3 Last Game UTRGV Falls at CSU Bakersfield Jan. 12, 2017 at Icardo Center The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball team had its program record sevengame winning streak snapped with a loss to CSU Bakersfield. Senior Shawnte Goff led UTRGV (12-7, 2-1 WAC) with 13 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Erika Williams led CSU Bakersfield (6-10, 1-1 WAC) with 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including 4-of-6 from behind the arc, and 10 rebounds. Alexxus Gilbert scored 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including 4-of-5 from behind the arc. Tylinn Carter finished with 10 points and six rebounds. CSU Bakersfield jumped out to leads of 9-2, 14-4 and 17-6 before a three by sophomore Bernesha Peters allowed UTRGV to close the first quarter on a 10-2 run to pull within three. UTRGV (12-6, 2-0 WAC) is now off to the best 18-game start in program history, remaining one game ahead of last year s record-setting pace that saw the team finish with a program record.576 (19-14) winning percentage. Sophomore Idil Türk led UTRGV with a career-high 20 points on a career-best 5-of-6 shooting from behin the arc. Senior Mary Savoy scored 16 points with five rebounds, four blocks and three steals. Junior Shawnte Goff scored 10 points with four rebounds and five assists. Ceidra Coleman led UMKC (5-10, 0-2 WAC) with nine points. The first quarter was tight, with UMKC leading in the final minute. Türk closed out the first and opened the second quarter with three-pointers and then hit two more during an 18-0 run to put UTRGV up with 3:41 remaining. After a Coleman layup, UTRGV scored the next 10 points, going up on a Savoy jumper early in the third quarter. In total, UTRGV outscored UMKC 21-2 in the second quarter. The two points were the fewest ever by a UTRGV opponent in a single quarter. UTRGV (11-6, 1-0 WAC) is now off to the best 17-game start in program history, remaining one game ahead of last year s record-setting pace that saw the team finish with a program record.576 (19-14) winning percentage. Junior Shawnte Goff led UTRGV with 23 points five rebounds, six assists and two steals. Junior Hildur Björg Kjartansdóttir posted her second double-double of the season with 11 points and a career-high tying 16 rebounds. Senior Mary Savoy scored 10 points with seven rebounds. Kaylee Allen led CSU (0-15, 0-1 WAC) with 20 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Goff hit a three and Savoy made a layup as UTRGV jumped out to a 5-0 lead. CSU hit eight of its next 11 shots to go on a 22-7 run and take a lead at the end of the first quarter. UTRGV opened the second quarter on an 11-2 run, capped by a three by sophomore Bernesha Peters, to pull within Allen then hit two baksets and a free throw around a Goff three to put CSU up at halftime. CSU still led by three early in the third quarter at 31-28, but Kjartansdóttir hit a jumper and scored all of her 11 points during a 35-5 run to put UTRGV up 63-36, pushing the game out of reach. UTRGV outscored CSU over the final three quarters. With sophomore Idil Türk already on the court, freshman Tuana Dinç checked in with 1:44 remaining, marking the first time in NCAA history that there have been two Turkish-born players on the court at the same time for the same team and just the second time two Turkish-born players have ever been on the court at the same time. UTRGV led after a layup by Preston in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, but GCU scored the next 10 points as part of a 12-1 run to pull within on a Courtney Hayes jumper. It was still a three-point game at with 5:02 left, but Goff nailed a three to spark a 6-0 run as UTRGV pushed the lead back out to nine. Jones hit a pair of layups to bring GCU within two, and then, after a Preston layup, Hedrington made a three to make it a one-point game at 65-64, but that s as close as GCU got. Shawnte Goff was the WAC Player of the Year and a member of the All-WAC First Team and All-Defensive Team based on her play during the WAC season as voted on by the WAC s head coaches. During WAC play, Goff averaged a WAC-leading 16.1 points per game while playing a conference-high 35.9 minutes per game.
