It will 1 also mark the Flames' first-ever contest in Massachusetts and their first matchup with any team from the Bay State in program history. Liberty Director of Athletics Ian McCaw previously spent one academic year ( ) as the AD at UMass and earned a master's degree from UMass in This game will feature two of five FBS wide receivers who tallied 1,000+ receiving yards and receiving TDs last season in Liberty junior Antonio Gandy-Golden and UMass senior Andy Isabella. Both are excelling in 2018, as Gandy-Golden posted a school-record 245 receiving yards at New Mexico (Sept. 29) and has hauled in seven receiving TDs. Isabella leads the nation in receiving yards (1,091) and is fifth in receptions per game (7.6). Saturday's game could be a shootout, as Liberty has been a part of three contests this season 3 where the two teams combined for 80+ points and UMass has been involved in four such games. The Minutemen only have three games remaining in the 2018 season, including Saturday, whereas Liberty has five games left to play. Saturday marks the first of Liberty's four scheduled visits to UMass between now and the season (also 2019, 2022 and 2024). Liberty will visit Amherst more often than any other campus over that time span. This is the third of Liberty's four games against fellow FBS independent teams this season, and the Flames are still in search of their first-ever win over an FBS independent. FIRST TIME FOES Saturday's contest will be the first-ever football game between Liberty and UMass. UMass is Liberty's sixth first-time opponent in the first eight games of the 2018 season, along with Army, North Texas, New Mexico, New Mexico State and Idaho State. CHECKING THEM OFF Liberty is playing its first-ever game in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. This will be the 27th different state the Flames have visited in program history and the second new state they have added to the list this season (also New Mexico). MAKINGS OF A NEW RIVALRY? Liberty and UMass have never met in football and do not have much of a competitive history in any sport. The Minutemen baseball team visited Lynchburg in both 1979 and 2001, with Liberty winning four of the five meetings. Liberty has also faced UMass twice in women's basketball, losing both matchups. Most recently, UMass topped the Lady Flames on a last-second three-pointer on Nov. 25, 2017 in Amherst. Liberty will quickly get familiar with its fellow FBS independent, as the Flames are scheduled to face UMass on the gridiron for eight straight seasons. The Flames will make additional trips to UMass in 2019, 2022 and 2024, with the Minutemen slated to visit Lynchburg in 2020, 2021, 2023 and Liberty Director of Athletics Ian McCaw is already well acquainted with UMass, after serving as the school's AD during the academic year. He also graduated from UMass with a master's degree in FACING FBS INDEPENDENTS Liberty is still in search of its first-ever victory over an FBS independent squad. The Flames are 0-6 all-time versus FBS independents, including road losses at Army and New Mexico State earlier this season. Liberty is also scheduled to host New Mexico State on Nov. 24. ON THE ROAD AGAIN Liberty has only played three road games thus far in 2018, defeating New Mexico and falling at Army and New Mexico State. The Flames will now embark upon a challenging threegame road trip, visiting UMass, Virginia and Auburn during the next three weeks. Liberty has only played three consecutive road games during the regular season once previously under Turner Gill. The Flames went 1-3 during a span of four straight road contests (Southern Illinois, Georgia State, Gardner-Webb and Monmouth), spanning Sept. 26-Oct. 17, CONNECTING THE DOTS There are a number of connections between the Liberty and UMass football teams. UMass assistant coach Darrius G. Smith was on the Villanova staff when the Wildcats eliminated the Flames from the 2014 FCS Playoffs, ending Liberty's lone FCS Playoffs appearance. Liberty CB Jeremy Peters and UMass RB Bilal Ally both graduated from Clay High School in Green Cove Springs, Fla. Both teams feature freshmen from The Bolles School in Jacksonville, Fla., including Liberty TE Mason Yost and UMass QB Josiah Johnson. Liberty has posted a 75.0 winning percentage at Williams Stadium under Gill (30-10 record) following the Oct. 20 win over Idaho State. Liberty is all-time in Homecoming football games after the Flames win over Idaho State on Oct. 20, including a 4-3 mark under head coach Turner Gill and a 9-3 record in its last 12 Homecoming games. Liberty s game at UMass will be the first of four games during the month of November for the Flames in Liberty has posted a 16-5 record during the month of November (76.2 winning percentage) during its first six seasons under head coach Turner Gill, marking the team s most successful month under Gill. The UMass game begins a three-game road swing for the Flames, tying Liberty s second-longest road stretch in seven seasons under head coach Turner Gill. During the 2015 season, Liberty played four consecutive road games, posting a 1-3 record during the run (L/ at Southern Illinois/Sept. 26; W/ at Georgia State/Oct. 3; L/ at Gardner-Webb/ Oct. 10; L/ at Monmouth/Oct. 17). For the fifth time this season, Liberty surpassed the 300- yard passing mark in game, finishing the Idaho State game with 362 passing yards on 32-of-48 passing attempts. The Flames are now averaging passing yards per game in The average would be tied for No. 9 in the country in passing yards if Liberty was eligible for the FBS statistical ranks (not eligible due to NCAA FBS reclassification process). 5 Liberty opened the Idaho State game with a 15-play, 78-yard drive that took 6:36 off the clock and ended on a six-yard rushing touchdown by RB Frankie Hickson. The drive marked Liberty s longest of the season in terms of number of plays and time of possession. Defense After limiting Troy to an opponent season-low 293 yards the week prior, Liberty allowed Idaho State to finish the contest with an opponent season-high 631 yards on 86 plays (7.3 yards per play). Idaho State s 631 total offensive yards marked the third time in seven seasons under head coach Turner Gill Liberty has allowed an opponent to total 600 or more total offensive yards (637 yards to Appalachian State in OT in 2014; 608 yards to Monmouth in 2017). Five out of Liberty s last six opponents have racked up 500 or more total offensive yards against Liberty (rush/pass): 510 by Army (449/61); 531 by North Texas (346/185); 580 by New Mexico (211/369); 567 by New Mexico State (165/402); 631 by Idaho State (234/397). Special Teams After missing the first six games of the season due to a lower body injury, two-time all-conference kicker Alex Probert returned the active lineup against Idaho State. The junior finished the game knocking down 6-of-7 extra point attempts. The 2018 AutoNation Cure Bowl will be played on Dec. 15, while the 2019 AutoNation Cure Bowl will be contested on Dec. 21. Gill has guided the Flames to four Big South titles during his first six seasons on Liberty Mountain ( and 2016). The successful five-year run was spotlighted when he led Liberty into uncharted waters in 2014, leading the program to its first-ever trip to the NCAA FCS Playoffs. Gill was also selected the top Division I coach in Virginia by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID), the second for any head football coach in program history.
