Carter s inaugural contest as Delaware State s head coach. Most recently, he served as an assistant coach at Youngstown State in Carter also owns experience as an assistant at Florida, Louisville and Penn State. Like Liberty, the Hornets have made one appearance in the NCAA FCS Playoffs, thanks to their 2007 MEAC title. 2 - Liberty s Miles Hunter and Dante Shells both hail from Camden, Del., approximately five miles south of Delaware State s campus in Dover. Meanwhile, seven Hornets are Virginia natives. Among them, punter Jeremiah McGeough grew up the closest to Liberty. He graduated from George Washington High School in Danville, about an hour south of Lynchburg. 3 - Delaware State is seeking its first non-conference victory in three years. The Hornets last win outside MEAC play was a home triumph over VMI on Sept. 1, Delaware State is also aiming for its third win at Williams Stadium, as the Hornets are 2-3 all-time at the facility. 4 - Saturday will mark the 15th meeting between Liberty and Delaware State, making the Hornets the fourth most common opponent in Flames history. Liberty has only played Charleston Southern (22 meetings), Gardner-Webb (21) and James Madison (18) more often. Last Meeting with Delaware State Sept. 22, 2001 Liberty 34, Delaware State 7 Lynchburg, Va. (Williams Stadium) Liberty s most recent matchup with Delaware State contained a number of firsts. It marked the Flames first home game of the 2001 season, Liberty s first win of the year and both teams first game after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington, D.C. Liberty scored the game s first 27 points before the Hornets Dashane Dennis got his team on the board. He notched a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown during the third quarter. The Flames offensive leaders included Biff Parson (139 passing yards, 2 rushing TDs) and Dre Barnes (15 carries, 164 yards, 1 TD). Liberty s defense limited Delaware State s trio of quarterbacks to 27 yards on 4-23 passing. The Flames intercepted four Hornet passes and forced six turnovers overall.
