The game will be played at the Jenny Craig Pavilion with a 7:05 p.m. tip-off scheduled. USD advance with an win over Hartford on March 12, while Portland State received a first round bye. SERIES RECORD: This is the 7th meeting between USD and PSU with the Toreros owning a 5-1 edge, including a 3-0 mark in San Diego. RADIO/STREAM: All USD games are broadcast on either The Mighty 1090AM or ESPN 1700AM with Jack Cronin (4th season) bringing you all the action; his pre-game show airs 15 minutes prior to tip-off. WCC RECORDS (as of Mar. 13): Gonzaga (30-4, 17-1 WCC), Saint Mary's (29-5,16-2), BYU (24-10, 11-7), San Diego (19-13, 9-9), San Francisco (18-15, 9-9), Pacific (14-18, 9-9), Santa Clara (11-20, 8-10), LMU (11-20, 5-13), Portland (10-22, 4-14), Pepperdine (6-26, 2-16). ACTING HEAD COACH SAM SCHOLL: USD Executive Director of Athletics Bill McGillis named Sam Scholl acting head coach for the Torero men's basketball program on February 27th for the remainder of this season. Scholl enters the PSU game with a record of 1-1. He played two seasons at USD ( ) and was the Toreros' lone senior on the team's 20-9 squad from the campaign. USD would post a two-year record during Scholl's playing career. Scholl would go on to spend seven seasons on the USD coaching staff under former head coach Brad Holland, including helping the team win the 2003 WCC Basketball Championship and reach the 2003 NCAA Division I Tournament for the third time in program history. For eight seasons Scholl was on the Santa Clara University staff, and in September of 2013 was promoted to Associate Coach under head coach Kerry Keating. At SCU Scholl helped the Broncos to 26 wins in and 24 victories in The Broncos won the College Basketball Invitational post-season tournament in 2013 and the CollegeInsider.com Tournament in A native of Gig Harbor, Wash., Scholl completed his undergraduate degree in Sociology at USD in Prior to arriving at USD he played two seasons at Tacoma Community College in Tacoma, Washington, and was the point guard on the A Washington State championship team for Gig Harbor High School. Sam and his wife, Heather, have three daughters - Riley, Reese and Regan. TORERO TRIO EARN ALL-WCC HONORS: The WCC announced the Men's Basketball All-Conference teams and three Toreros were recognized. Senior forward Isaiah Pineiro was named to the first team, junior guard Isaiah Wright was selected second team, and junior guard Olin Carter III was named honorable mention. At the conclusion of the regular season, Pineiro led the Toreros in scoring at 15.4 ppg game (#6 in WCC), as well as in rebounding at 6.2 rpg (#10 WCC). Wright led the team in assists at 5.3 apg (#3 WCC) and steals at 1.3 (#3 WCC), and ranked second on the team in points (13.3 ppg) and rebounding (5.0 rpg). Carter, who late in the season became just the 25th Torero to crack 1,000 career points, ranked third on the team in scoring at 12.2 ppg (#17 WCC). TORERO DEFEAT HARTFORD 88-72: The Toreros shot a season-best 58.2% from the field against Hartford in earning an impressive st round victory. Senior Cameron Neubauer led six Toreros in double-digit scoring with 16 points, and junior guard Isaiah Wright was named the Riley Wallace Classic MVP after notching a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. USD overcame a 17-point second half deficit to tie the score at 71-all. BYU was paced by Elijah Brown (27 points). * The Toreros closed out the regular-season finale with a come-from-behind win at USF (Feb. 24)... Juwan Gray scored a career-high 18 points and Olin Carter III chipped in 16 points... The Toreros trailed at the halftime break but converted 16-of-26 shots (61.5%) over the final 20 minutes... With the win the Toreros swept the season series against the USF Dons. * The USD Toreros battled nationally ranked Gonzaga to the end on Thursday (Feb. 22)... Olin Carter III scored a game-high 21 points and Isaiah Pineiro and Isaiah Wright each chipped in 14 points... The Toreros held a halftime lead and early in the second half led Carter connected on three-pointers twice in the final 30 seconds to pull USD to within three points... Gonzaga was paced by Killian Tillie (17 points) and Rui Hachimura (16 points, 8 rebounds). * The Toreros earned a solid home win over BYU (Feb. 17)... Coming off the bench for the first time this season, Isaiah Pineiro scored a game-high 20 points... He was followed by Cameron Neubauer (14), Olin Carter III (13) and Isaiah Wright (11)... USD held BYU to 3-of-22 shooting beyond the arc. * USD rallied back from a 17-point 2nd half deficit to cut it to five with 2:13 to go but came up short in a home loss to Pacific... USD tied a Torero single game record with 15 made threes. * USD's second half rally came up just short in a hard-fought home loss to Saint Mary's (Feb. 3)... No. 13 SMC was paced by center Jock Landale (34 points, 18 rebounds). * The Toreros battled No. 14 Gonzaga tough in Spokane (Feb. 1) but came away with a loss... Olin Carter III scored a game-high 21 points (5-11 in threes) but the Toreros as a team struggled from the field (20-61,.328)... USD's defense held GU to 18 points below their average but allowed the Zags to score 24 points on second chance attempts and 38 points in the paint... He totaled new season-highs in points (29) and assists (9) against LMU... He converted 14-of-18 shots (.778) over the two games. * Behind 29 points and 9 assists from Isaiah Pineiro the Toreros earned an road win at LMU (Jan. 27)... Wright paced four Toreros in double digit scoring with a game-high 22 points to go with 7 assists and 5 steals in leading San Diego to an road win over San Jose State. Wright made 9-of-13 shots overall (69.2%) and was 2-2 from beyond the arc. * Carter was named to the Preseason All-WCC team... He ranks second among WCC returning scorers behind Jock Landale of Saint Mary's (16.9 ppg)... 4 JACK CRONIN BACK AS USD'S VOICE OF TORERO MEN'S BASKETBALL Jack Cronin will be the play-by-play voice for Toreros men's basketball this season with games airing on the Mighty 1090AM and ESPN 1700 AM. Cronin returns for his fourth year as Voice of Toreros Basketball. Cronin is in his 11th year as the play-by-play announcer for University of San Diego Football, and was the #2 voice for USD Men's Basketball for seven years prior to his appointment three seasons ago. In he began working for TheW. tv calling volleyball and soccer games. He is also in his 10th year calling football, basketball, baseball, softball, track & field, water polo and volleyball on television for Spectrum and the SPEC SportsNet. Cronin graduated in 2004 from the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in Integrative Biology. The Center of Excellence is a feeder program to all of Australia s Olympic Sports...
