However, the Flames have played 16 previous games against current American members, prior to the formation of the conference. Liberty is 0-1 alltime against Connecticut, 3-8 versus UCF and 0-4 against USF. 2 - SMU, under second-year head coach Chad Morris, is already halfway to its win total from 2015, when the Mustangs went SMU opened its 2016 campaign with a win at North Texas before losing a decision to nationally-ranked Baylor. The Mustangs golden era came in the early 1980s, when Pony Express running backs Eric Dickerson and Craig James led SMU to a record in 1981 and SMU is the last of three straight first-time opponents Liberty is facing to start the 2016 season, following Virginia Tech and Jacksonville. Saturday s game will be the Flames third all-time matchup with a Texas opponent, with both previous meetings coming against Texas State. 4 - SMU will not leave the state of Texas for the first four weeks of the season, including road trips to North Texas and Baylor and home matchups with the Flames and TCU. Conversely, Liberty is making its first trip west of the Mississippi in four years, since a 2012 visit to Montana. Last Meeting with an Opponent from Texas Sept. 18, 1993 Liberty 17, Texas State 14 San Marcos, Texas (Bobcat Stadium) Liberty s only previous game played in Texas saw the Flames improve to 3-0 to start the 1993 season. Doug Whitehead s 43-yard field goal with 5:54 remaining in the fourth quarter lifted Liberty to a victory over Texas State (then known as Southwest Texas State). Liberty s two touchdowns both came in the first half, including a 57-yard pass from Travis Wilemon to James McKnight and a 6-yard carry by Adrian Cherry. For the game, Wilemon was 15-of-25 passing for 201 yards and a TD. Cherry paced the Flames ground attack with 20 carries for 85 yards and a score. Liberty forced five turnovers by Texas State. However, the Flames committed four turnovers of their own. Today s Matchup 3 Mustang Connections Liberty Head Coach Turner Gill served as an assistant coach at SMU under Tom Rossley during the 1991 season. Liberty NG DeCarlo Hamilton and SMU DB Darrion Millines both went to American Heritage High School in Plantation, Fla. Liberty S Solomon McGinty and SMU DB Rashaad Burton were teammates at Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas in Three members of Liberty s coaching staff originally hail from Texas, including: head coach Turner Gill (Fort Worth), co-defensive coordinator Vantz Singletary (Houston) and assistant coach - linebackers Josh Bookbinder (San Antonio). Nine Flames will return to their home state on Saturday, including Tolen Avery (Galveston), Will Brown (Texarkana), Dontae Duff (Mesquite), Ja- Ron Greene (Beaumont), Tyrin Holloway (Humble), Cam Jackson (Houston), Julio Lozano (Bellaire), Lionell McConnell (Allen) and Solomon McGinty (Navasota). SMU defensive line coach Buddy Wyatt served in that same capacity at Kansas during Turner Gill s two seasons ( ) as the Jayhawks head coach. Liberty assistant Scott Downing was assistant head coach at Tulsa from , working on the same staff as current SMU assistants Jess Loepp, Van Malone and Archie McDaniel. Competing Against the Lone Star State Liberty is 2-0 all-time versus opponents from Texas, with both victories coming against Texas State (then known as Southwest Texas State). The Flames recorded a home victory over Texas State on Sept. 15, Three years later, Liberty traveled to San Marcos, Texas and posted a triumph against the Bobcats. West of the Mississippi Saturday s game will be Liberty s eighth contest played west of the Mississippi River in program history.
