole team: No, no, that s not acceptable and we won t make any excuses about that. We came down, we were very well prepared and our guys were excited about playing. We knew the significance of the day and we wanted to pay our respects by the way in which we played. As I said, other than a couple of things that took place in the first half, it was highly competitive. We did not play the same way in the second half obviously. Offensively we didn t do a thing we didn t score a point. That was very disappointing. On what losing tight end Travis Beckum on Friday did to their game plan: He s our third down tight end. He s the guy that took all of the snaps for the whole week. That was part of the confusion with the two-minute drill at the end of the game. We had a tight end in there who hadn t really had much work, trying to do the best he could and the execution wasn t what it should have been. On the Giants having a difficult time on short yardage runs: Well, on the fourth down one, it looked to me like they were in a they seemed to gain leverage on us on the outside and there wasn t much room for the other back to go. They seemed to have the gaps covered along the front and the defender boxing the runs as well. Based on the formation that we use, I m sure that there were nine, 10 people up at the line of scrimmage. On the Giants two starting safeties playing down: That s not necessarily an indication of anything. In this day and age, safeties are all down at the line of scrimmage you saw [Reed] Doughty down there the whole night for the Redskins. We had our safeties down and I ll have to take a look at the tape to make any other comment. On how the Giants rookies played today: I don t really know. I d have to take a look at the tape. There were obviously some errors on special teams and there were some penalties, but I m not sure if it was those guys or not. They tried hard, we d like the performance to obviously be better, but until I see the tape I won t be able to say. Giants Quarterback Eli Manning On tackle Kareem McKenzie s comment, We shot ourselves in the foot : I ve got to give credit to Washington. They played a great game and did a lot of good things some different looks. We had a few things that we didn t connect on. When things were open, we hit them for the most part but they did a good job mixing up different looks. On third down we re one-for-10. That s a big part of the answer right there. On his interception:

No, we were cutting that guy. He just did a good job and a good move to avoid the cut to jump up and tip it up. It was a good play by him not a whole lot I can do about that. On how much pressure is on the offense because the defense is banged up: No, both sides of the ball have to do their part. I thought our defense played good tonight. They did a lot of good things, got us a turnover and stopped Washington for a good part of the game. We have to do our part. We have to keep the ball longer and help out our defense. We ve got to win the time possession and sustain drives. We have to find a way to put more points on the board. On the performance of the offensive linemen: I thought we were on the same page. Everyone was doing the right thing. They did a good job. Some of the sacks weren t on them. But, we have to look at the film. I thought they did a good job and gave us a chance to make some plays. On how he physically feels after the game: Physically, I m fine. I feel good. So, no issues there. On his comfort with wide receiver Victor Cruz: I feel comfortable with the guy. We didn t do a whole lot of three wides in the game. We got a little surprise on Thursday when [tight end Travis] Beckum was out. I thought our tight ends did a great job. [Tight end Jake Ballard] had two big catches for big yardage. It was just one of those deals we didn t go into that personnel a whole lot. I thought [Domenik] Hixon and all those guys did a good job kind of being thrown into the mix. Hixon had to play some four wides so that we could practice all week. On Washington stopping the key short yardage plays: They just played it well. We had headshots and had opportunities just one of those deals where everything has to be perfect. I handed off and I don t always see exactly why it will make it or not make it, but that s something we ve got to get better at also be able to convert on third and short and fourth downs and keep drives in the game. On Washington being a different team this season: They re always a good team. They played us well when we were good last year in the last game of the season. They re a talented team. They played well today. On the Giants offensive struggles: We try to figure out how to improve each week. That s our focus you prepare for the next game. We have a Monday night game coming up. We prepare for that and go out there and have a great week of practice and try to get better. On the single biggest thing he can improve on: It s tough to say. You keep working and prepare hopefully next week we have another good week of practice and we come out and play better than we did today. Giants Safety Antrel Rolle On the second half: I wouldn t say that something is off. There are times when we shut them down and there were times when they made good plays. They get paid just like we do. At the end of the day we tried to be effective with what we do as a unit. I think it is more so about us and not so much about them. On the helmet-to-helmet penalty: In the heat of the moment I felt like we were trying to get up. I don t think I lowered my head at all, but the call was made you have to get up and play again. Next time we have to take him down before he gets there and it won t happen. I don t think it was helmet-to-helmet. We definitely made contact with him after the initial hit. I definitely didn t lead with my helmet. I have never led with my helmet on any tackle and to say that is crazy. There is nothing I can do about it. The call was made. On third down defense: There were times we got after them and there were times when we played effective coverage. We just have to do what we have to do. We have to stop them, but at the same time they were pretty good at what they were doing tonight. They are a pretty good football team. Giants Defensive End Justin Tuck On his injury: The coaches said it was best to wait one more week. The plan is to wait one more week. I wanted to play this week. I m still not 100 percent, but I wanted to give it a go. The doctor said we would rather have you out one week than re-aggravating it and going through this process again and be out for a month. It was a precautionary thing.

On the game: You always want to be out there with your teammates. Hopefully, I will get that shot next week. I think the referees should throw more holding calls. I don t even know why it is a rule in the game if it doesn t get called. We are already off to a bad start, we lost a game. We are resilient. We will bounce back. What better way than at home Monday night. We are looking forward to it. If we can get some guys back we will be close to full strength. Giants Kicker Lawrence Tynes On him kicking: It is going to take another couple of weeks to get back into kicking shape. I have to get to work. There was a lot of blood on the quad for two or three weeks. Just getting back to the number of kicks where I need to feel good. I was tired after pregame. On the block: I got ran over. I am not a very good tackler so I just got ran over. I felt like I hit it like I hit all of my kicks. They are not always going to be real high. Steve said I hit it good and that sounds good to him. We will look at film tomorrow. Any way you look at it, it is a miss. Giants Guard Chris Snee On game: We have to play better. I am very disappointed. This is going to sit with me tomorrow and after I watch the film I am going to move on because I have to. There are 15 more games. There is no time to panic.

The Coughlin Corner Week 1

The Coughlin Corner Week 1 By Michael Eisen EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. The Coughlin Corner, Giants.com s exclusive weekly interview with head coach Tom Coughlin: Q: The season opener is Sunday in Washington. What does opening day mean to you? Coughlin: It still generates a lot of emotion and enthusiasm. The feeling you get on the sidelines and during the national anthem will be even greater this year because it will be the 10 th anniversary of 9/11. It is just as exciting as ever, the balancing factor being the opponent and how you go into the game and those types of things. The emotion and excitement and why you coach it and why you play it is all there. Q: What are some of the challenges you face when preparing for an opening game? Coughlin: There are unique challenges, particularly when you are facing someone you don t have any past record on or if it is a first-time head coach or someone you don t have any research information based on the offseason. You always have to balance things out in regards to what are they showing and what are they not showing. What has he done in the past that he is not showing now? How does he cater to his personnel? What is the obvious objective of preseason and then it is looking hard at what they have done with their personnel. This team (the Redskins) went out and got seven starters and I m not talking about the draft sequence either, I am talking about through free agency and trades. They built themselves seven starters and their number one draft choice gives them eight starters that weren t there a year ago. You have a lot of things that have to be analyzed and how these people fit with what they are trying to do and the influence of these different players in their system and how those players can impact what they already have. You have a lot of that type of analysis and conjecture that you have to speculate on. You can t just sit and say, Okay, that is what I see in preseason. You have to speculate on where you think they are heading. Q: Are there more adjustments on the fly in the first game? Coughlin: You have that anytime anybody comes in with a different plan, whether it s on offense, defense or special teams. That is what you do. Your whole sideline and game day circumstances are about adjusting, changing or reacting. What do you see and what don t you see? That type of stuff. In a normal year, you have studied the offseason and you already have a game plan and all you are doing is updating it based on what you see in preseason and then you have to weigh again what kind of emphasis you put on what you saw in preseason. Are you disregarding it or are you disregarding what you saw last season. Q: Because you didn t have an offseason program and didn t have two-a-days in training camp, do you have any less of a feel for your team than you normally do prior to the season opener? Coughlin: Well, again you have to have people that are going to come through for you and play the way you visualize playing. You always have adjustments. You always have things that have to be changed based on personnel. Those are the real issues. How are people going to perform under the pressure of the first game in the National Football League? Therein lays how you are going to play and how you are going to perform. Then you go through the gambit of, Has the opponent improved? Are you going to protect the passer well? Is everyone on the same page in regards to the blitz timing and who can cover and who can t cover? What issues are you being forced to confront, even if you don t want to with the style of attack on defense or offense? You have a guy like (Brandon) Banks, who is a kick returner and punt returner, what are your thoughts there? Are you going to be the kind of punt team that is going to be able to keep the ball away from him or pin him on the boundaries? Are you going to be able to do that for the length of the game? Q: You ve lost six defensive players to season-ending injuries. Do you discuss them with the entire team? Or does mentioning them give the players an excuse? Coughlin: There are no excuses. Most of our feelings are for the player that is injured and, of course, we wish him well, knowing full well that he is emotionally in a state of shock right away. Everything he desired and wanted and was excited about from a professional standpoint is taken away from him for that year. We just were honest about it and then the next move is to move on. Let s go and move forward. There is absolutely no thought or pity and there is no spending anytime for remorse. You get yourself off the floor and you go make your adjustments and move forward. Dealing with it is not an easy thing and one thing is you are reminded of it all the time. Somebody wants to carry a list around and it is there. But my thing is, if we could have changed anything that would put ourselves in a better position for this then I would have done it in a minute. When you look at the way these injuries have come about, what are you going to do or how are you going to change anything? Poor Jon Goff was basically nothing more than a jog through at a Monday practice in the first team period. On about the sixth or seventh play he bumps knees and you think they just bumped knees and that was not to be.

Q: You have 10 rookies on the team. Are you going to have to be more patient with this team because of that? Coughlin: We have had four preseason games with these guys and they have brought an element of enthusiasm and speed to the team. And that s first and foremost. You are always looking for great effort and an opportunity for these guys to know enough about their assignments to go out and play and that s the big thing. Let s not get hung up on the X s and O s. Let s put them in a position where they can go out and play and help us win a football game. That s where you come from. Do you know they are going to make mistakes? Sure, you know, and hopefully they are minimized. Hopefully, the other guy is not able to take advantage of it and that s what you are praying for. Q: On Sunday, Eli Manning will start his 104 th consecutive regular season game, the longest streak among active NFL quarterbacks. What are the tangible benefits to having him in there for every practice and every game? Coughlin: The continuity and the incredible reliability, dependability that you place in Eli. The idea that he is a great stabilizer in your team, people rely on him and they know they can rely on him. They look to him not only for leadership but direction. He is consistently meeting with receivers and running backs about protections. He exerts himself and he reacts. He is such a great example and it is a great example for all of us. He is intellectually stimulated by the game and he is a student that wants all the information and all the answers. He wants it all and if he doesn t have it all, he is not comfortable. When you have all these things and you know there is a certain level of preparation he is going to go through and his teammates know they have to be able to get up to the level that he is at. The stability, continuity, reliability and the fact that you know you have a guy in the driver s seat that you know is going to be a playmaker and the guys around him are going to benefit. Q: You made significant changes on the offensive line, which has been the heart and soul of the team. Are you pleased with that group s development? Coughlin: They have gotten better and better, but game day will tell a lot. They have grown closer and communicated better and (new center) David Baas has fit right in with those guys and that s a very, very smart group and they know what they are doing. If they can communicate it as fast as possible and David is on the same page, we will make the kind of progress we believe we are going to make. Q: Do you think Steve Weatherford will give you more consistency at punter than Matt Dodge did? Coughlin: Yes, the statistics have said that in the preseason. We think that as the game unfolds, we can make adjustments with Steve and put the ball outside the numbers. He can give us a reliable feeling when we punt the ball, where the ball is going to be placed. I do think very highly of Matt Dodge and I think he has made outstanding improvement and he will be a very good punter in this league for a long time. He just has to improve his directional punting, but he does have a very strong leg and his consistency this preseason was pretty good. Q: Do you think the Redskins will look significantly different than the team you played in the 2010 season finale? Coughlin: They have had a good preseason and they have a lot of yards and scored a lot of points. If you look at just the first two quarters, their ones have scored 30 and 31 points, so they have done well in the preseason. Running the ball, they are averaging 145 (yards) and 240 passing, so they have had a good preseason. Their defense has played well. They have pressured well and I think we can anticipate what the style of play will be and we just have to figure out how we can stop the offense and move the ball against the defense. Q: The opener will be played on the 10 th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. You ve often said you re not usually reflective, but are the events of that day something you ve looked back on? Coughlin: (Holds up a USA Today) All you have to do is look at the national papers and for a week it has been nothing but 9/11 memories and how it has changed our lives. You can feel how the league is going to recognize the tragedy that took place to this great country on 9/11/01. Recognizing the terrible loss of life and the people who have lost loved ones and recognizing the heroes, the firemen, the emergency people, the policemen, the people who immediately sacrificed their lives to save others. What it taught all of us about how we are responsible to a certain extent for our own safety in terms of being alert and recognizing it is a different world today. It is a different kind of warfare and we have to be really alert and aware of that fact. We have been taught a very different and radical lesson from this and our lives have changed. The world has changed and I don t think you can help that. My own personal feelings have to do with being close to General (Raymond T.) Odierno (the former commander of U.S. forces in Iraq and the current Chief of Staff of the Army) and being in Iraq and seeing a little bit of the world and how it reacts to terrorism. I have some personal feelings about it because my son (Tim) was in the second tower and the blessing our family received by him being able to escape. I read about the guy that died because his lungs were ruined by breathing the debris. There were so many ways people

were affected by this terrible tragedy. I can think of wanting my son to get as far away from there as fast as he could.
