SERIES RECORD: This is the 84th meeting between the USD Toreros and Santa Clara Broncos with SCU owning a advantage... The Toreros have won two straight, including the win at the JCP on January 25 (Isaiah Wright, 21 points; Juwan Gray, 14 points)... Last season at Santa Clara the Toreros came away with an double overtime win at Santa Clara on February 18, Tyler Williams (7 points) connected on a 17-footer for the game winner and Cameron Neubauer totaled 24 points & 10 rebounds. WCC STANDINGS (as of Feb. 9): Saint Mary's College (13-0 WCC, 24-2), Gonzaga (12-1, 22-4), BYU (8-5, 19-7), San Diego (7-6, 16-9), Pacific (7-6, 12-14), San Francisco (6-7, 14-12), Santa Clara (5-8, 8-17), Portland (4-9, 10-16), LMU (2-11, 7-17), Pepperdine (1-12, 4-21). WCC PRESEASON COACHES POLL: The Toreros were picked to place sixth in the Preseason WCC Coaches Poll. Saint Mary's is first with 81 points (9 first place votes). Rounding out the top-5 is Gonzaga (73 points, 1), BYU (62), USF (59) and Santa Clara (44). Following San Diego (37) is Pepperdine (30), Pacific (24), Portland (21) and LMU (19). HEAD COACH LAMONT SMITH (3RD YEAR): Coach Lamont Smith (San Diego, 1998) is in his third year at the helm of the Torero basketball program. This year's team was the first Torero team to reach eight wins in its first 10 contests, and had extended their best start to 12 wins in the first 15 games (since USD joined the NCAA Division I ranks in ). The Toreros enter the Pepperdine game with a 16-9 record, and the 16 wins is a new personal best for Smith. Prior to USD, Smith was at New Mexico where he was the Associate Head Coach. Prior to UNM he spent time at Washington, Arizona State, Santa Clara, Saint Mary's and Saint Louis. Smith was a member of the USD men's basketball team from He started all 27 games his senior year in for the 18-9 Toreros. He was named the Toreros' Defensive Player of the Year in 1997 and 1999 and served as the team captain from Smith earned a BA degree in Communications in Lamont and his wife Kimberly have two daughters -- Payton and Olivia. A LOOK AHEAD: USD returns to the Jenny Craig Pavilion for home games against Pacific (Thur. Feb. 15, 7:00 p.m.) and BYU (Sat., Feb. 17, 1:00 p.m.). TOREROS RALLY TO BEAT PEPPERDINE 68-66: On Thursday USD overcame a 10 point second half deficit with nine minutes to go to escape with a road win at Pepperdine... Wright paced four Toreros in double digit scoring with a game-high 22 points to go with 7 assists and 5 steals in leading San Diego to an road win over San Jose State. Wright made 9-of-13 shots overall (69.2%) and was 2-2 from beyond the arc. * Carter was named to the Preseason All-WCC team... He ranks second among WCC returning scorers behind Jock Landale of Saint Mary's (16.9 ppg)... A trio of junior guards have been selected by the coaching staff and teammates to be team captains: Olin Carter III (Allen, TX), Tyler Williams (Plano, TX) and Isaiah Wright (Boise, ID).

4 JACK CRONIN BACK AS USD'S VOICE OF TORERO MEN'S BASKETBALL Jack Cronin will be the play-by-play voice for Toreros men's basketball this season with games airing on the Mighty 1090AM and ESPN 1700 AM. Cronin returns for his fourth year as Voice of Toreros Basketball. Cronin is in his 11th year as the play-by-play announcer for University of San Diego Football, and was the #2 voice for USD Men's Basketball for seven years prior to his appointment three seasons ago. Jack Cronin You can follow him on twitter He spent nine years at The Mighty 1090 Sports Radio as a host, reporter and Executive Producer, and is now entering his third year at NewsRadio 600 KOGO as an anchor and reporter here in San Diego. In he began working for TheW. tv calling volleyball and soccer games. He is also in his 10th year calling football, basketball, baseball, softball, track & field, water polo and volleyball on television for Spectrum and the SPEC SportsNet. Cronin graduated in 2004 from the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in Integrative Biology.
