THE MATCH-UP Kansas City and St. Louis will square off in the latest installment of the Governor s Cup series when the Chiefs and Rams duel in the final preseason contest for both clubs on Friday at the Edward Jones Dome. The Chiefs have held a firm grip on the Governor s Cup since Dick Vermeil became Kansas City s head coach in The Chiefs are 4-1 in preseason and regular season play against St. Louis under Vermeil, including a four game-winning streak. That 4-1 mark includes three straight preseason victories against the Rams, as well as a regular season triumph against St. Louis at Arrowhead in Despite solid performances from its first-team players, Kansas City is still seeking its first preseason win after suffering a narrow home loss vs. Seattle (8/27). St. Louis owns a 1-1 preseason record entering its Monday Night Football contest at Detroit (8/29). Both clubs are expected to utilize this contest in order to get one final look at their personnel before the NFL s final cutdown date on Saturday, September 3rd. The Chiefs open the 2005 regular season with a home date at Arrowhead vs. the N.Y. Jets (9/11). St. Louis begins the 2005 regular season at San Francisco (9/11). In recent seasons, the state of Missouri s two NFL franchises have both been synonymous with high-scoring games and high-octane offense. Over the past four seasons, no team has scored more points than Kansas City (1,754), good for an average of 27.4 ppg. Over that same four-year span, St. Louis ranks fourth in the league in scoring with 1,585 points, an average of 24.8 ppg. QB Trent Green has presided over the Chiefs opulent offensive attack, throwing for 16,103 yards since coming to KC from St. Louis in a 2001 trade. The only NFL signal caller who has thrown for more yards over that four-year period is Indianapolis QB Peyton Manning (17,155). Both clubs also have a pair of talented RBs at their disposal. In KC, three-time Pro Bowl RB Priest Holmes posted five 100-yard rushing games in 2004, while RB Larry Johnson (D1-03) registered three 100- yard outings a year ago. In the most recent meeting, KC collected a win at Arrowhead (12/8/02) in Dick Vermeil s first regular season meeting with the Rams after guiding that club to a win in SB XXXIV. The Rams last regular season win in the series was a 16-0 decision (9/25/94). The Chiefs have pummeled their in-state, I-70 rivals by a combined margin in the Rams last two regular season visits to Arrowhead, including that victory (12/8/02). The most prolific scoring game in the series was a Chiefs win at Arrowhead (10/22/00), a contest which snapped a six-game Rams winning streak. Those 54 points were the fourth-highest tally in KC history and the second-highest total ever compiled by the club at Arrowhead. Those 88 total points were also the second-highest total ever scored in a Chiefs game. Kansas City also won at St. Louis by a count (10/26/97) under head coach Marty Schottenheimer in a game that marked Vermeil s only regular season outing vs. the Chiefs. The two clubs will meet again in the regular season at St. Louis in 2006.

He is one of just four coaches in NFL history to lead two different teams to the Super Bowl and has twice been named NFL Coach of the Year. The Calistoga, California native began his NFL coaching career with the L.A. Rams ( 69, 71-73) serving as the team s special teams, RBs, and QBs coach and offensive coordinator. During his tenure as head coach in Philadelphia ( 76-82), he compiled a record. In 78, Vermeil guided the Eagles to their first playoff appearance in 12 years. He then led the 80 Eagles to a 12-4 record to earn a trip to Super Bowl XV. Vermeil returned to the sidelines as the head coach of St. Louis for three seasons ( 97-99), guiding the Rams to a 13-3 record in 99, concluding the year with a win in Super Bowl XXXIV. VERMEIL FAST FACTS His 34 regular season wins with the Chiefs are the third-highest total in team history by a head coach behind only Hank Stram (124) and Marty Schottenheimer (101). Has guided the Chiefs to a (.625) regular season record over the past two seasons. New England (28-4), Philadelphia (25-7), Indianapolis (24-8) and Pittsburgh (21-11) are the only clubs with better records over that span. Marty Schottenheimer (177), Bill Parcells (154), Bill Cowher (130), Joe Gibbs (130) and Mike Holmgren (125) are the only active NFL head coaches with more regular season wins than Vermeil (110). Martz then coached QBs and WRs at Arizona in 83 and 86-87, in addition to two stints as Arizona State s offensive coordinator in 84 and from Martz played TE and LB at San Diego Mesa CC, UC-Santa Barbara and Fresno State. WHAT VERMEIL IS SAYING... On the team s chances this year: I believe this should be the best football team we ve had since I ve been here, especially on defense. Whether it will be or not will be dependent upon how we as coaches coach and how players respond to training camp. On the offense: I think if this offensive team was in one of the big markets it would be different. We set numerous team records. If you re in New York or Chicago that might be a big thing, but we re not really too concerned who gets the credit. We ve just got to get so we re a better football team and if the offense has to get better for us to be a better football team than they have to get better. The challenge when you re the best is to get better. There are areas of our game that can get better. On the defense: I don t think I ve ever had as much talent on defense as we have right now. We re so much further ahead defensively than we were last year at the same time. Even on the mental side of it as the physical side. It s not a new defense, it s the better understanding of it. It s the growth of the personnel that was here; it s the addition of the personnel that we brought in including the draft choice. It s impressive. We will be better. I don t know how much better, but we will be better. On QB Trent Green s longevity and productivity: That s a real testament to the offensive line. Obviously if you go through four knee operations and then come onto an NFL team and the offensive line is not really sound and really good, it s probably going to give you fits. Our offensive line happens to be a really good offensive line. That s helped. The other thing is the philosophy within the overall passing game. It s a very quick, rhythmic passing game and a guy with experience knows where he s going with the ball quicker. He doesn t hang on to it very much. So, I think it all fits together. On the Chiefs LBs: I ve never been on the field with this many talented LBs, anywhere. How long it s going to take them to play football I don t know, but they look good. Derrick Johnson has done awfully well as a rookie in picking things up. He s really done a good job. He s going to be very competitive to start early.

Over the past two seasons, the Chiefs have registered 63 rushing TDs, tying the Packers for the best two-year total in NFL history. The Chiefs led the NFL in total offense for the first time in 2004, averaging yards per game. KC also ranked in the NFL s top five in each of the four major offensive categories for the first time in team history in 2004: scoring offense (2nd 30.2 ppg), total offense (1st ypg), pass offense (4th ypg) and rush offense (5th ypg). In total, the Chiefs established or tied 19 single-season team records in 2004, including marks for completions (370), passing yards (4,406), passing first downs (228) and third-down conversions (47.2%). The club s 30.2 ppg scoring average ranked second in the league. In addition, the Chiefs scored 30+ points in five consecutive games, a first in team history. KC s offense also averaged 54.1 advances per game (rushes and completions), the best mark in the league in The Chiefs have added several new faces to their defensive unit in 2005, headlined by a trio of former Pro Bowl performers. CB Patrick Surtain was acquired in an off-season trade with Miami and earned two Pro Bowl berths ( ) with that club. 4 QUARTERBACKS Kansas City returns all three of its signal callers from 2004, including Trent Green who has started 64 consecutive games for the club dating back to Green ranks sixth in NFL history with a 87.9 career rating, a figure that is the top mark in KC annals. Todd Collins is in his eighth season with Kansas City and his fifth campaign as the club s top backup to Green. Damon Huard enters his second campaign with the Chiefs and served as the club s third QB in Jonathan Quinn, who was with Kansas City for two seasons ( ), returns to the Chiefs after spending the 2004 campaign with Chicago. Rookie James Kilian (D7-05) is in his first NFL camp. QB TRENT GREEN Has hit 15 of 22 passes for 167 yards with two TDs and INT for a rating in the 2005 preseason. Has started 64 cons. games with KC, completing 1,282 of 2,072 passes (61.87%) for 16,103 yards with 94 TDs and 66 INTs, for a 87.9 rating. His 16,103 yards passing with the Chiefs are the third-best mark in team history. He needs just 1,175 more yards to overtake QB Bill Kenney (17,277) for second in franchise annals. Ranks first in team history with an 87.9 passer rating, completion percentage, yard completions, a 7.77-yard average gain and 20 career 300-yard passing days. His 94 TDs with KC are the third-highest total in Chiefs history, needing 12 more to pass QB Bill Kenney (105) for second. Has led the Chiefs to 34 wins, tying Bill Kenney for the second-most by a starting QB in team history. His 16,103 passing yards since joining KC in 2001 rank second in the NFL behind only IND QB Peyton Manning (17,155). Set career highs for completions (369), attempts (556), passing yards (4,591), completion percentage (66.37%) and touchdowns (27) in Is the only QB to own an active streak of three consecutive seasons with a passer rating and is only the seventh player in league history to accomplish that feat. Also has 25 carries for 151 yards with one TD. RUNNING BACKS Three-time Pro Bowler Priest Holmes returns after missing the final eight games of 2004 with a strained right MCL. Holmes is the all-time leading rusher in KC history with 5,482 yards and needs 91 more rushing attempts to bypass Christian Okoye (1,246) for the most carries in franchise annals. Larry Johnson (D1-03) will serve as Holmes primary backup once again in 2005 after registering 581 yards, three 100-yard games and nine TDs in Twotime Pro Bowl FB Tony Richardson is one of the league s best at his craft. Other players in the backfield with previous NFL camp experience include: Dee Brown (360 yards with CAR in 2002), NFLEL veteran McKenzi Smith and Ronnie Cruz, who can play either RB or FB. RB PRIEST HOLMES Has rushed 17 times for 68 yards (4.0 avg.) in the 2005 preseason. Since joining KC as an UFA in 2001 he has started 54 games, rushing 1,156 times for 5,482 yards (4.7 avg.) with 70 TDs and catching 225 passes for 2,163 yards (9.6 avg.) with seven TDs. Second-year CB Benny Sapp has seen extensive action in the nickel during camp. Recently-acquired veterans CB Ashley Ambrose (192 career games) and CB Dwayne Washington (175 career games) give the Chiefs experienced depth to go with rookie CB Alphonso Hodge (D5b-03). S Greg Wesley (D3-00) is making the move to FS in 2005 after starting 72 games at SS over the past five seasons. S Jerome Woods (D1-96), who earned a Pro Bowl berth in 2003, is rebounding from a knee injury that cost him the final six games of 2004 and works behind Wesley. S Shaunard Harts provides depth at safety along with William Bartee (D2-00), who makes the move to that position after working at CB the past five seasons. 7 THE LAST TIME - PRESEASON Chiefs 24, Rams 7 August 23, 2004 Arrowhead Stadium 75,428 ST. LOUIS KANSAS CITY Kansas City claimed a convincing 24-7 Governorʼs Cup win over its cross-state rival from St. Louis thanks to a stifling defensive performance. The Chiefs defense finished the evening with two INTs, including one that was returned for a 60-yard TD by LB Shawn Barber. Kansas City also racked up 4.0 sacks and limited the Rams to just 74 rushing yards. After forcing St. Louis to punt on its opening possession, the Chiefs offense took over and produced a textbook scoring march. QB Trent Green began the possession with a 21-yard completion to WR Marc Boerigter and finished the drive by completing four of five passes for 45 yards. RB Priest Holmes capped the drive with a two-yard TD dive over the offensive line. Holmes accounted for 38 yards on the drive, including 27 yards on the ground. The Chiefs defense limited the Rams to just 34 total yards on their first three possessions, putting the Kansas City offense in position to take a 14-0 lead at the 9:31 mark of second quarter when RB Derrick Blaylock capped a 10-play, 55-yard scoring march with a one-yard TD run. Collins promptly drove the Chiefs downfield on a 13-play, 57-yard drive that consumed 5:50 off the clock and included a key 20-yard completion to rookie WR Samie Parker. K Morten Andersenʼs 28-yard FG gave Kansas City a comfortable 17-0 lead with 1:53 left in the first half. St. Louis made its first trek into enemy territory after KC was flagged for unnecessary roughness, but the Chiefs defense immediately made amends for that faux pas. LB Shawn Barber picked off a QB Marc Bulger pass that was intended for RB Arlen Harris and raced 60 yards into the end zone to give the Chiefs a commanding 24-0 advantage at halftime as the Chiefs owned a 200-to-68-yard advantage in terms of total offense at the intermission. Kansas City couldnʼt carry over its momentum to its opening possession of the second half and was forced to punt, setting up the only St. Louis score of the eveving. RB Steven Jackson was the Rams workhorse on a 12-play, 61-yard drive that was capped when the rookie powered into the end zone from six yards out, closing the scoring gap to Kansas City appeared to have forced a sack-and-strip fumble earlier in the possession, but CB Julian Battle was flagged for illegal contact downfield, nullifying the turnover and giving the Rams a first down. Neither team mounted a serious scoring threat for the remainder of the evening. LOUIS KANSAS CITY The Chiefs rolled up 49 points for the second week in a row as KC claimed the Governor s Cup with a convincing victory over the in-state rival St. Louis Rams. KC s defense and special teams accounted for 21 points. WR Dante Hall became the first player in team history and the 21st in NFL history to record two kick return scores in a single contest, getting TDs on both a PR and KOR. After St. Louis got off to a 3-0 lead, Hall took the ensuing kickoff back for an 88-yard TD. Then on the Rams next possession, KC s defense got into the scoring column as DE Duane Clemons recorded a 42-yard fumble return for a TD. On the play DE Eric Hicks recorded the first of the Chiefs 6.0 sacks when he stripped Rams QB Jamie Martin and helped put the Chiefs ahead An eight-yard TD catch by WR Isaac Bruce brought the Rams within 14-10, but it would be as close as they would get. Hall would return a punt 86 yards for a TD, while RB Priest Holmes would rush for two scores to make the count at halftime. Holmes finished with 132 rushing yards, his fourth-straight 100- yard game. Kansas City s defense took it from there, pitching a secondhalf shutout for the second straight week. DT John Browning led the way with a pair of sacks and both LB Marvcus Patton and SS Greg Wesley recorded interceptions. St. Louis third-rated passing offense was held to just 218 yards and 2000 NFL MVP RB Marshall Faulk was limited to just 13 rushing yards and 35 yards through the air.
