8 ON THE HORIZON Next week, the Giants face the Dallas Cowboys in MetLife Stadium on Sunday, Jan. 1. The two teams have met 98 times during the regular season with the Cowboys leading the series, The Giants lead the postseason series, 1-0, with a win at Dallas in the 2007 NFC Divisional Playoff round on their way to a victory in Super Bowl XLII. The Giants defeated the Cowboys, 37-34, in Cowboys Stadium on Dec. 11. THE LAST TIME AGAINST THE JETS OCT. 7, 2007 EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. The Giants certainly are living dangerously - and living well. For the second time in three weeks, the Giants on Sunday spotted their opponents a big lead, then rallied for a dramatic and important victory over the Jets in Giants Stadium. On Sept. 23 in Washington, the Giants rallied from a 17-3 halftime deficit to defeat the Redskins, Talk about living on the edge. Among those players making key contributions were Eli Manning, who had a 0.0 first-half quarterback rating, Plaxico Burress, who seldom practices because of a sprained ankle, Jeremy Shockey, who hadn t scored a touchdown in 10 months, and rookie cornerback Aaron Ross, who didn t play in the first half for disciplinary reasons. None of that proved to be an impediment. The Giants trailed in the third quarter, 24-14, before Manning threw touchdown passes to Shockey and Burress and Ross intercepted two passes the first at the goal line on what could have been a Jets touchdown, the second which he returned 43 yards for the game-clinching touchdown with 3:15 remaining. The second half, I thought we played really well, Manning said. We did an outstanding job. First half, we played about as poorly as we could. That shows we don t get our heads down, we don t get frustrated, we still have confidence that we can move the ball and score points. It is a matter of going out there and guys stepping up and making plays. The second half we were able to do that. Sometimes you got to win some of these ugly ones, and step up to have a great second half. That s why you have two halves in every game. It was a big win for us. We had to answer the call, linebacker Kawika Mitchell said. They scored on defense and they scored on special teams. We had to make our own plays out there. We came up on defense and made some big ones. Our offense is a great offense. The way we were playing like that on defense, is exactly what we need. Everything so far this year as been a test. We were in the face of adversity in the early part of the year. And today we faced it earlier in the game. It was just a test of how we were going to handle it. The Giants won their third straight game to improve to 3-2. The Jets, 1-4, scored on a fumble return (11 yards by Kerry Rhodes) and a kickoff return (98 yards by Leon Washington). They also got a touchdown pass from Chad Pennington to Brad Smith and a Mike Nugent field goal. Manning overcame his rough start to complete 13 of 25 passes for 186 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Burress led the receivers with five catches for 124 yards. Brandon Jacobs returned after missing 3½ games with a knee injury and carried 20 times for 100 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown. It was the first time I his career he hit the century mar. Derrick Ward added 56 yards and a touchdown on 13 attempts. It feels good to be back, Jacobs said. We had a good second half. We knew that they were going to have some trouble stopping the run. The key was to get number 34 (Ward) and myself the ball and then just let us run downhill. The second half was a lot more productive than the first. But it took a while. The Giants trailed at halftime, They took the second half kickoff and traveled 80 yards in six plays, all but one of the ground. Jacobs opened the series with runs of eight and seven yards. Manning then threw a 32-yard pass to Burress, the wide receiver s first catch of the day. That moved the ball to the Jets 32- yard line. Ward ran for nine and then four yards before Jacobs took a handoff, slipped between blocks on the right side by Chris Snee and Kareem McKenzie, and dashed to the end zone. He scored just before being shoved out of bounds. The Giants didn t retain their momentum for very long, because Leon Washington fielded the ensuing kickoff and returned it 98 yards for a touchdown. Washington ran right up the center of the field. He sidestepped kicker Lawrence Tynes, the last line of defense, and sprinted to the end zone. It was the first kickoff return for a touchdown allowed by the Giants since Nov. 13, 2005, when Minnesota s Marcus Robinson brought one back 86 yards for a score. After each team punted, the Giants embarked on a nine-play, 68- yard drive that included including back-to-back throws to Burress for 32 yards. The last of those gave the Giants a first down on the Jets 24- yard line. Ward ran for two yards and Manning threw to Sinorice Moss for 10 more. After Jacobs lost a yard, Manning threw to Shockey, who caught the ball on the nine-yard line, then ran to the end zone to lift the Ginats to within with 33 seconds left in the third quarter. It was Shockey s first touchdown since last Dec. 10 at Carolina. Obviously every time you score, it feels good, Shockey said. The most important part is that we won. It is very important to play like a team, especially when you are playing from behind and need to get the momentum. They definitely played a great game the first half. In the second half we just didn t panic. We just went out there and played defense and offense pretty well. The Jets appeared poised to take the lead early in the fourth quarter, but Ross stepped up and intercepted Pennington s pass for Jerricho Cotchery near the goal line. The Giants hope to get the ball at the 20-yard line, but the officials spotted the ball at the two. Tom Coughlin challenged the sot, but referee Bill Carollo upheld the call on the field. For the Giants, who seem to thrive on adversity, that setback was no problem. It took them only 4½ minutes to travel 98 yards, their longest drive since Jan. 6, 2002 against Green Bay. They were helped 8 Timex Performance Center 1925 Giants Drive East Rutherford, NJ 07073

9 by a 15-yard penalty unnecessary roughness on David Harris, who took down Ward with a horse collar tackle. Burress scored the touchdown on a spectacular 53-yard catch and run. On second-and-five, Burress caught Manning s pass at the Jets 45. He then blew past cornerback Andre Dyson with a stiff arm before sprinting to the end zone. I just practiced that back in the day when I would see Eric Dickinson do it for a long time, Burress said of the stiff arm. I just stick it out there. I know if I can get my palm on the crown of their helmet then they won t be able to get their hands on me. On the touchdown, Burress said, It was just a quick out. I was just expecting to catch the ball, get out of bounds, and convert on third down. But I just kind of caught the ball, faced the guy up, tried to stop his feet, I made him move, and then went down the sideline. They had an all-out blitz coming and we had a quick out to the left to Plaxico, and we had off coverage, Manning said. I threw that and he did the rest. If you are going to win some of these tight games, guys are going to have to step up and make a play when it s available. And that is what he did, he did something a little extra, made a guy miss and scored a touchdown. That s a big play by him. Ross made the game s final big play. He sat the entire first half for a transgression neither he nor Coughlin revealed. Kevin Dockery took his place. Aaron violated a team rule, Coughlin said. That is between he and I. It is my call. Down the road that will be the best thing that will have happened for Aaron. He will learn from that and he will go forward..i don t have anymore to say about that. It was a mistake, Ross said. I feel like I responded really well. Coach didn t treat me like I was out of the game. Every time the defense came to the sideline, I was in there with them getting the plays. I wouldn t say that I was out of the game, I just wasn t in the game out on the field. He was in the big fourth quarter. The Jets were trying to score the go-ahead touchdown when, on second down from their 39, Pennington threw a pass to Cotchery. Ross, playing in the slot, stepped, intercepted the ball, then ran to the end zone with nobody near him. We were watching film the whole week, Ross said. Coach Spags (Steve Spagnuolo) and Coach (Peter) Guinta were doing an excellent job breaking that film down for me. Once I saw that formation and the receiver ran that out route, I was able to break on it. It means a lot (to step up and make a big play). It means a lot to this team. That s one of the reasons that coach and the whole organization drafted me: to make plays. And I have to stand up to my end of the bargain. The first half was miserable for the Giants especially the last 33 seconds, when the Jets scored 10 points to take a 17-7 lead halftime lead. Ten of the 17 points were the result of Giants turnovers. Nugent s 47-yard field goal as time expired accounted for the final points in the half. The Jets took possession at the Giants 27-yard line with 23 seconds remaining, when linebacker Jonathan Vilma intercepted a Manning pass intended for Amani Toomer. The Jets ran one play before Nugent came on to kick the field goal. The Giants could have taken a knee and escaped with a seven-point deficit. I thought we had enough time to maybe throw the ball to the sideline, make a couple of plays, and maybe get a shot at a field goal, Coughlin said. That is what I was looking for. We had the timeouts. It didn t turn out that way so I take responsibility for the play call. Manning had a rough first half, completing only three of 10 passes for 22 yards, one interception and a rating of 0.0. The Jets had taken a 14-7 lead on Pennington s 16-yard touchdown pass to Brad Smith with 33 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Dockery was with Smith in the end zone, but didn t react to the ball. It was the first touchdown allowed by the Giants defense since midway through the second quarter at Washington on Sept. 23. The score capped a nine-play, 93-yard drive during which the Jets faced only one third down. It was the longest drive against the Giants defense since Washington scored on a 93-yard drive on Dec. 5, Ward s eight-yard touchdown run up the middle tied the score at 7-7 with 10:54 remaining in the second quarter. On third-and-one from the eight, Ward took a handoff and immediately picked up the first down. He seemed to be stopped at the five, but squirted through a pass of bodies and didn t stop until he had scored. It was the first rushing touchdown of Ward s four-year career. The Jets took a 7-0 lead on cornerback Kerry Rhodes touchdown on an 11-yard return of a Jacobs fumble with 8:36 remaining in the first quarter. On third-and-one from the Giants 17, Jacobs took a handoff and ran to his left. As several Jets converged to tackle Jacobs, Rhodes batted the ball out of his hands, scooped it up and ran the short distance to the end zone. At some point in that game I knew I was going to fumble because I wasn t used to carrying the ball I hadn t carried it in three weeks, Jacobs said. I m glad I got it out of my system. After that play I felt like I owed my teammates. I also felt I owed my teammates with being absent for the last three weeks. I m really happy with my performance today and to do it against the Jets means I m moving in the right direction. So are the Giants. 9 Timex Performance Center 1925 Giants Drive East Rutherford, NJ 07073

12 Tom Coughlin NFL Record: (Overall) NFL Head Coach: 16th year College: Syracuse Long regarded as one of the NFL s premier head coaches, Tom Coughlin is one of the most successful in the 86-year history of the New York Football Giants. He reached the pinnacle of his profession during the 2007 season when he led the Giants to victory in Super Bowl XLII. The Giants, big underdogs entering the game, scored two fourth quarter touchdowns to defeat the previously undefeated New England Patriots Last year, the Giants were 10-6, following marks of 8-8, 12-4, 10-6, 8-8, and 11-5 the previous five seasons. Their six-year streak without a losing record is the Giants longest since they had 10 in a row from In 2008, Coughlin led the Giants to the NFC East championship and their 12 victories were the Giants highest total since the 2000 NFC champions won 12 games. The division title was the Giants seventh since the 1970 merger. It was the eighth time in franchise history and the sixth time since the 1970 merger that the Giants finished a season with at least 12 victories. The Giants advanced to postseason play for the fourth consecutive season, the first time they accomplished that feat in their history. Coughlin also led the Jacksonville Jaguars to four consecutive postseason berths ( ) and is one of only three coaches in NFL history to accomplish that feat with two different teams. Under Coughlin, the Giants routinely establish franchise statistical milestones. In 2009, the Giants scored 402 points after scoring 425 in It was the first time in franchise history that the Giants scored at least 400 points in consecutive seasons. Rex Ryan NFL Record: (Overall) NFL Head Coach: 3rd year College: Eastern Eastern Kentucky In his first two seasons as the Jets head coach, Ryan led the team to two wildcard berths in the playoffs and to two AFC Championship games, falling just one game short of the Super Bowl both years. Ryan spent 10 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens, including as assistant head coach/defensive coordinator in During Ryan s tenure, the Ravens defense never ranked lower than sixth in the NFL. Since 1999, the Ravens rank first for fewest points allowed (17.1 per game), fewest rushing yards allowed per game (87.3), most shutouts (9), most takeaways (337), most interceptions (212), most interceptions for touchdowns (29) and third down conversion defense (33.9 per cent). They rank second in the NFL since 1999 in total defense (280.7) and fourth in sacks (416). In those 10 seasons, the Ravens allowed an NFL-low yard rushers, including none over the last 35 games. Ryan earned 2006 NFL Assistant Coach of the Year honors from Pro Football Weekly and the Pro Football Writers Association. Rex was the only remaining Ravens' assistant coach from the 2000 Super Bowl XXXV season's superb defense. He spent six seasons as the Ravens' highly successful defensive line coach and owns a distinctive NFL bloodline when it comes to coaching defenses. Rex's father is the legendary Buddy Ryan and his twin brother is Rob Ryan, the new defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys. The Ryan family is a who's-who trifecta that has coached in six Super Bowls with five different NFL teams Jets (1968, Buddy), Minnesota (1976, Buddy), Chicago (1985, Buddy), Baltimore (2000, Rex), New England (2001, 2003, Rob).
