Liberty was one of four charter members in the Big South when the league started to sponsor football in 2002 (along with Charleston Southern, Elon and Gardner-Webb). During his previous five seasons at Liberty, Flames Head Coach Turner Gill has led the Flames to a Big South title four times (2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016) and its first-ever NCAA FCS Playoff appearance in 2014 (advancing to the second round). The Flames win after trailing by 17 points against Duquesne marked the team s biggest comeback win since Turner Gill s first victory at Liberty, Oct. 6, 2012 against Gardner-Webb at Williams Stadium. The Flames trailed 21-3 in the 2nd quarter and in the 3rd before rallying for a win. Liberty s win over Presbyterian last Saturday secured the team s 12th-consecutive winning season and the 25th in program history. Liberty is one of five FCS programs in the country to have posted a winning record 11 or more seasons in a row. Liberty finished its 2017 home schedule averaging 16,571 fans in six games (99,425 total home attendance). During its first year of the FBS transition process, the Flames will report an average home attendance number of 15,452, meeting the NCAA s FBS average home attendance requirement (Note: Not all tickets counted in Liberty s announced home attendance figures qualify for the NCAA s FBS average home attendance requirement). The Flames have rushed for 527 yards on 104 carries and five touchdowns during the last two games Liberty rushed for 499 yards on 139 carries for five touchdowns during its previous five games (Jacksonville State to Gardner-Webb). Liberty s offense continues to be powered by its passing 5 games as the Flames passing yards per game accounts for 68.0 percent of the team s total offense this season (Liberty would rank No. 8 in the country in passing offense, if the Flames were eligible for the NCAA FCS national rankings) Liberty continues to remain highly efficient in the red zone this season and would rank No. 22 in the country if it was eligible for the NCAA FCS national rankings (86.5 percent/32-of-37; 13 TDs [14 rushing; 7 passing]/11 FGs). Defense After allowing 862 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns during its first two Big South games of the year, the Flames have held its last two Big South foes to 432 yards and three touchdowns. Liberty had forced nine turnovers in its previous three games (Monmouth 2; Gardner-Webb 3; Duquesne 4), but the Flames finished the PC game without forcing a turnover for the second time in 2017 (also against St. Francis, Pa.). The Flames have limited their last two Big South opponents to 483 (Gardner-Webb) and 452 (Presbyterian) total offensive yards. Special Teams The Flames have blocked two field goals this season, a potential game-winning 23-yard field goal against Indiana State on the game s last play and a 31-yarder against Gardner-Webb in the fourth quarter. Liberty has blocked a potential game-winning or tying field goal on the game s final play in three of the last four seasons (2014 vs. No. 1 Coastal Carolina; 2016 vs. Gardner-Webb in overtime; 2017 vs. Indiana State). Monmouth s Pete Guerriero recorded a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, marking the first time the Flames have allowed a kickoff return for a touchdown since Oct. 9, Liberty attempted a school-record six field goals against Duquesne, with Alex Probert connecting on 2-of-6 attempts. The sophomore entered the game having only missed five career field goal attempts (23-of-28).

6 Liberty 48, Baylor 45 (sept. 2, 2017) WHAT HAPPENED The beginning of Liberty's two-year FBS transition process started off with an offensive shootout. At the end it was the Flames standing as the victor, 48-45, over Baylor, Sept. 2, at McLane Stadium. On Feb. 16, the NCAA approved Liberty's waiver request to begin the twoyear FBS reclassification process. The Baylor game marked Liberty's final matchup against an FBS team as a FCS program. The Flames recorded their fifth win over an FBS program in school history with their victory. Three of the Flames' five wins over FBS programs have come under the leadership of sixth-year head coach Turner Gill. The Flames also defeated Appalachian State in 2014 and Georgia State in Liberty's first win over a FBS program came against Eastern Michigan in 1989, followed by a win over Ball State in With the win, the Flames move their record to 1-0 on the season, while Baylor opens the season at 0-1 under first-year head coach Matt Rhule. The game saw the two teams combined for 1,117 total offensive yards (Liberty 585; Baylor 532), with 725 of those yards coming through the air. HOW IT HAPPENED Liberty's offense controlled the game, as the Flames ran 103 plays for 585 total yards. The Flames went 15-of-24 on third down, giving Liberty more than 16 minutes of advantage in time of possession (38:16-21:44). Liberty committed zero turnovers, while coming up with two big interceptions. Chris Turner returned a pick 32 yards for a third-quarter TD, and Brandon Tillmon collected his first career INT on the game's final play. The Flames' defense also held Baylor to 41 yards and zero points during the first quarter, helping post Liberty to an early lead. In a game which featured three ties and four lead changes, Liberty took the lead for good at on a 13-yard pass from Stephen Calvert to Antonio Gandy-Golden with 24 seconds remaining in the third quarter. HISTORY MAKERS The win marked the first-ever victory over a Power Five opponent in Liberty and Big South Conference football history. Liberty entered the game as a 34-point underdog and with only a 2.2 percent chance to win according to ESPN's Football Power Index (FPI). The game was ranked the 7th-biggest upset in college football over the last 25 years, in a Sept. 6 article on ESPN.com. The Flames joined Lamar (1981) as the only FCS teams ever to defeat Baylor. In their final season as FCS members, the Flames recorded their first season-opening victory away from Lynchburg since 1988, their inaugural season as an FCS (then 1-AA) program. WHAT THEY SAID Liberty Head Coach Turner Gill "I think Liberty's brand name just went out pretty strong across the country. Again, not just for football, but really for the whole school.... Now people are going to know about Liberty University." Baylor Head Coach Matt Rhule "Just an unbelievable offensive performance and Gandy-Golden, 13 catches for 192 yards, pretty much all of them with someone draped on him. I thought he took over the game and Mosley, the tailback, with 122 yards really when it mattered. And Stephen Calvert, he did a tremendous job at the quarterback position for them." 6 BUCKSHOT'S BIG NIGHT Making just his eighth career start, sophomore QB Stephen "Buckshot" Calvert rewrote the record books in Waco. Calvert's 447 passing yards broke the program record of 441, set in 1984 by Phil Basso against Carson-Newman. Calvert also set program records for attempts (60) and completions (44), while throwing three TD passes and zero interceptions and recording his first career rushing TD. NOTEWORTHY Alex Probert tied a Liberty single-game record with four field goals, equaling the mark most recently set by Matt Bevins on Nov. 20, He was 4-of-4 on the night and scored a total of 16 points. Antonio Gandy-Golden set career highs for receptions (13), receiving yards (192) and touchdowns (2). His 192 receiving yards rank No. 5 in program history and were the most by a Flame since Chris Summers' program-record 240 yards against Stony Brook on Nov. 19, Gandy-Golden and Damian King (10 receptions) are the first Liberty duo to record 10+ catches in a single game since Josh Stofle and Daniel Jackson at South Florida on Oct. 27, Carrington Mosley carried the ball a career-high 28 times for 122 yards. Liberty had a 300-yard passer (Calvert), a 100-yard rusher (Mosley) and a 100-yard receiver (Gandy-Golden) in the same game for the first time since Oct. 11, 2014 at Appalachian State, when Josh Woodrum (passing), D.J. Abnar (rushing) and Dante' Shells (receiving) achieved the feat. Liberty's 103 offensive plays were the most the Flames have run in a single game since totaling 104 plays at South Florida on Oct. 27, Jeremy Peters paced the defensive effort with a career-high seven tackles and two pass breakups. Winstead (second team) and Probert (third team) were also named to the STATS FCS Preseason All-America Team. HUMAN HIGHLIGHT REEL Chris Turner Trey Turner Flames redshirt junior cornerback Chris Turner posted the No. 2 play on SportsCenter's Top 10 Plays on Aug. 12, thanks to a one-handed interception during a scrimmage. The play marked Turner's second career Top 10 appearance. He also made the cut on Nov. 19, 2015, following an acrobatic interception which helped seal a win over No. 4/4 Coastal Carolina. Turner is the Flames' active leader with eight career interceptions, including a pick-six at Baylor. Farrow has been the primary beneficiaries of Stephen Calvert's passing exploits. King has recorded double-digit catches twice this season. The Florida native's 60 receptions in 2017 are more than double his total from his first two seasons (24). Gandy-Golden racked up 192 receiving yards at Baylor, ranking No. 5 for a single game in program history. He then backed up that performance with a 171-yard outburst two weeks later against Indiana State. Ten of Farrow's 31 receptions this season have gone for touchdowns, including a program record-tying three scores against Morehead State. QUARTERBACKS, BEWARE! A charter member of the Big South Conference for football in 2002, Liberty has gone (.714) all-time in Big South games. The Flames lead all conference teams with eight Big South Conference titles (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016).
