Rhys Lounder and Daniel Mably tended the goals with skill, Martin Weir and Sebastian Butcher held up a courageous defence, ably assisted by Craig Riddle, Jake Bentley and Wonhee Lee. Ihor Gorpynyak and Tom Lowe controlled the ball through the wings (Tom scored in the first few minutes) while Michael Wedding and Jordan Kilmartin controlled centre. Sean Vial was dangerous up front. After Jordan returned to defensive sweeper and Rhys moved forward, Cabra dominated in the second half. Even with only one sub compared to six on the Blackfriars bench we ran out the game better. An unfortunate, freak own-goal by Cabra in the last half was the only difference between the two teams at the final whistle. Alas, we were unable to convert the story of the season. Better footwork needed. Oh, so close! Consultation with spectators and the referee saw Jordan Kilmartin awarded the inaugural Dominican Cup Cabra Best on Ground for his dogged determination to get the ball, and his skill at maintaining possession out of defence. Closely followed in the votes were Year 11 s Martin and Tom a good omen for the 2012 team. David Kilmartin, Coach

2 Netball Match Reports With one more game to play before Secondary Netball Finals, it has been another successful netball season for Cabra Dominican College. Our teams are gelling together as playing groups and continuous improvement is evident each and every week as a consequence of player and coach commitment. This season the Year 8 s and 9 s have had the opportunity to showcase their talent playing in higher grades. This they have done well. All Year 8 Cabra Netballers were invited to undertake a Netball Umpiring Course and the Year 8 & 9 s were involved in a specialist training session instructed by Netball SA. All girls learned something new about the ever evolving game of Netball. Training sessions have been structured each week with warm ups, skill drills, fitness activities and game plan/tactic discussions, all aimed at overall team building. These sessions have been well attended by players in Years 8 and 9. The Year 6/7 season will continue through until September, Cabra Year 7 s have shown an amazing commitment to their season and to their coaches. At the start of the season, 15 girls nominated to play Year 7 Netball. The decision to go with two teams in that grade has truly proven to be the right decision. The Year 6 s have also shown improvement in their understanding of the game of netball. Some of these girls had not played or played very little netball and are now developing into talented little players. The Primary Netball Coaches have focused on stepping, passing, ball movement, fitness, warm ups and enjoyment of the game. The Year 6 and 7 players were also involved in a Netball SA specialist training session in which all learned something new. It has been my pleasure to go and watch games on Saturdays and see game structures and coaching at trainings all come together. Most importantly I have enjoyed watching the players have fun at netball, meeting new friends and representing Cabra Dominican College with pride. Well done players and coaches for a great season! I wish you all the best of luck in your final round of games. Many thanks to parents and caregivers for their travelling, scoring, timing and coaching. Tracey Smallacombe, MS Netball Coordinator 6B Black Netball The Cabra 6B Black team lost to St John s the Baptist on Saturday 6th August. Although the girls lost, they did their very best with amazing defenders and great shooters, as always bringing their top game. All the girls were fantastic on court, especially Emma Baguley and Grace Mason who were both strong goal shooters for the entire match. Bianca Iannone, Dana Johnston and Julia Rhodes did fantastic jobs at defending and intercepting the ball, everyone doing their best to bring the ball down to our shooting end to score. Dana also did a great job as centre with Madison Kleemann. Chelsea Horsman and Millie Jaffer did fantastic jobs as WA and WD by leading the ball down to the goal third. Although the girls did not win, they walked off the courts, sung their chants and should be very proud of their achievements. GO CABRA!! Bianca Iannone (6R) 6A Netball Team with coach Alison Gaitaneris This year I have enjoyed meeting new people. Julia Rhodes (6G) School netball is also a great way to participate with friends, have fun and keep fit without being too competitive. Emma Baguley (6W) 2 P a g e

3 7A Netball On the 6th of August my team members Molly Travers, Selina Farrell, Anais Stephens, Alexis Mai, Elise Sexton, Lauren Dunk and I played against the Mitcham Primary girls. Our team started off with the centre pass and from there, both teams were getting goals, intercepting and defending. Both teams wanted to win, and so it became a very tight and intense match. We were very quick and strong with our passes which made it harder for our opposition to intercept the ball. In the third round we were down by seven goals, this was the last quarter and we wanted to make sure we got as many of those goals as we could. It was very stressful but at the same time everyone was having fun and supporting one another. Near the end of the fourth quarter we were just behind by one goal and we were on fire! We were catching up to them and it was close. There was only a goal separating us, unfortunately the Mitcham Primary girls won Overall we were happy with the great effort we put in. Thanks to all the parents and our coach Megan Milde who supported all of us and helped out in making our match possible. Orla Grant (7R) The 7A girls in action! 3 P a g e

Unfortunately we took the foot off the pedal in the second to allow CBC to be within two goals at half time. The second half was dominated by undisciplined acts, which was extremely frustrating after the high quality standard of football played in the first half. Despite only being allowed to play with 17 players on the ground for half of the third quarter, we were still able to hold a 22 point lead at the last break. It was a poor finish to the game though with more undisciplined issues allowing CBC to get on top and kick five goals to one, knocking us off by four points. I was happy with our decision making and ball movement for most of the game. Our marking contests were amazing with everyone desperate to make a contest and bring the footy to the ground giving us another chance to win the football. However we really struggled to read the ball off the packs and make the most of our hard work. This, along with the terrible lack of discipline by several players was a big reason why we didn t win the game. Hopefully the playing group will learn from this experience. We ll work hard at training on Wednesday and look forward to bouncing back positively next week. Dave Reynolds, Coach Open Boys KO Soccer Team 5 P a g e

6 Basketball News Cabra through to the SAPSASA Finals! Cabra SAPSASA boy s team have made it through to the 2011 finals after winning their zone competition. This will be held on Thursday August 25 th at Morphett Vale Stadium. Victories over Mercedes, Parkside, Littlehampton, Murray Bridge and Tintinara cemented top position in our group. Save Our Sport Canteen! The Sport Committee are concerned that we are at risk of closing the Sport Canteen if sales do not increase. Please support YOUR sport canteen by visiting when at home games. Alternatively, any suggestions or feedback can be directed to the Sport Office for consideration. This set up a showdown with the winner of the other pool of seven schools and Cabra proved steady and confident in their game plan to shut down St John s Lutheran s running game to advance to the finals stage. Cabra s boys team selected consists of Harry Reemst, Joshua Brine, Daniel Moriarty, Ned Slattery, Patrick Fairlie, Sam Thiele, Jakob Heitmann, Bradley Peters, Riley Satanek and Will Groundwater. Coles Sports for Schools Coles has launched their 2011 Sports for Schools program and we are excited to announce that Cabra Dominican College will be participating and collecting vouchers for much needed sports equipment. Vouchers are available in all Coles stores from 11 August to 19 October and we ask that you get involved to help collect vouchers for our school. Jnr Basketball Teams Dominican Cup Round - Open Basketball On Saturday 6 th August Cabra retained the Dominican Cup after its annual clash with Blackfriars. The Senior A team won convincingly to make it four wins in a row against our Dominican rival. Brett Schaumloffel is to be congratulated for winning the medal for Most Valuable Player for Cabra. The Senior B team won for a clean sweep of Senior matches. We are appealing to parents and guardians to collect as many vouchers as you can. By donating and encouraging friends and family to do the same, you are helping to provide a healthy and active education for our children. Collection boxes will be at four locations around the College - Front Office, Middle School Office, Senior School Office and Caleruega Hall (Gym). The Junior A team made it consecutive victories with a win at Cabra with the star of the match Victoria Clarke nailing six 3-pointers in an awesome shooting display. Blackfriars was successful in both the Junior B and C matches to make it an enjoyable and entertaining morning of matches. Rob Jarrad, Basketball Coordinator 6 P a g e
