3 Last Game Vaqueros Complete Season Sweep of Incarnate Word December 17, 2015 at UTRGV Fieldhouse The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros women s basketball team completed the season sweep of the University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals with a victory. Junior Shawnte Goff led the Vaqueros (6-6) with 16 points and six assists. Freshman Bernesha Peters hit a career-high five three-pointers for a career-high tying 15 points. Senior Rickell Preston scored 12 points with 12 rebounds (seven offensive) and a season-high five steals for her second double-double of the season. In her first-career start, junior Anushka Maldonado scored seven points with five rebounds, four assists, three blocks and three steals. The Vaqueros scored 18 points off of 20 Cardinals (3-7) turnovers. The Cardinals scored seven points off of nine Vaqueros turnovers. Brianna Williams led the Cardinals with 15 points. Peters hit a pair of threes as the Vaqueros jumped out to a 10-4 lead. Then, after a Celia Garcia Paunero three made it a one-possession game, Preston bookended an 11-0 run with jumpers to give the Vaqueros a 21-7 lead. Williams responded with back-to-back threes to bring the Cardinals within eight, but a layup by Goff and a three by Maldonado allowed the Vaqueros to push their lead back out to 13. Williams followed with a layup to spark a 9-2 run as the Cardinals pulled within 28-22, but Preston and Goff hit layups to push the lead back into double-figures. Junior Anushka Maldonado led the Vaqueros (5-6) with a career-high 14 points after knocking down a career-high four three-pointers. Junior Shawnte Goff scored nine points with four assists. The Wildcats (7-1) got a game-high 15 points from Breanna Lewis while also adding nine rebounds. Kaylee Page recorded a double-double with13 points and 12 rebounds and Megan Deines chipped in 12 points and four rebounds. The Vaqueros jumped out to an early lead after getting back-to-back three point shots from freshman Bernesha Peters and Goff that made it 8-3. After a jumper from junior Mary Savoy, the Wildcats answered with a 15-2 run to close out the quarter as they led In the second quarter, the Vaqueros and Wildcats each knocked down a pair of buckets but it was Maldonado who hit back-to-back three pointers to get the Vaqueros within two at with 1:16 left in the half. Junior Anushka Maldonado scored 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-5 from behind the arc, with seven rebounds. Brittney Martin led the Cowgirls (7-0) with 26 points on 11-of-19 shooting and 12 rebounds. The Vaqueros led twice in the opening minutes, going up 3-2 on a Goff three and 5-3 on a put back layup by freshman Bernesha Peters. The Cowgirls scored 13 of the next 14 points to build a 10-point lead on a Martin jumper, but a three by freshman Nichele Hyman brought the Vaqueros back within seven. 4 Results Against Opponent UTRGV vs. Houston... Series Notes: This is their first meeting in 11 years. Last Meeting (12/3/05) 1 2 OT 2OT Final.. UTRGV at Houston December 3, 2005 at Bramlage Arena UTPA fell to Houston in the consolation game of the Commerce Bank Wildcat Classic hosted by Kansas State. For the second straight game, the Broncs were torched by an opposing player hitting six three-pointers. Jasmin Moore scored a game-high 24 points after connecting of 9-24 shooting, including 6-18 from behind the three-point arc. Teshay Winfrey led UTPA in scoring, posting a career-high in points and rebounds, with 15 and nine respectively. The Broncs and Cougars fought for the lead throughout the first half, with eight different lead changes until Houston's Ryan Meyers hit a three-pointer to close out the first half with the Cougars leading Houston pulled away in the second half, leading by as many as 18 points. The Broncs, however, battled and closed the lead to single digits with 2:18 left to play, but Houston managed to hold off the late charge. The Broncs dominated the boards, out-rebounding Houston 54-34, but hurt themselves by turning the ball over 23 times, compared to just eight turnovers committed by the Cougars. UTPA turnovers led to 17 points scored off turnover for UH. The two teams were evenly matched shooting the ball, with UH holding a slim advantage in field goal percentage, 33%-31%. MaHogany Daniel pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds for UTPA, matching her career-high. Daniel also contributed nine points in the losing effort. Robin Garrett added a career-high nine points. The Vaqueros scored 18 points off of 20 Cardinals turnovers while allowing just seven points on nine turnovers. Junior Shawnte Goff scored a game-high 16 points with five rebounds and a game-high six assists. Freshman Bernesha Peters hit a career-high five three-pointers for a career-high tying 15 points. Senior Rickell Preston posted her second double-double of the season and third of her career with 12 points on 5-of-11 shooting, a career-high 12 rebounds (seven offensive), three assists and a season-high five steals. In her first start, junior Anushka Maldonado scored seven points with five rebounds, a career-high four assists, three blocks and a career-high three steals in 28 minutes of turnover-free basketball. 6 Kansas State (12/7) The Vaqueros fell to the Wildcats The Vaqueros became the second team in the nation to play its 11 th game this season, doing so one day after Maine. The Vaqueros are one of just four teams in the nation to have played at least 11 games and used the same starting lineup in every game, along with No. 16 DePaul, USC Upstate and Morehead State. Junior Anushka Maldonado set a new career-high in scoring for the third-straight game with 14 points while hitting a career-high four three-pointers. It was the first time she s lead the team in scoring. Junior Mary Savoy grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds. (RV) Oklahoma State (12/5) The Vaqueros fell to the Cowgirls Juniors Shawnte Goff (14 points) and Anushka Maldonado (13 points) combined for half of the Vaqueros offense. Incarnate Word (12/3) The Vaqueros used an 18-5 run over the final six minutes of the second quarter to pull away and beat the Cardinals Junior Shawnte Goff finished with a game-high tying 16 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Junior Mary Savoy posted her third double-double with 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting, 13 rebounds, four blocks and two steals. Senior Rickell Preston also reached double-figures, scoring 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting, plus 4-of-4 from the line, with five rebounds and two steals. Sophomore Laura Van Tilburg recorded a career-high tying three blocks with three points, three rebounds and one steal. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (12/2) The Vaqueros fell to the Islanders Junior Shawnte Goff scored her 1,000 th and 1,001 st career points on a layup with six seconds left. She finished with 11 points, two blocks and two steals. Senior Rickell Preston posted her first double-double of the season and second of her career with a game-high 12 points and a career-high tying 10 rebounds. Junior Mary Savoy scored 10 points with seven rebounds. TCU (11/28) Despite leading by as many as five in the final three minutes of the game, the Vaqueros fell to the Horned Frogs The Vaqueros out-rebounded the Horned Frogs for the first time in program history (10 games), 48-40, Junior Shawnte Goff scored a team-high 22 points with three assists, three steals and no turnovers. Junior Anushka Maldonado posted her first-career doubledouble with career-high in points (12), rebounds (12) and blocks (three). Junior Mary Savoy grabbed 11 rebounds (seven offensive) while scoring with points with one block and two steals. UC Santa Barbara (11/21) Junior Mary Savoy went coast-to-coast for a layup with one second left to send the Vaqueros past the Gauchos Savoy finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. The Vaqueros outscored the Gauchos 18-6 in the third quarter. Junior Shawnte Goff scored a team-high 15 points with four rebounds, three assists and a season-high tying three steals. Sophomore Hildur Björg Kjartansdóttir scored 13 points while going a career-best 6-for-6 from the line with a season-high tying eight rebounds. The Vaqueros are off to a 4-2 start for the second year in a row. Eastern Michigan (11/21) The Vaqueros fell to the Eagles The game featured the first-ever matchup of Turkish-born players in an NCAA women s basketball game, including freshman Idil Türk (Istanbul) and EMU senior Sera Ozelci (Ankara). It was the second-ever matchup of players of Turkish decent, as Americanborn Yasemin Kimyacioglu (Santa Clara) faced her sister, Sebnem (Stanford), in the first round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament. Turk finished with nine points. The Vaqueros went 9-of-23 (.391) from behind the arc, marking the fourth time in five games that they ve hit at least eight threepointers. In 34 games last season, the Vaqueros hit at least eight three-pointers seven times. The Vaqueros have hit 43 threepointers through five games after hitting 33 in their first five games last season. Sophomore Hildur Björg Kjartansdóttir led the Vaqueros with 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting, including a career-high tying 3-of-4 from behind the arc, with six rebounds. Junior Mary Savoy scored nine points with 11 rebounds, three blocks and three steals. Freshman Bernesha Peters scored nine points on a trio of threepointers. It was head coach Larry Tidwell s 36 th win with the program, tying John McDowell ( ) for the third-most wins in program history. Despite missing their first seven attempts from behind the arc, the Vaqueros finished 11-for-33, tied for the sixth-highest single-game total in program history. Junior Shawnte Goff led the Vaqueros in scoring with 17 points while tying her career high in assists for the second-straight game with seven. She also had three steals and four rebounds. Junior Mary Savoy posted her second double-double with 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting and 12 rebounds, five steals, four assists and one block. Concordia (11/16) Four players reached double-figures in scoring as the Vaqueros won their home opener over the Tornados. The Vaqueros shot.531 (34-for-64) from the field, their highest field goal percentage since Nov. 17, 2012, when they shot.567 (38-for-67) against Texas A&M-Kingsville. Junior Mary Savoy had her second-straight 20+ point effort with a game-high 22 points on 10-of-15 shooting in addition to nine rebounds and five steals. Junior Shawnte Goff scored 19 points while going 5-for-8 from behind the arc with a career-high tying seven assists and three steals. Freshman Bernesha Peters went 3-for-4 from behind the arc en route to 15 points, three rebounds and four assists. Junior Mary Savoy had one of the greatest individual efforts in program history with 20 points, 22 rebounds (seven offensive), three blocks and four steals while going 8-for-15 from the field. The 22 rebounds are the second-highest single-game total in program history. Junior Shawnte Goff scored 17 points with three assists en route to Islanders Classic All-Tournament Team honors. East Carolina (11/13) The Vaqueros dropped their season opener to the Pirates Junior Shawnte Goff scored a team-high 22 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including 4-of-8 from behind the arc, plus 4-of-4 from the line with five rebounds, three assists and two steals. She was responsible for half of the Vaqueros threes and half of their assists. Goff s first three was the 100 th of her career. Senior Rickell Preston hit her first-career three-pointer. In , Tidwell led the Cardinals to a record (12-6 Southland) and a spot in the WBI (Women s Basketball Invitational) Quarterfinals. Tidwell has proven his ability both on and off the court, earning a chance to be Lamar s director of athletics in Tidwell had a successful year as an administrator, with an emphasis on the student-athlete, on the fields and courts and in the classroom, while also leading the women s basketball team to a 25-8 record (13-3 Southland) and a spot in the WNIT. His international roots run deep as he has visited nearly 40 different countries and has coached and signed players from Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Latvia, Trinidad, Sweden, Slovakia, Belgium, France, Iceland, Jamaica, Serbia, Peru, Nigeria, Poland and Denmark. Tidwell enjoys sharing his basketball knowledge and has done numerous coaching clinics throughout Texas, with clinics overseas in Iceland, Scotland, Trinidad and Tobago, Nigeria, Latvia, Lithuania, and the Bahamas. In 2011, Tidwell served as the head coach of the national women's basketball team of the Bahamas, guiding them to a fifth-place finish at the Caribbean Basketball Championships. During the academic year, Tidwell played football and basketball at TCU before transferring to Austin College, where he earned three letters in football, three in baseball and two in track & field. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in 1975 and 1976, respectively. Married to the former Teresa Ann Davis of Sanger, a retired special-needs teacher in the Crowley Independent School District, the couple has three sons, Marc, Marty and Michael. They have two daughter in-laws, Kristin and Michele, two granddaughters, Ryan and Skylar, and three grandsons, Matthew, William, and Waylon. Michael (at Lake Worth High School) and Marty (at Frisco Wakeland High School) have followed their dad into the coaching profession and have proven to be outstanding teachers and coaches, while Marc is a very successful businessman in Houston with Bates Footwear.
