Whitney Complex (7,000) - The Alcorn State University women s basketball program is in search of its seventh Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament Title and fourth appearance in the NCAA Tournament. - The Lady Braves have claimed the SWAC regular season title 11 times, the last coming in the season when the team posted a 21-9 record overall and a 14-4 mark in conference play. That squad defeated Southern in the SWAC Championship to earn an NCAA Tournament opening-round game against Michigan State. The Lady Braves fell to the Spartans in that last post-season appearance. - Alcorn Head Coach Courtney G. Pruitt enters her third year at the helm of the Lady Braves program. She currently owns a overall record with a mark in SWAC play. - Joining Coach Pruitt on the bench are Assistant Coaches Ta Neil Lewis and Edwond Eddings. Lewis is also entering her third season at Alcorn and played at Wiley College ( 14). She began her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Wiley and was the head coach at Jasper High School in Jasper, Texas. Eddings played at Arkansas Tech ( 07) and came to Alcorn from Chipola College, assisiting the squad to a top- 10 ranking in the final NJCAA Poll. Other assistant coaching stints include stops at Northeast Mississippi CC and Colorado Northwestern CC. He is entering his second season with the Lady Braves. - The Lady Braves are coming off a season that saw the team reach the SWAC Championship quarterfinals. Alcorn nearly overcame a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit, but could not catch the Lady Jaguars as the squad was downed at the F.G. Clark Activity Center in the first round of the tournament. 2 Alcorn Notes Continued - Alcorn finished the campaign with a 9-21 overall record and a 9-9 mark in league play, good for a fifth-place finish in conference standings. The team improved two spots in the league standings, having finished seventh the year before. - Alcorn finished last year ranked second in the SWAC in offensive rebounding (15.1 orpg) and turnover margin (+1.80). The team was third in three-point field goals per game (4.4), steals (9.8 spg), and blocked shots (3.6 bpg). The Lady Braves were fourth in assist/turnover ratio (0.6) and fifth in offensive rebounding percentage (.345). - In SWAC individual rankings last season, Henrietta Wells led the league in blocks (2.9 bpg). Ranking second were Alcorn State University Alexus Freeman in steals (2.4 spg), Brianna Luton in three-point field goal percentage (.365), and Tia Sanders in three-point field goals made (1.9 pg). Ranking third were Freeman in assists (3.3 apg), Luton in three-point field goals made (1.7 pg), and Miracle Rushing in offensive rebounding (3.1 orpg). - The Lady Braves earned an season-opening win in overtime at Southeastern Louisiana on Nov. 10. Tia Sanders was named the SWAC Player of the Week on Nov. 14 as she scored a career-high 29 points. Miracle Rushing recorded her second career double-double performance with 12 points and 14 rebounds. - The Nov. 10 win over the Lady Lions marked the first against a nonconference NCAA Division I opponent since a win at home over Louisiana-Monroe on Dec. 8, It was also the first season-opening victory against a DI opponent since Nov. 22, 2002 when the Lady Braves defeated Texas State in a neutral-site contest in Waco, Texas. Five Lady Braves scored in double digits, led by Tia Sanders 18 points. Both are season highs by an opponent. - Sanders and Freeman, Alcorn s two leading scorers, combined for just 17 points against the Sugar Bears. Austin last Saturday, their season high. - Against Southern Miss last Friday, four Lady Braves were perfect at the line. Sanders, Kristian Dewitt, and Cloe Lane were all 2-2, while Freeman made her lone charity shot. - With the overtime loss to Stephen F. 3 The Tougaloo Lady Bulldogs - Tougaloo enters Thursday s matchup 2-4 overall and is on a twogame win streak. The Lady Bulldogs picked up their first win of the season Nov. 21 as they took a close battle with Rust College The team then added another win Tuesday as they defeated Selma University In the Battle of the Lady Bulldogs, Montoria Atkinson recorded a 13-point, 17-rebound double-double and teammate Debraia Bell posted an 11-point, 19-rebound double-double to lead Tougaloo. Also scoring in double digits were Melissa Creese with 14 points and Chesha Lewis with Atkinson is averaging a double-double with 12.7 points and 13.0 rebounds per outing. Following her in scoring are Creese with 8.8 points and Lewis with 8.2 points. Jermani Thompson is the team s threat from long-range with four deep balls this season. Defensively, Atkinson owns seven blocks with six steals and Creese leads the team with 14 steals. - Atkinson leads the NAIA Division I in defensive rebounds per game (8.8) and ranks third in rebounds per game (13.0), eighth in offensive rebounds per game (4.2), and ninth in total rebounds (78). - Tougaloo is averaging 56.5 points per game while allowing opponents to net 63.7 (-7.2). 4 In Alcorn s Last Outing... Lady Braves Wrap Up Southern Mis Classic with Overtime Loss to SFA HATTIESBURG, Miss. The Alcorn State University women s basketball program was seconds away from a victory, but Stephen F. Austin tied the game with a late three and outscored the Lady Braves 13-9 in overtime to steal the victory Saturday at Reed Green Coliseum. Both teams posted 22 points in the third quarter and SFA took a narrow advantage into the final 10 minutes. Senior guard Alexus Freeman gave the Lady Braves the lead as she started off the final period with a three ball, but the Ladyjacks (4-1) responded with a 7-0 run. Alcorn chipped away at the lead and tied the game at on a Tia Sanders jumper (2:47 remaining). After SFA made a freebie and Freeman scored a basket, the teams traded three-pointers. Freeman went to the line with seven seconds left on the clock and converted both of her shots to make it a Alcorn lead. The Ladyjacks refused to go down, though, and Stevi Parker drained a three ball from the left corner to force overtime. In extra time, the score was knotted at when a 6-1 swing by the Ladyjacks created some separation. Sanders connected from beyond the arc to pull the Lady Braves to within two with nine seconds left, but Parker got to the charity stripe and made both of her shots for the final score. Size-wise we matched up well, said head coach Courtney G. Pruitt. We just couldn t hit our free throws. We faced a ton of adversity with foul trouble and the officials favorable 45 free throws for our opponents. Nonetheless, we persevered and kept fighting. We just fell short in the extra quarter. Alcorn was led by Sanders and Freeman with 25 and 24 points, respectively. Freeman went 7-22 (31.8 percent) from the field, 2-7 (28.6 percent) from long-range, and 8-14 (57.1 percent) at the free-throw line. She finished with five boards, a season-high eight assists, and five steals. Also in double figures were junior guard Cloe Lane with 14 points and sophomore guard Jada Hargrove with 12 points. Lane grabbed six rebounds with an assist and a steal. Hargrove pulled down four boards with a pair of assists and a career-high four steals. Freshman forward Jamaysha Bernard and Sanders opened the scoring with back-toback buckets. After Taylor Jackson drained a deep ball and Kennedy Harris shot 1-2 at the line to cut the lead to 7-6, Alcorn scored six unanswered, highlighted by a Sanders three-pointer. After the teams traded points, the Lady Braves used a 5-0 run to go up at the end of the first. The Ladyjacks came out quick in the second quarter, netting eight straight points to take control of the game. Alcorn finally answered with a Lane layup that knotted the score at with 4:50 to play in the opening half. After another 8-0 run by SFA, the Lady Braves responded with six straight in the final minute to head into the locker room trailing Alcorn shot (42.9 percent) from the field, 8-19 (42.1 percent) from deep, and (42.3 percent) at the free-throw line. 5 Courtney Garrett Pruitt enters her third season as the third leader in school history to lead the Alcorn State women s basketball program. In her first season at the helm, Pruitt led the Lady Braves to the second round of the SWAC tournament for the first time since the season and put her team in a prime position to beat the second-seeded Southern Lady Jaguars. The Lady Jags used a 21-8 fourthquarter run to ultimately edge Alcorn Under Pruitt s tutelage, Norianna Haynes was named the SWAC Player of the Year. Haynes finished the regular season leading the SWAC in scoring with 568 points 20.3 per game. She also topped the conference in double-doubles (12), as well as defensive rebounds (6.6 per game). COURTNEY G. PRUITT Head Coach Overall, SWAC (Third Season) Female Athlete of the Year after becoming the all-time shot blocker in school history. From she was the head coach at Wiley College where she led the Lady Wildcats to 3 NAIA National Tournament Appearances, 1 Final Four Appearance, 2 Red River Athletic Conference Titles, and 1 Tournament title. She also coached 3 All-Americans, received 2 back to back coach of the year awards in & season. In her last three seasons Coach Pruitt has been ranked in the NAIA Top 25 National poll with her highest ranking being held at # 6 in the Nation. In 2014 she was also the recipient of the NAACP Coach Clifford E. Stewart sportsmanship award, for her leadership in sports and education. In her coaching career she has won over 100 games and is one of the youngest and fastest coaches to reach 100 career wins. Not only has Coach Pruitt led her team on the court but also off as she holds a 90% graduation rate for her student-athletes. Following Haynes stellar season, she signed to play professionally with Portugal s Clube Desportivo Torres Novas. In Pruitt s second season, she coached a pair of studentathletes to postseason individual awards. Henrietta Wells was named the SWAC Defensive Player of the Year after leading the league in blocks, while Alexus Freeman earned Newcomer of the Year. Wells was also selected as the SGA In during her years at Ranger College, she produced three conference players with an outstanding record marking the history books for the school accomplishments in women s basketball. In , Pruitt continued her coaching career as she was named the assistant coach at Tyler Junior College. She helped lead the team to a 23-8 record as they produced one All-American and three all-conference players. Pruitt began her coaching career at Lon Morris College in During her tenure, she assisted the team to the Region 14 conference semi-finals. After three years of coaching at Lon Morris, she continued her professional growth and became the head coach at Ranger College for two years. Coach Pruitt earned her Associate of Science Degree in Chemistry from Lon Morris College in She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sports Management from Newberry College in Coach Pruitt later earned her Masters of Education in Kinesiology/Health Science from Stephen F. Austin in She is married to her husband Brent of eight years and they have two beautiful children Kourjyn and Baylee. 5

26 Alcorn is the oldest public historically black land-grant institution in the United States and the second-oldest state-supported institution of higher learning in Mississippi. Alcorn University was founded in 1871 as a result of the people of Mississippi s efforts to educate the descendants of formerly enslaved Africans. It was named in honor of the sitting governor of Mississippi, James L. Alcorn. Alcorn State University ABOUT ALCORN STATE UNIVERSITY Alcorn is situated in Claiborne County, seven miles west of Lorman, 80 miles south of the capital city of Jackson, 45 miles south of Vicksburg, and 40 miles north of Natchez. The site was originally occupied by Oakland College, a school established by Presbyterians in 1828; the state of Mississippi purchased the Oakland campus for $40,000 and named it Alcorn University. Hiram R. Revels resigned his seat as a United States senator to become the University s first president. The state legislature provided $50,000 cash annually for the University s first 10 years to support its establishment and overall operation. Additionally, 30 acres of land were sold for $188,928; Alcorn received three-fifths of the proceeds, or $113,400. This funding was used for Alcorn s agricultural and mechanical components. physical plant and academic programs evolved into a more diversified University. The student population is now representative of more than 65 counties, more than 30 states, and at least 18 foreign countries. The University provides an undergraduate education that enables students to successfully pursue work in graduate and professional schools, engage in teaching, and enter other professions. Initially, the institution s three major study components were the four-year college track, the two-year college track, and the threeyear graded track. Students spent the morning, from seven o clock until noon, in classes. In the afternoon, they worked in various University shops for eight cents per hour. Room and board, including laundry, cost about $5 a month. In 1878, Alcorn University became Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College. The college was exclusively for males at first, but eventually women were admitted. A dormitory for women was built in Over time, facilities increased from three historic buildings to more than 80 structures. The original purchase of 225 acres of land grew to a campus of more than 1,700 acres. In 1974, Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College became Alcorn State University. Governor William L. Waller signed House Bill 298, granting this status. Alcorn has thrived by continuously accomplishing dynamic goals and objectives despite limited resource allocations from the state. By the early 1990s, Alcorn s As Mississippi recognized the importance of educating all citizens, Alcorn has gained status and importance. From the original eight faculty members in 1871, the University has grown to more than 800 faculty and staff. The student body has increased from 179 students to more than 4,000 students with varied ethnic backgrounds. Although early graduates of Alcorn had limited horizons, today s graduates are successful in their chosen professions, and many are outstanding entrepreneurs. Throughout Alcorn s history, the leadership and faculty remained committed to enhancing the institution s image and to attracting young people whose interest is the pursuit and receipt of a quality education. Over the decades, the college that excelled against great odds has become one of the leading universities in the nation. Alcorn State University operates divisions with degree programs in more than 50 areas, including the bachelor s, master s, and educational specialist degrees.
