3 Last Game Hines Leads Broncs to Win Over North Dakota November 29, 2014 at Jon M. Huntsman Center Junior Shaquille Hines scored a season-high 24 points to lead the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men s basketball team past the University of North Dakota (UND) Hines led the Broncs (4-2) by going a career-best 12-for- 13 from the field with a season-high eight rebounds, a season-high tying four assists and one block. Sophomore Janari Joesaar scored 20 points with six rebounds, two assists and one steal. Senior Shaquille Boga scored 15 points with four rebounds, four assists and two steals. Jaron Nash led UND (2-4) with 15 points,13 rebounds and two steals. Estan Tyler also scored 15 points. The Broncs and UND traded baskets in the early going, with the Broncs going up 11-6 on a jumper by freshman Dan Kimasa with 10:57 remaining in the first half. UND followed with a 15-2 run over the next four minutes to go up on an Tyler three-pointer. UND extended their lead to on a Lenny Antwi jumper, but the Broncs responded with a 9-0 run to pull within one on a layup by junior Everett Osborne. Huntsman Center Four Broncs reached double-figures in scoring, but the University of Texas-Pan American men s basketball team fell to the Alabama State University Hornets Sophomore Janari Joesaar led the Broncs (3-2) with his third doubledouble, scoring a career-high 28 points while hitting a career-high nine baskets in 16 attempts, including a career-high four three-pointers in seven attempts, to go with a 6-for-6 performance from the line, a game-high 11 rebounds, three assists and two steals. Senior Shaquille Boga scored 16 points with a team-high six assists, two rebounds and two steals. Junior Shaquille Hines scored 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting with four rebounds, two blocks and one steal. In his first-career start, freshman Isaiah Hobbs scored a career-high 10 points while going 8-for-12 from the line and adding five rebounds, two assists, one block and three steals. Jamel Waters led five Hornets (2-2) in double-figures scoring with 14 points, four rebounds, eight assists and three steals. Wendell Lewis also scored 14 points, doing so with nine rebounds, three assists and three blocks. Bobby Brown scored 13 points with seven rebounds and three assists. Luther Page scored 13 points with three rebounds, one block and two steals. DeMarcus Robinson scored 10 points with four rebounds, two assists and two steals. The Hornets took an early 10-6 lead, but a layup by Hobbs and a dunk by Hines tied the game. The Hornets followed with a 9-3 run to go up six, but the Broncs went on an 8-0 run to take their first lead when a Hines jumper made it with 11:17 remaining in the first half. The Hornets responded by scoring the next nine points as part of a 27-8 run to go up eight minutes later. Huntsman Center The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs men's basketball team fell to the University of Utah Utes for their first loss of the season. The Broncs (3-1) were led by senior Shaquille Boga as he finished with 16 points, three assists and three rebounds, while going 2-for-4 from behind the three-point line. Sophomore Janari Joesaar added 11 points with four rebounds and four assists and junior Shaquille Hines chipped in eight points. The Utes (3-1) were paced by Kyle Kuzma who had 14 points, six rebounds and three assists. Delon Wright chipped in 12 points while Jakob Poeltl added eight points and 10 rebounds. Boga got the Broncs on the board with a jumper in the early minutes of the game and then gave them the lead with a layup that made it 4-2 with 17:39 left in the first half. A pair of free throws by Boga gave the Broncs the lead before the Utes went on a 22-4 run to grab the lead with 6:21 left in the half. Joesaar knocked down his first field goal of the game with 2:49 left in the first half as the Broncs went into halftime trailing The Broncs shot 42 percent from the floor in the first half while the Utes shot 63 percent. Freshman Dan Kimasa got the scoring started for the Broncs in the second half as he knocked down a pair of free throws. Later in the second half, Hines hit a jumper that made it with 14:46 as the Utes went on to put the game away. 4 Results Against Opponent UTPA vs. University of Houston... Series Notes: The Broncs led as late as the 11:35 mark of the second half and were tied with 9:21 to go, but fell to the Cougars (11/11/13) Justin Leathers scored 10 points on 5-of-8 shooting with a team-high seven rebounds while Josh Cleveland scored eight points on 4-of-5 shooting off the bench at Houston (1/3/13) Only once have the Broncs and Cougars played twice in the same season, playing twice in five days, first in Houston s Bluebonnet Classic, and then in Edinburg during the season. Last Meeting (11/11/13) 1 2 OT 2OT Final.. Houston at UTPA Nov. 11, 2013 at UTPA Fieldhouse The Broncs battled back from a 12-point deficit late in the first half to take the lead, but the Cougars closed the game on an 18-6 run over the final nine minutes to win The Cougars led with 3:03 remaining in the first on a Brandon Morris layup. The lead was still at 11 with 12 seconds left after a pair of Danuel House free throws, but junior Christian Hildebrant made a three from NBA range just before time expired to kick-off a 15-2 run that ended with senior Justin Leathers sinking a pair of free throws to give the Broncs a lead at the 15:47 mark. The teams traded baskets from there, with the Broncs going up on a jumper by senior Josh Cleveland, on a layup by junior Shaquille Boga, and on a layup by graduate student Javorn Farrell. After a House layup and a pair of TaShawn Thomas free throws put the Cougars ahead, Farrell hit two free throws with 9:21 on the clock to tie the game at A Thomas layup with 9:03 left kicked off the Cougars game ending run. Down with six minutes left, the Broncs got layups from senior Lauri Toivonen and sophomore Shaquille Hines to pull within 71-65, but Jherrod Stiggers hit a three and L.J. Rose made three free throws as the Cougars scored the final six points of the game. Farrell led the Broncs with 16 points. Boga scored 15 points with three assists. Leathers also reached double-figures, scoring 10 points while tying for the team-high with seven rebounds. Four Cougars reached double-figures in scoring, led by Thomas, who scored 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting with 14 rebounds, two blocks and one steal. Rose scored 16 points with six assists and three steals. House scored 15 points with five rebounds and three assists. Stiggers finished with 11 points. The Broncs and Cougars traded baskets early in the first half, with the Broncs tying it at at the halfway point. The Cougars followed with a 19-7 run to take their largest lead of the game at 12. Series Notes: The Broncs came back from down 14 to go up one before falling by four (11/8/13) In their meeting on Dec. 4, 2004, Sergio Sanchez scored 28 points, including a 13-for-14 performance from the foul line, tied for the fourth best single-game performance in program history, to go with five rebounds, and two assists (12/4/04) Derek Wright went 8-for-9 from the foul line, tied for the eighth best single-game output in program history, against the Bearkats (12/7/90). SHSU at UTPA Nov. 8, 2013 at UTPA Fieldhouse Down 14 with just over eight minutes remaining, the Broncs went on a furious rally to pull within one in the final seconds before ultimately falling to the Bearkats Down 57-43, senior Justin Leathers made a jumper, sophomore Shaquille Hines made a pair of free throws and junior Shaquille Boga nailed a jumper to bring the Broncs within eight. The Broncs and Bearkats mostly traded baskets and free throws over the next seven minutes, but the Broncs outscored the Bearkats to pull within on a pair of Leathers free throws with 19.3 seconds remaining. After Jabari Peters hit a pair of free throws, senior Hurley Johnson made a layup to again bring the Broncs within one with 7.1 seconds left. With 6.0 seconds left, Peters went back to the line, and after making the first shot, missed the second, but Kaheem Ransom came up with the offensive rebound and made two free throws with 1.5 seconds left to put the game on ice. Four Broncs reached double-figures in scoring, led by Boga, who scored a career-high 17 points on 7-of-14 shooting to go with three rebounds and two steals. Leathers scored 12 points with six rebounds and one block. Johnson scored 12 points with three rebounds and one steal. Hines tied his career-high, scoring 10 points with a career-high seven rebounds. Peters led all scorers with 24 points while going 13-for-18 from the foul line. Ransom scored 23 points while going 8-for-11 from the line. As a team, the Bearkats went 30-for-50 (.600) from the foul line while the Broncs went 19-for-29 (.655). The Broncs led almost wire-to-wire in the first half, going up as many as eight at 12-4 on a threepointer and a layup by freshman Alex Majewski. The Bearkats tied the game at on a Ransom free throw with 43 seconds left. The Bearkats took an immediate lead in the second half on a Michael Holyfield layup, but the Broncs came back to go up four at on a Leathers jumper with 16:37 to go. The Bearkats responded with a 24-6 run over the next 8:19, going 8-for-11 from the field, including 3-for-5 from behind the arc, plus 5-for-7 from the line, and getting 12 points from Ransom, to take the lead. 5 Broncs Team Notes University of North Dakota (11/29) The Broncs won a neutral site match over North Dakota, Junior Shaquille Hines was named one of the top three performers in the NCAA of the day by ESPN after scoring a season-high 24 points on a career-best 12-of-13 shooting with a season-high eight rebounds, a season-high tying four assists, and one block. Sophomore Janari Joesaar posted his fourth 20+ points game, finishing with 20 on 6-of-11 shooting, plus 7-of-8 from the line. He also had six rebounds, two assists and one steal. Senior Shaquille Boga scored 15 points with four rebounds, five assists and two steals. Alabama State University (11/28) The Broncs dropped a neutral site match to the Hornets, Four Broncs reached double-figures in scoring, including sophomore Janari Joesaar (28), senior Shaquille Boga (16), junior Shaquille Hines (15) and freshman Isaiah Hobbs (10). Joesaar recorded his third double-double with career-highs in points (28), field goals (nine) and three-pointers (four), as well as a game-high 11 rebounds, three assists and two steals. In his first start, Hobbs set career-highs in points (10), free throws made (eight), free throws attempted (12), rebounds (five), assists (two), blocks (one) and steals (three). Freshman Dan Kimasa had a career-high four blocks. University of Utah (11/26) The Broncs lost their first game of the season, to the Utes. The Broncs led by as many as three at with 13:15 left. Senior Shaquille Boga scored a game-high 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including 2-of-4 from behind the arc. Texas A&M-Kingsville (11/22) The Broncs are off to their first 3-0 start since after an win over the Javelinas. The Broncs shot a season-best.520 (26-50) from the field and.533 (8-15) from behind the arc. Sophomore Janari Joesaar scored a career-high 27 points while making a career-high three three-pointers and a career-high 12 free throws. He also had a team-high eight rebounds, four assists, one block and two steals. Junior Shaquille Hines scored 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting with six rebounds. Two other Broncs reached double-figures in scoring, as senior Shaquille Boga scored 12 points and graduate student Shaun Noriega scored 11 points. UTSA (11/17) The Broncs are off to their first 2-0 start since following a win over the Roadrunners. The starting lineup accounted for all of the Broncs scoring, as sophomore Janari Joesaar scored 17 points, senior Shaquille Boga had 16 points, junior Shaquille Hines scored 15 points, freshman Dan Kimasa had 10 points, and graduate student Shaun Noriega scored five points. The starters combined to shoot.479 (23-48) from the field. Joesaar posted his second-straight double-double with a careerhigh 18 rebounds, a career-high four assists, a career-high six blocks and one steal. The 18 rebounds are the most by a Broncs player since before the season. The six blocks tie for the seventh-highest single-game total in program history, and the highest total since Jan. 21, 2004, when Ryan Lange had six blocks against UT Arlington. Boga went 6-for-9 from the field, including 2-for-3 from behind the arc. The last of those threes was the game-winner, breaking a tie with 40 seconds left. The Broncs finished with 12 blocked shots, the fourth highest total in program history and the most in a game since Feb. 8, 1972, when the Broncs had a program record 21 blocks against Lamar. It was the first time the Broncs have had more than six blocks in a game since before the season. No. 21 Wayland Baptist (11/14) The Broncs opened the season with an win over the Pioneers, the No. 21 ranked team in the NAIA. It is the first time the Broncs have opened the season with a win since the season. Five Broncs reached double-figures in scoring, led by sophomore Janari Joesaar, who posted his first double-double with careerhighs in points (20), rebounds (13), assists (3), blocks (1) and steals (2) in his Broncs debut. Junior Shaquille Hines scored 15 points with three rebounds, a game-high tying four assists and one blocks. In his first collegiate regular season game, freshman Moe McDonald scored 14 points on 5-of-5 shooting, including 2-of-2 from behind the arc while hitting both of his free throw attempts. He also had two rebounds, two assists and one steal. In his first official game action since Dec. 5, 2012, graduate student Shaun Noriega scored 13 points, all of which came in the second half, on 5-of-10 shooting, including 3-of-6 from behind the arc, to go with a rebound, an assist and a steal in 25 minutes. In his Broncs debut, junior Andreas Bigum scored 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting with four rebounds (three offensive). Texas A&M International (11/8) The Broncs beat the Dustdevils in their lone exhibition, Sophomore Janari Joesaar scored a game-high 26 points on 7- of-12 shooting, including 3-for-6 from behind the arc, plus 9-for-10 from the line, with a game-high tying eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. Junior Everett Osborne scored 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting plus 6-for-7 from the line with three assists and two steals. Junior Shaquille Hines scored 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting, plus 6-of-8 from the line with a game-high tying eight rebounds, two assists, one block and a game-high four steals. Career: Hipsher's knowledge and basketball acumen helped turn Alabama into one of the toughest defensive units in the country, while his eye for talent helped the Tide land a top-five recruiting class. In , Hipsher helped guide the Tide to a record (12-7 SEC) and the NIT Quarterfinals. In , Alabama held 31 of its 33 opponents below their scoring average, allowing an average of 58.1 points per game. The Tide reached the 20-win mark for the second straight season, finishing with a record, and made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since In his second season at UA, Hipsher helped turn a team with an early 5-5 record into one that amassed a record and captured the 2011 Southeastern Conference Western Division title. That same squad made UA's first postseason appearance in four seasons and advanced to the NIT Championship Game. The veteran coach came to Alabama after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at the University of South Florida (USF). Prior to joining the USF staff, Hipsher was an assistant coach at Arkansas, where he helped the Razorbacks to back-to-back NCAA Tournament berths. Before serving as an assistant and associate at the high major ranks, Hipsher spent 15 years as a head coach. He started with four seasons at Division III Wittenberg, where he compiled a (.843) record, four conference championships and three NCAA Tournament appearances. He led his team to the 1990 Elite 8 in his first season, earning NCAC Coach of the Year and NCAA Division III Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year honors. He then moved on to Stetson University for two years, where he went (.518), including (.625) in Trans-America Athletic Conference play. Hipsher earned TAAC Coach of the Year honors in after winning the conference regular season championship. Hipsher next began a nine-year stint as the head coach at the University of Akron in , turning around a struggling program after just two seasons by going (13-5 Mid-American Conference) in while earning MAC Coach of the Year honors. He led the Zips to records of 18-9 (12-6 MAC) and (11-7 MAC) over the following two seasons. Overall, Hipsher has a (.546) record as a head coach, including (.555) in conference contests. He has earned conference Coach of the Year honors three times and regional coach of the year twice. Hipsher has shown an ability to create both offense and defense. In , Wittenberg led the nation in field goal percentage defense, while in , Akron led the nation in three-point shooting percentage. Hipsher began his coaching career in as a graduate assistant at Miami University, where, while earning a master s in education, he helped the RedHawks to a 19-9 record (12-4 MAC), a MAC Championship, a MAC Tournament Championship and a victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Hipsher then spent two seasons at Miami Dade Community College as an assistant coach and health and physical education instructor before returning to the NCAA Division I ranks as an assistant coach at Dayton under legendary head coach Don Donoher from The Flyers made five postseason appearances during that time, advancing as far as the NCAA Tournament Elite 8 in In 35 seasons as a coach, Hipsher has an overall record of (.567), including (.541) in conference play. His teams have made 14 postseason appearances, including nine in the NCAA Tournament and five in the NIT. Hipsher graduated from Bowling Green State University in 1977 with a bachelor's degree in chemistry and biology. He was a two-time captain and academic All-American for the Falcons. The 59-year old Hipsher and his wife, Sue, are the parents of two sons, Andy (33) and Bryan (31). Andy currently serves as the associate head coach at UTPA.
