The Fighting Illini own a advantage over Missouri in the annual rivalry game played in downtown St. Louis. Illinois won eight consecutive Braggin Rights from and won nine of the first 10 games in St. Louis. After Missouri won seven of nine games from , Illinois won nine in a row from , the longest winning streak in the history of the series. Mizzou then won four straight ( ), and the Illini now enter this year s contest at Scottrade Center on a four-year winning streak (2013-). Illinois has one St. Louis area product on its roster in freshman guard Mark Smith of Edwardsville High School, the 2017 Illinois Mr. Basketball recipient, Belleville News-Democrat Player of the Year and St. Louis Post-Dispatch All-Metro Team selection. This marks the ninth straight year that the St. Louis area is represented on the Illini roster. Malcolm Hill of Fairview Heights, Illinois the UI s No. 3 all-time leading scorer won four straight Braggin Rights from Prior to Hill s tenure, Tyler Griffey of Wildwood, Missouri, played in four Braggin Rights from When the Braggin Rights series began, Lou Henson was in charge of the Fighting Illini. Illini Player Trends Freshman Trent Frazier has been the Illini s leading scorer over the last three games, averaging 16.3 points (49) with 3.0 steals (9) while shooting 44.4 percent from 3-point range (8-18). Frazier has scored in double figures in four of the last five games overall. Junior Leron Black has increased his scoring average by 5.8 points this season, currently leading the Illini at 13.9 ppg (18th in Big Ten) after averaging 8.1 ppg last year. Black averaged 16.3 points (49) over a recent three-game stretch before suffering an injury during the first half Dec. 9 vs. UNLV. Black has scored in double figures in 10 of his 12 games, which included a career-long streak of seven straight that ended at UNLV. After missing the Longwood game, Black returned to action vs. New Mexico State, leading the Illini with 17 points and eight boards. Black has made at least 50 percent from the field in 10 games and is shooting 54.2 percent on the year (89th in NCAA), compared to 45.3 percent from the field last year. Black has made 83.3 percent of his free throws this season (eighth in Big Ten) after entering the year as a 70 percent career shooter at the line. Black has 18 assists in 12 games after finishing last year with 13 assists in 31 games. Junior Aaron Jordan is second on the team in scoring, averaging 12.1 points. He averaged 1.0 points last year as a sophomore, with his 11.1-point scoring increase the most of any Big Ten player. Jordan ranks second in the nation in 3-point shooting (min. 2 made/game) at 60.0 percent (30-50). He entered the year as a 30 percent career shooter from 3-point land. Jordan has averaged 13.7 points (41) and 5.0 rebounds (15) over the last three games. Jordan has made 25 of his last 38 attempts from 3-point range (65.8 percent), dating back to the second half vs. Marshall on Nov. 19. Jordan ranks fourth nationally in kenpom offensive rating at Jordan has scored in double figures in seven of the last nine games, and nine of 13 games on the season after entering the year with two games in double digits through his first 55 career games. Jordan is tied for sixth in the Big Ten with 30 made threes on the season. He has made at least three 3-pointers in five of the last nine games. 5 Junior Michael Finke is third on the team in scoring at 11.8 ppg. He averaged 6.9 points last season. Finke has scored at least 12 points in eight games. Over a three-game stretch prior to New Mexico State, Finke averaged 16.0 points (48) on 60.6 percent shooting (20-33). Finke has made six of his last 11 three-point attempts going back to the second half vs. UNLV. Finke leads the team in rebounding at 6.1 rpg (18th in Big Ten) and with 31 offensive rebounds (ninth in B1G). Finke has averaged 7.8 rebounds (31) including 3.8 offensive boards (15) over the last four games. Sophomore Kipper Nichols is the team s fourth-leading scorer with an average of 9.7 points. That is nearly double his 4.9 scoring average as a freshman. Nichols averaged 7.4 rebounds (37) over a recent five-game stretch before missing the Longwood game due to injury. Nichols was then limited to 10 minutes vs. New Mexico State. Freshman Mark Smith is fifth on the Illini in scoring at 8.6 points per game. Illinois was aggressive attacking the basket during that closing stretch, drawing seven fouls over the final six minutes that resulted in shooting from the line. The Illini defense forced 24 Austin Peay turnovers, converting those extra possessions into 23 points. Illinois also held the Governors to 41.4 percent shooting, the sixth opponent this season below 45 percent. Illinois won the battle of the boards, 38-31, outrebounding the opposition for the eighth time in 10 games. After combining for a total of 12 points over the previous three games, junior Michael Finke had a breakout performance with a game-high 17 points. Finke was 7-12 from the field and also grabbed a game-high eight boards, including four on the offensive glass. Junior Leron Black reached double figures for the seventh-straight game, scoring 16 points on 5-9 shooting. Freshman Da Monte Williams earned his first career start and finished with five points, four rebounds and three steals. He hit his biggest shot of the young season, a 3-pointer from the wing with 4:49 remaining that broke a tie and gave the Illini the lead for good. Game 9 Notes from Maryland Illinois fought back from a 22-point deficit (30-52) to take the lead late in regulation as well as overtime. The Illini fell just shy of recording the largest comeback win at home in school history. That mark remains a 21-point come-from-behind victory over Seton Hall on Dec. 9, The Illini lost in overtime despite scoring on all eight possessions of the extra period, totaling 16 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the field and 5-of-6 at the line. Illinois shot 72.7 percent from the field during the second half and overtime combined (24-33). That led to season-high 51.4 percent shooting for the game (36-70), the UI s second time above 50 percent this season. Illinois forced 25 turnovers, the highest total by a Div. I opponent since forcing Chicago State into 29 on Dec. 10, It was the most turnovers by Maryland, meanwhile, since Feb. 16, 2013 (26 vs. Duke). Illinois collected 16 steals, its highest total since recording 18 at Northwestern on Feb. 19, The Illini tied a season s best with five players scoring in double figures. Junior Leron Black led the Illini with 18 points, his second-highest scoring performance this season. Black scored 13 of his 18 after halftime on 6-7 shooting. Senior Mark Alstork tied his season high with 17 points. He accounted for nine of Illinois 16 points during overtime, hitting a pair of free throws to put the Illini ahead 77-75, draining a 3-pointer for an lead, making two more free throws for an advantage, and finally scoring on a layup to tie the game at 91 with 17 seconds remaining. Junior Aaron Jordan had 15 points, scoring in double figures for the fifth straight outing. Entering the season, Jordan had reached double digits twice in 55 games. Freshman Trent Frazier came up big, scoring 11 points while dishing out seven assists in a career-best 28 minutes. His assist total is the most by an Illini this season. 10 Game 8 Notes from Northwestern The contest featured 11 ties and eight lead changes, both highs for an Illini game this season. Illinois lost for the first time on the season when shooting more free throws than its opponent. Illinois forced 17 turnovers, equaling the most committed by Northwestern on the year. Illinois held Northwestern to just 39 percent shooting and outrebounded the Wildcats, Te Jon Lucas erupted for a career-high 14 points, passing his previous high of 12 set last year at Iowa (Feb. 18, 2017). Lucas shot 6-of-12, setting career bests for field goal made and attempted. 10 of Lucas 14 points were scored in the second half and overtime. Leron Black led the Illini with 15 points and also had a game-high seven rebounds. Mark Alstork had his best game since the season opener, finishing with 14 points and six boards. Aaron Jordan scored in double figures once again 10 points. He made his only 3-point attempt, extending his recent tear to 13-of-16 from behind the arc over the last four games. Da Monte Williams had another outstanding defensive game, tying his season high with three steals in 20 minutes. Illini Sign Five-Star Point Guard The Fighting Illini inked five-star point guard Ayo Dosunmu (EYE-oh dough-sue-moo) of Chicago Morgan Park High School to a national letter of intent during the fall signing period. Dosunmu had a dominating junior season for the Mustangs, averaging 22 points, nine assists, seven rebounds and two steals. The first-team all-state selection led Morgan Park to the IHSA state championship in class 3A, despite an injury in the semifinals that kept him out of the title game. He also helped Morgan Park to the Public League Red South title. Dosunmu shined during the summer as well, excelling at the NBPA Top 100 camp and Nike Basketball Academy and on the AAU circuit with the Mac Irvin Fire. We feel we are getting the best point guard in the country in Ayo Dosunmu, coach Brad Underwood said. He possesses a number of traits that have elevated him to elite status. He is a proven winner, a great competitor, comes from a tremendous family, is a high-character young man, and has outstanding work ethic. Along with being a perfect fit for our system and style, Ayo embraces the power of Fighting Illini basketball and joining a program with such great history and tradition. It is extremely important to him to wear the I and represent our state. Following the commitment of 2017 Illinois Mr. Basketball recipient Mark Smith just six weeks after taking over in Champaign, Underwood has made another statement on the recruiting trail by landing the top 25-ranked Dosunmu, a McDonald s All-America Game candidate and the highest-rated guard to join the Fighting Illini program since Dee Brown signed in November PRESEASON NOTES Underwood Era Underway First-year head coach Brad Underwood is ushering in a new era of Fighting Illini Basketball. Underwood was hired in March after leading Oklahoma State to a 20-win season and NCAA Tournament appearance. That followed a dominant run at Stephen F. Austin where he led the Lumberjacks to Southland Conference regular season and tournament titles in each of his three seasons, compiling an record and leading to three straight NCAA Tournament bids. Owning the third-most victories in NCAA history by a head coach through his first four years (109), Underwood is now employing his exciting systems of uptempo and positionless spread offense with pressure and deny defense in Champaign. Setting the Stage The Illini return just two starters and five scholarship players from last season s senior-laden team that compiled a record and advanced to the NIT Quarterfinals. In fact, Illinois returns just 30 percent of its points, 42 percent of its rebounds and 34 percent of its minutes from the season. The Orange and Blue will need to replace its graduated top-three scorers in Malcolm Hill (17.2 ppg, 5.1 rpg), Maverick Morgan (9.9 ppg, 6.3 rpg) and Tracy Abrams (8.6 ppg), along with Jalen Coleman-Lands (8.0 ppg). Black and Finke Lead Frontcourt A pair of fourth-year juniors in forwards Leron Black and Michael Finke are the Illini s top returners. Black started the final 27 games last season, ranking fourth on the team in scoring with an average of 8.1 points while leading the Illini in rebounds with 6.3 per contest (14th in Big Ten). The Memphis native recorded three double-doubles on the year including two during the NIT and scored in double figures 13 times. Always active around the basket, Black will look to increase his rebounding and scoring production this season. 11 Finke was the UI s sixth-leading scorer a year ago at 6.9 points per game. He also led the team in 3-point shooting at 41.1 percent. A tireless worker in the weight room, Finke now carries a muscular 235-pound frame. With his shooting ability and offensive skill set, he has the chance to excel in the pinch post. Lucas Emerges at Point The Illini s lone true freshman last season, Te Jon Lucas eventually took over the reigns at the point guard position. He started the final 15 games and ended up leading the team in assists on the season (3.1 apg). Lucas is a tenacious defender who provides energy on the court. He also will be counted on to provide leadership to his teammates. Nichols and Jordan Bolster UI Depth Kipper Nichols had a number of bright spots during his shortened redshirt freshman campaign last season. He averaged 5.3 points and 3.3 rebounds during conference play, breaking out with 13 points in a home win over Michigan and scoring a career-high 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting versus Minnesota. Nichols is a strong, physical player who can guard multiple positions. Aaron Jordan had a great offseason and has worked hard to challenge for a spot in the rotation entering his junior season. Jordan has made gains in all areas of strength and conditioning and has the ability to knock down shots and defend. Grad Transfer Alstork a Proven Scorer One Illini who could help replace the loss of scoring production is senior Mark Alstork. The Wright State graduate ranked third in the Horizon League last year, averaging 19.0 points. He netted double figures in 27 of 32 games, with 17 outings of 20-plus points. He also set a school record with 176 free throws while draining 70 threepointers. While known for his scoring, Alstork will be counted on to help the Illini in all areas and has that ability as he also averaged 4.7 rebounds and 3.5 assists last season for the Raiders. Freshman Influx Added to the mix of returnees is a talented and promising five-player freshman class. Underwood s first recruit was a big one in Edwardsville s Mark Smith. The first Illinois Mr. Basketball to select the Fighting Illini since 2010, Smith averaged 21.9 points, 8.2 rebounds, 8.4 assists and 2.1 steals as a senior. Formerly a multi-sport athlete, he did not focus solely on basketball until his senior year of high school. Smith is a powerful, skilled player with multi-positional skills and strong work ethic. The Illini inked one of the top players in the state of Florida in top-100 recruit Trent Frazier. He averaged 27.6 points, 6.3 rebounds and 4.4 assists as a senior. Frazier was an electric scorer in high school, tallying a school-record 52 points in a game and leaving as Wellington High s all-time leading scorer with 1,742 points in three varsity seasons. Frazier has great quickness and deep shooting range. The third guard in the recruiting class is Da Monte Williams from Peoria Manual. The son of former Illini All-American Frank Williams, Da Monte is coming off a torn ACL that abruptly cut short his senior season after three games. He averaged 15.3 points, 5.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists as a junior, leading Manual to a third-place finish in state. Williams has outstanding passing ability and vision and the length and competitiveness to be a strong defender. Underwood signed two frontcourt players during the summer. Greg Eboigbodin is an athletic, 6-9 forward from Nigeria who arrived in the U.S. for high school. He attended University of Detroit Jesuit High, where he first began playing basketball. Eboigbodin improved each year and ended up averaging 13.8 points, 13.4 rebounds and 1.5 blocks while shooting 66 percent from the field as a senior. He has added 25 pounds to his frame since June while continuing to learn and grow each day. Matic Vesel is a skilled, 6-10 forward from Slovenia. He has played with the Slovenian youth national teams, participating in the FIBA U18 European Championships in 2016 and the FIBA U20 European Championships this past summer. Vesel arrived on campus in August and joined the Illini at the beginning of the fall semester. Vesel has strong fundamentals and the ability to pass and shoot. He will look to add muscle and weight while experiencing strength training for the first time. Walkon Depth Rounding out the roster are five walkons who will push the team in practice every day and participate on scout team to aid in game-plan preparations. Tyler Underwood has followed his father in joining the Illini program and is sitting out this season as a transfer. Tyler has a thorough understanding of the offense and defense and is a coach on the floor for his teammates in practice while they are learning the systems. Drew Cayce practiced with the Illini guards while sitting out as a transfer from Creighton and has returned for his second season. Clayton Jones also is in his second year, but he will miss the season recovering from a torn ACL. He arrives in Champaign as the third-winningest head coach in NCAA history through four seasons, totaling 109 career victories. Underwood came to Illinois from Oklahoma State, where he led OSU to a 20-win season and NCAA Tournament appearance. The Cowboys had one of the most exciting and prolific offenses in the country, ranking fifth in the NCAA in scoring (85.7 points per game) and leading the nation in adjusted offensive efficiency (kenpom). The Cowboys ranked 14th nationally in 3-point field goal percentage (.402), fourth in the country in offensive rebounding percentage (.383) and fourth in the NCAA in free throw percentage (.789). Oklahoma State finished fifth in the Big 12 with a 9-9 conference record in a season where the Big 12 was rated as the top conference in the nation. That was a dramatic improvement for the Cowboys, who went 3-15 in league play a year ago. Oklahoma State came on strong during the second half of the season, winning 10 of 11 games from Jan. 21-Feb. 25, which included a pair of five-game winning streaks. Underwood arrived in Stillwater following a dominant run at Stephen F. Austin where he led the Lumberjacks to Southland Conference regular season and tournament titles in each of his three seasons. Underwood compiled an record at SFA, tied with Brad Stevens (Butler, ) for the most wins by a head coach in his first three seasons at an NCAA school. He led SFA to a 28-6 overall record and NCAA Round of 32 appearance in The 14th-seeded Lumberjacks rolled past No. 3 West Virginia in the first round, 70-56, before narrowly missing a trip to the Sweet 16 with a defeat to No. 6 Notre Dame in the second round. That Stephen F. Austin squad was efficient on both sides of the ball, ranking 57th nationally on offense and 38th on defense. The Lumberjacks averaged 80.2 points accompanied by highpressure defense that forced the highest turnover rate in the country (.259). Underwood s second SFA team went 29-5 in 2015, also advancing to the NCAA Tournament. The Lumberjacks ranked seventh in the nation in field goal percentage (.487) and led the NCAA in assists (18.7 apg). His debut season in Nacogdoches in 2014 included a 29-game winning streak and culminated in a 32-3 record and NCAA UNDERWOOD S DIVISION I HEAD COACHING RECORD Round of 32 appearance after a victory over No. 5 seed VCU in the opening round. Underwood earned the Joe B. Hall award, given to the nation s top first-year coach. Prior to taking over at Stephen F. Austin, Underwood served the 2013 season as associate head coach at South Carolina under Frank Martin. He went to Columbia with Martin after serving on his bench for five seasons as an assistant at Kansas State, with his final season elevated to associate head coach. Underwood spent his first year at K-State in the role of director of operations for then-head coach Bob Huggins. Underwood had two head coaching stints in the junior college ranks, compiling a record in three seasons at Daytona Beach ( ) and a mark in four years at Dodge City ( ). In between those opportunities, Underwood was entrenched in the state of Illinois for 10 seasons, as an assistant coach for Jim Kerwin at Western Illinois from Underwood is a December 1986 graduate of Kansas State University. He played in Manhattan for the legendary Jack Hartman, K-State s all-time winningest coach. Former Illinois head coach Lon Kruger also played and coached for Hartman at Kansas State. Underwood began his college career at Hardin-Simmons, where he later worked as a graduate assistant. Hardin-Simmons was the first college job for Lou Henson, the Fighting Illini s all-time winningest coach, and whose name permanently adorns the court at State Farm Center. Brad and his wife, Susan, have a son, Tyler, and two daughters, Katie and Ashley. Tyler also is a member of the Fighting Illini basketball team. It was a physical contest from start to finish with both teams battling foul trouble throughout the night. The game featured a total of 59 fouls, resulting in a combined 63 free throw attempts. Illinois jumped out to a lead but found itself trailing at halftime for the first time on the year after the Eagles outscored the hosts over the final eight minutes of the first half. The Illini turned up the defense intensity after intermission and opened with a an 11-2 run to retake the lead, The Orange and Blue added a 9-0 run on four points by Kipper Nichols and five by Aaron Jordan to move ahead by 14 points with 13 minutes remaining, and the lead stayed in double figures the rest of the night. The Illini made a season-high 12 three-pointers against N.C. Central s zone defense, recording a season-best 20 assists on 28 baskets. A key stat once again was turnovers.
