8 ON THE HORIZON Next week, the Giants face the Philadelphia Eagles in MetLife Stadium on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 8:20 PM (ET). The Giants lead the regular season series, The postseason series is tied, 2 2. The last time the two teams met resulted in a Giants victory in Lincoln Financial Field on Sept. 25, ending a Giants six game losing streak to the Eagles. injuries. They were replaced in the starting lineup by Chase Blackburn and rookie Bryan Kehl, respectively, who helped limit the 49ers to 35 rushing yards, including 11 on 11 carries by star running back Frank Gore. I think both those kids played well, Coughlin said. They had to play well. Obviously, we did a decent job with the run. THE LAST TIME AGAINST SAN FRANCISCO: Oct. 19, 2008 Call them the home warriors. The Giants improved to a perfect 4 0 in Giants Stadium this season with a hard fought victory Sunday over the San Francisco 49ers. The four home victories are one more than the Giants had here in both 2006 and Now 5 1, the Giants won on a day when their offense was not at its best, but the defense couldn t have been much better. Sometimes things aren t pretty and from the offensive standpoint, things weren t pretty all the time today, said quarterback Eli Manning, who completed 16 of 31 passes for 161 yards and a touchdown. But our defense played outstanding and we got back to the way we ve been able to win games and just being efficient enough on offense and scoring when we have opportunities and not making mistakes. There were no turnovers today on offense which is great. That s what we ve got to do. Our defense got a bunch of turnovers, gave us field position, we had a couple good drives offensively. I think we are capable of playing a lot better than we did today, said Coach Tom Coughlin, whose team will face the 5 1 Steelers in Pittsburgh next week. But as I told the players, the objective was to win one game. We were able to hang in there and find a way to win the game and I am happy about that. The Giants did today thanks largely to the defense. One week after its no takeaway, no sack, no punt game in a loss at Cleveland, the unit had three takeaways (including safety Michael Johnson s first two career interceptions), sacked J.T. O Sullivan six times (one of which resulted in a safety) and forced five punts. And it did so despite the absence of starting linebackers Antonio Pierce and Gerris Wilkinson, who missed the game with Turnovers for us are the name of the game, said defensive end Justin Tuck, who had two of the sacks. Once you get one you start getting that blood in the water type of feeling. Michael did a great job and we fed off of that and we came up with some big stops because of our turnovers. The defensive line kind of felt left out after Michael s two interceptions. So we definitely wanted to get some turnovers, too. Any time you win the turnover battle, you stand a good chance of winning the game. The Giants scored on two Brandon Jacobs touchdown runs, Manning s scoring pass to Plaxico Burress, a pair of John Carney field goals and a safety. San Francisco which lost is fourth straight game and fell to 2 5 scored touchdowns on O Sullivan s 30 yard pass to rookie Josh Morgan and Nate Clements 74 yard return of a blocked field goal attempt. Joe Nedney added a field goal for the 49ers. The 49ers trailed by 10 points and were trying desperately to get back into the game when they took possession at their own 20 following a Jeff Feagles punt with 5:08 remaining. But on first down, O Sullivan was sacked by Tuck and fumbled. The ball bounced around before Morgan kicked it out of bounds for a safety, the first for the Giants since Oct. 23, 2006, when LaVarr Arrington tackles Dallas Drew Bledsoe in the end zone. Carney s season long 48 yard field goal gave the Giants a lead with 12:17 remaining in the fourth quarter. The 29 yard drive was set up by Ahmad Bradshaw s 29 yard kickoff return and bolstered by two 10 yard receptions by Steve Smith. The Niners pulled to within seven points on Clements return touchdown with 1:50 remaining in the third quarter. Carney, who had made 19 attempts in a row dating back to last season, tried a 35 yard kick. But Manny Lawson slipped through the Giants blockers and 8 Timex Performance Center 1925 Giants Drive East Rutherford, NJ 07073

9 got his hands on the ball, which bounced back to Clements, who ran far ahead of the field for the touchdown. Instead of owning commanding advantage, the Giants lead was a precarious They just made a great play, Carney said. It was a great athletic move by their player and it is hard to do what that guy did. But he pulled it off. That is why you play the game. I m glad we had a chance to kick it again. I started hitting all my gears on chasing him, but he was 10 yards ahead of me, and I wasn t going to catch him. It was the first time Carney had a field goal attempt blocked since Oct. 23, 2005, when he was with New Orleans against St. Louis. Carney had made his previous 19 field goal attempts dating back to last season, including 13 this year. Manning s six yard touchdown pass to Burress extended the Giants lead to with 9:01 remaining in the third quarter. On first and goal from the six, Manning faked a handoff to Derrick Ward, then fired a strike into the end zone for Burress, who shielded Clements away from the ball. The 18 yard scoring drive was set up by the Giants first fumble recovery of the season. O Sullivan and Frank Gore never completed the exchange on an attempted handoff and Mathias Kiwanuka recovered the ball. Manning passes to Steve Smith and Amani Toomer preceded the touchdown throw to Burress. Carney s 21 yard field goal increased the Giants lead to with 1:52 remaining in the second quarter. The score was set up by Johnson s interception of an O Sullivan pass for Morgan. Johnson returned the ball 18 yards to the 49ers nine yard line. Two Jacobs runs brought the ball to the three, leaving the Giants with a third and goal at the two minute warning. But Manning and Burress couldn t connect on a fade pattern and Carney came on to kick the field goal. San Francisco quickly drove from its own 27 to the Giants 19 yard line. O Sullivan threw to the end zone for Arnaz Battle, but Johnson plucked the ball out of the air for his second interception in less than three minutes. That s something we practice, Johnson said of creating turnovers. It hasn t happened in the game as much as we would like, but we practice on being ball hungry and today it showed. Guys were ripping, pulling the ball out, scooping up balls and trying to get the ball anyway we can. San Francisco pulled to within on O Sullivan s 30 yard touchdown pass to Morgan with 11:25 remaining in the second quarter. On second and two, Morgan got a step behind cornerback Aaron Ross and caught O Sullivan s pass in the back of the end zone. The score capped a six play, 74 yard drive that featured Morgan, who also contributed a pair of 14 yard receptions on the series. The second moved San Francisco to the Giants 38 yard line. After O Sullivan threw to Isaac Bruce for eight yards, he found the rookie from Virginia Tech for the touchdown. Jacobs two yard touchdown run on the first play of the second quarter increased the Giants lead to It was the second time this season and the sixth time in his career that the bruising running back ran for two games in a game. It always good to get into the end zone, Jacobs said. To go up against a team we ve struggled against you just have to keep pushing. Keep plugging away because nobody is going to give us anything. The touchdown capped an unusual eight play, 73 yard drive that included 51 yards on three 49ers penalties (two for 46 yards on Clements) and Coughlin s decision to eschew a short field goal and attempt to keep the drive alive with a fourth down conversion try. Clements first infraction was for unnecessary roughness for pushing down Madison Hedgecock after a whistle. Moments later, Clements was flagged for pass interference for making contact with Burress as the receiver tried to catch a Manning pass. That gave the Giants a first down on the San Francisco 19 yard line. Two Jacobs runs sandwiched Burress false start penalty, leaving the Giants with a third and nine. Derrick Ward s catch and run picked up eight. Coughlin then elected to go for the first down and Ahmad Bradshaw s two yard run kept the series alive at the eight. Jacobs ran for six yards on the final play of the first quarter and after the teams switched sides, he used Shaun O Hara s block on Kentwan Balmer to score his second touchdown. 9 Timex Performance Center 1925 Giants Drive East Rutherford, NJ 07073

10 I just felt like in that situation we had the momentum, we had the wind at our back, that we would go for that, Coughlin said of his fourth down decision. It was just a situational call, a gut call, if you will, and thank goodness it paid off. Nedney s 40 yard field goal lifted the 49ers to within 7 3 with 4:23 remaining in the first quarter. San Francisco drove 44 yards in seven plays prior to the kick, including an O Sullivan pass to Gore that picked up 26 yards. O Sullivan s pass to Bruce gave the Niners a first down on the Giants 24 yard line. But the defense stiffened and Nedney got San Francisco on the board with his field goal. Jacobs 26 yard touchdown run gave the Giants a 7 0 lead with 7:52 remaining in the first quarter. On secondand two, Jacobs took a handoff, bulled through the line, took advantage of Burress block on Clements, and motored down the right sideline for the touchdown. It was a zone to the left side and my read was right off Madison Hedgecock s guy and he kind of played around a little bit in there, Jacobs said. So I slowed myself down, had some patience, and when it opened up I hit it and we were off to the races. So were the Giants. I think we re happy to be 5 1, Manning said. We ve played some outstanding games offensively and defensively. We ve played some where we haven t played real well. Today our defense played well and we (the offense) didn t. That s football. You re going to go through all sorts of situations and it s all about finding ways to win. We ve always been pretty good at finding ways to gut it out and get a win at the end and today that s what we did. It wasn t perfect but we did what we had to do to win. 10 Timex Performance Center 1925 Giants Drive East Rutherford, NJ 07073

13 Tom Coughlin NFL Record: (Overall) NFL Head Coach: 16th year College: Syracuse Long regarded as one of the NFL s premier head coaches, Tom Coughlin is one of the most successful in the 86 year history of the New York Football Giants. He reached the pinnacle of his profession during the 2007 season when he led the Giants to victory in Super Bowl XLII. The Giants, big underdogs entering the game, scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to defeat the previously undefeated New England Patriots Last year, the Giants were 10 6, following marks of 8 8, 12 4, 10 6, 8 8, and 11 5 the previous five seasons. Their six year streak without a losing record is the Giants longest since they had 10 in a row from In 2008, Coughlin led the Giants to the NFC East championship and their 12 victories were the Giants highest total since the 2000 NFC champions won 12 games. The division title was the Giants seventh since the 1970 merger. It was the eighth time in franchise history and the sixth time since the 1970 merger that the Giants finished a season with at least 12 victories. The Giants advanced to postseason play for the fourth consecutive season, the first time they accomplished that feat in their history. Coughlin also led the Jacksonville Jaguars to four consecutive postseason berths ( ) and is one of only three coaches in NFL history to accomplish that feat with two different teams. Under Coughlin, the Giants routinely establish franchise statistical milestones. In 2009, the Giants scored 402 points after scoring 425 in It was the first time in franchise history that the Giants scored at least 400 points in consecutive seasons. Jim Harbaugh NFL Record: 7 1 (Overall) NFL Head Coach: 1st year College: Michigan Named the 17th head coach in 49ers history on Jan. 7, 2011, Jim Harbaugh enters his first season at the helm of the San Francisco 49ers.
