3 Last Game UTRGV Drops WNIT Opener March 17, 2016 at Ed and Rae Schollmaier Arena The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women s basketball team fell to the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs in the first round of the WNIT. The Vaqueros (19-14) finish the season with the highest singleseason winning percentage in program history (.576). Freshman Bernesha Peters led the Vaqueros with 15 points and six rebounds. Junior Shawnte Goff scored 14 points while hitting four three-pointers. Senior Rickell Preston scored 13 points with six rebounds, four assists and two steals. Junior Anushka Maldonado scored 12 points with four rebounds. Zahna Medley led the Horned Frogs (17-14) 21 points while hitting five three-pointers. AJ Alix scored 20 points with nine assists. Torre Thompson scored 15 points. Veja Hamilton scored 15 points. Jordan Moore scored 14 points. The Vaqueros led 8-6 seven minutes into the game on the power of a pair of three-pointers by Goff and a layup by sophomore Hildur Björg Kjartansdóttir. Torre Thompson and Alix responded with three-pointers to give the Horned Frogs the lead and kick off a 15-2 run to end the first quarter and go up Thompson opened the second quarter with a layup to push the lead to 13, but Peters and Goff used threepointers to bring the Vaqueros within The Horned Frogs, however, scored the next nine points to build a lead on a Medley three. Junior Shawnte Goff and sophomore Hildur Björg Kjartansdóttir earned All-Tournament Team honors. Goff averaged 17.3 points, 3.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.0 steals per game while Kjartansdóttir averaged 10.7 points and 13.7 rebounds per game. In this game, junior Anushka Maldonado led the Vaqueros (19-13) with 14 points and five rebounds. Kjartansdóttir scored 10 points with nine rebounds. Brooke Salas led the Aggies (26-4) with 20 points, five rebounds and two blocks. Sasha Weber scored 16 points with five rebounds and three assists. Shanice Davis scored 11 points with seven assists and three steals. The Vaqueros led 5-2 in the opening minutes on a jumper by senior Rickell Preston and a Kjartansdóttir three, but Salas made a layup and a three to fuel a 14-0 run to give the Aggies the lead. The Aggies pushed their lead to 24 at on a Weber jumper with 5:23 remaining in the third quarter, but Preston and Maldonado made layups to spark a 14-2 run that saw the Vaqueros pull within on a Goff layup less than four minutes later. No. 2 UTRGV Maldonado-14 Kjartansdóttir-9 Goff (21-65).292 (7-24).667 (4-6) No. 1 NM State Salas-20 Mack-9 Davis (30-62).379 (11-29).818 (9-11) UTRGV Clinches Postseason Berth with WAC Tournament Semifinals Victory Over CSU Bakersfield March 11, 2016 at Orleans Arena The second-seeded University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women s basketball team guaranteed itself a spot in either the NCAA Tournament or the WNIT by defeating third-seeded CSU Bakersfield in double overtime in the WAC Tournament Semifinals. The Vaqueros are now 19-12, marking the second-straight year they have won a program record 19 games. The Vaqueros trailed with a minute and a half remaining in the second overtime when freshman Idil Türk buried a three to give the Vaqueros the lead. Tylinn Carter made a layup 28 seconds later, but senior Rickell Preston won the game by making a layup with 5.9 seconds on the clock. Junior Shawnte Goff led the Vaqueros with 24 points and three steals. Sophomore Hildur Björg Kjartansdóttir posted her eighth double-double of the season, third in a row and seventh in the last 10 games with 10 points and a career-high tying 16 rebounds (seven offensive). Preston finished with eight points, 10 rebounds and three steals. Batabe Zempare led the Roadrunners (12-19) with 25 points and 16 rebounds. Addi Walters scored 15 points while hitting four three-pointers. Carter scored 12 points with four blocks. Walters scored five quick points as the Roadrunners jumped out to a 7-2 lead, but with the score 9-4, junior Anushka Maldonado made a layup, Goff nailed a three, and Kjartansdóttir converted a three-point play as the Vaqueros scored eight-straight points to spark an 18-2 run and go up on a Goff three-point play with 3:19 remaining in the first quarter. Batabe Zempare scored five points to fuel a 9-0 run that brought the Roadrunners within two, but a Goff jumper and a Kjartansdóttir three pushed the lead out to at the quarter break. Walter and Carter opened the second quarter with three-pointers to make it a one-point game. The Roadrunners regained the lead on the first possession of the third when a Dajy Vines three made it 36-34, but Maldonado responded with a three to put the Vaqueros back on top. The Roadrunners took the lead back on an Erika Williams layup that made it 40-39, but a layup by Preston sparked a 7-0 run to give the Vaqueros a lead midway through the third. The Roadrunners responded by closing the quarter on an 11-3 run, capped by a Walter three at the buzzer, to go up Preston answered by converting a three-point play the start of the fourth quarter to give the Vaqueros the lead and start a 10-0 run to make it on a Maldonado jumper with 7:07 remaining. The Roadrunners came back to tie the game at 63 when Zempare hit two free throws with 33.9 seconds remaining. Zempare hit a layup on the first possession of overtime to give the Roadrunners a lead. Sophomore Weslaco alum Laura Van Tilburg tied the game with a layup three minutes later, but Carter hit a jumper seconds later to put the Roadrunners back on top. Türk tied the game with a pair of free throws with 20.4 seconds left. UTPA at Nebraska November 28, 2015 at Bob Devaney Sports Center The University of Texas-Pan American Broncs women s basketball team fell to the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers The Broncs (2-7) took a 2-0 lead on a Donna Jackson lay-up and were within 5-4 on a jumper by Adanna Opara after 2:25, but the Cornhuskers (7-1) went on a 20-4 run to go up 25-8 on a lay-up by Adrianna Maurer with 7:12 remaining in the first half. The Broncs put together back-to-back baskets for the first time when Jackson and Opara made jumpers to bring the Broncs within 25-12, but the Broncs were outscored 12-2 over the rest of the half as the Cornhuskers took a halftime lead. Jackson led the Broncs with seven points, four rebounds, five steals and one block. Opara finished with five points, five rebounds, one steal and two blocks. The Cornhuskers scored the first seven points of the second half to go up by 30 on a Lindsey Moore three-pointer. The Cornhuskers took a 40-point lead on a three-pointer by Brandi Jeffery with 5:24 to go that made it åjordan Hooper led all scorers with 16 points, all of which came in the first half. Shawnte Goff was the WAC Player of the Year and a member of the All-WAC First Team and All-Defensive Team based on her play during the WAC season as voted on by the WAC s head coaches. During WAC play, Goff averaged a WAC-leading 16.1 points per game while playing a conference-high 35.9 minutes per game. She also ranked fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.5), free throw shooting (.794) and defensive rebounding (5.4), seventh in assists (3.3) and three-pointers made per game (1.9), 13 th in steals (1.4) and blocks per game (0.6), and 18 th in overall rebounding (5.6). Tidwell led the Cardinals to a 26-8 record (13-3 Southland), the secondhighest win total in program history, and the 2010 NCAA Tournament after winning the Southland Conference Co-Championship and the Southland Conference Tournament Championship, en route to earning Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Coach of the Year honors. That s an average record of 21-11, including 11-5 in conference play. He has shown off his recruiting prowess time and again, as two of his recuriting classes have been ranked in the top 10. He's also had six in the top 20 and 12 in the top 50. In total, Tidwell has had 21 recruiting classes in the top 100 in the nation. He is credited with helping sign, develop and coach 38 student-athletes who have gone on to play professionally, including WNBA players Sandora Irvin (Phoenix/San Antonio/Chicago), Natasha Lacy (Detroit/Tulsa/Los Angeles), Adrianne Ross (San Antonio) and Danielle Crockrum (San Antonio/Utah), and 2008 Olympian Tamara Abalde. Additionally, in nine years as an NCAA Division I head coach, Tidwell is 58-for-58 in graduating student-athletes and assistants who have completed their eligibility with Tidwell. In 40 years of coaching, Tidwell has had over 100 former players and student assistants enter the teaching and coaching professions. Prior to joining Lamar, Tidwell spent eight years as the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. The Horned Frogs made the NCAA Tournament in each of his final seven seasons, including five trips to the second round. They also won the 2001 Western Athletic Conference Tournament Championship and the 2003 and 2005 Conference USA Tournament Championships. In , the Horned Frogs went 24-7 (12-2 CUSA) and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, going two rounds deep. For his part in the success of the season, Tidwell earned AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the Year honors. The Horned Frogs won 20 or more games six times and 19 or more games seven times while Tidwell was the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator, amassing an overall record of (.676), including (.703) in conference play. That s an average record of 22-10, including 10-4 in conference play. Tidwell began his coaching career at the high school level in Texas, leading Frisco High School from and Schulenburg High School from After spending six years as an assistant coach at Baylor, Tidwell returned to high school for one year, as the head coach and athletic director at Mexia High School. In 12 seasons at Texas high schools, Tidwell made 10 playoff appearances, earneded nine district coach of the year awards, and posted an overall record of (.816). Tidwell also served on the board of directors of the Texas Girls Coaches Association (TGCA) and the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC). He coached in the 1991 TGCA All-Star game and was selected to do so again in 1999, but had to withdraw after returning to collegiate coaching at TCU. Tidwell was the recipient of the TGCA's prestigious Margaret McKown Distinguished Service Award for his then 32 years of service to the organization in He also has worked as assistant director of the TABC summer camps for girls and was named "Teacher of the Year" on two occasions. He was honored as Schulenburg's "Citizen of the Year" in Tidwell continues to be active in both TGCA and TABC, serving as a college consultant for both organizations and helping them to attract college coaches as speakers for their nationally recognized coaching clinics. Tidwell has spoken at each organization's clinics four times. While at Baylor, Tidwell helped to lay the seeds of a turnaround for the program by bringing in two top 25 recruiting classes as the Bears broke the.500 mark in for the first time since , going The Bears then went in Tidwell is a well-known figure in women's basketball throughout the entire country and abroad. His international roots run deep as he has visited 38 different countries and has coached and signed players from Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Latvia, Trinidad, Sweden, Slovakia, Belgium, France, Iceland, Jamaica, Serbia, Peru, Nigeria, Poland, Denmark, Ukraine, Mexico, Romania, Slovakia, Turkey, Greece, Canada, Brazil and Lebanon. Tidwell enjoys sharing his basketball knowledge and has done numerous coaching clinics throughout Texas, with clinics overseas in Iceland, Scotland, Trinidad and Tobago, Nigeria, Latvia, Lithuania, the Bahamas, Kenya, Peru and Australia. In 2011, Tidwell served as the head coach of the national women's basketball team of the Bahamas, guiding them to a fifth-place finish at the Caribbean Basketball Championships. In 2014, Tidwell was honored by Austin College with the Joe Spencer Award for Career Achievement in coaching and teaching. This is the highest award that Austin College bestows upon its alumni. Tidwell has been honored three times by the Austin College Athletic Department and is the only person in the 165-year history of the institution to earn that much recognition. During the academic year, Tidwell played football and basketball at TCU before transferring to Austin College, where he earned three letters in football, three in baseball and two in track & field. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in 1975 and 1976, respectively. In July 2004, he was inducted into the Austin College Hall of Fame, and the year before that, he earned a place in the Sanger High School Hall of Fame. In July 2010, Tidwell was honored with the distinguished Kedric Couch - Austin College Alumni - Coach of the Year Award. Married to the former Teresa Ann Davis of Sanger, a retired specialneeds teacher in the Crowley Independent School District, the couple has three sons, Marc, Marty and Michael. They have two daughter inlaws, Kristin and Michele, two granddaughters, Ryan and Skylar, and three grandsons, Matthew, William, and Waylon. Michael, the Girls Athletic Coordinator and Head Cross Country Coach at Denton High School, and Marty, who coaches at Frisco Wakeland High School, have followed their dad into the coaching profession and have proven to be outstanding teachers and coaches, Marc is a very successful businessman in Houston with Bates Footwear. Tidwell also has eight "adopted sons," Jeremy Pevehouse (a highly regarded businessman with Dickie's apparel), Darryl Vrazel (assistant principal at Collins Middle School School), Dave Mishler (assistant girls basketball coach and teacher at Paschal High School), Sean McShane (former college basketball coach and now a successful businessman), Dr. Chad Hammett (practices at Beaumont Internal Medicine), Thomas Bilde (former basketball club coach and now an internationally known sports broadcaster in Denmark), Blake Ivy (successful businessman with Republic National Distributing Company) and Yannick Denson (basketball coach at Legacy Christian Academy).
