2 The Program The 7-8 season marks the nd year of Arizona State University sponsoring women s basketball as an intercollegiate sport. also begins its st campaign as one of the charter members of the prestigious Pacific- Conference. Mary ittlewood coached s first squad in 975, and was inducted into the Hall of Distinction in 99. ittlewood began her association with the university in 965 and coached volleyball from After her one-year stint as s women s basketball coach, ittlewood began her -year reign as the Sun Devil softball coach. She retired in 989. After posting five non-winning campaigns during its first five seasons as a sponsored intercollegiate sport, the program began to turn the corner in Under head coach, the Sun Devils would post an 86-7 record (.75) over the next four seasons. During each of Turner Thorne s first four seasons the Sun Devils saw an improvement in their win total from the prior season. Before long, gradual improvement would give way to head-turning accomplishments. In -, Turner Thorne s fifth season, the Sun Devils finished tied for first in the Pac- and earned their first NCAA Tournament berth in nine seasons. One season later the Sun Devils won the inaugural Pac- Conference Tournament and won their first NCAA Tournament game in 9 years. In -5 the Sun Devils found themselves in the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in seasons. ast season the Sun Devils set single-season school records for most wins (), most Pac- wins (6) and most road wins () and came within one victory of earning a trip to the Final Four for the first time in school history. The winningest coach in program annals, Turner Thorne has led the Sun Devils to the NCAA Tournament five times in the last seven season, including a current school record three consecutive years. The Players The first student-athlete to make headlines on the Sun Devil hardwood was Joanie Smith, who played from 9-. Smith averaged.5 points and became the first female athlete to sign a professional contract when she was drafted to play for the Milwaukee Does in 9. hile Arizona State did not sponsor women s basketball as an intercollegiate sport until 975-, (then Tempe Normal School) has fielded women s basketball teams dating back to the 89s. One of the most celebrated players to help bring national attention to the Sun Devil program is two-time consensus All-American and four-time All-Conference pick (98-8), a former member of the NBA s New York iberty. In her final game as a Sun Devil, Hampton exploded for a school-record points against Arizona. In 98 Olivia Jones was named to the Kodak All-District women s basketball team and was an all-conference selection. In 98-8, she was s leading scorer with 9 points per game. 16 6 NCAA Tournament - Tucson, Ariz. For the seventh straight season, head coach Charli Turner Thorne led to a postseason appearance. The 5th ranked Sun Devils earned an at-large bid into the 6 NCAA Tournament. In the first round of the Albuquerque Regional, the fourth-seeded Sun Devils squared off against Stephen F. Austin at the McKale Center in Tucson, Ariz. proved to be too big and too deep as they defeated the adyjacks 8-6. Eleven players scored for the Sun Devils, all in the first half. Senior Kristen Kovesdy scored points on 8-for- shooting and collected rebounds. Backup center, freshman Kirsten Thompson, added points for the Devils and Amy Denson finished with nine points and rebounds. Junior Aubree Johnson was the only other Arizona State player in double figures with. The Sun Devils led by as many as 8 in the second half and finished with a 5-6 rebounding advantage over the adyjacks. The Sun Devils met the fifth-seeded Utah Utes in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Despite jumping out to an early lead, the Devils fell to the Utes The Devils lead in the first half -9, but the Utes erased the fifteen-point deficit, scoring the rest of the first-half points, to tie the game at -. The game remained close for much of the second half until Utah went on an 8-5 run to lead 7-57 with :8 left in the game. The Devils would not be able to overcome the deficit. 17 7 NCAA Tournament - os Angeles/Greensboro, N.C. The Arizona State women s basketball team, riding the success of the best season in school history, earned a third consecutive bid to the NCAA Tournament and a spot in the Elite Eight. The eighth-ranked Sun Devils received a No. seed in the Greensboro Region, their highest-ever placement in the NCAA Tournament. In the first round, was able to overcome a lackluster shooting effort with tough defense to defeat a pesky UC Riverside team. The Sun Devils secured the win by outscoring the Highlanders 9- with just under eight minutes to go in the second half. Junior guard Briann January scored 5 points and sophomore guard Danielle Orsillo added points and four assists to help rally to win In the second round the Sun Devils once again showed their tenacity in overcoming another slow start against ouisville. Down by with eight minutes remaining, the Sun Devils used a 5- run to clinch their second Sweet Sixteen appearance in three years with a -58 win. January again lead the Sun Devils in scoring, matching her career high with points. In their two first round games, the Sun Devils outscored the Highlanders and the Cardinals a combined -6 in the final eight minutes to turn near season-ending losses into season-saving wins. The third round provided little challenge for, as the Sun Devils, who were playing more than, miles away from home in Greensboro, N.C., defeated the upstart Bowling Green Falcons -9. ith the win, the Sun Devils punched their ticket for their first ever Elite Eight appearance. Orsillo, who replaced January as a starter due to a concussion she suffered in the final moments against ouisville, scored 6 points on 7- shooting to go along with three rebounds and two assists all while playing a career-high minutes. The Sun Devils, who shot 6 percent in the first half to take a 6-point halftime lead, also racked up 6 points off turnovers. Bowling Green made the first basket of the game but would not lead again. answered Bowling Green s points with a - run, capped off by consecutive -pointers from Orsillo. In the Elite Eight, took on a determined Rutgers team who used tough defense to muddle the Sun Devils offensive efforts.
