6 LAMONT SMITH Head Coach 3rd Year The University of San Diego introduced Lamont Smith as its head coach for men's basketball on April 1, 2015 in the Jenny Craig Pavilion Warren Hospitality Suite that included media, key campus members, supporters of Torero Basketball, and family members and friends. Smith, who replaced Bill Grier, became the Toreros' twelfth head coach in program history and just the fifth coach since USD moved to the NCAA Division I ranks in Smith, 41, enters his third year at the helm of the Torero basketball program. He welcomes back four starters from last year's squad that finished overall. The Toreros earned a home victory over BYU and swept Portland during league play. Brett Bailey, last year's lone senior and team captain, earned All-WCC Second Team honors. He came to USD from the University of New Mexico where he had been on staff the last two years as the Associate Head Coach under Craig Neal. Smith brought with him plenty of west coast and regional recruiting ties, plus a reputation for developing student-athletes and being one of the hot up-and-coming coaches in the collegiate ranks. Smith returned to USD where he was a member of the men's basketball team from He started all 27 games his senior year in for the 18-9 Toreros. He was named the Toreros' Defensive Player of the Year in 1997 and 1999 and served as the team captain from Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from the University of San Diego in In , Smith's first season with the New Mexico program, the Lobos became one of the nation's best defensive teams over the final half of the season, allowing just 66.1 points per game. For the third straight year, the Lobos held opponents under 40% shooting, limiting its competition to 38.9 percent from the field. UNM's scoring defense dropped almost 15 points over the course of the season with Smith handling the defensive calls. Smith spent with the University of Washington under Lorenzo Romar, where the Huskies went overall and 9-9 in league play, advancing to the NIT, where Washington lost at BYU. It marked the second time that Smith had coached with Romar, as he got his start in coaching as a graduate assistant at Saint Louis from when Romar was the coach of the Billikens. Smith, a native of The Colony, Texas, was a graduate assistant coach at Saint Louis. Smith's duties with the Billikens included coordinating the team's video editing and film exchange, while assisting with team recruiting, scouting and strength and conditioning programs. Washington was Smith's second Pac-12 stop after spending four seasons ( ) at Arizona State. While at Arizona State, the Sun Devils had a pair of 20-win seasons with Smith on the bench and advanced to the NCAA Second Round in Smith also played a vital role in developing 2009 Pac-10 Player of the Year James Harden. Prior to joining Herb Sendek's staff at Arizona State, Smith was at Santa Clara from as Kerry Keating's top assistant. He helped recruit one of the top classes in the West Coast Conference during his time with the Broncos. Smith spent as an assistant on the staff of Randy Bennett at Saint Mary's before joining Santa Clara. Bennett and Smith knew each other from their time on Romar's Saint Louis staff. Saint Mary's was 2-27 the year before Bennett and Smith arrived, and the Gaels won nine games the first year, 15 the second, 19 in the third and a then-school record 25 in The team made the NCAA Tournament for just the third time in the history of the program while the team set a school record by scoring 2,377 points. 7 MEET THE TOREROS... 0 Isaiah Pineiro F R-JR/RS Auburn, CA/Placer (Portland State) Isaiah Pineiro, a 6-7 wing from Auburn, California, sat out the campaign after transferring in from Portland State. In he played in all 31 games while totaling 19 starts. He finished with averages of 12.0 points per game and 5.5 rebounds while shooting 50.7 percent from the field ( ) and 76.3 percent from the free throw line (90-118). He notched three double-doubles against UT Rio Grande Valley (24 points/14 rebounds), Nevada (13 points, 11 rebounds) and Northern Arizona (31 points, 12 rebounds), and tallied 17 games in double-digit scoring. He played his freshman year at Sierra Junior College where he averaged 15.4 points and 7.4 rebounds. Pineiro attended Placer High School in Auburn, California. As a senior he averaged 20.4 points, 10.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 2.0 blocks per game while shooting.532 from the field and.743 at the line. He earned All-League and All-Section honors and was a two-time team MVP. Averaged 6.7 points per game and 4.6 rebounds while averaging 33.6 minutes of action per contest... Converted 36.8% from the field (63-171), 37.0% from beyond the three-point line (30-81) and 81.3% from the charity stripe (52-64)... Scored in double digits in ten contests with a career-high 20 points in team s road win over Pepperdine (1-7-17)... Hit the game-winner at Santa Clara ( ) in double-overtime for a victory... He was selected First Team All-Region and a McDonald s All-American nominee. Playing for Coach Mark Bishop, the Hawks finished overall in District 5-5A play this past season. 2 Joey Calcaterra G FR/HS Novato, CA/Marin Catholic Joey Calcaterra enters his first season with the Toreros. A 6-3 guard from Kentfield, CA, he played at Marin Catholic High School in the Bay Area. This past season he averaged 30.0 points per game (24th nationally) and was named the MVP of the Marin County Athletic League and for his team. He was also named the North Bay Player of the Year. During his junior season he led his team in scoring averaging 27.4 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals per game. He was named 1st Team All-League in the Marin County Athletic League (MCAL), 2nd Team All-Metro Bay Area, and 1st Team All-State California Juniors. Joey s brothers, Frankie and Nick, played basketball at Cal Lutheran University and San Francisco State University, respectively. 3 Olin Carter III G JR/2V Allen, TX/Allen Started in 30 games last season and ranked second on the team in scoring at 15.3 points per game... He converted 50.0% from the field and 39.0% from beyond the three-point arc. He was selected the District 6-6A Offensive Most Valuable Player and First Team All-Region. Playing for Coach Jeff McCullough, the Eagles finished overall and were a 2015 Regional Finalist. 4 Mitch Schafer G JR/1V Portland, OR/Jesuit Competed last season as a walk-on for the Toreros and appeared in seven games in a limited role. Attended Jesuit High School in Portland, Oregon where he played for Coach Gene Potter. Helped his team take fifth place in the Oregon 6A State Tournament in his junior and senior seasons. 5 Emanuel Hylton G FR/HS Washington, D.C./St. John s College Emanuel Hylton enters his first season with the Toreros basketball program. A 6-3 guard from Silver Springs, Maryland, he attended St. John s College High School. This past season he averaged 12.0 points and earned 3rd Team All-WCAC honors for his squad. During his junior campaign he was a member of the 2016 Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) championship team that finished with a 30-5 record. The WCAC is considered one of the best high school basketball conferences in the country. Emanuel was a vital contributor on a roster that graduated four Division I guards in 2016.

Was an All-State honorable mention selection and was named to the All-Conference first team his senior season ( )... Helped his team go win the state championship his sophomore year and to the sweet 16 in his junior and senior seasons... Also played golf and baseball. 11 Akim Jamal Jonah C FR/HS Berlin, Germany/Friedrich-Ebert-Gymnasium Akim-Jamal Jonah enters his first year with the USD men s basketball program. From Berlin, Germany, he attended Friedrich-Ebert-Gymnasium. 12 Juwan Gray F SO/1V Dover, DE/ Scotland Performance Inst. (PA) Appeared in all 31 games with 21 starts in Averaged 7.2 points per game and ranked second on the team in rebounding at 5.6 boards per game... Converted 43.3% from the field (78-180), 40.9% from three point range (27-66) and 62.1% from the free throw line (41-66)... Led the team with 25 steals... Scored in double digits ten times with a season-best 16 points twice (Bethune-Cookman and Bethesda)... Notched two double-doubles against Bethune Cookman (16 points, 17 rebounds) and in a road win at Pepperdine (11 points, 14 rebounds)... He totaled 5 steals against Gonzaga ( ). A 6-8 forward from Dover, Delaware, Juwan played for Scotland Performance Institute in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania in He attended Polytech HS and in was named 1st Team All-Henlopen North Conference and 2nd Team All-State Delaware. In his final high school season, Juwan averaged 15 points, 8 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game. His older brother, Kendall Gray, played at Delaware State and was named the MEAC Player of the Year. 13 José Martinez F SO/1V Cayey, Puerto Rico/Cheshire Academy (CT) José Martinez, a 6-foot-10 forward, appeared in 13 games for the Toreros last season... He chipped in with 2.6 points per game... He had his break-out collegiate game against Portland in the regular-season finale at the Jenny Craig Pavilion... Against Portland ( ) he scored 11 points and made 4-6 shots overall and 3-of-5 three-pointers... In the WCC Tournament first round against Portland, he added 5 points and 2 blocked shots. Martinez is a face up forward with a lot of skill. During the season Martinez averaged 14.5 points per game and shot 40% from the three point line for Cheshire Academy (CT). 14 Andrew Ferguson C FR/HS Perth, Australia/Australian Center of Excellence Andrew Ferguson, a 7-0 center from Perth, Australia, enters his first year with USD. Ferguson attended the prestigious Australian Center of Excellence, formerly the Australian Institute of Sport. The Center of Excellence is a feeder program to all of Australia s Olympic Sports. He was a member of the 2016 Australian Under 18 National Team, which participated in the Albert Schweitzer Tournament (mini basketball World Cup) held in Manheim, Germany. He also played on the 2016 Emerging Boomers Tour Team that traveled to China. This team was for future Olympic hopefuls. He also represented Western Australia at the Under 20 Australian National Championships. This past season he played his club basketball for the Lakeside Lightning in the Western Australian State Basketball League. An extremely smart basketball player, he possesses the ability to shoot the ball from outside and has solid passing skills for a big man. Besides USD, he was recruited by Loyola Marymount, Saint Mary s College, Portland, Ball State, Kansas State and New Mexico. 15 Alex Floresca F R-SO/1V St. Louis, MO/Webster Groves Sat out the season recovering from shoulder surgery. During his freshman campaign he appeared in 28 contests off the bench for the Toreros and averaged 11.1 minutes per game... Averaged 2.5 points per game and 1.8 rebounds... Converted 56.1% from the field (23-41) and 69.4% from the free throw line (25-36)... Scored a season-best 13 points (5-5 FG s) to go with 5 rebounds against Pepperdine ( )... Added 10 points at San Francisco ( )... Season-best 7 rebounds to go with 8 points at Pepperdine ( ). From St. Louis, Missouri, he attended Webster HS in Webster Groves, Missouri where he played for coach Jay Blossom... His senior year he averaged 11.1 points per game and 7.4 rebounds per game and converted 63.8% from the field (125x196) for the 23-6 Statesmen... He was named the Suburban 12 South Player of the Year this year along with making the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association All-State team... He was a three time first team all-conference selection during his tenure at Webster along with winning four consecutive conference championships... Webster went overall in his four years on the varsity... He was named the team Most Valuable Player for both his Junior and Senior seasons. During his junior campaign he also earned all-district honors after averaging 12.1 points and 7.5 rebounds while converting 72.0% from the field. His play helped propel Webster to a sectional appearance in the state playoffs. Webster finished 24-5, won the Conference Championship and the Class 5 District 4 Championship. In the District Championship final against Kirkwood, Floresca totaled 20 points and 8 rebounds in the victory.

He started all 31 games this past season and averaged11.0 points per game and 5.4 rebounds... Converted 42.4% from the field ( ), 32.9% from three-point range (49-149) and 72.6% from the free throw line (77-106)... Scored in double-digits fifteen times, reaching 20 or more points four times... Career-high 29 points against Cal State Fullerton ( ) where he made 9-14 shots overall and 6-9 threes... Also tallied 4 points in 8 minutes of action against the Santa Clara Broncos on January 9th. 22 Isaiah Wright G R-JR/SO Boise, ID/Borah (Utah) Isaiah Wright, a 6-2 guard from Boise, Idaho, sat out the season at USD after transferring in from the University of Utah. In he played in 29 games. The one-time Idaho Gatorade player of the year was a reserve in the backcourt for the Utes. As a freshman for the Sweet Sixteen bound Runnin Utes, Wright played in 33 games. He attended Borah High School in Boise, Idaho. He was named the 2014 Idaho Gatorade Player of the Year after averaging 16.2 points, 6.9 assists, 5.2 rebounds and 3.3 steals.
